Lancaster HUB of Stonecroft Ministries will benefit from a one-day bus trip to New York City on Saturday, May 18.

26th Friendship Fest And Third 5K Run Planned

According to Friendship Community volunteer coordinator Phil Horning, the atmosphere at the organization’s annual Friendship Fest, Auction, and 5K Run is … well, festive. “It’s a lot of fun,” said Horning. “It attracts children and families, and the individuals we support love coming (to the event).” Laurel Spagnolo, director of advancement with Friendship, added that organizers enjoy seeing residents from nearby Landis Homes visiting the fest.

Friendship Community, a ministry that helps individuals with developmental disabilities to impact the world with their capabilities, will hold its 2019 Fest, Auction, and 5K, rain or shine, on Saturday, May 11, beginning at 7 a.m. at Friendship Community, 1149 E. Oregon Road, Lititz. The day will open with a cafeteria-style pancake

and sausage breakfast and a plant sale.

Two years ago, the organization added a 5K run/walk to the annual event. Registration for this year’s 5K is now open at www.friendshipcommunity .net, or individuals may pick up brochures at the Friendship office. Registration will be discounted through Friday, May 10, and registration will open at 7 a.m. on the day of the run, with the run beginning at 8 a.m. Registrants will receive a goodie bag and a T-shirt while supplies are available.

Horning noted that those who sign up for the 5K will have the opportunity to set up their own web page and to request sponsorships from friends and family members if they wish. Runners will be entitled to a free breakfast at the fest.

After Cristin Germaine held the third Dare to Dream Single Moms’ Day Out in 2018, she felt a change was in order. “By the end of 2018, I was talking with trusted friends about where to go with Dare to Dream,” recalled Germaine, who felt the Lord pushing her to expand the audience for the next event.

“This will be a brand-new venture,” said Germaine of the free re-envisioned event that will be held on Saturday, June 22, at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The day will be called “Dream BIG!: Ignite Your Passion,” and it will be open to men and teenagers age 15 and up in addition to women. The Friendship Heart Gallery will have a tent filled with artwork available for purchase. The gallery showcases work through which individuals with intellectual disabilities express themselves artistically. Friendship’s Meaningful Day Academy program, which offers Friendship clients an opportunity to contribute to the community, will also have a tent at the fest. Both tents will be open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

hot dogs, french fries, and ice cream.

As part of the fest, Friendship began offering a fund-a-need program a few years ago. This year, the fund-a-need roster includes concrete walkway repairs, washing machines, flooring, electrical work, shed repair, office chairs, laptop computers, and refrigerators. One need that Spagnolo called attention to was funds to provide summer camping experiences at area camps for Friendship clients.

Individuals may donate to the fund at the Friendship website.

Donations of items for the auction are still being accepted, and volunteers are always needed. Volunteers may sign up through a link on the website.

Through its many group homes and intermediate care facilities, as well as home-based services and programs, Friendship provides services to more than 230 area individuals. Organizers hope this year’s fest will raise $75,000 for the cause. Readers with questions may call 717-656-2466.

inflatables, began with one simple concept empathy. “All second-grade (students) work on an empathy project,” explained teacher Laurie Fellenbaum.

Students in Fellenbaum’s class began doing extra chores for their parents and others around Thanksgiving. The funds they received for the work totaled a few hundred dollars for Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, a nationally recognized nonprofit organization that provides physical, occupational, and speech-language therapies, as well as educational recreational programs, to children living with congenital and acquired disabilities and developmental delays. Next, Fellenbaum’s class worked with Christopher Burrowes’ class to hold a Schreiber-THON, where students sought sponsors and then exercised for a full hour.

The effort raised more than $3,600 for Schreiber.

On Saturday, May 11, the students will hold the Kids Helping Kids Family Fun Fair in Stauffer Park, 1241 Lititz Pike, Lancaster, from 2 to 6 p.m. Admission will be free and open to the public. Funds will be raised by fees associated with specific fair activities.

