ornerstone Youth Center seeks to provide opportunities for youths to experience personal growth, and LINKBANK wants to support that mission. LINKBANK recently presented Cornerstone with a check for $3,000 to help with the costs of the youth center’s Empower program.
“This program is aimed at empowering at-risk youth within our community and is designed to provide these individuals with the skills, resources and support necessary to unlock their leadership potential and become positive influencers in our community,” said Jim Bush, executive director of Cornerstone Youth Center.
As Bush explained, the program focuses on five key pillars: Building a Life of Character and Integrity, Developing Healthy Relationships and Establishing Boundaries, Conflict Resolution and Overcoming

Every New Year’s Day, the roar of engines becomes a rallying cry for local veterans as hundreds of motorcycle riders hit the road for a cause. The tradition will continue on Thursday, Jan. 1, 2026, with the 17th annual benefit ride, an energetic kickoff to the year that blends camaraderie, charity and a 25-mile scenic convoy along the Susquehanna River.
Registration will begin at 10 a.m. at the Walter S. Ebersole

As the Rotary Club of Mount Joy approaches its 100th anniversary in 2026, the organization is preparing to mark that milestone with a project rooted in remembrance. The club has a long history of enhancing the town, from installing the Main Street clock to helping build Rotary Park and contributing significantly to the rebuild of Kids Joyland. Now, Rotarians are turning their efforts toward a project that carries deep local meaning: the creation of a Malmedy Massacre Memorial at Veterans War Memorial Park.
The memorial will honor the more than 80 American soldiers who were executed during the Malmedy Massacre on Dec. 17, 1944, during the Battle of the Bulge. It will also pay special tribute to the 10 Lancaster County soldiers from Battery B of the 285th Field Artillery Observation Battalion, among them Mount Joy’s own Harold Billow, the last-known survivor of the World War II massacre, who passed away in 2022 at age 99.
“The Rotary Club of Mount Joy has always been committed to enhancing their local Mount Joy community in the Rotary spirit of Service Above Self,” said Rotarian Dave Christian. “The club’s primary focus for the memorial is to tell the story of that horrific day, so it is never forgotten.”
The massacre unfolded on a bitterly cold morning near Malmedy, Belgium. An American convoy of about 30 vehicles unknowingly approached a crossroads from the east at the same moment a heavily armed German SS unit

gunned and forced to surrender,
were gathered into a field, where, moments later, the German soldiers opened fire. Unarmed POWs were gunned down where they stood; some were shot at close range as they lay wounded. Only those who managed to feign death, including Cpl. Billow, survived long enough for the Germans to leave the area.
Five of the 10 Lancaster
County soldiers present were killed that day. Sylvester Herchelroth of Marietta, Charles Haines of Columbia, George Steffy of Stevens, Luke Swartz of Stevens and Carl Frey of Hopeland all lost their lives. The others - Billow, Bill Ream of Elizabethtown, Robert “Sketch” Mearig of Lititz, James Mattera of Marietta and Ernest Bechtel of Reinholds - returned home

HARTZ Physical Therapy (PT) recently presented a check for $17,000 to Milagro House, a local nonprofit that provides safe housing and supportive services to women and children in crisis.
The money was the result of HARTZ PT’s 22nd annual Fall Blast 5K Run, Walk and Kids Color Run, which was held Oct. 4 at John R. Bonfield Elementary School in Lititz. The event drew hundreds of runners, walkers and supporters from across Lancaster County.
Through the HARTZ PT Charitable Organization, founded in 2020, HARTZ PT spends an average of 50 volunteer hours and contributes more than $1,000 per employee in support of local charities each year. To date, the company has raised more than $386,500 by planning various charitable events, including an April food drive to benefit a Power Packs Project called Feed the Need and its annual Spring

American Legion Post 185, 255 W. Main St., Mount Joy. Riders will depart at 1 p.m., traveling the river route before ending at the Elizabethtown American Legion Post 329, 240 N. Hanover St.
Before the engines rev, members of the auxiliary will serve breakfast at the Mount Joy Legion. After the ride, participants can enjoy a pork and sauerkraut dinner at the Elizabethtown post.
Years ago, a group of friends got together and decided the best way to ring in the new year was by doing something they love - riding their motorcycles. They put together the event to raise funds for veterans at the Lebanon VA Medical Center.
“All of the money we raise goes directly to the veterans,” shared Michael Hehnly, finance officer for the Mount Joy American Legion. “They can use that money to buy hygiene items or other things they may need.”
Last year’s ride raised $40,000, he said. Over the years, the event has garnered almost $350,000 for veterans.
Even with its serious mission, the day is full of fun and fellowship. Each year, one participant is named Baby New Year and arrives in a baby costume and sash. This year’s
honoree is Mike Kaylor.
Although motorcycles make up the majority of the convoy, the event is open to all types of vehicles, and no Legion affiliation is required for participants.
More than 450 people joined the ride last year, Michael said, noting that one of his favorite aspects of the event is experiencing the waves and shouts of encouragement from people who watch the convoy as it travels past their house along the route.
Local businesses also contribute to the event. Hummer’s Meats donates the post-ride meal, and Hummelstown Print House makes the event T-shirts.
“Any business that would like to donate is invited to,” Michael said. “We’ll be collecting donations up until the day of the ride.”
For Michael and his wife, Lori, the ride is personal. Both are veterans, and both understand the importance of giving back. While Michael will ride in the convoy, Lori, who also rides, will not join the group that day but will instead help to prepare the post-meal activities at the Elizabethtown Legion.

