The house that Poppy built Staying smart about AI

Acorn

Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation announced on March 7 that Poppy, a rescued groundhog and animal ambassador for the organization, had passed away. Acorn Acres will host a memorial for Poppy on Saturday, April 1, at Jack’s Family Tavern & Restaurant, 15 S. Prince St., Millersville. The event will be held from noon to 4 p.m. and will include light refreshments, children’s activities, cornhole and a silent auction. Although the event will be free, Acorn Acres asks attendees to consider making a donation, which will fund the groundhog caging at its facility.

Upon receiving the news of Poppy’s passing, several members of the community reached out to Acorn Acres’ founder, Betsy Shenk, to ask her if she would host a memorial. Shenk had originally planned to hold a baby shower-like event on April 1 to collect supplies for the rehab, as most wild animals begin raising their offspring during this time of year.

April 1 would have been Poppy’s fourth birthday, so Shenk decided to transform the event into a way to honor her memory and to provide the community with a way to benefit the other groundhogs at Acorn Acres. With the money raised from donations, Acorn Acres will erect housing for its groundhogs with a

plaque that reads “The House That Poppy Built.” “It’s a way for us to remember her and to celebrate the incredible life of a little groundhog,” Shenk said. “This way, every little groundhog that goes through that house will benefit from Poppy.” Poppy came into Shenk’s care in May 2019, after she was found without a mother by a resident of Conestoga. The rehab that initially took Poppy in was having difficulty getting her to eat and transferred her to Shenk’s care, as Shenk specializes in rehabilitating rodents. Soon after, Shenk realized that the issue was caused by a malocclusion, a birth defect resulting in crooked teeth. Since groundhogs’ teeth grow perpetually and rely on the animal wearing them down, rodents with malocclusion that are unable to manage the length of their teeth are at risk of fatal health problems. Shenk only had three options: to euthanize Poppy, put her under anesthesia and trim her teeth every 10 days or remove her teeth altogether. Shenk decided to remove Poppy’s teeth and train her as an animal ambassador, as she was unable to be released back into the wild.

Since becoming an ambassador for Acorn Acres, Poppy achieved remarkable feats for a groundhog, including starring in an NFL championship commercial in 2020 alongside Bill Murray. Poppy accompanied Shenk to dozens of events and animal rehabilitation centers to help educate thousands of people on groundhogs and the important roles they play in the ecosystem. Shenk estimated that Poppy helped to educate nearly 12,000 people during her time as an ambassador.

“I think one of the biggest things she did was make people smile during a difficult time,” Shenk said. “I would see people looking at this beautiful little creature and smiling behind their masks. As much as this is going to tear our hearts out, I think the community needs this opportunity to grieve and celebrate her.”

The term artificial intelligence (AI) draws mixed reactions. Thanks to decades of science fiction films, television shows and books, many people hear the term AI and immediately begin to picture a bleak dystopia where robots have taken over the world, accompanied by the worry that Arnold Schwarzenegger won’t be able to save the day. Charlie Reisinger, chief information officer for Penn Manor School District, shared his perspective on the technological phenomenon to clear up some common misconceptions about AI.

“AI is just another chapter in humanity’s quest to create machines that mirror other humans,” Reisinger said. “There are age-old stories of human beings trying to create life, like the tales of Frankenstein’s monster and the Greek myth of Pygmalion. At its core, it’s trying to breathe some sort of life into technology, but AI is really just math and computer code, nothing more.”

The research of AI has been occurring for decades. The fundamental idea was to create software that could emulate human decision

making, but many research efforts were not fruitful enough and were abandoned. Around 10 years ago, a branch of AI exploration called neural network research resurfaced through the efforts of companies like Google. These companies realized this particular technique, roughly modeled after the human brain, could be used for pattern matching. Google made strides with functions like language processing, which gave us Google Translate. Reisinger credits this point in time as the beginning of a new generation of AI.

Join author Robert Dugoni for a talk

There’s an occupational hazard Mary Ann Steinhauer faces as the leader of the Council of Friends of Public Libraries. “People will stop me in the street and ask, ‘Are you having another author event?’” she said with a laugh. Thankfully for Steinhauer, the answer is “yes.” The Council of Friends will host awardwinning author Robert Dugoni on Thursday, April 13, at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. The event will begin at 11 a.m.

Dugoni is perhaps best known for his crime mysteries and legal thrillers. His Tracy Crosswhite police series has sold more than 8 million copies worldwide. Dugoni is also the author of the Charles Jenkins espionage series and the David Sloane legal thriller series. Additionally, he has written several stand-alone novels, including “The 7th Canon,” “Damage Control,” “The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell: A Novel” and “The World Played Chess.” Ticket holders for the April talk will receive a copy of Dugoni’s latest novel, “Her Deadly Game.”

Now, AI can be found in many applications that we utilize on a daily basis, such as Siri, Google Assistant and GPS. Reisinger said that the increased presence of these complex applications is due to a variety of factors, the decreasing cost of computers with higher processing power and the increase in storage capability being chief among them. “In the ’90s, the capability we have today was thought to be impossible,” Reisinger said. “It’s the confluence of all of these factors that makes AI a hot topic and allows it to make the strides that it has.”

