Rescued Canine Now Offers Comfort To Others By Francine Fulton

A year and a half ago, Rose, a Labradoodle, was struck by a car and left on the side of the road. Today, thanks to the efforts of several good Samaritans and Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue, Rose has a new life bringing comfort to others as a certified therapy dog. Although Rose has completely recovered from the accident, she lost one of her legs, which the veterinarians were unable to save due to nerve damage. However, according to her owner, Jackie Gallagher, being a tripod has not affected Rose’s spirit. “We all knew after meeting her for the first time that she would be a therapy dog sometime in the future,” Gallagher said. “She is happy 24/7. Garden from pg 1

Churches from pg 1 starts on Ash Wednesday and lasts for 40 days, not including Sundays, representing the 40 days Jesus spent fasting in the wilderness before His crucifixion. The 40-day period for Christians is a time to reflect, fast and give penance in preparation for the resurrection of Christ, which is celebrated on Easter Sunday, which falls on April 12 this year. The following services have been scheduled. The Rev. Rick Knarr will lead the service at Mount Carmel United Methodist Church (UMC), 2203 Harmonyville Road, Elverson, on March 4. The service on March 11 at Calvary Christian Center, 426 Laurelwood Road, Pottstown, will be led by the Rev. Keith Price. On March 18, the Rev. John Kolle will lead the service at Nantmeal UMC, 359 Nantmeal Road, Glenmoore. The service on March 25 at Temple UMC, 1390 Unionville Road, Pottstown, will be led by the Rev. Mark Muthler.

On April 1, the Rev. Jim Jannotti will lead the service at Coventry Church of the Brethren, 946 Keen Road, Pottstown. On Good Friday, April 10, the service will be held at Harmonyville Church of the Brethren, 2037 Harmonyville Road, Pottstown, and will be led by the Rev. Cindy McKinley. The Coventry/Warwick Ministerium promotes Christian fellowship, resources and programs for church leaders to minister to the local townships. Annual events for the community include a Thanksgiving Eve worship service and the Lenten services. Monetary donations collected at these services are used to fund local food banks and to help with mission trips and projects. Meetings for clergy and church representatives are held at 8 p.m. on the third Tuesday of month from September through June at Mount Carmel UMC. For more information, readers may contact Robin McKinley at Calvary Christian Center at 610-323-0480.

The 2019 growing season was the first for the Sprouts for Peace Garden at New Holland Mennonite Church, 18 Western Ave., New Holland. According to Dawn Ranck-Hower, pastor at the church, the produce from the garden was used first in lunches for students of the Early Learning Center (ELC), which is housed in the church. Produce was also given to ELC families for their use and distributed through the CrossNet Food Pantry. “The experience … was very positive,” said Ray Hurst, who continues to lead the project. After retiring in 2019, Hurst looked at the amount of land the church owned and suggested increasing the size of the garden. He pointed out an area behind the church that he felt would be suitable and added a system to collect water from the church roof that can be run to the area for irrigation. Adding the second plot has effectively doubled the size of the garden, giving the organizers about three-quarters of an acre of land on which to plant. Ranck-Hower explained that

expanding the garden fit into the mission of New Holland Mennonite. “We have a strong ethic here at the church in that we believe what we have should be used,” she said. “That’s in the DNA of this church. We have all this land. (Why) are we just mowing it when it could be used to produce food?” Based on the soil, water availability, and space, Hurst has carefully planned what to plant in which garden. The garden near the front of the church will be planted with red beets, onions, cauliflower, broccoli, and lettuces. “Out back will be corn and tomatoes and the spacious things that take up a lot of room,” said Hurst. Green beans and potatoes will be included, and butternut and spaghetti squash may find their way into the gardens as well. With the expansion of the garden, Hurst and Ranck-Hower are looking to grow the number of volunteers who are involved. “There are people in this community who need fresh veggies, and New Holland Mennonite has lots of land,” said Ranck-Hower. “We need additional gardeners to help with the planting and

