SNM Remembers Its Past While Focusing on the Future

The Solanco Food Bank is celebrating its 35th birthday, and everyone is invited to an event being held in its honor.

Solanco Neighborhood Ministries (SNM), the nonprofit group that operates the food bank, will hold its fourth annual Do You Know Your Neighbor? summer fundraiser Wednesday, July 23, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Britain Hill Venue & Vineyard, 790 Little Britain Road North, Quarryville.

“People seem to really look forward to coming,” said SNM executive director Teresa Dolan. “It’s just a nice evening out, and you get to support a local organization at the same time. This year, we’re highlighting the food bank and its longevity. It’s really just to raise awareness about what we do and

the people in the communities that we serve. We’re going to share with the guests what we do as a food

bank and help them really understand the scope of things, because I think a lot of people don’t always

The Marquis de Lafayette was a 19-year-old Frenchman who volunteered to join the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War in 1777. He was able to secure France’s assistance in the war effort, which has been credited in the success of the Continental Army’s defeat of the British at the Battle of Yorktown in 1781.

In 1824, President James Monroe invited Lafayette to return to America, a trip that became known as Lafayette’s “Farewell Tour.” Planning to stay just three months, Lafayette extended his visit to 13 months because of the number of people who wanted to honor the Revolutionary War hero. During 1824 and 1825, Lafayette traveled more than 6,000 miles to all 24 states in the country, including Pennsylvania.

You don’t really know if you like something unless you try it. You don’t really know what something is like until you give it a chance.

Cadet Camp provides kids with an in-depth, hands-on glimpse into the professional portion of a first responder’s lifestyle.

“We hope kids want to come out and learn about first responders,” said Kim Herskowitz, Cadet

Camp’s coordinator. “It gives them an opportunity to get a little taste of it. It’s an opportunity to try some things they wouldn’t be able to try every day. Maybe we can get these kids to consider it as a career path. It’s about connecting with them while they’re young and seeing if they have an interest. It’s just kind of letting them know what’s out there.”

To commemorate the 200th anniversary of that visit, American Friends of Lafayette established a nationwide committee consisting of more than 500 individuals representing those 24 states that Lafayette visited. Events are being planned by communities to trace Lafayette’s footsteps on the exact dates and in the exact order he followed on his Farewell Tour of America.

Locally, a re-creation of his visit to Lancaster and Chester counties will take place on Sunday, July 27, through Tuesday, July 29. The event has been in the planning stages for the past four years. “Basically, I started

by researching exactly what Lafayette did when he came to this area. We took that as the framework and wanted to create historically accurate events based on what happened in 1825,” explained Kathleen Hood, Lancaster Lafayette200 Bicentennial coordinator. “I have been working with a

phenomenal planning committee. It’s exciting that it is all coming to fruition.” She added that she hopes the events will make Lancaster and Chester counties proud.

During the celebration, Ben Goldman, who hails from Washington, D.C., will portray Lafayette.

Events will begin on July 27 with Breakfast with Lafayette at the Historic Stottsville Inn. A fee will be charged for the event, which will include breakfast, period music, historic re-enactors and a ceremony.

Other events on July 27 will include a parade through Parkesburg (formerly known as Fountain Inn). Lafayette will travel by horse and carriage through the town, and he will also offer a short speech.

Other events on July 27 will include the following: a Lafayette Tea at historic White Chimneys, which will include period music and a display by the Salisbury Township Historical Society; a free ceremony and Troop Muster at Lafayette Fire Company and Lafayette Tower Park; a

stop at Franklin & Marshall College; and a Bicentennial Candlelight Dinner and Period Ball at the historic Trust46 building. Tickets will be required for the dinner.

On July 28, Lafayette Day at Historic Rock Ford will take place, featuring a Lafayette exhibit, Revolutionary War encampment, crafts, speakers, music, food and dancing.

An Evening with Lafayette Musical Performance will take place at the Ware Center on July 28. The free event will feature performances by Allegro Orchestra; Gospel Choir; MFE Community Chorus; Central York Fife & Drum Corps; and James Wolpert of Lancaster, who appeared on the TV show “The Voice.”

The Lafayette200 Closing Ceremony and Grand Sendoff at Historic Drumore Estate will conclude the events on July 29. A fee will be charged for the event, which will include a French-inspired brunch.

