here are plenty of options on how you could have spent this afternoon of July 4, and we are pleased and honored that you chose to spend it here at Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site,” said Jeff Jones, site manager, as he welcomed attendees to Hopewell’s annual Independence Day celebration, which featured patriotic music and the recitation of the Declaration of Independence. The event also included the reading of winning essays as part of a contest that invited local students to address the question, “What Is Your Pursuit of Happiness?”

Jones provided a bit of history about America’s war with Great Britain, which culminated in the writing of the Declaration, a document adopted by the Second

Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, that announced the 13 American Colonies were separating from Great Britain. “Many lives (were) lost before the words penned in Philadelphia became a reality,” Jones stated. “The colonists who took up

When rain forced the cancelation of its spring car show in May, the Draggin’ Wagons Car Club not only had to schedule a new date, but it also had a find a new venue.

The show will now be held on Sunday, July 27, from noon to 4 p.m. at the recently opened new location of Jerry’s Pizza Pie, 5004 Horseshoe Pike (Route 322).

“All our shows used to be on Sunday, so we went back to the Sunday show format,” explained club member Ray Marvin. “We used to have the car shows at the Kemper building behind Wimpy & Dee’s on the first Sunday in May (for the spring show) and the fourth Sunday in September (for the fall show). Kemper got too busy, and they needed the parking lot for equipment. We’re excited to still be in Honey Brook. It worked out.”

On the day of the car show, Jerry’s will not be open for business. However, there will be a food truck on hand at the car show and a sale of ice cream.

Hopewell from pg 1

the fight for independence had various reasons for doing so. We’ll soon collectively read the Declaration that includes an extensive list of reasons that they felt justified in separating from Great Britain.”

The highlight of the event was the reading of the winning essays. Jones thanked the Friends of Hopewell Furnace and Friends president Jim McClelland for their work in organizing the essay contest, as well as the judges. “I’m immensely grateful to our panel of judges - Jared Barndt of French Creek State Park, Sharon Brahmstadt from the Friends of Hopewell Furnace and Francine Fulton of the Community Courier,” said Jones. “They thoughtfully read and considered each submission.”

The high school winners were Brynn McKeown, Twin Valley High School (TVHS), first place; Luke Falcon, Spring-Ford Area High School, second place; and Charlotte Morrison, TVHS, third place. Middle school winners were Jasmine Moore, Twin Valley Middle School, first place; Juliet Shepherd, Governor Mifflin Middle School, second place; and Nityasree Sanka, March Creek Sixth Grade Center, third place.

In her essay, Brynn said that her pursuit of happiness began at a young age with an appreciation of the small things in life. “At 6, I filmed silly videos with my sister and captured little moments in my life,” she stated. “I played the Nintendo Wii for hours on end without a care in the world. I savored every bite of my food. I listened to Weezer and pretended to be cooler than I was.”

Her essay stated that this lesson of appreciating life’s small moments still applies today. “When I was 6, I didn’t need to find my happiness. I didn’t need to earn it by getting the highest grade on my essay or

scoring an A on my chemistry exam; it was just there,” she said. “I think that’s what I would like to return to: cherishing my everyday moments.”

In her first-place essay, Jasmine echoed Brynn’s feelings about finding happiness in life’s simple moments. “I enjoy pursuing my happiness as I cherish the small things that include exploring nature, listening to music, waving to my friends at school, eating, spending time with family or even just smiling at a stranger,” said Jasmine. “I am overcome with fulfillment while doing all of these things because I have learned to value small moments throughout my day-to-day life. When I pay attention to these little events on a daily basis, I am reminded that happiness doesn’t have to rely on major achievements or events, and it allows me to appreciate what I already have.”

After the essay readings, audience members volunteered to read the Declaration of Independence line by line using printouts of the document provided by Jones.

Also featured during the ceremony were the presentation of colors by Scout troop 597 and 595; a performance of the national anthem by Amanda Spotts; and the singing of “America” by Amelia Shelgren.

McClelland provided information about the Friends group, a nonprofit all-volunteer organization which has mission to support the interpretation, preservation and activities of Hopewell Furnace. Each of the essay contest winners was presented with a framed certificate and a cash prize provided by the Friends.