“We do this ride in any kind of weather,” Michael said. “It’s a really fun tradition, but more importantly, it’s a way to support our veterans. They’ve given so much to us, and we just want to give back to them.”
For more information or to register in advance for the ride, visit https://bit.ly/3D3WAZb or call 717-629-7754. Participants may also register on the day of the event.

after the war.
For decades, Billow honored his fallen comrades by displaying 87 American flags in his yard every Memorial Day, Veterans Day and Dec. 17. Those flags became a poignant personal ritual and now serve as the inspiration for the new community memorial.
“The inspiration for the memorial was heavily influenced by Eagle Scout Todjr Dohl of Mount Joy, who was designing a Malmedy memorial project several years back for his Eagle Scout project,” Christian said. “The Rotary Club of Mount Joy chose to give new life to Todjr’s vision, carrying forward most of his proposed design elements.”
The walkway surrounding the memorial will be lined with donor-sponsored, laser-etched brick pavers. Individuals, families, organizations and businesses are invited to purchase a paver in honor of one of the Malmedy soldiers.
Ten larger brick pavers - each bearing the name of one of the Lancaster County soldiers present at Malmedy - are available for sponsorship. Sixteen additional pavers will display World War II service branch insignias, mottos and Gold Star symbols honoring families who lost loved ones in the conflict.

We encourage local nonprofit groups, schools, churches, and others to submit news releases. Dated articles, highlighting local activities and events, and undated articles of general interest are used as space allows. Related photographs of good quality, with complete identification, are encouraged.

The club’s proposed memorial incorporates symbolism in its central feature: a field of 87 miniature American flags, arranged exactly as Billow placed them each year. Set in river gravel and illuminated at night, the field will serve as a quiet but powerful reminder of the soldiers lost at Malmedy. The flags will remain in place year-round, except during times of heavy snow.
A granite monument with a bronze plaque will stand beside the flag field, offering visitors a brief account of the Malmedy Massacre. A stone bench will provide a reflective space for those who wish to pause, remember or pray. The memorial area will be accessible by an ADA-compliant walkway and surrounded by plantings of red, white and blue flowers and several small flowering trees.
Community involvement is central to the project’s design.
The Rotary Club estimates the total cost of the memorial at $35,000 to $40,000. If fundraising progresses quickly, the goal is to complete and dedicate the site on Memorial Day 2026.
“If contributions exceed expectations, we hope to add a historical storyboard to the memorial space that would pictorially and descriptively convey the story of the Malmedy Massacre and the 10 Lancaster soldiers who were there,” Christian said. Community support will be essential in bringing the project to life. Donations of any amount will help ensure that the memorial stands as a lasting tribute to the men who never returned home and as an educational reminder for future generations.
Those wishing to contribute can visit www.mountjoyrotary .org and click on the Malmedy Massacre Memorial link or contact Rotarian Andy Dieck at 717-327-6912 or sfh@sheetz funeralhome.com.

Obstacles, Financial Management and Stewardship and Community Service and Civic Responsibility. The program is designed to train future leaders to be financially responsible while promoting personal growth.
“Through Empower, at-risk youth will have the opportunity to engage in a series of carefully crafted workshops, activities and mentorship opportunities focused on developing essential leadership skills, such as effective communication, teamwork, decision making and conflict resolution,” Bush shared. “Some activities that help teach students these skills are archery, escape rooms, rock climbing and obstacle courses. These opportunities to face new challenges will give the students valuable insights into their own strengths and capabilities, ultimately boosting their self-confidence and self-esteem.”
This year’s Empower program will run on Thursdays from June 11 through July 16, 2026.
This is the third year for the program and the second year that LINKBANK has presented a grant to Cornerstone to help offset the program’s costs.
“The money from the grant will provide the students with workshop materials, including workbooks, backpacks, T-shirts, lunches and admission to the activity destinations,” Bush said. “Each graduate of the program will also receive a graduation jacket at the graduation dinner.”
Located at 95 S. Wilson Ave., Elizabethtown, Cornerstone Youth Center is a nonprofit organization with a mission to provide a safe and fun environment where youths can build healthy relationships, be introduced to the Gospel and experience wholeness in life through Christ.
“We have after-school programs for middle and high school students each day,” Bush commented. “Our facility includes a skatepark, rock climbing wall, music room, café and many activities for students to discover new hobbies, interests or hidden talents!”
Cornerstone typically serves