Other featured activities during the three-day celebration will include a Lafayette200 Lafayette in Lancaster exhibit, Lafay -

ette200 Walking History Tours, Lafayette Day at the Lancaster Stormers, Marquis Monday author webinars, Lafayette educational resources, a preview reception at the Sehner-Ellicott von Hess Building and the release of a special edition commemorative book titled “Marquis de Lafayette Visits Lancaster.” For more information, including specific locations and start times, and to register for events, visit www.lafayette200pa.org. KBA Students Will Live and Learn Their Faith

Founding a school is a huge, complicated undertaking that requires in-depth planning and critical thinking, and it’s not without risk. For Kingdom Builders Academy (KBA), it is truly a leap of faith.

“It’s a larger undertaking because we’re starting from the ground up,” said KBA principal Kelly Burrows. “It takes a lot finances, a lot of people, and it takes a vision. The risk is you build all this, and are people going to come? Are people going to trust you because you’re a new school?”

KBA’s plans for opening at the start of 202526 school year are well involved. KBA, a nondenominational, faith-based school, will provide educational opportunities for children in kindergarten through eighth grade, with the school year beginning Tuesday, Aug. 26.

KBA is affiliated with Church of the Word International, which meets at 2124 Old Philadelphia

Pike, Lancaster. KBA will be housed in six rooms in a current building also located on Old Philadelphia Pike.

KBA, which is registered with the state as a private school related to a religious organization, is required to meet educational standards established by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Depending upon its levels of success, KBA is also considering plans to extend educational offerings to students in grades nine through 12 in the future.

“We are creating lifelong learners,” said Burrows. “We are raising (students) up to fulfill whatever it is God has called them to do. We want to provide opportunities for children to learn truth. Our school is going to have more paren tal involvement. It gives us a chance to partner with parents.”

eight to 10 teachers, aides and staff members for the upcoming school year. About six or seven families with school-age children from the Conestoga Valley, Warwick, Ephrata, Hempfield and Easter Lancaster County school districts, some of whom attend

Church of the Word, have expressed interest in KBA.

KBA will operate under a hybrid educational model where students will attend classes in person on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and attend classes virtually on Mondays and Fridays.

After receiving Pennsylvania Department of Education approval in April, KBA is in the process of hiring a staff of about

Presentation on Women in the Civil War Set

The Solanco Historical Society will hold a program on Saturday, July 19, at 1:30 p.m. at its archives building, 1932 Robert Fulton Highway (Route 222), Quarryville. Dominish Miller will present “Women at War: The Female Soldiers of the American Civil War and Those That Wished They Were.”

She will discuss how, contrary to popular belief, women did fight in the American Civil War. They also infiltrated the United States Army in earlier wars. Deborah Sampson served for 17 months in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War as Robert Shurtliff, and Lucy Brewer served with the Marines aboard Old Ironsides as George Baker during the War of 1812. Modern historians are shedding light on the role that female soldiers played in the Civil War and the women

who made a living off of lying about their military service.

Miller is a local historian and co-founder of the Hometown History Podcast. She is the Third Circuit Court of Appeals librarian for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, the founder of Preserving the History of Newberrytown, runs the Lewisberry Area History Lovers group, and is a founding board member of the Newberrytown special events committee. She serves as librarian and VIS chair for the Harrisburg chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Miller is also a re-enactor with the 87th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, Company C, where she portrays a private. She is the author of two cookbooks and a local history book.

BBBS of South-Central PA received the award on June 12 at the BBBSA National Conference. The award was given in recognition of the agency’s 2024 accomplishments, including serving 1,320 youths, the greatest number served in a single year across the past two decades; the acquisition of a neighboring affiliate, increasing the agency’s service area from five to seven counties; development of

the region’s only Youth Leadership Summit; and quality of program services.

Cadet Camp

be conducted over two days, from 4:30 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 1, and from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 2, at 63 Lafayette Way, Lancaster. Cadet Camp is designed for kids ages 8 to 14 who reside in Lancaster County.

There is a fee involved with registering for Cadet Camp, but there are also scholarships available to defray costs. To register, go to www.lafayettefire.com/ cadetcamp before Tuesday, July 22.

