Exploremores Join Girl Scout Cookie Lineup

Those who love rocky road ice cream will be pleased to know that it was the inspiration for the new Girl Scout Cookie for the 2026 season, called Exploremores. According to the Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania (GSEP), Exploremores are chocolate sandwich cookies filled with a creamy blend of marshmallow and toasted almond-flavored crème. The new variety replaces S’mores and Toast-Yay!

So far, the new cookies have gotten some positive reviews. “I think it’s good. It is kind of like an ice cream sandwich,” said Peyton King, a member of Christiana Girl Scout Troop 4673, who was selling cookies recently at the Parkesburg Walmart along with her mother, Amanda.

In addition to Walmart, located at 100 Commons Drive in Parkesburg, cookies are on sale on weekends at Tractor Supply, 985 Octorara Trail, Parkesburg. For a complete list of booth locations, visit www .gsep.org, choose “Cookies” and then enter a ZIP code at “Find Cookies!”

Parkesburg 250 Sets Upcoming Fundraisers

Parkesburg 250, a newly formed organization that will present a three-day celebration in Parkesburg to commemorate America’s 250th birthday this summer, has planned several upcoming fundraisers. Proceeds from the events will be used by the group to help with the three-day event, set for Friday, July 3, through Sunday, July 5, in Parkesburg’s Minch Park.

The group’s first scheduled fundraisers are bingo games and pancake breakfasts. Bingo will be held on Fridays, Feb. 13 and March 13, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Parkesburg VFW, 406 W. Fourth Ave. There will also be food offered for sale, prizes and an opportunity to win gift baskets. To reserve a spot at an upcoming bingo, email parkesburg250@ gmail.com. Tickets will also be sold at the door.

“At every bingo, we have been running 12 bingo games with prizes. Plus, we are doing five baskets at every bingo,” said Casey Wyatt, a member of the Parkesburg 250 committee. “There is a potential of 17 things they can win at every bingo.” Those who would like to donate items for the prize baskets are asked to contact the group via the aforementioned email. Pancake breakfasts will be held on Saturdays, Feb. 21 and March 21, from 8 to 10 a.m. at the VFW. A fee will be charged per person. The breakfast will include all-you-can-eat pancakes, fruit, bacon or sausage, coffee and tea. Parkesburg 250, which has been meeting since the fall of 2025,

hour prior to the event. To register, go to www.rails andales.org.

“We certainly encourage people to buy early, especially VIP (tickets),” said program coordinator Elizabeth Myers. “We usually sell that out well in advance of the event.”

Bespoke Brewing, BierHall Brewing, GearHouse Brewing Co., Seven Sirens Brewing Company, and Tröegs Independent Brewing will take part in Rails & Ales.

“Participating breweries will continue to be added to the event website throughout the winter, so keep checking back,” Myers said.

“We feel very fortunate to be in an area with such a vibrant craft brewing scene and to have the support of those businesses while we continue our mission to preserve Pennsylvania’s railroading history.”

Designated driver tickets

will be sold at the event.

“It’s for people who want to get someone safely home or just come in and enjoy some non-alcoholic beverages throughout the course of the evening,” Myers said.

There will also be food trucks on-site, with a list available on the website.

“There will be a good variety of food to enjoy throughout the night,” said Myers.

The event will be held in

Rolling Stock Hall, which features historic locomotives and railroad cars.

“It’s a good opportunity to come out and see the building while enjoying some samples of beer from local craft brewers,” Myers said.

“There’s plenty of space to spread out, engage with friends, and talk to the brewers on their process about their different beers. It’s just a really fun night.”

The site helps make the happening unique. “I always like the building

in the nighttime or after dark,” said Myers. “It gets a little softer out there. The lights of the locomotives and the various cars lend a festive atmosphere. It’s a bit of a wow factor. … It’s just a really fun evening in a really unique space.”

