Church Will Provide Tools to Help Cope With Grief

Finding a healthy way to deal with grief is a crucial tool for everyone to possess, and it’s perhaps even more important over the holidays.

That’s why the Millersville Community Church’s Circles of Strength program for December is “Responding to Grief, Surviving to Thriving.”

The free session will be held Saturday, Dec. 27, from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at the church, 163 W. Frederick St., Millersville.

Preregistration by Wednesday, Dec. 24, is encouraged but not mandatory in order to attend the session. Contact Kelly Dennis at 717-951-0266 or kelly@kelly fdennis.com to register or for additional information.

The program will help attendees realize the impact grief has on their lives, learn mechanisms to heal, and find local and online

Grant Reinforces

Within the complex world of nonprofits there exists a separate, supportive world - the world of grants.

Subsidized by philanthropic foundations, organizations and businesses, financial grants serve a very practical purpose. But also associated with grants are this connectivity piece and a very specific affirming element.

“Anytime we receive a grant it’s a communication of trust,” said Melinda Clark, who’s been the CEO of North Star Initiative (NSI) for three years. “It means that people and organizations see the importance of our mission. It means we can do amazing work for (human trafficking survivors), and they’re flourishing. It’s a vote of confidence and support for our mission.”

On Oct. 20, NSI, a Lititz-area nonprofit dedicated to assisting

Giving Back Is Part of Patrick Trimble’s DNA

When it begins at home, generosity is a learned behavior. In some ways, Patrick Trimble’s story reflects the overall generosity of Lancaster County residents. But it also possesses the power to inspire others and create social awareness.

“My parents were a tremendous influence on me,” said Trimble. “My parents weren’t people of means, but they did the right things. They taught me how to do the right things. They were simple, hard-working people who raised six children. The value system they instilled in me has helped form who I am today.”

Who Trimble is is an altruist. Over the last few years, the 65-year-old resident of Manheim Township has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to local charitable causes. But to no Lancaster County nonprofit has he donated more money than Aaron’s Acres.

“I’m a Christian. I believe in God,” said Trimble, who works as a Realtor for Berkshire Hathaway in Lancaster. “Maybe that’s a part of it. I don’t think of it as ‘It’s not mine.’ I look at it as ‘I have it, and I want to give back.’”

Humble, unassuming and empathetic, Trimble has donated more than $250,000 of his earnings to Aaron’s Acres over the last 13 years. In addition, Trimble has participated in fundraisers in support of Aaron’s Acres, a nonprofit located at 1861 Charter Lane, Suite 114, Lancaster, that assists families with disabilities through recreational activities like summer camps.

“The work they do with the kids is fantastic,” said Trimble.

Trivia Event Planned

The Moravian Center of Lancaster will present a trivia contest on Saturday, Dec. 20, from 4 to 6 p.m. on the second floor of 227 N. Queen St., Lancaster. Featured trivia questions will be about music and artists from the ‘50s through the ‘80s.

The event is free, with prizes awarded awarded to the first-, second-, and third-place winners. Doors will open at 3 p.m. with snacks available for sale.

For more information, call 717-278-9008.

“These kids have disabilities, and (Aaron’s Acres) runs summer camps. The kids are there, they’re playing and it’s heart-warming. They’re assisting the kids, but they’re also supporting the parents. Some of these parents never get a break. (Aaron’s Acres is) expanding their programs, and they’re giving something to kids and parents. I have friends who have kids with disabilities, so I see the other side of it. I know the money is being used wisely, I like that it’s a local organization and that it’s flowing to an end result.”

Trimble initially became better acquainted with Aaron’s Acres’mission through a fundraising golf outing in 2012. To help Aaron’s Acres, Trimble

began pledging $100 donations to the organization for every home he sold, and then he padded those donation with even more of his funds.

At the beginning, Trimble’s intention wasn’t to donate a quarter of a million dollars to Aaron’s Acres; it just sort of accumulated that way.

“If we had a good year, I’d donate a little more,” said Trimble. “Each year we’d donate money. Over the first few years, I really didn’t really pay too much attention to it. Then it kind of became, ‘Let’s see if we can do a little better than last year.’ It’s kind of evolved. We didn’t start with a specific goal.”

In his role as a Realtor, Trimble receives a lot of requests from local schools, churches and organizations to donate money or to support fundraisers. His contributions can also serve as business marketing or as a way to promote goodwill in the community.

“I’m successful, and I want to give back,” said Trimble. “My father always told me that society functions best when more are giving back than taking. This is my way to give back to society and Lancaster County.”

As time has passed and Trimble has evolved as a person, it might be that his priorities have changed right along with his perspective. Maybe he sees things in a different light now.

“There’s no doubt about that,” said Trimble. “When you’re younger, you have a few more bills. Now I have more breathing room, and I’ve become more generous.”

Aaron’s Acres was first founded in 1998 as a summer camp to provide recreational opportunities for families with disabled children. Since then, the organization has expanded its services and activities to include year-round programming and include young adults with disabilities. resources that can assist in the grieving process.

Church member Marj Paradise will be the guest speaker. Paradise, a retired psychologist, has worked at Philhaven and in the Ephrata Hospital Mental Health Unit. She also worked in the Hempfield School District for 28 years. Paradise will talk about her losses in life, including the death of her daughter, Elizabeth, at the age of 25.