harvesting. I think there are people in the community who would love to help if they knew about the need.” To plant, weed, water, and harvest, Hurst and Ranck-Hower estimate a need for at least 20 more volunteers than they had last year. Hurst noted that certain vegetables, such as beans and snap peas, are labor intensive to harvest. “It’s two or three days a week,” he noted. Those who wish to volunteer need only send the church their email address to be added to a volunteer list. “So, if Ray says we need eight people to pick beans on Tuesday evening, the volunteers can go in and sign up, and then we know how many people are coming,” explained RanckHower. Individuals who are interested may email the church at nhmc@frontiernet.net or call 717-354-0602. Ranck-Hower is hoping to have the opportunity to introduce some of the less-common vegetables to ELC families. “Spaghetti squash you can use as spaghetti, and (children) love it,” she noted. “It’s almost a spaghetti casserole.” Ranck-Hower hopes to prepare dishes and give samples to the

Life Transforming Ministries (LTM) has announced that free tax preparation assistance will be available at its six locations through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. The offices are located in Coatesville, Downingtown, Exton, Phoenixville, Pottstown and West Chester. Each site offers various day, evening and/or weekend times. VITA is a program of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and is offered across the United States in thousands of sites each year. The VITA program, which just celebrated its 50th anniversary, is embraced by a broad range of philanthropic and financial service providers like the United Way and Vanguard. Individuals and families who need help filing but who cannot afford to pay a preparer are encouraged to use VITA’s free services. IRS-certified volunteers will seek to ensure that families are educated on frequently missed credits they may be eligible for, like the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Child Tax Credit. These credits and deductions may reduce a taxpayer’s liabilities and increase his or her refund. All returns are electronically prepared and filed at no cost to the taxpayer. LTM’s policy is to maximize the number of eligible taxpayers who receive the EITC, a credit for those who earn low to moderate incomes up to approximately $60,000, but the organization’s goal is to offer services to anyone who needs help. Volunteers at all of LTM’s sites are capable of preparing tax returns that include wages, interest income, dividends, state tax refunds, unemployment benefits, IRS distributions, pension income, Social Security benefits, simple capital gains/losses, sale of a home, self-employed income, gambling winnings, cancellation of debt, Health Savings Accounts, itemized deductions with limitations, education credits, the Child Tax Credit and other dependent credits, the EITC, ACA statements, the prior year and Form 8615 for tax on certain children’s unearned income. When visiting the sites, people will need photo identification for the first and secondary taxpayers and Social Security cards for everyone on the return, including all dependents. Upon arrival, taxpayers will be asked to complete an IRS Intake/Interview and Quality Review Sheet. Those who wish to complete this form prior to arriving may log on to www.ChesterCountyFreeTaxes.org and click Intake Form under For Tax Filers. Days and hours of operation for each site are available by visiting the

aforementioned website or by calling 610-380-9099. Since 2004, Life Transforming Ministries, headquartered in Coatesville, has partnered with the IRS to operate sites in Chester County, and LTM recently opened a new site in Montgomery County. LTM began with a few volunteers preparing 15 returns in 2004, and last year more than 100 volunteers prepared 1,877 free returns, which generated refunds worth millions of dollars. was found by a girl that saved her life - her first angel,” Gallagher said. “She was laying in a cornfield off Route 10 in Cochranville,” explained Lucky Dawg board member Sharon Gilsky. “A person who was driving down Route 10 saw her. They stopped and took her to a groomer, and someone who worked in the groomer’s office - Christen Pulaski - took her home. She contacted Lucky Dawg to see if we could help in any way. She called us, and we went to her house to see. At that time, (Rose) wasn’t putting any weight on her leg, and she had some scrapes, bumps and bruises.” On Sept. 6, 2018, Rose was taken in by Gallagher as a foster at the request of Gilsky and Mary Bauer, founder of Lucky Dawg. Every attempt was made to contact Rose’s owner, but no one came forward. “We fostered her for about a month before she had the amputation,” Gallagher explained. “I started training her in March of 2019. We went through Level I, Level II and Canine Good Citizen. It took nine months before we completed the schooling that she needed. In December 2019, we took the Therapy Dog International Test.” Gallagher noted that Lucky Dawg helped finance