Among the many activities planned for the event will be an inflatable two-person obstacle course with a slide. For a special price, attendees may slide as many times as they want during fair hours. Pony rides will also be available at a per-ride fee, and a free craft table will be available for children to enjoy. Area businesses have donated candy bars for a spin-to-win game, and a Manheim Township School District art teacher and an artistically gifted Schaeffer Elementary sixthgrade student will provide face painting

services. A temporary tattoo station will be on-site, and a local hair cuttery will provide braiding and coloring. A Lancaster radio station will broadcast from the park, and official Manheim Township vehicles, including a police car and fire truck, will be on hand. Other visitors will include two sister princesses associated with ice and snow, as well as Cylo from the Lancaster Barnstormers.

Food will be sold from three trucks, including one serving savory items, another serving soft pretzels, and a third selling ice cream.

Prizes and giveaways, which will be announced at the end of the Fellenbaum Fun Fair at Schaeffer Elementary on Monday, June 3, will include more than 40 prizes the students gathered from area businesses.

Among the many prizes will be gift baskets, a tool set, many restaurant gift cards, gym classes and gym time, a health club membership for a family of four, tickets to a local Christian theater, and gift cards from a local shoe store.

To round up the prizes, students were required to write at least three letters to area businesses. According to Fellenbaum, each student learned how to visit a local establishment, ask for a manager, look that person in the eye, shake his or her hand, and explain the project.

Fellenbaum noted that attendees to the fair may pay for rides or tickets with cash or checks written directly to the Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development. Master Gardeners Slate Plant Sale The plant sale sponsored by Penn State Master Gardeners of Lancaster County will be held on Saturday, May 4, from 8 a.m. until sold out at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster.

This year, items for sale will include “plants of merit” selected by the Philadelphia Horticultural Society, Mt. Cuba, Penn State Flower Trials, Perennial Plant Association and Ohio State. Another feature this year will be planting designs and prepacked groups of plants for mailbox, pollinator, and container gardens.

The sale will also include numerous varieties of native plants, plants for sun, plants for shade, pollinators, perennials, and annuals. As in years past, there will also be hundreds of plants grown by Master Gardeners. Selected tomato and

pepper varieties grown from seed by Master Gardeners will be available as well.

The Garden Shed will feature gently used garden tools, containers, and accessories. Although the plant sale will open its doors at 8 a.m., the Garden Shed will open at 7:30 a.m.

Soil test kits and an information desk where people may ask garden questions will also be part of the event.

Payment with cash and checks is preferred, but credit card payments will be accepted. Presented by Penn State Master Gardeners of Lancaster County, the sale supports the group’s many programs offered to the community, including a Garden Hotline, demonstration gardens, and youth garden programs.

Chorale Plans Spring Concerts The Heritage Chorale of Lancaster has announced its Spring Concert Series. The program, “Rise Up, My Love, My Fair One,” will be presented on Sunday, May 5, at 4 p.m. at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, 308 Petersburg Road, Lititz, and on Sunday, May 19, at 4 p.m. at Holy Spirit Lutheran Church, 3131 Columbia Ave., Lancaster.

The concert’s title piece is composer Healey Willan’s interpretation of a poem from the Song of Solomon. In addition to this piece, the chorale will present a grouping of songs of joy and longing, representing a variety of eras and choral traditions.

Founded in 1994, the Heritage Chorale of Lancaster is a group of approximately 50 singers dedicated to excellence in the choral art form. With a repertoire spanning the 16th through 21st centuries, the chorale has performed at Colonial Williamsburg, Longwood Gardens, the Washington National Cathedral, and churches and historical institutions throughout the Lancaster County area. The group is led by Barry L. Sawyer, artistic director, with Anne L. Lefever as accompanist.

Soccer Camp from pg 1 The Manheim Township boys’ soccer team will hold a youth camp for both boys and girls ages 5 to 11 on Monday to Thursday, June 17 to 20, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Camps will be held at the turf fields at Manheim Township High School (MTHS), 115 Blue Streak Blvd., Lancaster.

Staff from the MTHS boys’ soccer team will lead the camp, and players from the varsity and JV boys’ teams will assist them. Campers will participate in games and drills with a focus on game fundamentals such as dribbling, ball control, shooting, and passing. There will also be some giveaways for campers.

Author To Share Her Story Sandra Uwiringiyimana, author of “How Dare the Sun Rise: Memoirs of a War Child,” will give a free presentation at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 7, at Lancaster Country Day School, 725 Hamilton Road, Lancaster. The event is free, but tickets are required.