“We all have gone through experiences of grief, obviously,” said church member Bruce Heydt, who is one of the team leaders of the Empowered By Grace ministry. “I have lost both parents and my only sibling. When my mother, who passed away from cancer, was going through her struggle, my brother passed away during that struggle. And when the holidays

came, it was just different because it used to be the family would get together. It’s different now because when Christmas came, there was an empty chair.”

Heydt recalls it was a particularly trying time for his mother, especially since she was dealing with her own cancer diagnosis.

“The holidays bring back those memories,” he said. “Of course, the loss goes on day by day throughout the year. I think (part of) of dealing with grief is that you move on and you continue your life and you could even use some of those experiences to help others like we’re doing here.”

Managing the initial shock of losing a loved one is taxing. “One of the things that really struck me in the lessons that we teach is that those who participate in that

group, even in those early stages of shock, have a useful purpose,” Heydt said. “We need a brief period of kind of shock of numbness until we can make that adjustment and then we move on to intense sadness, but even the sadness has a purpose. It validates that there’s really something going on here, and I think that’s an important point. Grief is not a bad thing to feel. It’s a loss. It’s natural. … We need to express, in a healthy way, our grief.”

Dennis, a church member and a licensed professional counselor, stated that the meetings are designed to provide encouragement and assistance. “We created Circles of Strength workshops for support because research really says that support is the best indicator of recovery from any sort of mental illness,” she said. “We want to create these circles of family, and friends, and peers, and people who have struggled and/or are struggling, so that we can bring them together and show love, compassion. There’s lots of information in these groups, but then there’s also a lot of personal sharing a lot of times. Even though it’s only an hour and a half, people really can feel like they’ve really made a connection and they’ve bonded.”

Heydt noted that “Responding to Grief, Surviving to Thriving” will also be helpful to people who are not currently experiencing grief. “Sometimes people will say, ‘I don’t need that workshop because I’m not grieving,’” he said. “But I think it’s a healthy thing to do it and probably a productive way to learn some of these strategies

while we’re in a good spot. Because when we’re actually in the intense grief, that’s a bad time to learn new strategies because our minds are just not thinking clearly sometimes. If we can learn how to help others along and how to be a support for others while we’re not in crisis, then we’re better prepared when that crisis does come.”

individuals who have been victims of human trafficking, received a $15,000 grant for daily operations from B.J.’s Wholesale Club, which is headquartered in Marlborough, Mass., and operates a local location at 110 Centerville Road, Lancaster. The grant process, which was initiated by a local supporter and volunteer of NSI, took about four months to complete.

After B.J.’s Wholesale Club invited NSI to apply for the grant, NSI composed a formal grant proposal and submitted it, after which the request was granted.

“It’s a big part of our annual budget and a grant we haven’t gotten before,” said Clark. “To have a local tie to a national business is meaningful. I’d say that it’s larger than average. It’s a really big deal to us.”

“B.J.’s has a deep commitment to supporting families in the communities where we live and work,” said Kirk Saville, B.J.’s Wholesale Club’s head of corporate communications. “We are honored to continue supporting the organizations our team members care about most and to live our purpose of taking care of families who depend on us.”

With assistance and input from Clark, NSI development director April Miller wrote and composed the B.J.’s Wholesale Club grant application in about six hours.

To this point of 2025, NSI has applied for 13 total financial grants, five of which were approved and four of which were declined, while the status of the other four have yet to be deter -

mined. NSI is planning to apply for three more grants before the end of the year.

“April was primarily responsible for this B.J.’s Wholesale Club grant,” said Clark. “We want to make sure it’s a match. In B.J.’s case, we were recommended to them; they invited us to provide an extensive application of what the money would be used for. We had to be clear we were doing things that fit their purposes. By their bylaws, they have to make donations. We have to be a committed nonprofit doing good work in a cause. We want human trafficking to end. If we can show we’re truly making a difference, we’re also providing an opportunity that grant makers are looking for.”

Grants represent about 10% of NSI’s annual operating budget. The largest source of NSI’s funding - about 50% - comes from the local community, including business donations, private donations and fundraising efforts.

Typically, the grants that NSI receives range between $3,000 and $50,000.

“There are so many grant-making entities,” said Clark, a resident of East Hempfield Township. “There are a lot of philanthropists who have some funds and are looking for specific causes. They have a heart to be generous to the causes that matter to them. It’s become competitive because there are so many nonprofits. There are always opportunities for generosity to causes that matter to you.”

“The grant programs are important to us, and they can come in chunks,” added Clark. “Grant funding is exciting, and it makes a difference, but a lot of grant makers don’t fund daily operations.”

With a focus on assisting survivors of human trafficking in Lancaster and Berks counties, NSI provides services like job training, an emergency shelter, restoration and continuing support of graduates. NSI employs 24 workers, seven on a full-time basis and 17 on a part-time basis, and benefits from the service of as many volunteers.

“A grant like this is really an expression of confidence,” said Clark. “This work is so crucial, and the way we do it is excellent. Anytime we receive a grant it’s affirmation. But everything we do is because of community funding. Most of our funding comes from local people. We exist because the whole community is behind us.”