Reisinger said that he sees a mountain of potential in AI. In his eyes, it’s a tool that can be used to enhance human skill and creativity; the main purpose of AI is to process

information that it is given and return a result that is meaningful to the user. Reisinger also noted that it isn’t a tool that is going away any time soon, so he believes people need to embrace it and help society to use AI in a

meaningful way.

This opinion doesn’t mean that Reisinger doesn’t have any concerns about AI technology. He notes that the most worrisome effects of using AI are human bias and ways that it will influence teaching and learning. “As humans, we have a terrible time reducing bias in our thinking. Human weaknesses can find their way into the code of these tools, and we need to build them in a way that they don’t mirror the worst parts of humanity,” Reisinger said. As chief information officer for Penn Manor School District, Reisinger also seeks to impress upon students and teachers that just because an AI algorithm provides you with an answer, it’s the user’s responsibility to fact check sources and to be discerning.

“Now is a time more than ever to rely on strong educational systems. It’s a new literacy,” Reisinger said. “The role of the teacher is dramatically more important now to help students navigate this new informational world.”

Bowlers, wrestlers place in PA championships

Penn Manor’s Lady Comet bowlers were the only LancasterLebanon League girls’ bowling team to compete in the PA State High School Bowling Championships at

Erie’s Eastway Lanes on Saturday, March 18. Unfortunately, Shikellamy once again stood in their way and the Comets settled for second place.

“It was the splitting image of our regionals loss to Shikellamy,” said

head coach Chris Vital, “only on a bigger stage.”

The Comets got off to a strong start, rolling an 808 in their first game. Kayla Wasche’s 243 topped the field and carried the Comets. Eva Brubaker was also solid with a 193.

The second game was even better, an 858. Lacey Slaymaker’s 185 led the way with Corinne Smith close behind at 180. They rounded things out with a 766. Wasche finished with a 182 and led the way with a 595 series. Brubaker (524), Slaymaker (465), and Smith (424) rounded out the three game series leaders. Abigail Nesmith chipped in with a 312 over two games and Hope Leaman added a 112.

“We were in third place after our second game, but the third game was brutal,” said Vital. “Corinne was struggling but I had her change balls and she got four strikes that really helped.

“Our baker sets were decent, and we settled for a 3477 average that left us well behind Shikellamy (3720) and 33 pins ahead of Freeport and 40 pins ahead of Kiski Area.”

The Comets got a bye in the quarterfinals and then topped Freeport in the semis, 203-200 and 143-123, setting up another championship match opposite Shikellamy.

“We took the first baker game 155-149 but then struggled in the second game, losing 234-150,” recalled Vital. “Now winner takes all and Shikellamy prevailed 185159. They’re a very good squad. Last year we finished third. This year we get second. Maybe next year we can win.

“Kayla’s 243 was the high game of the day and her 595 tied for the second highest series,” he added. “That left her as one of five bowlers to make the all-state team.”

On Friday, Brubaker competed in the singles portion of the tournament where, after six games, she settled for a 1172 qualifying total. “She was just ten pins from being top five and advancing to the stepladder finals,” noted Vital. “I definitely felt like she was one of the better bowlers there. She was in second place after her first two games (216 and 233). She threw a 156 in the fourth game, which dropped her to ninth but then she changed balls again and wound up throwing five strikes in a row and a 228. She finished with a 178 and was literally just ten pins away.

Penn

“She was, however, the highest Lancaster County bowler to finish,” Vital added. “One of the Township boys was seventh and an Ephrata boy was 15th.”

GIRLS’ WRESTLING

Three members of Penn Manor’s girls’ wrestling team qualified for the PA girls’ Championships held at Central Dauphin High School on Sunday, March 12. Two of them brought home medals.

Kaitlyn Clawson (100) finished in sixth place and Trinity Mowery, wrestling at 148 pounds, finished eighth. Anisa Orr (155) won her first-round match but lost a 10-9 decision in her final match and just

missed placing.

The girls qualified for states by placing in the top six at the central regional tournament held at Manheim Township High School on March 5. Clawson was third at regionals while Mowery and Orr both finished in second place. Slyvia Moenga was eighth and just missed qualifying for states. Clawson wrapped up her season with an 18-7 record. Mowery finished at 16-7 and Orr was 19-10.

The girls mostly competed in tournaments this year. They did have a few dual meets and finished the season with a 1-4 team record.

“We had 17 girls on the team this year, more than our first year,” said head coach Jason Fellenbaum. “We look forward to the continued growth of the sport locally and at the state level. With 103 teams in the state, we expect it should be a PIAA sanctioned sport next season.”

Also of note, assistant coach Scott Shenk received the PA Girls’ wrestling assistant Coach of the Year award.

ALL-STARS

This year’s wrestling all-stars included Gavin Boland and Travis Clawson as Section One first team all-stars, Riley Evans was voted to the second team and Josh Zook and Teagen Rogers were honorable mention selections.

