Giving Back Is Part of Patrick Trimble’s DNA
BY JEFF FALK
When it begins at home, generosity is a learned behavior.
In some ways, Patrick Trimble’s story reflects the overall generosity of Lancaster County residents. But it also possesses the power to inspire others and create social awareness.
“My parents were a tremendous influence on me,” said Trimble. “My parents weren’t people of means, but they did the right things. They taught me how to do the right things. They were simple, hard-working people who raised six children. The value system they

instilled in me has helped form who I am today.”
Who Trimble is is an altruist. Over the last few years, the 65-year-old resident of Manheim
Township has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to local charitable causes. But to no Lancaster County nonprofit has he donated more money than Aaron’s Acres.

Grant

BY JEFF FALK
Within the complex world of nonprofits there exists a separate, supportive world - the world of grants.
Subsidized by philanthropic foundations, organizations and businesses, financial grants serve a very practical purpose. But also associated with grants are this connectivity piece and a very specific affirming element.
“Anytime we receive a grant it’s a communication of trust,” said Melinda Clark, who’s been the CEO of North Star Initiative (NSI) for three years. “It means that people and organizations see the importance of our mission. It means we can do amazing work for (human trafficking survivors), and they’re flourishing. It’s a vote of confidence and support for our mission.”

Buzz Into 2026 With Beekeeping Skills
BY CAT SHANNON
Looking to try a new hobby in 2026 and help the planet at the same time? Sign up for the Lancaster County Beekeepers Society’s New Beekeeper Workshop. The workshop will be held on Saturday, Jan. 31, 2026, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at The Gathering Place, 6 Pine St., Mount Joy. Doors will open at 7:15 a.m.
“Beekeeping is a deeply rewarding hobby that has a meaningful impact on the environment,” said Kim Fairfield, secretary/communications director for the society. “For some, this can be a lucrative enterprise, but for most hobbyist beekeepers, the reward is in the calming, hands-on care for the bees that improves pollination in our communities, encourages stewardship of nature and promotes individual mindfulness. Of course, there’s also the sweet, golden reward of harvesting your own honey and beeswax!”
During the workshop, participants will receive all the essential information they need to begin beekeeping.
“We will cover topics that include the biology of bees, how to source your bees, how to set up and position your hives, caring for your bees, beekeeping equipment and costs, pest control, honey extraction and more,” Fairfield shared. “Attendees have the opportunity to speak one-on-one with seasoned beekeepers, win door prizes and enter (giveaways) to win hives and other equipment.”
The workshop fee will include lunch and all materials and take-home handouts, as well as

The program will also mark the farewell concert for QuintEssentially Brass, with the group retiring after the performance. The concert will feature carols arranged for brass,

The concert is free, but a freewill offering will be received to benefit the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. For more information, contact the church office at 717-397-5149.

QuintEssentially Brass will perform its final concert on Dec. 19.
Church to Host Blue Christmas Service

Lancaster Church of the Brethren, 1601 Sunset Ave., Lancaster, will host a Blue Christmas service on Thursday, Dec. 18, at 6:30 p.m. in the church’s chapel.
Led by the congregation’s pastors, the brief service will include readings, music, and candle lighting. The program will
provide a worship opportunity and a reminder of the coming of Christ for people who are having trouble embracing the festivities and joy of the Christmas season due to the loss of a loved one, financial difficulties, poor physical health, family discord, loneliness, or other troubles.
Oola Bowls Continues Franchise Growth

