Evolve Life Group plans expansion to Lancaster
BY CAT SHANNON
When Joe Bachman formed Evolve Life Group in 2023, he hoped to bring together adults age 45 and older who were interested in making friends and serving their community. Now the organization, which began in the Eastern York region, is expanding to the Lancaster County side of the river.
Evolve Life Group will hold an open house/ organizational meeting on Thursday, May 22, at the Marietta Community House, 264 W. Market St. It will begin at 6:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be provided.
and community service.
The group meets regularly for meals out at local restaurants, to serve other organizations and for special events.

“Evolve East York campus was introduced with eight people and now has grown to over 80 regular members,” Bachman said. “We felt like the opportunity to have another campus just seemed natural for people in western Lancaster County to have the same opportunity as those in eastern York.”
At the open house, people will learn more about the organization and its three core values: support ourselves, support each other
“Over the last year and a half, our group has enjoyed getting to know one another through activities such as dinners, potluck meals, ‘70s/’80s trivia, the Evolve Amazing Race and community service projects,” Bachman shared. “Our ultimate goal is just to continue connecting the community together and enjoy life together!”
Most importantly, he noted, Evolve helps people connect with others.
“This group allows people to develop relationships,” he said. “The fun
thing so far is there’s a lot of people that have mentioned that they haven’t seen some people in a long time, and it gives them a way to reconnect. Many have started new relationships that never would have happened if not for this group.”
And while it’s billed as being for people age 45 and up, that’s really an arbitrary number, he said. It’s more about the mindset.
“We’re just looking for people that are interested in a life group and are on the same or similar parts of their journey,” he explained.
purpose is that we live up to our core values,” he stated.
“There are no geographic limitations to those. We will expand to other areas as we feel like there is an interest and that we can build a foundation of members to support it.”
He also noted that while the group has three core values, it abides by one “belief value” - it’s a faithbased group with Jesus as the foundation.
Bachman has big plans for the group. He noted that many organizations such as Boy Scouts started small, but then grew into national movements. He envisions the same for Evolve.
“We feel like Evolve can travel anywhere. The purpose for the group is not just to have numbers. The
“He is our trunk, so to speak,” Bachman said, referencing John 15:5. “We feel like He is our foundation, and we are the branches to reach out to ourselves knowing that we need help. We are the branches to each other to help each other through life. We are the branches to our community to those in need.”

River Discovery boat tours planned
Susquehanna National Heritage Area (SNHA) will offer one-hour River Discovery boat tours on Thursdays to Sundays from June through September. SNHA will welcome guests aboard the Chief Uncas, a historic electric-powered boat, for tours on the Lake Clarke reach of the Susquehanna River. Tours will embark from the dock at SNHA’s Zimmerman Center for Heritage, 1706 Long Level Road, Wrightsville.
On the tours, guides will share stories of the Susquehanna River’s history and heritage. Up to 22 passengers may participate in each outing. In addition, themed boat tours will be offered throughout the tour season,
highlighting stories of the river’s Civil War, Native American, and haunted heritage.
There is a fee, with discounts for youths age 17 and under and for seniors. To purchase tickets, visit https:// susqnha.org/programs/ boat-tours/.
The Chief Uncas was built in 1912 for Adolphus Busch, who used it for cruises at his summer estate on Otsego Lake in Cooperstown, N.Y., the headwaters of the Susquehanna River. SNHA purchased the Chief Uncas in 2021. To learn more about the history of the boat, visit https:// susqnha.org/wp-content/ uploads/2024/02/Chief -Uncas-Brochure-2-24.pdf.