Visitors will not have to worry about the weather at the event. “March can be a little unpredictable, but we have a climate-controlled building,” Myers said. “We have a roof, so rain or shine

we’re going to have a great time and enjoy our

Proceeds will benefit the Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that works to support the museum. “The Friends of the Railroad Museum uses its fundraising for restoration of our historic railroad equipment, as well as the continuation of our educational programs,” Myers said.

Webinars to Focus on Greatest American Cleanup

As the nation prepares to commemorate its 250th anniversary, Keep Chester County Beautiful (KCCB) invites residents, organizations, businesses and school groups to take part in the Greatest American Cleanup in Chester County. The goal of the program is to have 50 separate volunteer groups participating in beautification activities in Chester County by the end of 2026. KCCB has set two webinars as part of the America250PA in Chester County Stewardship Series. The first, “How to Adopt Your Space,” will be held on Thursday, Jan. 29. The second, “How to Host a Safe and Successful Litter Clean-Up Event,” will take place on Wednesday, Feb. 4. To learn more, visit www.chescoplanning.org/ Environmental/KCCB/ A250.cfm.

varieties include Adventurefuls, which are brownie-like cookies with a caramel-flavored cream; Trefoils, which are shortbread cookies; Lemonades, which are shortbread cookies with a lemon-flavored icing; and Caramel deLites, which are crispy cookies coated with caramel and coconut and drizzled with chocolate stripes. Peanut butter varieties are Peanut Butter Patties dipped in chocolate and the Peanut Butter Sandwich, which is an oatmeal cookie with a peanut butter filling.

“Thin Mints and Peanut Butter Patties are the biggest sellers,” noted Peyton. A percentage of sales is

used by the troop for various activities. “They use it toward some bigger trips. Two years ago, they went to see the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. They (recently) went winter camping in the Poconos,” Amanda noted. “This year, they are hoping to go to Washington, D.C., for a long weekend.”

Those who visit the local booths also have an opportunity to donate cookies to Hometown Heroes, a program adopted in 2019 by GSEP. “They will give cookies to the fire department, EMS and police,” noted Amanda.

The goal of the cookie sales, according to GSEP,

is to teach Girl Scouts five essential skills - goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and business ethics. “I learn how to communicate with people and if they say no to buying cookies, you say, ‘Thank you’ and ‘Have a good day,’” said Peyton, a student at Octorara Middle School.

Troop members work in two-hours shifts at the cookie booths, most of the time out-of-doors. “It is a lot of work to be out in the cold, but it is fun to meet all these people,” Peyton shared.

They noted that some people will provide the troop with a donation but will not take a box of cookies. “One guy last year at Tractor Supply gave us $50, and he told us to hand cookies to people who we thought would like them,” Peyton said.

In addition to traditional

Parkesburg

Scouting activities, the troop performs community service. Troop members have collected food for the Octorara Area Food Cupboard and volunteered at Christmas at Christiana events. “In Christiana, (the fire company) has spaghetti nights, and we go and serve people,” Peyton noted.

“They also volunteer at the Harrison House in Christiana,” Amanda added. “The girls ran bingo at one time, and they always write (the senior citizens) Christmas cards.”

“Girl Scouting is a lot of fun; they do great things. It is a great organization,” she said.

According to GSEP, the Girl Scout Cookie Program is the largest girl-led business in the world. Girl Scout Cookie sales will continue through the end of March. For more information, visit the aforementioned website.

includes representatives from the following organizations: the Parkesburg Historical Society, Parkesburg Historical Commission, Parkesburg Lions Club, Parkesburg Free Library, Parkesburg Action Committee (PAC), Parkesburg Parks & Recreation, Parkesburg VFW and the Parkesburg Special Events Committee, along with local businesses, including Dynamic Raceworks, Evolved Tint Solutions, Two Dogs Auto & Cycle and the Grocery Outlet.

“There is at least one if not two representatives from each of those organizations that attend the monthly meetings and help with all the events we are doing,” said Wyatt, who is a member of the historical commission and the historical society.