Uwiringiyimana tells the story of her life as a girl in The Democratic Republic of the Congo, where she survived a massacre, immigrated to America, and overcame her trauma through art and activism.

Since her family’s resettlement in 2007, Uwiringiyimana has called for justice for the

Gatumba massacre and has become a voice for women and girls, refugees and immigrants, and forgotten people like the Banyamulenge Tribe. Uwiringiyimana is co-founder and director of partnerships and communications at Jimbere Fund, an organization that aims to revitalize distressed communities in Congo by investing in women. She is also finishing her studies in New York City.

wrote a song called “Dream BIG!” that is based on Germaine’s life story. In September 2018, Germaine traveled to Nashville to record the vocals. Grammy winner Jonathan Crone oversaw the recording of the song, which Germaine coproduced with Copeland.

A launch party will be held for the song on Monday, May 13, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Landis Hall at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim. Admission is free.

“God is doing amazing things,” said Germaine. “I always wanted to sing. An important part of Dream BIG! will be the workshops, which Germaine noted are specifically geared toward helping people move forward. “One couple (will hold a) workshop on embracing brokenness,” noted Germaine. “(That’s about breaking) free (from) our past to dream again.”

Truck Convoy from pg 1 The 30th annual Mother’s Day Truck Convoy will take place on Sunday, May 12, at Burle Business Park, 1000 New Holland Ave., Lancaster. The Convoy Carnival will take place on the Burle Business Park property from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and the trucks will leave promptly at 1:30 p.m. The Convoy will end at about 4:30 p.m. This year’s goal is to raise $550,000 for Make-A-Wish.

Organizers expect to host approximately 600 drivers with trucks and trailers at the Truck Convoy, as well as an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 community members at the Convoy Carnival. The Convoy itself is a 26-mile scenic route through Amish Country, where 25,000 members of the community line the route to cheer on the drivers and the 125 Wish recipients who ride with them.

This year, the final vehicle will be the Wish Family Bus, transporting family members of Wish recipients who are deceased.

The first truck will tow the Wish Angel Trailer, which features stars emblazoned with names of Wish children who are deceased.

A Working Truck Beauty Contest is being held online, and the winners of each of the four categories will be featured at the Convoy. To vote, readers may visit https://1.shortstack.com/nJPNlD. The Convoy Carnival, open to children and adults of all ages, will feature a wide array of local food, games, dozens of costumed characters, live music and a live auction. The Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy began in 1990 when a child, Matt, was granted his wish to ride in an 18-wheeler and talk to his sister via CB radio. On the day of Matt’s Wish, more than 40 trucks were in the Convoy. Since then, the event has grown each year. In 2003, 2004, and 2016, the Convoy set the Guinness World Record for the world’s longest truck convoy.

The Lancaster British Brass Band will perform. Under the direction of Dr. Stephen Arthur Allen, this group of 25 brass instrumentalists and three percussionists has a sound that has been compared to that of a pipe organ.

Allen came to prominence in the United Kingdom as one of the finest euphonium players of his generation. An associate professor of music at Rider University, Allen is also a visiting professor of euphonium at Rutgers University in New Jersey. In 2004, Allen founded the Princeton Brass Band, of

which he is musical director; the group is the ensemble-in-residence at Rider University.

For concert programs, brass bands borrow from a variety of musical genres. A typical program consists of transcriptions of the classics, marches, hymns, popular music arrangements, solos and original compositions written for the medium.

Programs are selected for a balanced presentation that attempts to please a wide range of tastes and interests.

BOYS’ LACROSSE In the game always anticipated by lacrosse fans in the L-L League, the Blue Streaks held on for a 12-10 defeat of arch rival Hempfield on the road Thursday.

The Streaks led by as many as six goals early in the third quarter, but the home team came back to make it a one-goal game in the fourth quarter. The Streaks prevailed as Tre Freeman scored four times, equaling Sean Curcio’s total. Tyler Kurtz notched a hat trick as the Streaks improved to 9-0 in the league play, (13-1 overall).

Hempfield, which had lost by a wider margin early in April, fell to 7-2 (11-2).

Township goalies Owen Hirsch and Tyler Moritzen recorded five and three saves, respectively.

The big showdown was sandwiched between a 16-4 trouncing of league rival Cedar Crest and a 16-2 Saturday loss to District One foe Malvern Prep at the Wyomissing Tournament.