cornhole tournaments.
There is a fee to participate in the golf event and cornhole tournament, but everyone is invited to visit the vendors and food trucks and buy tickets for a chance to win prizes.
Food trucks will be on-site selling barbecue sandwiches, hamburgers, hot dogs, french fries, ice cream, and coffee. Event founder David Chobanoff said he is expecting at least 30 vendors that will sell a variety of items.
Proceeds will be split between Penn State Health Children’s Hospital and the Hudsen Memorial Ride in the first event since Putting
for Miracles became a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, David said.
The Hudsen Memorial Ride is a motorcycle ride in remembrance of Hudsen Wolfe, who passed away on Sept. 5, 2017, at the age of 8 after a battle with diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG), an aggressive brain cancer that primarily affects children.
At the suggestion of his friend Ben Tolson, David first became involved by raising money for the Children’s Miracle Network’s (CMN) Extra Life program, where people generate funds by gaming for 24-hour periods.
Three years ago, David and his wife, Stacy, were selected to represent Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center at a conference in Orlando, where he met Travis Miller. Miller had become both rich and famous after monetizing a social media site called PGA (Professional Golfers Association) Memes, which makes fun of professional golfers, and began holding golf tournaments around the country to raise money for CMN.
Miller spoke about “The Power of One,” and that message resonated with David. “I got goosebumps while he was talking,” David said. “I thought, ‘That’s me in my living room (playing video
games to raise money).’”
David introduced himself to Miller, and Miller told David about Play Yellow, a CMN program endorsed by iconic golfer Jack Nicklaus and his wife, Barbara, and the PGA Tour.
In August 2022, three months after that meeting, David and Stacy held a trial event, which raised more than $5,000. The following May, the Chobanoffs held the first official Putting for Miracles event, which generated $10,000, and last year’s edition collected more than $11,000 despite rain.
He remembers a radio station broadcasting stories of kids who had benefited from CMN. David, who lives in Marietta, is both moved and motivated by the personal stories he’s heard firsthand.
When he was 5 years old, Gavin Gilhool fell out of a second-story window while roughhousing with his brothers and recovered with support from CMN. Gilhool
attends the Putting for Miracles events and met David last year. “I told Gavin that his story inspired us,” David said.
A child of David’s friend Jen Gulbrandsen was also a Miracle child.
“I’ve been doing this for a decade, and now some of the kids are graduating college,” David said. “People come up to me and say, ‘You helped me when I was a child.’ I still get a little humbled when I hear thank yous from the family.”
Thaddeus Stevens College receives donation
Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology recently accepted a gift of more than $104,000 to its foundation from Mid Atlantic Machinery and its partners. The funds will provide scholarships to students in the college’s Metals Fabrication & Welding Technology associate degree program, creating pathways to high-demand careers in many industries.
Mid Atlantic Machinery, a machine tool and fabrication equipment distributor based in Lower Paxton Township, Dauphin County, has been a supporter of Thaddeus Stevens College. The company has been a longtime partner, demonstrating support through regularly hiring program graduates as well as its philanthropy.

The company has hired graduates not only from the college’s metals

charity, is a three-person operation. Longtime friends Matthew Millhouse, IronLeg’s president, and vice president Sean Laukhuff founded the organization in 2021. Secretary/ treasurer Ashley Kimmich joined in 2024.
The group’s mission is to help purchase high-level prosthetics for people from ages 1 through 18. “We help cover what insurance does not,” said Matthew, who lives in New Danville. “We help kids get better prosthetics while they’re young instead of after they’re done growing.”
Iron-Leg has generated a total of approximately $60,000 in the first three tournaments. The proceeds from this year’s golf outing will benefit a 7-year-old girl from Massachusetts named Abby. Abby, who will be at the event, was injured in
a lawn mowing accident when she was 3.
The cause is especially meaningful for Matthew, whose son, Parker, was born without a right leg. Parker, 12, is doing well and playing baseball this spring.
Matthew decided he wanted to assist families who are in a similar situation, and Sean eagerly agreed to help. Sean, who resides in Reading, is following his uncle’s lead: Ken Laukhuff answered a mother’s call for help when her son’s last wish was to talk from one truck to another on a CB radio. That charitable act was the genesis for what is now known as the Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Convoy.
Kimmich, from Millersville, was friends with Sean and gladly stepped in to help with the Iron-Leg Corp. after her kids graduated from high school. “I
was always involved with booster clubs and love helping kids with sports,” she said. “What (Sean and Matthew) do is really touching. For kids who want to run or play a sport, they need better prosthetics, and it’s sad if a (child) can’t play a sport because their parents can’t afford it. So I decided to join their team.”
Iron-Leg Corp is grateful for its sponsors, including Lancaster Nissan, Yale Electric, Aerotek, Lynch Financial LLC, The Exterior Company (TEC), Skywalker Electric, and Dent Techs.
A trademark of Iron-Leg events is a huge American flag. “We’re a lot of fun. Anybody can say that, but we go the extra mile,” Matthew said. Matthew served in the United States Marine Corps Reserve from 1995 to 2001.
In 2019, he enlisted in the Air Force National Guard and continues to serve his country. Sean was in the United States Army from 1993 to 2005.
The trio shows no signs of slowing down. Iron-Leg held its first football game last fall, and another is planned for 2026. The Iron-Leg dance is also slated to return next year.
“We know this is the rest of our lives,” Matthew said.
