Teacher Pens Book for Library Presentation

Adam Zurn quickly needed to find a book to discuss during an upcoming presentation at a local library.

So he wrote and published a nonfiction children’s paperback in three weeks.

“I think the saying is, ‘Necessity is the mother of all invention,’” Adam said, paraphrasing a quote often attributed to Plato.

Adam will talk about his debut book, “Canassatego and His Six Arrows,” on Thursday, July 24, at 10:30 a.m. at the Milanof-Schock Library, 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy.

“I’ve spoken there in the past for some adult events, and they asked me if I wanted to do a children’s program,” the Conestoga Township resident said. The title of the program series is “So You Want To Be A …” Adam’s answer is adventurer.

“That sounded like a lot of fun and would be neat,” he said.

Adam explained that the library

program includes show-and-tell, an activity, and reading a story. He will show the kids patio pavers he engraved with carvings

of petroglyphs, which will be an interactive experience for the attendees. “What I couldn’t find was a book that kept it in this

What gift do you buy for the person who has everything?

The Lancaster County Fossil and Mineral Club (LCFMC) has some ideas.

The nonprofit group’s annual Christmas in July Extravaganza will be held Saturday, July 26, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, July 27, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. There will be a charge for admission, and only cash will be accepted. Tickets purchased on July 26 will be valid for Sunday as well. Parking will be free. The venue is air-conditioned and handicapped-accessible. Food vendor Throwing Bull Tribe will sell items such as hamburgers, hot dogs, beef barbecue sandwiches, and ice cream. Part of the proceeds from food sales will be donated to the Pennsylvania Dutch Council Scouting America camps.

You don’t really know if you like something unless you try it. You don’t really know what something is like until you give it a chance.

Cadet Camp provides kids with an in-depth, hands-on glimpse into the professional

portion of a first responder’s lifestyle.

“We hope kids want to come out and learn about first responders,” said Kim Herskowitz, Cadet Camp’s coordinator. “It gives them an opportunity to get a little taste of it. It’s an opportunity to try some things they wouldn’t be

Sue Garrett, the LCFMC’s children’s education coordinator, noted that it will be a family-friendly event. People can add to their collections or buy presents for others by visiting the more than 90 vendor booths, where items including jewelry are made from minerals, fossils, and crystals.

“People can also have an educational experience by speaking with the vendors and also in our tour room for children,” Sue added.

On the days of the event, Sue will be a greeter at the Adventures in Geology Family Learning Center

Church Plans VBS

Willow Street Church, 2723 Willow Street Pike North, Willow Street, will hold a “True North” vacation Bible school (VBS) from Monday, July 21, to Friday, July 25, from 9 a.m. to noon. The VBS is open to all children from age 3 through middle school, and high school students may volunteer to help lead the program.

The “True North” theme will take children on an Alaskan adventure as they learn about how Jesus is a faithful friend who will always guide them. The VBS will include songs, Bible stories, memory verses, games, crafts, snacks, and hands-on learning in the Imagination Station.

Family and friends are invited to a special worship service on Sunday, July 27, at 9:30 a.m. The children will share the songs they learned at VBS, and a picnic will follow the service.

Registration will be open through Monday, July 21. To register, visit https:// bit.ly/WillowStreetChurch VBS or stop by the church’s welcome desk on Mondays through Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Fridays from 9 a.m. to noon. For more information, visit www.wsucc.com.

Women’s Club Installs

Officers

Members of the Millersville Woman’s Club installed officers for the 2025-26 club year. The officers are Karen Choppa, president; Julianne Reid, first vice president; Diane Duell, second vice president; Nancy Dornsife, corresponding secretary; Pam Smith, recording secretary; and Linda Davis, treasurer.

The installation luncheon was held on May 20 at Gordinier Hall, Millersville University. Hostesses were Linda Davis and Louise Brown. The installation was conducted by Carol Purzycki and Ora Bentz. In keeping with the theme of

able to try every day. Maybe we can get these kids to consider it as a career path. It’s about connecting with them while they’re young and seeing if they have an interest. It’s just kind of letting them know what’s out there.”

The fifth edition of Lafayette Fire Company’s annual Cadet Camp will be conducted over two days, from 4:30 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 1, and from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 2, at 63 Lafayette Way, Lancaster. Cadet Camp is designed for kids ages 8 to 14 who reside in Lancaster County.

There is a fee involved with registering for Cadet Camp, but there are also scholarships available to defray costs. To register, go to www.lafayettefire .com/cadetcamp before Tuesday, July 22.

“We respond to so many different kinds of calls,” said Herskowitz. “It’s not like a single service anymore. We’re constantly being relied on by the community, and things have only gotten busier. All these first responders make such an impact in

their communities. The public expects a lot of us, and we want to be ready.”

Cadet Camp teaches through a series of skills stations that participants rotate through - six on Friday night and 10 on Saturday. Each skills station is manned by multiple instructors, and this year campers will learn about hose lines, search techniques, campfire and home fire safety, equipment, cribbing and stabilization, communication and washing apparatus.

Cadet Camp, which is STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) based, also features an obstacle course, tours of first-responder apparatus, an awards ceremony, a demonstration of skills for parents and a cookout. Each camper will be outfitted with his or her own personal protective equipment.

“We get a lot of kids who have someone in their families who are first responders,” said Herskowitz. “It’s for anyone who has a general interest. We try to make it so broad that it’s interesting to everyone. It’s

for everyone interested in first responding.”

