An Amazing Discovery Fossil And Mineral Club Plans Show BY ANN MEAD ASH
Rosemarie Curcio shows off Marty, one of her resident bats. BY CATHY MOLITORIS
very three hours, an alarm goes off in Rosemarie Curcio’s house. It lets her know it’s time to feed the pups. But these aren’t the kind of pups you may be picturing; instead, they are baby bats, and at the moment, 10 of them live in a bat nursery in the basement of Curcio’s Marietta home. For more than 30 years, Curcio has been rescuing and rehabbing bats. “I’ve always been interested in wildlife,” she said. Originally from New York, she volunteered at an animal rescue but didn’t focus on bats until she spent time in bat boot camp at Bat World Sanctuary in Texas over two summers, and she found her true calling. “So much focus is on the ‘glamour’ species that need help - the
wolves, the bald eagles - bats are the ugly ones,” she remarked. “I’m always for the underdog. I’m fascinated by bats.” She began caring for bats in her New York City apartment - without telling her landlord - and when she retired from teaching special education, she relocated to Marietta in 2009. Her home’s basement provided the perfect place to set up a bat sanctuary. Along with the nursery, the basement currently houses nine additional bats. Several are permanent residents because they are unable to fly, and most are big brown bats. Curcio works with Raven Ridge Wildlife Center in Washington Boro, where she serves on the board as well. When a call comes in about a bat, it’s forwarded to Curcio. Sometimes, she can advise the per-
son on how to help on the spot. “I always tell people to wear gloves and use a towel if they are handling bats,” she said, noting that bats can carry rabies. “Never touch a bat with bare hands.” If a bat appears to be injured or is too young to survive on its own, Curcio will take it in, with the goal of eventually releasing it into the wild. June is pup season, and after a few weeks of formula feeding, the pups will be ready to try flying. Curcio has several large tents set up in her basement for the bats to practice in. Once they are ready, she’ll move them to a rescue in Chester County for outdoor enclosures and more flying opportunities before finally releasing them in a barn near the Pennsylvania and New Jersey border. Curcio admits that her passion might disturb some people, but she
emphasizes that bats play an important role in our ecosystem. “Bats are so important because they eat insects. They will consume mosquitoes,” she stated. “Farmers should want them around because they eat beetles and other pests that attack crops.” Her round-the-clock care of the pups means she can never take a vacation during the summer, and she goes about two months without a full night’s sleep, but Curcio doesn’t see giving up her specialty anytime soon. W hat keeps her going? “Insanity,” she said, with a laugh. “I just really love them. When you bring a pup home and you’re able to see it do well and eventually be out on its own, that’s what keeps you going.” If you find a bat that needs help, contact Raven Ridge at 717808-2652.

When paleontologist Chris Haefner of West Hempfield found a fossil in a church yard in York, he suspected he had uncovered something special. “It was an unusual creature,” said Haefner, who eventually learned the fossil represented an animal previously unknown to mankind. “It was not just a new species. It was a new genus - a new family,” said Haefner. The creature is now officially called “Yorkicystis haefneri” - after York, where it was found, and Haefner, who found it. Haefner will have an exhibit about the fossil and speak about his find at the Lancaster County Fossil and Mineral Club’s Christmas in July Extravaganza to be held at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster, on Saturday, July 23, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, July 24, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A nominal fee will be charged to enter. Haefner has been involved with rocks and minerals since the age of 12, when his uncle employed him as a rock cracker in making rock and mineral boxes to be sold at museums, including the National Museum of Natural History at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. Haefner founded the county-wide club with his wife, Cathy, who now serves as treasurer, in 2013. At the May 2014 meeting, the group learned that the Cityview Church in West York had moved rock to a specific area of land when a new building was constructed. “The rock (in that area) is Kinzers shale,” explained Haefner. “It looked fossiliferous,” he noted, adding that the rock features rare echinoderms - marine invertebrates. Haefner gained permission to complete pocket-hole digs of about 18 inches deep, and he with help from Cathy, set about searching for fossils. He found the