On the girls’ basketball front, Paityn Smith was a defensive allstar, Izzy Kligge received academic all-star recognition and the Comets as a team received the Sportsmanship Award.

… And Bingo was his name-o:

Lori Breece, manager with United Disabilities Services (UDS) service dogs, remembers the successful bingo event the organization held in 2019. “At that time that was our largest fundraiser to date,” said Breece, who noted that the event garnered funds to help raise the 16 puppies that are trained yearly to become service dogs. The average cost of the first year of training one dog is $3,000.

The UDS bingo fundraiser will return to the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster, on Sunday, April 16. Doors will open at noon, and the first game will start at 1:30 p.m. Tickets, which are necessary to attend, will be discounted through

Friday, April 14. Each ticket includes 20 games. Players must be age 18 or older, and tickets are limited. Food and beverage items will be available for purchase.

Breece noted that the UDS fundraiser is a little different from some other bingo events. “We allow people to pick their own prizes, and I think that kind of sets us apart,” she said, noting that the option started years ago.

“So if somebody wins and they want that Kate Spade bag, they can get it,” she shared. “That has been well received.”

Breece, administrative assistant Jennifer King, and other staff members, have been gathering prizes for the event, focusing on experiences. Breece described a tast-

ing tour at Allegro Winery that includes cheese, crackers, a souvenir glass, and a free bottle of wine. “We have a 50minute traditional massage and lunch in the Oasis at the Spa at The Hotel Hershey,” said Breece. Another prize will be an experience for six at The Brewery of Hershey, which includes a guided tour of production operations and concludes with a tasting of products paired with local cheese, chocolates, and dried fruit.

Four tickets to Hershey Gardens will be among the prizes, and organizers are working on putting together an overnight trip to Baltimore with National Aquarium tickets. Breece also hopes to have a Gettysburg excursion to give away, and King noted that Longwood Gardens tickets and

sports memorabilia items associated with the 76ers, Flyers, Steelers, and Eagles are being gathered. Door prizes, special games with cash prizes, and other giveaways will be included at the event.

UDS service dogs are perhaps best known for helping individuals with mobility issues or autism. These dogs train for more than two years before they are partnered with an individual for whom they may open and close doors, retrieve objects, and more. Charlie, the black

Charlie, an unsponsored United Disabilities Services service dog pup, sits among bingo cards for the organization’s upcoming event to raise the money needed to help him through his first year of training.

Dugoni will be joined on stage by Scott LaMar of WITF, who will facilitate the conversation. A book signing and a meet-and-greet with the author will be held after the event.

“Robert Dugoni is a really great writer,” Steinhauer said. “I read ‘The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell’ in two days. I could not put it down.”

She noted that the Council of Friends has been offering author talks for 22 years, and the events always draw a crowd. “Typically, we have anywhere from 300 to 500 people that come,” she said, stating that the church makes a perfect venue. “Everybody will be able to hear and see what’s going on. There are two big screens and a great sound system.”

The Council of Friends of Public Libraries, founded in 2000, is made up of volunteers who are committed to promoting reading countywide. The author events are fundraisers for the public libraries in the county, and to date, the group has raised more than $140,000. Rock Lititz, PCA&D launch education center

Responding to the live event industry’s growth and its goal of next generation workforce development, Rock Lititz is adding an education center to its 108-acre campus.

Lancaster-based Pennsylvania College of Art & Design (PCA&D) and United Kingdom-based Academy of Live Technology (ALT) at Production Park, formerly Backstage Academy, have partnered to create the ALT at Rock Lititz.

The new ALT and the partnership among Rock Lititz, PCA&D and the ALT at Production Park was launched at the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival at the British Music Embassy on March 13 by Lee Brooks, CEO of Production Park; Rachel Nicholson from ALT; Andrea Shirk, president and CEO at Rock Lititz; and Carissa Massey, provost of PCA&D.

The partnership represents a global scale collaboration, melding the strengths and expertise of Rock Lititz, PCA&D and the British higher education provider, which has helped students to develop live production creative, technical and professional skills since its founding in 2011.

Construction has begun on the ALT at Rock Lititz facility, which adjoins the existing large-scale rehearsal spaces, Studio 1 and Studio 2. The structure includes 22,400 square feet of classrooms, production space, digital labs and a students’ common area, with the option of expanding to the second and third floors to meet future needs.

A fourth rehearsal studio is also included in the structure, which will accommodate artists who perform at clubs, theaters and small amphitheater venues, and will provide PCA&D students with handson experiences in production technologies. The 9,300square-foot Studio B includes 7,000 square feet of open space for rehearsals, product demonstrations and technical training sessions.

Students will attend their general education classes at PCA&D’s downtown Lancaster facilities, then receive their immersive technical education on the Rock Lititz campus, earning a four-year Bachelor of Fine Arts in live experience design and production.

Student recruitment has begun, and the Rock Lititz campus education center will be ready to welcome students for classes in the fall of 2024.
