Deb Frantz, president of the Manheim Township Historical Society (MTHS), is especially looking forward to the Halloween costume party fundraiser the organization will hold this year because of the live music that will be part of the event. “We will have a band, and they are so much fun,” said Frantz, referring to 3rd Power “Family Soul,” which has been lined up for this year’s event. “(Band members) interact with people (who attend). There is dancing music, and it’s something everybody would like,” Frantz noted. 3rd Power “Family Soul” is known for playing a variety of musical genres ranging from jazz to rock ’n’roll and soul music. The band members, who are originally from New York, now make their homes in Lancaster, and they offer a unique musical chemistry for listeners.

Considered one of Lancaster’s premier dance bands, the group is known for its interactive style and wide appeal. The fourth annual Halloween costume party will be held on Saturday, Oct. 27, from 6 to 10 p.m. The event will be held in the fully decorated barn at Stoner Commons, 650 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster, which donated its facility for the event. Tickets will include heavy appetizers and beverages. There will be a costume contest and other competitions, and a number of prizes will be given away. Among the many prizes organizers have gathered are home décor items, including a decorative elephant done in fall colors, pillows, wreaths, and wooden signs. A snow angel, a photo holder, and a number of gift cards from local businesses will also be among the prizes. Frantz pointed out a tuxedo set including cufflinks and a money clip valued at $1,800, which was donated by an area See Costume Fundraiser pg 5

“We try to live out the parable of the Good Samaritan. We recognize people … who are hurting and suffering in our communities. We meet them where they’re at, and we respond with generosity and compassion,” said Nate Hoffer, chief executive officer of Good Samaritan Services. Good Samaritan, with locations in Ephrata, Lancaster, Coatesville, and Phoenixville, was founded as the Good Samaritan Shelter in 2002 when several Phoenixville-area churches joined forces to help area residents who were struggling, especially with housing. The Ephrata location provides an 8,000square-foot homeless shelter to as many as 35 women and children per day. The Phoenixville shelter for single men can also house 35.

For Jeremy Leaman, founder and director of Ten Million for Christ, who grew up on a farm south of Strasburg, the invitation to lead a Youth Evangelism Service (YES) team to Romania as part of Eastern Mennonite Missions became a lifechanging opportunity. “From the spring of 1993 to the summer of 1994, (our team) worked with churches there,” said Jeremy, whose team started a Christian student movement and a church during the 15-month outreach. “I fell in love with the people, the culture, the language, the food, and the beauty of the countryside.” In the fall of 2000, Jeremy returned to Romania, and he fell in love again. “That’s when I fell in