“We respond to so many different kinds of calls,” said Herskowitz. “It’s not like a single service anymore. We’re constantly being relied on by the community, and things have only gotten busier. All these first responders make such an impact in their communities. The public expects a lot of us, and we want to be ready.”

Cadet Camp teaches through a series of skills stations that participants rotate through - six on Friday night and 10 on Saturday. Each skills station is manned by multiple instructors, and this year campers will learn about hose lines, search techniques, campfire and home fire safety, equipment, cribbing and stabilization, communication and washing apparatus.

Cadet Camp, which is STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) based, also features an obstacle course, tours of first-responder apparatus, an awards ceremony, a demonstration of skills for parents and a cookout. Each camper will be outfitted with his or her own personal protective equipment.

“We get a lot of kids

&

who have someone in their families who are first responders,” said Herskowitz. “It’s for anyone who has a general interest. We try to make it so broad that it’s interesting to everyone. It’s for everyone interested in first responding.”

In addition to volunteer members of Lafayette Fire Company, officers from local police departments and medical personnel from local emergency service teams will be on hand to impart knowledge from their particular areas of expertise. It takes nearly 50 instructors to operate Cadet Camp.

“Some of the instruction is based more on the soft skills,” said Herskowitz. “They’re skills that can be applied to almost any job and skills that you can apply in school. They’re skills employers say they’re looking for. (Participants are) gaining skills that are going to benefit them. We want to build those out and be able to work as a team. We’re looking for kids who show leadership skills and who are able to interact with each other. They have to rely on each other just like we as emergency responders have to when we’re out on a call.”

Lafayette Fire Company, which was formed in 1943, is made up and maintained by the work of 80 volunteers - firefighters, drivers, helpers, support staff and administrative personnel. In 2024, the fire company responded to 615 service calls of varying natures.

“It’s hard these days,” said Herskowitz. “Volunteerism is definitely on the decline. People are being pulled in different directions. It takes a dedicated individual with a certain mindset.”

CASA Receives Grant

CASA of Lancaster and Lebanon Counties was awarded a $10,000 Impact Grant from the United Way of Lebanon County for the second year in a row.

PHEAA Announces Scholarship

The Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) encourages 2025-26 college students, graduate students, and their parents to enter to win a $2,500 no-essay scholarship sweepstakes through the PA Forward Student Loan Program.

Anyone who opts in to receive communications, which will include tips on planning for and paying for

college, between June 5 and Monday, Dec. 15, will be entered into the scholarship sweepstakes. A total of 12 winners will be selected in August and in December this year, prior to each semester.

The PA Forward Scholarship Sweepstakes is open to Pennsylvania residents only. To enter, visit www.pheaa.org/ss.

Instructors will oversee grading and the development of lesson plans, and parents will be encouraged to take hands-on roles in their children’s education.

“Some of them are people who have expressed interest in faith-based education,” said Burrows, a resident of East Hempfield Township. “Some (of the families) are from church. Some are friends of friends.

Jennifer Walters at 888-786-7331 or waltersj@quarryville.com to schedule

Some are just finding about it online. Some have said they are looking for a model like this. Some have said they’ve been praying for a church school to open up.”

“We kind of want to be a reflection of the church,” added Burrows. “(The school’s opening) has also spread through word of mouth. It’s starting to catch on now that we exist. We want to get our name into the community a little more.”

KBA will be funded mainly through tuition, but the school will also apply for educational grants.

“This year will be a building year while looking to expand to high school in years to come,” said Burrows. “We’re hoping to be fully established by year three or four. ... We’ll be conducting yearly school evaluations, which will help us determine where we’re at.”

Families seeking private education in Lancaster County are afforded a

wealth of learning options.

“I do think we have to distinguish ourselves,” said Burrows, noting that the hybrid aspect is one way of doing that. “I think parents want to be involved in their children’s educations, but they’re not required to come up with the curriculum.”

“This is something the Lord has put on my heart,” continued Burrows. “I

really believe it’s the right timing for the school to exist. This is a place for growing and encouraging kids to be builders of the Kingdom of God. That’s how we’re going to speak to our kids and look at them.

The school is going to be like a family.”

understand the amount of food that goes and the number of people that we help and what our vision looks like moving forward.”

