Stars Always Align at North Museum Planetarium

Movie actors Tom Cruise, Meryl Streep and Denzel Washington are Hollywood box office heavyweights. But if you want to view real stars on a really big screen, head to the North Museum’s planetarium.

“It’s really nice to see when people get really excited for it,” said Cole Penkunas, who’s been the North Museum’s resident astronomer for two years. “It gets me really excited when people ask questions. It shows me they’re interested in science and astronomy. They’re excited about something I’m excited about.”

Simply put, the planetarium is one of the most popular attractions at a place - the North Museum of Nature and Science, located at 400 College Ave., Lancaster - that has so many interesting exhibits to experience. Admission to the planetarium, which offers shows mainly on Saturdays and Sundays at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., is included with admission to the North Museum.

“For me, there’s definitely a coolness factor to it,” said Penkunas. “I think some of it is because we want to know where we exist in the universe. Astronomy can tell us a lot about physics, about the Earth and the nature of reality on

a really big scale. I think astronomy just being the study of the stars is just very appealing to a lot of people. A lot of people want to explore the world. Earth has been well charted, and now people are looking up for new stuff.”

The unidirectional planetarium at the North Museum is physically made up of 70 seats and a 40-foot-diameter dome. A projection system uses special lenses to portray images of stars, galaxies, moons, constellations and other celestial bodies on the auditorium’s ceiling.

“It’s more of a traditional movie-style planetarium where everyone faces the same way,” said Penkunas, a resident of Lititz. “The main thing with the planetarium is to get more space

education out there. The goal is to educate about space and stars in fun and immersive ways.”

Based on a rotating schedule, the planetarium offers about 15 to 20 different shows for adults and kids throughout the year, including “Night Sky Tours” and other seasonal presentations. That’s a total of more than 240 of the 30- to 40-minute presentations annually.

The planetarium also periodically offers shows on dinosaurs and super volcanoes, as well as select documentaries.

“I think we have a really good understanding of our solar system as it exists now,” said Penkunas. “We have a good understanding of the sun. But there are still a lot of questions. We have a really good

Don’t

Snooze on a Good Night’s Sleep

The importance of sleep to a human’s overall health and well-being can’t be overstated. Both a societal problem and an individual problem - both a cause and an effect - sleep disorders are fairly common. But the good news is that at its most basic level, quality of sleep can be improved through relatively minor adjustments and common-sense measures.

“We have absolutely made progress in this area,” said Masood Ahmad, a physician who is certified in sleep medicine and pulmonary disease by the American Board of Internal Medicine. “We understand sleep apnea better. We’re diagnosing more cases, and we’re managing them better. Now people understand it better. Everyone knows sleep is important.”

Ahmad practices sleep medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Sleep Lab at 1575 Highlands Drive, Lititz. The sleep lab evaluates, assesses, diagnoses and provides personalized treatments for individuals experiencing a wide range of sleep disorders, including sleep apnea, narcolepsy, sleepwalking, sleeptalking, insomnia and restless legs syndrome.

“We send patients to the sleep lab to diagnosis their sleep disorders,” said Ahmad. “We have to do the sleep studies to see how they sleep. Most of the times it’s nighttime studies for sleep apnea, but sometimes we do studies to see how sleepy they are during the day. We want to See Sleep Lab pg 4

The Giant Company, known locally as Giant and Martin’s, has announced the return of its annual Feeding School Kids initiative.

Marking its sixth year, customers at Giant, Martin’s and Giant Heirloom Market stores are invited to round up their purchases to the nearest dollar or convert their CHOICE points into a donation for their local public school districts’ food programs now through Tuesday, March 31. its Bright Futures weekend food pack program that feeds 1,500 kids each week; the State College School District directed funding to cover student lunch debt and to rent a mobile refrigeration unit for its Summer Lunch program, serving nearly 7,000 meals; and the York Suburban School District used funds to cover food expenses for its Impact Pantry for one year, serving 70 families twice a month.

idea of how planets formed, but we don’t know a lot of the specifics. We know a lot more than we ever did before, but a lot of the exact mechanisms of astronomy are still very much being researched. Overall, there’s still a lot to learn.”