“I’m a Christian. I believe in God,” said Trimble, who works as a Realtor for Berkshire Hathaway in Lancaster. “Maybe that’s a part of it. I don’t think of it as ‘It’s not mine.’ I look at it as ‘I have it, and I want to give back.’”
Humble, unassuming and empathetic, Trimble has donated more than $250,000 of his earnings to Aaron’s Acres over the last 13 years. In addition, Trimble has participated in fundraisers in support of Aaron’s Acres, a nonprofit located at 1861 Charter Lane, Suite 114, Lancaster, that assists families with disabilities through recreational activities like summer camps.
“The work they do with the kids is fantastic,” said Trimble. “These kids have disabilities, and (Aaron’s Acres) runs summer camps. The kids are there, they’re playing and it’s heart-warming. They’re assisting the kids, but they’re also supporting the parents. Some of these parents never get a break. (Aaron’s Acres is) expanding their programs, and they’re giving something to kids and parents. I have friends who have kids with disabilities, so I see the other side of it. I know the money is being used wisely, I like that it’s a local organization and that it’s flowing to an end result.”
Trimble initially became better acquainted with Aaron’s Acres’mission through a fundraising golf outing in 2012. To help Aaron’s Acres, Trimble began pledging $100 donations to the organization for every home he sold, and then he padded those donation with even more of his funds.
At the beginning, Trimble’s intention wasn’t to donate a quarter of a million dollars to Aaron’s Acres; it just
sort of accumulated that way.
“If we had a good year, I’d donate a little more,” said Trimble. “Each year we’d donate money. Over the first few years, I really didn’t really pay too much attention to it. Then it kind of became, ‘Let’s see if we can do a little better than last year.’ It’s kind of evolved. We didn’t start with a specific goal.”
In his role as a Realtor, Trimble receives a lot of requests from local schools, churches and organizations to donate money or to support fundraisers. His contributions can also serve as business marketing or as a way to promote goodwill in the community.
“I’m successful, and I want to give back,” said Trimble. “My father always told me that society functions best when more are giving back than taking. This is my way to give back to society and Lancaster County.”
As time has passed and Trimble has evolved as a person, it might be that his priorities have changed right along with his perspective. Maybe he sees things in a different light now.
“There’s no doubt about that,” said Trimble. “When you’re younger, you have a few more bills. Now I have more breathing room, and I’ve become more generous.”
Aaron’s Acres was first founded in 1998 as a summer camp to provide recreational opportunities for families with disabled children. Since then, the organization has expanded its services and activities to include year-round programming and include young adults with disabilities.

individuals who have been victims of human trafficking, received a $15,000 grant for daily operations from B.J.’s Wholesale Club, which is headquartered in Marlborough, Mass., and operates a local location at 110 Centerville Road, Lancaster. The grant process, which was initiated by a local supporter and volunteer of NSI, took about four months to complete.
After B.J.’s Wholesale Club invited NSI to apply for the grant, NSI composed a formal grant proposal and submitted it, after which the request was granted.
“It’s a big part of our annual budget and a grant we haven’t gotten before,” said Clark. “To have a local tie to a national business is meaningful. I’d say that it’s larger than average. It’s a really big deal to us.”

“B.J.’s has a deep commitment to supporting families in the communities where we live and work,” said Kirk Saville, B.J.’s Wholesale Club’s head of corporate communications. “We are honored to continue supporting the organizations our team members care about most and to live our purpose of taking care of families who depend on us.”
With assistance and input from Clark, NSI development director April Miller wrote and composed the B.J.’s Wholesale Club grant application in about six hours.
To this point of 2025, NSI has applied for 13 total financial grants, five of which were approved and four of which were declined, while the status of the other four have yet to be determined. NSI is planning to apply for three more grants before the end of the year.
“April was primarily responsible for this B.J.’s Wholesale Club grant,” said Clark. “We want to make sure it’s a match. In B.J.’s case, we were recommended to them; they invited us to provide an extensive application of what the money would be used for. We had to be clear we were doing things that fit their purposes. By their bylaws, they have to make donations. We have to be a committed nonprofit doing good work in a
cause. We want human trafficking to end. If we can show we’re truly making a difference, we’re also providing an opportunity that grant makers are looking for.”
Grants represent about 10% of NSI’s annual operating budget. The largest source of NSI’s funding - about 50% - comes from the local community, including business donations, private donations and fundraising efforts.
Typically, the grants that NSI receives range between $3,000 and $50,000.
“There are so many grant-making entities,” said Clark, a resident of East Hempfield Township. “There are a lot of philanthropists who have some funds and are looking for specific causes. They have a heart to be generous to the causes that matter to them. It’s become competitive because there are so many nonprofits. There are always opportunities for generosity to causes that matter to you.”
“The grant programs are important to us, and they can come in chunks,” added Clark. “Grant funding is exciting, and it makes a difference, but a lot of grant makers don’t fund daily operations.”
With a focus on assisting survivors of human trafficking in Lancaster and Berks counties, NSI provides services like job training, an emergency shelter, restoration and continuing support of graduates. NSI employs 24 workers, seven on a full-time basis and 17 on a parttime basis, and benefits from the service of as many volunteers.