first to two Yorkicystis fossils in May 2017, and posted a photo on his Facebook page. A “friend” saw the post and alerted Dr. Samuel Zamora, a paleontologist specializing in echinoderms who has worked at the Smithsonian. Haefner surrendered the fossil, and later a second specimen, to be studied by Zamora, along with two researchers from London and one from Baylor University in Waco, Texas. The fossil now resides at the Natural History Museum in London. “The only way to get something noted and named is to give it to science,” said Haefner, who said he wishes that York had a museum that could be home to the fossils. “In York there have been profound discoveries,” noted Haefner, citing the genus of Trilobite discovered in that area in 1901. No Obstacle Too Large BY ANN MEAD ASH
When Josh March, owner of emPower Training Systems, 276 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster, first heard about human trafficking in Lancaster County during a presentation at Grace Community Church in Willow Street a few years ago, he was struck by its prevalence. “Most people don’t realize human trafficking is a big issue in our area,” he said. “As a father and husband, it really hits home.” In response to what he had learned, the Obstacle Course Racing (OCR) world champion and coach and season nine “American Ninja Warrior” alumnus decided to take action. He will donate a portion of the funds from the obstacle course event he holds to North Star Initiative, an organization that has been fighting human trafficking in Lancaster for more than a decade. The organization operates The Harbor, known as Lancaster County’s first restoration
home for survivors of sex trafficking and sexual exploitation, and plans to have a Survivors Center completed by the end of August. According to North Star interim executive director Janelle Esbenshade, the organization recently graduated two women who have completed the program and are living independently. The third annual emPower stadium-style obstacle course race will be held at the stadium where the Barnstormers play on Saturday, Aug. 27. The three-mile course was designed by March to include more than 20 fun and challenging obstacles. ”It’s for all levels,” noted Esbenshade. “There’s the open race for people who just want to experience it, and they have a competitive race where there are cash prizes.” Esbenshade added that there is a team race for those who want to gather friends to join them and a family race where parents can participate with their children and have fun. According to March, the fit-

ness challenge takes place on the field, underneath the stadium, in the batting cages, and outside the stadium on the property and in the parking lot, with the finish line at the first-base line. “It’s an exciting, fun, and unique event,” he said. Each year that the obstacle course challenge has been held, emPower has given a percentage of the proceeds to a local organization. “ We choose to give back every
year,” explained March. “We are Christian-based, and we believe everything we have is a blessing.” The choice of North Star as a faith-based organization was important to March. “We look for a local nonprofit with a mission that really resonates with us,” he said. Cruisin’ For Cats Cats and cars will come together at Columbia Animal Shelter when the organization hosts the Cruisin’ for Cats Car Show. The event will be held at the shelter, 265 S. 10th St., on Saturday, July 30, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The rain date is Sunday, July 31. “This is our fourth annual event, and each year, it’s gotten bigger and better,” said Tammy Jalbert, executive director of the shelter. “The first year, we had 55 cars participate. Last year, we had 200 cars, and our goal for this year is between 250 and 300 cars. That’s about the maximum we could host in the space.” All types of vehicles, including cars, trucks and motorcycles, are invited to participate in the event. “We have everything from vintage cars to newer models,” Jalbert said. “We had an old ambulance last year, and it won a prize.”
Announce your engagement or marriage in your local papers for free.
The top 20 cars will win awards in a variety of categories, including Best in Show, she said. The event will also feature a basket giveaway, music from a DJ and food. “The shelter will be open, so people can come in and take a look,” Jalbert noted. Proceeds from the event will benefit programs at the shelter, including a new wellness clinic. Hosting a car show is a perfect fit for the Columbia Animal Shelter, Jalbert explained, because the shelter was created through the Harold and Judy McKonly Family Foundation. “They were the founders of KleenRite Corporation, which provides supplies for the car wash industry, so it really seems fitting that we’re doing a car show,” she stated, adding that it was a lifelong dream of Judy’s to open an animal shelter. “Without the car wash business, this place

wouldn’t exist.” Last year’s car show drew a large crowd not only of participants but of spectators as well, and Jalbert is hopeful that this year’s event will do the same. “We’d like everybody from the community to come out,” she said. “It’s a really great family event, and it’s free to attend. Come out on a Saturday, check out the cars, enjoy some food, possibly win a prize or two. It’s really fun for the whole family.” Registration for participation in the car show will be accepted at the event, but there is a discount for people who register ahead of time. Research Farm Opens To Public Penn State Extension’s Southeast Agricultural Research and Extension Center (SEAREC), 1446 Auction Road, Manheim, will be open to the public until Wednesday, Aug. 31, from dawn to dusk. This research farm is the site of dozens of vegetable, field crop, and envi-
ronmental research projects; one of the largest flower trials in the country; and five Master Gardener-designed idea (demonstration) gardens. Master Gardener volunteers have designed, planted, and cared for five idea gardens: native plants, vegetable and herb, butterfly, potager, and
raised beds. Members of the public can use these gardens to learn gardening techniques, discover novel plants, and get fresh ideas for their home and community gardens. There are also gardens at the pergola and the Welcome and Research Centers, as well as in-ground perennial and annual trials. The farm also includes Blooms and Butterflies - also known as Bees, Bugs, and Blooms - a large, established native plant trial plot that is 10 years old. Through the years, a variety of research projects have been conducted in the plot, and Master Gardener volunteers continue to monitor and track pollinator activity there. Anyone who wants to beat the heat should visit early in the day as shade is limited.
The best opportunities to view butterflies, bees, and other pollinators will be on warm, sunny days. Site maps and educational materials are available at the Welcome Center; visitors are asked to return the maps when they have finished their visit. Penn State’s Master Gardener program has been serving Lancaster County since 1988. Approximately 110 volunteers educate the public on sustainable horticulture and environmental stewardship through a Garden Hotline, webinars and classes, demonstration gardens, and poison prevention programs in schools. To reach the Lancaster County Garden Hotline, call 717-394-6851 or email LancasterMG@psu.edu.