the cost of the classes. Gallagher eventually went from fostering Rose to adopting her. Together, the pair now visit patients at Chester County Hospital and the Coatesville Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center, as well as residents of Freedom Village at Brandywine, a senior living community. They also listen to young readers at Coatesville Public Library as part of the Tail Waggin Tutors program. Their next library visits will be on Saturdays, March 7 and April 18, beginning at 10:30 a.m. In April, Gallagher will bring Rose to visit with children at the Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Delaware. Gilsky noted that children at duPont who may be facing surgery or the loss of a limb may be comforted by visiting with Rose. “(They will see that) this dog who has had an amputation is the happiest and best dog ever,” she said. Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue is a nonprofit, no-kill, all-volunteer organization. For more information about the rescue, including how to foster, volunteer or adopt, readers may email LuckyDawgAR@gmail.com, visit www.luckydawganimalrescue.com or search for “Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue” on Facebook.

SALT Performing Arts and Acting Antics will present “The Lion King KIDS” on March 6 through 8 at the SALT theater in Chester Springs. The play features a cast and crew with all abilities. A show that combines the talents of a cast and crew with all abilities will be featured when SALT Performing Arts and Acting Antics present “The Lion King KIDS” on Friday, March 6, through Sunday, March 8, at the SALT theater, located in the West Pikeland Township Building, 1645 Art School Road, Chester Springs. The show is part of ENCORE, a weekend of performances from the Acting Antics Musical Theatre Master Class produced by SALT Performing Arts. SALT merged with Acting Antics in November 2018. In March 2019, the two groups presented “The Granny Awards,” which was the first show staged after the merger. Acting Antics was founded in January 2007 by Cindy Schneider as a way to provide unique opportunities for children, teenagers and adults who have difficulty with social skills or have a diagnosis on the autism spectrum. Prior to the merger, Acting Antics was searching for a performance space. “Last year’s production of ‘The Granny Awards’ was truly one of the most rewarding moments in the life of SALT,” said Lauren McComas, SALT’s founder, artistic director and president. “I can’t tell you the amount of joy we felt seeing that cast of beautiful people feeling comfortable and confident in who they are on our stage.” “The merging of our two organizations could not have gone any smoother,” Schneider added. “Last year, Acting Antics needed See SALT pg 9

Students at West Fallowfield Christian School (WFCS) will present the family favorite musical “The Lion King Jr.” on Friday, March 13, at 1 and 7 p.m. and on Saturday, March 14, at 7 p.m. The junior version of the musical is shortened to about an hour and tailored to younger performers, but it retains the same charm and drama of the original. There will be an intermission, with concessions available, making the total time about 90 minutes. “It’s a shorter version. Some of the harder songs are pulled out (and) solo pieces are pulled out to make it kid-friendly,” explained WFCS music teacher Ellen Miller. “The most popular songs you loved from ‘The Lion King’ are in there.” There are some sad moments in the story, but the show is still appropriate for young members of the audience. “We do a good job of portraying those as well as enjoying the fun moments,” director Elizabeth Eckman said. The musical is a bigger project than the school has undertaken before. “We did smaller musicals in the past few years. This is the first year we could tackle a big production,” Miller shared. “We knew the roles would be filled and done amazingly well.” The cast members are students from all grades at WFCS. “There’s a crazy amount of talent in this school,” Eckman said. “I feel like the musical is a vehicle to grow confidence in these kids,

the parents.” Larger and more centrally located than the previous site, located at 645 E. Baltimore Pike, the new location has more than 2,500 square feet of space for the medical, educational and emotional support services. The first floor holds parenting classrooms, a waiting area, a play area for children, a small kitchenette, administrative space and the Parenting Boutique. In the boutique, clients can use points earned for coming to class to get the necessities for their families, such as diapers, wipes, formula, clothing, high chairs, car seats, cribs, personal hygiene items and more. The second floor of the building includes a medical room with an ultrasound machine, a peer counseling/ coaching room, an administrative office and a prayer room. The new building has been remodeled, but for the open house, the rooms were mostly empty. The