In Tuesday’s win at home, Freeman poured in six goals while John Grandrimo scored three goals and dished out three assists. Curcio led the team in assists with five.

Nurses Invited To Report For Honor Guard Duty After Joni Sweigart, MSN, CRNP, saw a post on social media about a nurse honor guard, she reached out to a friend she had made early in her career, Jean de Groot Banzhof, MSN, RN, and suggested they form a similar group. Banzhof replied, “Let’s try.�

That was earlier this year. The two have co-founded the Lancaster County Nurse Honor Guard (LCNHG) by setting a tentative framework in place. Before making anything final, however, they would like to have the input of current or retired nurses - registered (RN) or licensed practical (LPN) - in good standing. Sweigart and Banzhof will host an organizational meeting at Lyndon City Line Diner, 1370 Manheim Pike, Lancaster, at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, May 6. “Incidentally, that happens to be Nurses’ Day,� Banzhof pointed out.

During the meeting, Banzhof will give a presentation about the purpose of the guard and how it will be utilized, as well as what she and Sweigart have come up with to carry

out its function. “We have some thoughts, but we’re open to input from more people,� Sweigart remarked.

Banzhof and Sweigart have patterned the LCNHG off a similar organization in Michigan. They noted that the guard in that state is active and a good resource for guards in other states.

The idea behind the LCNHG is that just as nurses served within a community during life, they should be honored by their colleagues at their death. Based on what they have seen other guards do, Sweigart and Banzhof have created a short ritual of remembrance that may be used at funerals or memorial services. They imagine a group of three or four LCNHG members wearing white uniforms and red-lined blue capes conducting a tribute that will include the reading of a poem, the chiming of a bell to signal the release from duty, and the presentation of a white rose. Once finalized, information about the tribute and the LCNHG will be distributed to all the funeral directors in

Lancaster County.

The services can be individualized depending on the deceased’s family’s wishes. The LCNHG will help families create tables of remembrance to represent late nurses’ careers.

To be successful, the LCNHG will need a commitment from several dozen people.

Individuals will need to be able to cover morning, afternoon, or evening services on weekdays and weekends.

There will be no cost for the tribute service. “We are recognizing the sacrifice the family made by the person being a nurse,�

Sweigart said.

The women noted that with the numerous retirement homes and the presence of several nursing schools, the population of current or former nurses in Lancaster County is quite high. Thus, they believe it makes sense to form an honor guard. Thankfully, interest in the guard has been relatively high, with just over 30 people having indicated that they plan to attend the meeting. Weidner currently teaches ceramics and sculpture to high school students at Lancaster Country Day School. She maintains a home studio where she experiments with printmaking, stained glass and watercolor painting. Those who are unable to attend the meeting but are interested in the guard may send an email to request ongoing updates on the organization.

The organizers anticipate meeting again in two months, with hope to have the guard up and running by the beginning of September.

There will be costs associated with the guard. Members must provide their own white uniform, but the LCNHG will purchase capes that will be shared among the members, as well as flowers, chimes, and lanterns for the displays. Sponsorships are available to cover the guard’s costs, which will eventually include the fee to apply for nonprofit status. To learn more, folks may send an email to the aforementioned address.

St. Paul’s Evangelical Congregational Church, 2120 Main St., Rothsville, invites the public to its next healing service, set for Wednesday, May 8, at 7 p.m. These services are conducted three times annually, and people seeking prayer for physical, spiritual, or emotional wholeness are invited.

Directed by the Rev. Kenneth Miller, the service will follow a liturgy drawn from several sources. The focus will be upon Scripture and prayer, along with Communion.

Attendees are invited to receive anointing with oil.

Conestoga Herb Guild To Meet The Conestoga Herb Guild will hold a meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 8, at the Upper Leacock Township War Memorial Building, 54 W. Main St., Leola.

Several guild members will present a program titled “Garden Hacks,” featuring shortcuts designed to help people with gardening. The annual plant and seed exchange for members and guests will also be held.

The Wolf Museum of Music and Art, 423 W. Chestnut St., Lancaster, will present its annual memorial recital honoring William A. Wolf on Sunday, May 5, at 3 p.m. Piano music by Verdi, Chopin, and other composers will be presented.