The proposed schedule of events for the summer celebration includes a Family Movie Night in the Park, which is slated to kick off the weekend on July 3. Events on Saturday, July 4, will include a Community Fair that may feature games, live music, a car show, craft vendors and food trucks.

is planned for July 5 in Minch Park, where the 1920 Parkesburg Iron Company (PICO) baseball team once played. The PICO team was a semiprofessional club that hosted notable players such as Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth and Casey Stengel. The field was also the site of several games between Parkesburg teams and Negro League players during the era of segregation.

Brochures about the activities will be available at the pancake breakfasts and the bingo games.

Organizers believe it is important for Parkesburg to join in with the country’s 250th birthday celebration.

“Chester County started to plan events, so we thought it would be great to do something in Parkesburg,” said Wyatt. “We cannot as a historical group do this ourselves, so I organized a meeting and asked everyone to come to (the historical society’s) history room, and we decided (to do it together). It’s a collaborative effort between all these organizations and businesses.”

Whether you live in a house, apartment, condominium, or modular unit or rent a room, there really is no place like home.

Home is where we find comfort. It is a place where we can kick off our shoes at the end of a long workday and relax. Home is where we eat meals, watch our favorite shows and sporting events on TV, listen to music, play with our pets and share time with friends and family.

Growing up, I lived in a home where all of the meals were enjoyed around the kitchen table. That included morning breakfast cereals eaten hastily before we headed off to school, and Sunday supper, which always meant a pot roast cooked in a pressure cooker. I can still hear the hissing sound from the pot as it let off steam.

In the summer, we ate outside at the picnic table, where we enjoyed the fruits of my dad’s labor - freshly grown tomatoes, peppers, green beans and cucumbers. He grew fruit trees as well, so we always had fresh apples, peaches, cherries and - although they were not my favorite - figs.

Our family room held a giant television, which

Home Sweet Home

was encased in a piece of furniture called a console. There were no flat screens back then. If the TV malfunctioned, we called the appliance repairman, who came out to replace a tube. Of course there was no remote, so we kids were in charge of changing channels. Back then, there weren’t many - mostly the three networks and a few others.

There were no cellphones or laptops; we had to engage with one another directly. We called people on phones that were tethered to the wall. We wrote letters in long hand and mailed out invitations if one of us was hosting a birthday party.

The kitchen was the center of our home. The kitchen table is where we ate, did our homework, played board games, carved pumpkins and dyed Easter eggs. With no online banking or pay apps, the table was where my dad wrote out checks every month to pay the bills. It was also where we had family meetings and made important decisions.

One of the saddest moments in my life was having to sell the old homestead after my parents passed away. The only consolation was that it was sold to a young family with

two little girls and another one on the way.

At closing, I so much wanted to tell them about my family and how we loved that home. I wanted to tell them about the wonderful smells coming from the kitchen where my mom made homemade Easter bread or spaghetti sauce.

I wanted to tell them about my small bedroom upstairs where my imagination came alive as I journeyed through hundreds of books that were stored on bookshelves that my dad built. I wanted to tell them about the cookouts where we ate grilled hamburgers and potato salad and played volleyball in the backyard. I wanted to tell them that the best place to be during a rainstorm was upstairs in the bedrooms so they could listen to the raindrops hit the roof.

I hoped that their kids, like we did, would climb the trees or just appreciate their shade during the hot summer months. Hopefully, like us, they would also have a live Christmas tree and the kids would be able to run down the steps on Christmas morning to see the presents that Santa had left. I also hoped that they would continue to have a garden and take care of my dad’s fruit trees.

Now that the house is theirs, they can create memories in the same way that my family has built new memories in our current home. Although we have a smart TV now with a remote and we do spend time scrolling on our phones, the kitchen remains the most important room in our house. I still have those bookshelves that my dad built filled with books that have been read or are ready to be read. And when it rains, I still like to head upstairs to listen.

A home, whether small or grand, remains a comforting and restful place that keeps us safe from the storms outside as well as those inside of us.