In addition to volunteer members of Lafayette Fire Company, officers from local police departments and medical personnel from local emergency service teams will be on hand to impart knowledge from their particular areas of expertise. It takes nearly 50 instructors to operate Cadet Camp.

“Some of the instruction is based more on the soft skills,” said Herskowitz. “They’re skills that can be applied to almost any job and skills that you can apply in school. They’re skills employers say they’re looking for.

(Participants are) gaining skills that are going to benefit them. We want to build those out and be able

to work as a team. We’re looking for kids who show leadership skills and who are able to interact with each other. They have to rely on each other just like we as emergency responders have to when we’re out on a call.”

Lafayette Fire Company, which was formed in 1943, is made up and maintained by the work of 80 volunteers - firefighters, drivers, helpers, support staff and administrative personnel. In 2024, the fire company responded to 615 service calls of varying natures.

“It’s hard these days,” said Herskowitz. “Volunteerism is definitely on the decline. People are being pulled in different directions. It takes a dedicated individual with a certain mindset.”

tour. “Some of the adults come and look inside,” she said. “I tell them, ‘You can go inside because you’re going to learn if you go in.’ They actually spend a lot of time in there. They love it.”

Kids receive a passport after entering the area. When they complete their passport by visiting all the exhibits, they are granted entry to the “mine,” where they can pick a few free specimens of minerals.

Sue said attendees will have the opportunity to pull fossil shark teeth out of sand and view a pyrite display and witches’ monkey gold.

Sue’s husband, Chuck, will give a demonstration on prepping a fossilized turtle the couple found in Nebraska. Club members will also provide free identifications of fossils and minerals.

Kyle Trostle from Snellius Minerals will present “Optical Mineralogy,” where participants will learn how minerals can be identified by the optical effects they make.

Participants will be invited to view and discover the different visual effects various minerals make while using a polariscope.

Ed Books, a retired fourth-grade teacher, will do demonstrations about fluorescent minerals throughout the show, and

participants will have the opportunity to learn why some minerals fluoresce. Books will also have small fluorescent mineral sampler boxes and small fossil sampler boxes available for purchase. “Sometimes a rock just looks like a rock, but when it’s under a black light it’s very colorful,” Sue explained.

Karen Hurd will demonstrate Colonial tinsmithing, giving a brief overview of the history, tools and materials used in the art. This will be an interactive exhibit where participants will be able to see minerals used in tinsmithing.

Davin and Foster Homing will display labeled examples of items they have found.

Chris Haefner is the president of the Lancaster County Fossil and Mineral Club, and his wife, Cathy, is the treasurer and show coordinator. The group’s membership has risen to more than 100 people. The club gets together the last Thursday of the month at 7 p.m. at Trinity Reformed United Church of Christ, 450 W. Main St., Mountville. In addition to the club meeting, educational speakers give presentations. The group also goes on field trips.

“It’s also nice to socialize,” Sue said. “Chuck and

I have made good friends with club members. It’s a nice group of people who have similar interests.”

Adam Zurn

Native American theme, a book for children that deals with local Indigenous groups,” said Adam. “So I was like, ‘You know what? I’m going to make one.’”

Adam’s 30-page book contains the true story of Canassatego, interspersed with what he calls “fun facts,” as well as artwork he made by enhancing paintings with Photoshop and artificial intelligence (AI). The tale had already been told on Adam’s website, https://uncharted lancaster.com, and he used Amazon’s self-publishing platform. The book can be purchased on the website and on Amazon by searching for “Adam Zurn” or “Canassatego and His Six Arrows.” He said the book is intended for kids ages 7 to 11 and has earned the endorsement of his wife, Maribeth, a firstgrade teacher at Conestoga Elementary.

his newspaper. There is also a nod to Canassatego on the $1 bill, Adam said. Originally from Susquehanna County, Adam came to the area to attend Millersville University and never left. He became intrigued by local history. “You just start asking questions,” he said. “And I think we often take our own local history for granted, but, you know, we go places to and ask those questions. And so I think that’s what happened to me. I came here and started asking questions.”

Adam was drawn to Canassatego’s story because it answered one of the questions he had been asking. “This happened in Lancaster and had an impact on the nation,” he said. “Going to places as a kid, I would always wonder, ‘Did anything happen in this town?’”

Adam began working on his second book eight months prior to beginning the first. It is a tale of ghosts and monsters in Lancaster County. “That’s like a 200-page book,” he said. “That’s a lot of work,

and I’ve been working on that for months. So this was a fun little side project to kind of take a break from that and put this together.” Adam recently completed his 23rd year as a teacher at Lampeter-Strasburg High School. He began his career as a woodshop instructor and now teaches computer science and video. Adam uses his free time over the summer to work on Uncharted Lancaster and give guided tours through what he calls “the tunnels of Enola” from Shenks Ferry to Safe Harbor.

“EVERYONE WELCOME”

140th Session of the RAWLINSVILLE CAMP MEETING 475 Clearfield Rd., Holtwood, PA 17532

Adam’s account of Canassatego takes place during the 1744 Treaty of Lancaster conference that started June 22 and ended on July 4. Adam said several hundred members of the Six Nations confederacy met in the courthouse located in Penn Square alongside representatives from Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia. One goal was to get the Iroquois to relinquish some land claims in Virginia and Maryland and encourage the tribe to stay neutral or support the English colonists during the imminent conflict with France.

On the last day of the conference, Canassatego, a well-respected tribe leader, gave a speech in the courthouse. Without giving away the major plot point that is the focus of the book, Canassatego shows that the colonists need to come together like the Iroquois have done. His demonstration was so stirring, it impressed Ben Franklin, who included it in