20 to 30 students daily, providing programming and support for more than 150 individuals each school year.
“Our vision is to continue the work of Jesus Christ by meeting the spiritual, physical and emotional needs of youth in partnership with their families, local churches and the community,” Bush remarked. “Our center is a place where young people encounter the love of Christ; receive mentoring from caring adults; and engage in purposeful activities that build life skills, spiritual depth and community awareness.”
He expressed thanks to LINKBANK for the business’s continued support.
“With the support of this grant, we aim to expand our impact, reaching more students with programs that inspire hope, encourage personal growth and empower the next generation to lead with integrity and compassion,” he said.
As a nonprofit, Cornerstone is always seeking funding sources for its programs. It will hold its annual banquet on Thursday, March 26, 2026, at the Star Barn at Stone Gables Estate in Elizabethtown. Seth Joyner, former Philadelphia Eagle and current Eagles broadcaster, will be the keynote speaker. Banquet sponsorships are available by contacting Sammi Simmons, development coordinator, at 717367-0000, ext. 4. For more information on Cornerstone Youth Center, visit https:// cornerstoneetown.org.

The members of Cross Roads Church have a message for the community. “You don’t have to be alone on Christmas,” said Clare Funck. “Come and fellowship with us.”
Funck is one of the many volunteers who invite people to a free Christmas meal on Thursday, Dec. 25, at the church, 800 Donegal Springs Road, Mount Joy. The meal is available for dine-in and will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The menu will feature all of the traditional holiday fare - turkey, stuffing, gourmet potatoes, green beans and a variety of desserts. Everything is donated and prepared by volunteers.
“When you come in the door, you’ll be greeted by a church member who will welcome you in,” said Kendric Bert, who is chairing the event. “You’ll go into the gym, and we’ll seat you for the meal.”

As Funck explained, people will be seated with others to encourage camaraderie.
“We try to fill the tables up,” she said. “That way, everyone has some fellowship. That’s really the goal of this meal, to encourage fellowship.”
Church member Joe McFarland originated the meal almost 30 years ago.
“There were a lot of places that did Thanksgiving meals, but at the time, there was nobody that had Christmas meals,” he recalled. “It’s such a special day, and there should be something for people who might be alone.”
He took the idea to the church members, who worried he’d have trouble finding volunteers on Christmas Day and instead encouraged him to hold the meal on Christmas Eve. The first meal was held on Dec. 24, with about 50 people attending.
The next year, Joe pushed for a Christmas Day meal, noting that it was important to him to have the meal on the holiday.
“It’s been that way ever since,” he said. “We’ve never had an issue with volunteers. In fact, we’ve even had to turn some volunteers away,
because we had enough.”
Although volunteers start as early as 6 a.m. and the day does not conclude until late afternoon, it’s become a tradition at the church, Joe said.
“The original purpose of this meal was for our community to enjoy fellowship on Christmas,” he said, noting that his family, including his wife, Ruth, have also helped with the event since the start. “It’s about sharing Christ’s love on such a special day.”
He’s also noticed that the meal has connected people far beyond a one-time experience.
“It’s about building relationships,” he said. “We have people that come back year after year after year. We look forward to seeing each other every year. That’s the neat part.”
For Bert, the meal provides an opportunity to bless others while counting his own blessings.
“It makes me thankful for what I do have,” he said. “I do have family that’s close and can have a meal, but there are people that can’t do that, so this is a way to give back.”
Funck has participated as a volunteer for more than 20 years.
“I moved from New York, and my family was not in PA,” she said. “Joe approached me and asked if I’d like to help on Christmas Day, and with no family in the area, I felt like it was serving me as much as I was serving them. And that’s what Christmas is all about - helping others.”
While there is no charge for the meal, people may bring an item to donate to the Mount Joy Food Bank if they would like to, Joe said.
“There is no obligation to do that. This meal is our gift to the community,” he said. “We want to tell people, ‘Come join us on Christmas. Don’t stay home.’”
Reservations are requested but not required for the meal. To make a reservation, visit https:// crossroadsbic.com/christmas. Takeout meals may be available under special circumstances. To arrange for takeout, call the church at 717-653-1616.

The District has policies and procedures in effect governing the collection, maintenance, destruction, and disclosure to third parties of this information. For information about these policies and procedures, as well as right of confidentiality and access to educational records, you may contact the building principal in writing.
Screening and Gifted Identification Process:
In adherence to PA Regulations for Gifted Education, the Elizabethtown Area School District supports a multiple criteria method for identifying eligible students who may be gifted. Teachers, parents, school counselors, a school psychologist, administrators, and other individuals at the parents’ request are involved in the process. The process includes a review of classroom performance and school records, use of rating scales and parental input, and evaluation by school psychologist and multidisciplinary evaluation. All students in the gifted education program demonstrate a need for specially designed instruction.
Parents who suspect that their child is in need of specially designed instruction beyond that required in 22 Pa. School Code Section 4 may request in writing their child be evaluated under the criteria of 22 Pa. School Code Section 16.22.