To read all of the essays in their entirety, visit www.nps.gov/hofu/index .htm and scroll down to “Independence Day Writing Challenge.”

Hopewell Furnace is located at 2 Mark Bird Lane, Elverson. The park’s facilities are currently open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission to the park is free. For more information, call 610-582-8773 or visit the previously mentioned website.

County Offers Farm Preservation Programs

Chester County offers programs to help farm owners preserve their farms.

The Chester County Agricultural Land Preservation Board is accepting applications for two programs funded by the Chester County commissioners: the Commonwealth/County Program and the Chester County Challenge Grant Program. To date, over 590 farms totaling more than 45,000 acres have been preserved in Chester County through these programs. Both programs offer funds to qualifying Chester County farm owners who are interested in preserving their farms. The county will pay farm owners for their development rights in exchange for a permanent agricultural conservation easement on their land. The owner will still own the land and can sell it or pass it on to the next generation, as long as it remains in agriculture.

Grant

apparatus, as well as replenish the spare inventory.

The high-quality hose produced by Mercedes Textiles will allow the HBFC to continue to provide a high level of fire suppression services to the communities it serves, including Honey Brook Borough, Honey Brook Township and parts of Salisbury and Caernarvon townships, for at least another decade.

The HBFC began the hose replacement project nearly one year ago, working in conjunction with Honey Brook Borough and Rep. Dan Williams.

“We had to apply for the grant, but they get a lot of applicants. Rep. Williams penned a letter of support fighting our case as to why we should receive the grant and the funding,” explained assistant fire chief Ryan Plank. “Today, with the rising costs of equipment and fire apparatus, it’s so expensive to operate a fire department that grants are becoming more and more sought after and becoming more competitive.”

Plank noted that the grant was specifically needed for the fire hose replacement project as directed by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), a nonprofit organization that develops and publishes codes and standards related to fire, electrical and building safety. “Fire hoses should be replaced every 10 years according to the NFPA. They control the standards that all fire departments adhere to,” noted Plank. “We were just over that by a year.”

“You can’t go to a store and buy (a fire hose),” Plank added. “It’s highly specialized, and there are safety requirements, and there are only a few manufacturers.”

Williams visited Station 33 on May 22 to meet with

the fire company officers and officials from Honey Brook Borough. He also took part in a tour of the station. “We wanted to give (Williams) a tour of the fire house, show off our equipment and capability and educate him on our operations,” said Plank. “We wanted to say thank you. It’s a big deal for us.”

“The support and hard work from Rep. Williams and his office, Honey Brook Borough Mayor Matthew Halvorsen and Honey Brook Borough Council president Bill Ford has been second to none,” said fire chief Gary Ream following the visit.

“Without their efforts, securing this instrumental funding on behalf of the HBFC would not have been possible.”

HBFC has provided 100% volunteer fire and rescue services since 1892, responding to more than 400 emergency calls annually. Plank pointed out that as the local community has grown, so has the need for services.

Over the last three years, the HBFC has experienced record numbers in call volume and now provides first-alarm coverage to a total of 15 municipalities in Chester and Lancaster counties.

The all-volunteer fire

company regularly holds fundraisers, including a consignment auction, an Amish wedding dinner and chicken barbecues.

“We have chicken barbecue fundraisers … but getting a grant of this magnitude is huge for the company,” said Plank. Those interested in financially supporting the fire company may make a donation at www.honey brookfire.org, or they may deliver a donation personally on Mondays between 7 and 10 p.m. when the fire company holds its weekly in-house training.

The fire company is also in need of volunteers.

“We are always looking for able-bodied folks that want to get involved and want to help,” Plank noted. “You don’t have to be in turnout gear fighting fires. We need administrative help, fire police officers that control traffic and drivers. It’s a great way to serve the community.”

Honey Brook Fire Company is located at 679 Firehouse Lane, Honey Brook. To learn more, visit the previously mentioned website or www.facebook .com/HoneyBrookFire . Those with questions may call 610-273-2688 or email info@honeybrookfire.org.
