ark Mueller and his wife, Jackie, took a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS) and turned it into an opportunity to help others. Jackie was diagnosed with MS in 1998, and the couple sought to treat the disease as naturally as possible, without medication. They experimented with nutrition and exercise to see what worked and what didn’t, and their research led to MS FitEffect, a free, 10-week program for people with MS. Sports can play a key role in a young person’s development. A nontraditional sport, archery is given an avenue through the Junior Olympic Archery Development (JOAD) program, which provides participation and competition opportunities for students. Perhaps the most important thing that JOAD does is bring out the best in kids. “I want (students) to learn about archery, their archery,” said Bryan Baker, an assistant manager at the Lancaster Archery Academy. “Their archery
On a stretch of preser ved farmland in Elizabethtown, transformation happens every day at a space that offers reconnection - with the land, with one another and with the essential act of growing food. This is Wittel Farm, a nonprofit on 85 acres of land with a long history of care, now being reimagined as a place where food, community and environmental stewardship meet. Records date the property to the mid-1700s, and long before that it was cared for by the Susquehannock people. In the 1980s, Chuck and Katie Wittel placed the property into a land trust, gifting it to the Lutheran Camping Corporation. While not much was produced at the farm for many years, that changed in 2016, when the farm’s current manager, the Rev. Matt Lenahan, began the Growing Project, a partnership between the Lutheran Camping Corp., the Lower Susquehanna Synod and Hunger-Free Lancaster County. L enahan, pastor of Zion Lutheran Church in Akron, grew up on a large commercial farm in New York and once thought he would never farm again after entering ministry. His thinking shifted as he became more aware of food insecurity and the fragility of modern food systems. “I really star ted to think about the food system and how food-dependent we are because so few of us are actually participating in the food production,” he said. “We’ve really stepped

Wittel Farm from pg 1 away as a culture from agriculture as a principal way people live, and I think that’s problematic.” Knowing that access to fresh, locally grown food was a challenge in the county, Lenahan asked a question: “What if we grow food together and give it away?” From that idea, a community-based effort to produce food for Lancaster County’s charitable food system began to grow. Wittel Farm partners with the Lancaster County Food Hub, the Elizabethtown Community Cupboard, Power Packs, Water Street Mission and other organizations to distribute its harvest. This summer, the farm will partner with Columbia Dream Center for the first time, providing produce for its summer food program. In its first year, the farm produced a few thousand pounds of food. Now, it is in its 10th growing season, farming about nine acres intensively and growing more than 20 varieties of fruits and vegetables, including plums, berries, pawpaws, greens, cucumbers, pumpkins, beans, peppers and potatoes. Along the way, Lenahan embraced regenerative agriculture, a chemical-free approach that focuses on soil health, biodiversity and ecological balance. Cover crops, composting and minimal soil disturbance replace synthetic
fertilizers and pesticides. “We work year-round at this site,” Lenahan said. “And we are constantly learning.” That learning happens not only for Lenahan, but for the hundreds of volunteers who come to the farm each year. Between 300 and 500 people help plant, weed and harvest throughout the growing season. Alex Chism, a Millersville University senior studying education and plant science, joined the farm as an intern in 2024 and quickly became an essential part of its work. “I really enjoy the physical nature of the work,” Chism said. “It’s very methodical. There are so many things grabbing for our attention, and to be able to just focus on one thing that is very fruitful is amazing.” This past year, Chism expanded the farm’s crop diversity by adding flowers alongside food. The flowers have increased pollinators such as bees and butterflies, boosting fruit and vegetable production. Ceinwyn Erb, an Elizabethtown College junior studying environmental science, began volunteering at Wittel Farm in September. “It’s been wonderful to have every week a set time to be outside, be in nature, working with my hands, doing something that is positively impacting the local community and the local environment,” Erb said.