Tracie Young of Raven Ridge Wildlife Center brought a variety of animals to Manheim Township Public Library for a live demonstration. BY ANN MEAD ASH
On July 7, more than 40 children and adults gathered at the Manheim Township Public Library for a presentation by Tracie Young, wildlife rehabilitator and founder of Raven Ridge Wildlife Center, a nonprofit organization located in Washington Boro. Young brought along a few Raven Ridge ambassadors to help her discuss the importance of Pennsylvania wildlife. “There are only 31 rehabilitators in the state,” said Young of her work at Raven Ridge, noting that the organization specializes in birds of prey, such as owls, vultures, hawks, and eagles. She explained that her licensure, through the Pennsylvania Game Commission and others, enables her to

be moved except to help them cross a road. Holding Oberyn, Young shared some information about black rat snakes. “These are one of the most docile snakes,” she said. “They can climb trees and buildings. They go after bird eggs.” Dottie the opossum became an ambassador after three attempts to release her to the wild failed. “She is a Virginia opossum,” said Young, who noted that opossums do not carry rabies because their body temperature is too low to harbor the virus. Ambassador Monster came to the center as a baby with a runny nose. Monster’s mother abandoned her, and Young suspected the baby had a sinus infection. She eventually discovered that Monster had a deviated septum and could never live in the wild. Pharaoh the great horned
owl is a foster dad for the center as well as an ambassador, helping to raise about 40 baby owls in the last two years. He can turn his head 270 degrees due to an extra vertebra in his neck. Pharaoh was hit by a car and his wing never healed properly, so he lives at the center. Baron von Vulture was also hit by a car. Young explained that vultures can eat dead and decaying animals because their stomach is more acidic than a car battery, allowing them to even eat animals that have died of rabies. She noted that the area from Lancaster to Gettysburg has a higher concentration of vultures than anywhere else in the state. “(The vultures) followed the soldiers in the Civil War,” she explained. rehabilitate orphaned and abandoned wildlife to return them to their native environment. She explained that without a license, it is illegal to raise or keep wildlife. Some animals brought to Raven Ridge, unfortunately, are not able to be returned to the wild, so Young keeps them as ambassadors. At the library, Young introduced attendees to Eastern box turtles Ozzy and Harriet; Oberyn, a black rat snake; Dottie the opossum; Monster the skunk; Pharaoh the great horned owl; and Baron von Vulture, a black vulture. Young explained that Harriet has only three legs, but she is one of fastest turtles at the center. “They are losing their habitat to development,” she said of box turtles, further explaining that the turtles spend their entire lives within a 1-mile radius and should not

On Saturday, Aug. 6, a treasure hunt will kick off throughout the state. The prize will be $6,000 for the winner and financial support for three nonprofits. Treasure Adventures will feature a statewide team hunt for a prize token, with proceeds from ticket sales benefiting The Tourist Inn Benefit Committee in Hellam, the York office of Make-AWish and Give Kids The World Village, a Make-A-Wish resort for families in central Florida. The event is hosted by Tammy Mitzel, who founded Treasure Adventures in 2020. “I am so excited to be hosting (the) treasure hunt as a way to give back to three great charities that have supported my own family,” said Mitzel, who lives in Wrightsville and is the parent of a Wish child. “They have given
memories. … This is our way of paying it forward so that these groups can continue to bring happiness and hope to families who need it most.” Mitzel got the idea for Treasure Adventures after participating in a nationwide treasure hunt sponsored by the owner of Jelly Belly a couple of years ago. “I was disappointed, not that I didn’t win, but that I didn’t figure it out,” she stated. “I don’t like to give up.” In 2013, Mitzel participated in “Wheel of Fortune,” and she won big. “I’ve always been into brain teasers and word puzzles,” she said. “I love to challenge my mind.” For the August hunt, participants will sign up online, where they will receive a list of rules and regulations. There is no limit to the number of people who can be on a team, Mitzel

noted, and the prize token will be hidden somewhere in Pennsylvania. “It will not be hidden somewhere dangerous. It will be in a public place, not on private property,” she remarked, adding that accommodations will be made for people with disabilities who want to participate if they contact Mitzel ahead of time for details. At 11 a.m. on Aug. 6, a riddle will be released to all participants, and the hunt will begin. If no team finds the treasure that day, additional clues will be released every 24 hours until someone wins. Miztel’s advice for the winning team? “Your team can be as big as you like, but think about how many people you want to split the prize money with,” she said. “And use the internet once you have the clue. You’re going to need it.” She also noted that tickets are limited, so the pool of participants will be on the smaller size, increasing the chances of winning.