“A grant like this is really an expression of confidence,” said Clark. “This work is so crucial, and the way we do it is excellent. Anytime we receive a grant it’s affirmation. But everything we do is because of community funding. Most of our funding comes from local people. We exist because the whole community is behind us.”

membership in the Lancaster County Beekeepers Society (LCBS) for 2026.
“This membership gives access to our monthly meetings featuring professional speakers, a members-only monthly newsletter and swag store and monthly hive checks where we gather to examine the LCBS hives and ask questions from our experienced hosts,” Fairfield explained. “Members can also use the club’s 15-frame radial extractor at no fee, sign up to be on our swarm collectors list and have access to a certified kitchen to bottle salable honey for a nominal fee.”
The New Beekeeper Workshop has been a popular public offering of the society for many years, Fairfield said, noting that early registration is recommended since space is limited and the workshop typically sells out.
Lancaster County Beekeepers Society is a member organization, but the group also focuses on public awareness and services.
“One of the key ways we do this is by providing education for aspiring beekeepers in order to promote and endorse safe, responsible and ethical beekeeping practices that protect the community and the environment,” Fairfield said.
The upcoming year is an important one for the club.
“This year we are particularly excited to be celebrating our 150th anniversary, making us the oldest known beekeeping club in the United States,” she commented. “We have some special

celebrations planned for 2026, so it’s a great year to be a part of the organization.”
Community members can also support the efforts of the group by contacting the club to safely remove a swarm of bees or by sponsoring the society’s upcoming celebrations.
“If you aren’t quite ready to start your own hive, please consider joining LCBS,” Fairfield said. “You don’t have to be a beekeeper to be a member, and this is a great way to learn a lot about honey bees and beekeeping and gain hands-on experience with the club hives. You can also follow us on Facebook at ‘Lancaster County Beekeepers Society’ and Instagram at @LancasterBeekeepers for fun, educational content and to learn about our activities.”

Christmas Hymn Sing Set
Church of the Apostles United Church of Christ (UCC), 1850 Marietta Ave., Lancaster, will hold a Christmas hymn sing on Sunday, Dec. 21, at 3 p.m. in the church sanctuary.

a landmark 2025 growth year. The brand expanded its footprint to 22 open stores across five states, adding nine new locations in 2025 alone.
Founded in Lancaster in 2018 by friends Joe Ferderbar and Brock Snider, Oola Bowls has successfully scaled its operation, starting with 13 stores in Pennsylvania at the end of 2024 and adding nine more in 2025 across four new states, including Massachusetts, Maine, Florida and Georgia. The company will close 2025 with 22 open locations, five corporate and 17 franchises, and a pipeline of more than 75 units sold across the U.S.
The company’s momentum is anchored by new multi-unit agreements that officially introduce the brand to the western United States. This growth targets high-demand functional food markets across states such as Idaho, Colorado, Arizona and Ohio. Outside of the west, Oola Bowls has plans for more eastern expansion into Georgia, Florida and its home state of Pennsylvania.
Açaí has one of the highest pulp contents in the U.S., resulting in superior flavor and nutrient density. Bowls are topped with signature ingredients like Grandma’s Granola, an exclusive house-made recipe.
In addition to brickand-mortar expansion, the menu continues to develop and grow. In 2025, the brand launched its newest product, Oola Zero Açaí Bowls, with zero added sugar. Crafted for health-conscious consumers and performance-focused lifestyles, Oola Bowls’ Zero Açaí line delivers the antioxidant-rich, energizing power of traditional açaí without the sugar spike.
Oola Bowls expects to continue leveraging its franchise development pipeline to exceed more milestones in the coming year, driven by commitments from both new and existing operators.