The North Museum’s planetarium receives more than 2,500 visits each year. Some come from curious out-of-town tourists, but mainly they are from Lancaster County adults and students who want to learn about other worlds,

as well as the world around them.

“A lot of times it’s people who have never been to a planetarium before,” said Penkunas. “They hear there’s a planetarium, and they get excited. A lot of people come here just for the planetarium. Planetariums aren’t super common, and they aren’t easy to find.”

“I always want people to think astronomy is cool and accessible,” continued Penkunas. “Space is far away, but we’re not far away. I

think it’s important for people to have an interest in astronomy.”

The planetarium, which was built in the 1960s and renovated in 2012, is located on the main floor of the three-floor structure that houses the North Museum of Nature and Science. The planetarium is surrounded by 12 main sections, each featuring its own themed exhibits, displays and collections.

“I’d say that the planetarium is a companion to the rest of the museum,”

Moten to Speak at Gathering

On Friday, Jan. 23, an indoor, multidenominational prayer gathering will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2151 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, featuring speaker Adrienne Moten. She was on the verge of ending her own life just one month before she was arrested for her complicity in crimes committed in Gosnell’s facility, and she spent two years in prison.

Moten is featured in the short film documentary “She Was Stronger” and has earned a degree in biblical studies. She shares her story of redemption in a safe, non-graphic way and ministers with music. The program is free, with no registration needed. For more information, visit https:// westpca.com/events/ indoor-march-for -life-gathering/.

KICK-OFF:

You are invited to attend our non-denominational Bible study Thursdays January 22- April 30.

Sleep Lab from

see how many times they stop breathing, how they maintain brain activities, how quickly they fall asleep and how quickly they get to REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. We look for body movements. We have to see what state the apnea is in. We coordinate all of those things, and then from the correlation we make a diagnosis.”

With assistance from sleep technicians, typically nighttime studies are performed from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. at the UPMC Sleep Lab. Ahmad refers patients to the sleep lab, examines the results of the studies and also helps treat patients who have been referred by other physicians.

“If someone comes to me and tells me, ‘I can’t sleep,’ I have to pinpoint the problem,” said Ahmad. “I’ll ask them, ‘What’s your history? What’s your specific problem? When you sleep, what happens?’ Some patients have multiple problems.”

“Some people can’t

sleep because of behavior problems, like TV and cellphones,” continued Ahmad. “I’ll recommend managing stress better and not watching blue light one hour before bedtime. I’ll tell them to exercise regularly, no caffeine before bed, no snacks before bed and try not to nap during the daytime. These are common recommendations.”

Ahmad recommends at least seven hours of sleep a night for adults and as much as 10 hours a night for children.

“It should be quality sleep, deep sleep when you get to all of the sleep stages,” said Ahmad. “There are all different levels of sleep apnea, and for most sleep apneas, they should be treated by a CPAP (a machine that delivers a constant flow of pressurized air during sleep). If it’s something simple and there is no excessive daytime sleeping, we tell patients to simply lose weight. If you lose 10% of your body weight, you

Lab.

may lose 50% of your sleep apnea. If you lose 20% of your body weight, then there’s a good chance you may not have it.”

According to Ahmad, up to 20% of the national population has experienced sleep disorders. Sleep disorders are more common in men, people who have allergies or sinus issues and people with obesity, and there are genetic factors involved with their frequency.

“I think it’s still underdiagnosed,” said Ahmad. “(Sleep disorders are a) risk factor for cancer. Sleep apnea is a risk factor for

stroke. Sleep apnea is a risk factor for dementia and other diseases. It affects your immunity. It can produce hypertension, which leads to heart disease.”

Because he practices what he preaches, Ahmad is his No. 1 patient.

“Nine p.m. is bedtime, and 5 in the morning is when I get up,” said Ahmad. “I wake up at 5 every single day, even on weekends. If you keep regular hours, you’ll get better sleep. I’m a good sleeper. I sleep well.”