The event is free. Dolan said preregistration is helpful, but walk-ins will be welcome. To register, go to https://solanco neighborhoodministries .org and click on the Events tab. Those interested in participating in the silent auction will receive a bid number. Items up for bid will include a Traeger grill, gift certificates to local restaurants; photography sessions; wine baskets; soapand candle-making classes; facials, manicures, and pedicures; and some experience gifts such as local tours.

Food trucks On the Roll and The TacoRV will have items for sale.

Dolan noted that SNM will have staff members and volunteers stationed around the room to answer questions, explain the displays that will be on-site, and inform visitors how they can volunteer.

“People will be able to come in and really just visually see more of what we do in just kind of fun and creative ways,” she said.

Dolan stated that the need for SNM’s services have steadily increased.

“Our student weekend meals program consistently increases in the number of students participating every year,” she said. “We’re filling more and more emergency orders and holiday meals. We’re expanding our food services to really meet the gaps that we see are in our area.”

This time of year can be particularly challenging.

“Spring and summer are generally a slower time for food donations,” said Dolan. “I think it’s just an important time to raise awareness. I think a lot of people think of giving around the holidays. But the spring and summer are equally busy at the ministry. And so food donations and donations in general are just as important at these other times of the year as they are in the fall.”

It’s not just the food bank that requires attention.

“(Issues) don’t stop once the warm weather comes and it’s bright days and blue skies,” said Dolan. “If anything, we see more evictions, more homelessness in the spring and summer

because people will get evicted in the warmer weather as opposed to putting somebody out in the cold. So there are more homeless and people sleeping outside and sleeping in their cars in the spring and summer. And then food needs increase when the kids are home from school.

… We just need a lot of cyclical trends depending on the seasons, bringing different challenges for different people, depending on what types of jobs they have and whether they have child care.”

Visitors to the summer fundraiser will have an opportunity to learn how SNM plans to handle the community’s needs.

“People can come and learn more about our vision for the future,” Dolan said.

“Our strategic plan has five focus areas: housing, food security, educational programming, transportation, and community awareness and sustainability. So if people would like to come and learn more about any of those particular focus areas, if they have a particular interest in helping with any of those, they’d be able to come that night and learn more about that.”

Make It With Wool Contest Announced

The 2025 Pennsylvania Make It With Wool Contest will take place on Saturday, Oct. 4, in the PA Preferred Banquet Hall at the Farm Show Complex, 2300 N. Cameron St., Harrisburg. Youths and adults who sew, knit, or crochet garments with wool or other animal fibers may participate. The categories will be preteens, for those ages 8 to 12; juniors, ages 13 to 16; seniors, ages 17 to 24; adults, age 25 and older; and made for others, for which the model and contestant may be any age. Ages are as of Jan. 1. Expert judges will handle the garments and meet with the contestants. Judg-

ing will be based on the following criteria: appropriate to contestant’s lifestyle; fit and overall appearance; coordination of fabric or yarn with garment style and design; contestant’s presentation; construction quality; creativity in design and use of wool; and conveys or promotes the beauty, comfort, and versatility of wool. All fabrics or yarns used in the body of the garment must be 60% or more animal fiber. Interfacings, linings, and trims do not need to be wool.

The Pennsylvania Sheep and Wool Growers Association and other donors will provide the funding for prizes for the winners in each

category. The winners in the junior and senior categories will be eligible to compete at the National Make It With Wool Contest in Reno, Nev., in January 2026.

The goals of the contest are to promote the beauty and versatility of wool fabrics and yarns; to encourage personal creativity in sewing, knitting, crocheting, spinning, and weaving with wool fabrics and yarns; to recognize creative skills; to help participants develop life skills, including being responsible for oneself, being a good sport, and accepting judges’ decisions; and learning about and appreciating diversity.

There is a registration fee, plus a testing fee per fabric or yarn used. Participants must register no later than Tuesday, Sept. 2. All who register will receive a piece of wool yardage. To register, visit www.make itwithwool.com.

Three national contests are also available for anyone to enter. These are mail-in contests; contestants will not compete in Harrisburg on Oct. 4. They are a sweater contest, a recycle/upcycle contest, and a producer-to-crafter contest.