Lenahan describes Wittel Farm as “community-sustained agriculture,” a model that invites people into the work of food production rather than simply consuming its results. “We like to talk about food sovereignty, acknowledging that every one of us eats, so we all have a stake in food production,” he said. “It’s about really helping people to reclaim an intrinsic human connection to the natural world and to growing food.” He is careful to note that Wittel Farm is not about “agritainment.” “I really want this to be a place where the community can get involved and have a real experience,” he said. “I think there is actually joy in doing this work together. … I really love bringing people together on the farm who have no experience with farming at all, no
experience with food production, and they get to have an experience here, whether planting something, tending or harvesting. It’s transformational for people.” This year, the farm plans to add chickens, expand partnerships and hire more staff, including a farm educator role Chism will fill after graduation. Though the land is held by the Lutheran Camping Corp. and protected by Lancaster Farmland Trust, Lenahan sees Wittel Farm as belonging to the whole community. “This is a place for everyone,” he said. “Young children, seniors, people with no experience at all. I want them to figure out what their identity is, especially if they’re doing this at a very high level. I don’t want their identity to be defined by their success. The program is designed to teach young people the sport, get them involved with it and develop national and world-level competitors, depending upon each individual’s level of interest. There are fees associated with participation in the JOAD program. “It depends on the archer, and it depends on their goals,” said Baker. “For some, it’s a reason to get out of bed in the morning. You need to be able to have flexibility in your program to cater to both types of people.” Lancaster Archery Academy is home to three separate indoor shooting ranges for training, instruction and practice. The facility’s main range features 12 targets set downrange at an international standard distance of 18 meters, 23 target lanes, a waiting area and spectator space. The academy’s JOAD program is actually two programs rolled into one. Shooters who attend the program that meets at Lancaster Archery Academy on Thursdays are generally less experienced or more casual, while the Saturday sessions tend to be more intense and designed for archers who are more experienced. “It’s like any skill you want to improve,” said Baker. “(Students) are going to fail a lot, and that’s a good thing. You make mistakes, and you’re going to want to enjoy the process of archery. It doesn’t come right away, and it comes with
practice. The more you practice, the more proficient you’ll get at it.” “The approach I’d like to see archers take is, ‘Let’s see how good I can get at it. I don’t know, but I’m going to find out,’” added Baker. “That’s the question everyone should be asking at the beginning and at the end.” Currently, there are about 70 archers between the ages of 8 and 20 enrolled in the JOAD program at Lancaster Archery Academy. The students reside in Lancaster County, southeastern Pennsylvania, other areas across the state, New York, New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland. “These archers are people you walk past at supermarkets,” said Baker. “They’re the kids who play with your kids. They’re people. They’re your neighbors. They’re your friends. They’re you. You can enter it at any age and excel in it. Anbody can do this and enjoy this really cool experience.” There are 10 instructors who work at the Lancaster Archery Academy, and many of those teachers instruc t students
enrolled in the JOAD program. “Patience is important,” said Baker. “Teaching archery is no different than teaching anything else. You have to understand the person you are teaching. You have to have conversations to learn on a deeper level. You teach basic aspects at the beginning. A lot of people understand how to do a large breadth of tasks, and all of those require motor skills and a mental frame.” Many of the more serious JOAD archers compete in local, regional, national and international tournaments, as many as 24 tournaments in a year. “The Junior Olympic Archery D evelopment program was created by USA Archery in order to have a talented pool of competitors to pull from for major international events,” said Baker. “It’s been a vastly successful program. Lititz Band from pg 1 community band plays at the Fourth of July celebration at Lititz Springs Park, A Taste of Lititz, Venture Lititz’s Farmers Market, other special events, retirement homes and the Lititz Public Library. The musicians of the Lititz Community Band are volunteers, and most of their performances are free to attend. “I think it’s a passion,” said Samly. “You take years of lessons growing up, and you want to keep those skills. We get so caught up in our everyday lives; it’s hectic and stressed. But this is an outlet. I think people look for that outlet. People have to love it to do it, or they wouldn’t do it. They’re people who thoroughly enjoy what they do. There’s no feeling like it.” About 65 serious musicians make up the Lititz Community Band, residents of Lititz, Manheim Township, Manheim, Hempfield, Ephrata and Lampeter. Those musicians are masters of flutes, saxophones, trumpets, tubas, baritones, trombones, French horns, snare drums, timpani and clarinets. “These are people who have a commonality,” said Samly. “It’s a diversity of musicians who have a love of music. They have an enduring passion. Our rehearsals are like two-hour workouts. We see each other frequently, and we enjoy each other’s company.” “They’re very talented,” he con-

community and serving it. “We support the community,” said Samly. “Everybody likes some kind of music, and we try to play a wide variety of music. It’s a catharsis for the community. People relate to our kind of music, and we suppor t community events. We’re the community’s band, and we’re proud of it.” In season, the Lititz Community Band rehearses at its home base, Lititz Moravian Church, 8 Church Square, Lititz. From the middle of April to late May, the band practices once a week in preparation for its season, which begins with an appearance in the Lititz Memorial Day parade and ends in the beginning of September. “It’s a seasonal band. It’s a summer band,” said Samly, a clarinet-playing resident of Manheim Township. “We’re happy to go anywhere in the community, and we’re always looking for good venues to play. We do have a band that is willing to be part of the community. People come out and enjoy the band. There’s something for the participants, and there’s something for the community. It’s a family activity. We have musicians who are family or families who are playing together.” Typically, the Lititz Community Band presents about 10 onehour concerts every season. The

NSI Sets Welcome to the Battle North Star Initiative (NSI), a nonprofit that works in both Berks and Lancaster counties and provides housing and restoration programming for trafficking survivors, will hold Welcome to the Battle on Thursday, Jan. 29, from 6 to 8 p.m. at LCBC Ephrata, 5 Hahnstown Road. For the first time, the annual event will feature a panel led entirely by professionals with lived experience. These survivor leaders will equip audience members with current facts about human trafficking and insights into how to protect the community from exploitation. The event will also include light refreshments; access to multiple local anti-trafficking organizations; and the opportunity to shop at Florissant Collective, NSI’s social
enterprise that empowers survivors to pursue their dreams. The event is free, but attendees are asked to register at www .northstarinitiative.org/events. Attendees have the option to purchase a ticket and receive complimentary apparel and merchandise. January is recognized by the Department of Health and Human Services as National Human Trafficking Prevention Month. Throughout the month, NSI is sponsoring a series of ads and talks to educate the community to recognize warning signs and prevent exploitation. Giant Sponsors Feeding School Kids Initiative The Giant Company, known locally as Giant and Martin’s, has announced the return of its annual Feeding School Kids initiative. Marking its sixth year, customers at Giant, Martin’s and Giant Heirloom Market stores are invited to round up their purchases to the nearest dollar or convert their CHOICE points into a donation for their local public school districts’ food programs now through Tuesday, March 31. To launch the program, the Giant Company will donate $100,000. Through Feeding School Kids, public school districts have been able to support meal programs and address food insecurity from supplying backpacks with week-
end food to clearing outstanding student lunch debt to building on-campus food pantries and establishing garden programs. In 2025, for example, the Frederick County School District in Maryland put funds toward food costs for its Bright Futures weekend food pack program that feeds 1,500 kids each week; the State College School District directed funding to cover student lunch debt and to rent a mobile refrigeration unit for its Summer Lunch program, serving nearly 7,000 meals; and the York Suburban School District used funds to cover food expenses for its Impact Pantry for one year, serving 70 families twice a month.
