Solanco Unveils School Reopening Plan By Dayna M. Reidenouer
When the 2020-21 school year starts on Monday, Aug. 31, the Solanco School District plans to offer inperson instruction for all students, district superintendent Brian Bliss said during the school board meeting on July 6. “Doing so will be a challenge, but it is a challenge we are preparing to meet,” Bliss said, adding that 22 task forces are working on plans. Bliss stressed that the situation is continuing to evolve, so the current plan is subject to change. He called on community members, students, parents, and district employees to have empathy for everyone involved. “Our efforts must be grounded in genuine care for each other,” Bliss said. Bliss also encouraged modeling optimism and resilience for students. “(They) listen to our words, they watch our body language, and I am sure they are nervous and uncertain,” Bliss said. “Now is the time to help them work through this.” The reopening plans were created with the input of the task forces as well as feedback from parent engagement groups and parent survey respondents
and were built on the recommendations of local health professionals and governmental guidance. Bliss cited the American Academy of Pediatrics as suggesting that students might be harmed if schools do not reopen, including the interruption of support services, social isolation, reduced ability to address learning deficits, reduced emotional health services, and increased food insecurity. However, those negative effects must be balanced against the fact that individuals throughout the district are immunocompromised. “We must protect our most vulnerable,” Bliss asserted. To do that, the district has been building a flexible instructional model that will offer options for in-person, partially remote, or entirely remote learning. “Our goal is that, if the situation changes, our instructional model for students will continue uninterrupted,” Bliss explained. “We want all of our students present, but if some students have extended absences, we want them to continue on the same pace with their peers. If we have to change schedules throughout the year, we want instruction to seamlessly shift to a more remote setup.” See Solanco School District pg 2
UDS Service Dogs Program Sets First Golf Outing 402 Golf Road, Lancaster. Program manager Lori Breece hopes it will become an annual event. UDS Service Dogs will host its first golf outing “We have been trying to find a signature event on Friday, Aug. 28, at Meadia Heights Golf Club, that can bring in strong revenue for our program and get the community engaged,” Breece remarked. Landis Communities offered pointers in planning the event. Volunteers met with representatives of golf courses around Lancaster County to see who would want to partner with UDS Service Dogs, and Meadia Heights was the most eager. The Aug. 28 date was scheduled in August 2019. Breece said that when the shutdown occurred, she was afraid that the outing might UDS Service Dogs (from left) Gibson, Henry, and Kirby were have to be postponed or canmatched with clients in June and have begun team training in prepa- celed, but final planning for the ration for providing assistance to people with physical or intellectual event is going strong. disabilities. Supporting Solid Rock By Dayna M. Reidenouer
Community support is crucial to the ongoing operation of Solid Rock Youth Ministries, 34 E. State St., Quarryville, which offers free
programs for youths in kindergarten through ninth grade who live in southern Lancaster County. A member of Boy Scout Troop 91 recently built a welcome desk for Solid Rock, and a Farm-toTable Dinner Drive-Through Experience will be held on Friday, Aug. 7. Scout Andrew Craig, who will be a senior at Solanco High School this fall and then plans to study mechanical engineering in college, took on the construction of the desk as his Eagle Scout project. “I wanted to help an organization that doesn’t have access to as many resources as others I have more connections with,” Andrew said. “I also wanted a project that involved designing and building things, which I enjoy, and would be a challenge for me. I am super excited with how it turned out.” The desk will be used to check visitors in and See Solid Rock pg 3 Boy Scout Troop 91 member Andrew Craig recently built a welcome desk for Solid Rock Youth Ministries for his Eagle Scout project.