organization is asking for the community to help outfit the building. Just days before the grand opening, an anonymous donor pledged to match all gifts dollar-for-dollar up to $23,000 through Sunday, March 15, to help fund the $46,000 renovation budget. “As we celebrate our 35th anniversary this year, we are so humbled and thankful for this new space,” stated Ruager. “We invite everyone in the community to stop by to see the space for themselves. We would love

to give you a personal tour and share more about our services and how you can get involved.” “We are looking for volunteers,” Maloney added. “We are most in need of nurses but also administrative help, event planning help, different skilled tradesman - whatever your gift is, we’ll find a way to connect it into the ministry.” CCWS also has offices at 1028 E. Lincoln Highway in Coatesville and at 139 W. Market St. in West Chester. For more information readers may call 610-383-0930 or visit www.ccwsmedical.org.

Last year, the organization logged more than 3,900 appointments throughout Chester County. Medical services include pregnancy testing, limited ultrasounds, prenatal vitamins and more. Educational visits offer information on abortion alternatives, adoption guidance and parenting. “Our numbers solidified the need to move, with class participation having increased from 386 education appointments in 2017 to 958 education appointments in 2019,” said CCWS executive director Myriam Ruager citing statistics for the previous Kennett Square office. “That is when the Family Cornerstone Foundation learned of our need and stepped up in a big way. They purchased this new building and are leasing the space to us at a very modest cost. We are extremely grateful.” “It’s much brighter. Our previous location was more on the outskirts of town, so this is more centrally located,” CCWS development director Michelle Maloney said. “The other difference is just the amount of room that we have here. We had outgrown our site so much, in fact, we were having to meet elsewhere. (Clients) often come in with their children as well. Now we can have space for the children as well as

Silver Poms Cheerleading Squad Formed The Heritage Hotties, a silver poms cheerleading squad, held its debut performance on Feb. 24, featuring 13 members of the squad performing a routine set to the Bobby Day classic “Rocking’ Robin.” The short performance was followed by a screening of the movie “Poms” and a sundae bar. The group is made up of residents of The Heritage of Green Hills, a

healthy life plan community in Shillington. The squad formed after a group of residents saw the movie “Poms” and decided to start a team of their own. Resident Carol Lauer’s granddaughter Elizabeth Lavanga, a former Berks Catholic High School varsity cheer captain and a pre-med student at Penn State, offered to help organize a team

over her break as a community service project. Lavanga also put together choreography designed to be beneficial for seniors. Taking into consideration The Heritage’s model of health and wellness through activity and fun, she planned movements intended to help with balance, stretching, memory, and endurance. Each Friday, members of the squad suit up in matching “Cheer

by your own rules” T-shirts to practice, move, and laugh together. The team is open to all residents, including those who prefer to cheer from a seated position. Enthusiasm is the only requirement. Some members of the group have cheerleading experience from high school and college, while others are completely new the sport. Litter Cleanup Results Posted During the fall 2019 Pick Up Pennsylvania initiative, supporting the International Coastal Cleanup, Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful worked with local groups and organizations to mobilize 12,610 volunteers who coordinated 382 events across Pennsylvania. Organized groups, civic organizations, families, and friends canvassed their communities to remove 488,135 pounds of trash and tires from Pennsylvania’s watersheds and waterways, preventing litter and trash from making its way downstream and eventually ending up in the ocean. Litter reaches the ocean by way of storm drains and waterways. When it rains, litter on sidewalks and streets accumulates and is swept into storm drains. The recent Pennsylvania Litter Research Study by Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, in partnership with the Pennsylvania Departments of Environmental Protection and Transportation, identified more than 500 million pieces of litter along Pennsylvania roadways. The most common items identified were cigarette butts (37%) and plastics (30%), with plastic film and beverage containers most prevalent. All documents

and related material, including fact sheets and news releases, can be viewed and shared from DEP’s website at www.dep.pa.gov/litteringactionplan. The fall cleanup results mirrored those of the litter study. The top five items collected during the fall cleanup initiative were cigarette butts, 14,348; plastic bottles, 4,637; food wrappers, 4,016; tires, 3,499; and beverage cans, 3,418. Pick Up Pennsylvania is held in support of the International Coastal Cleanup, a volunteer effort to improve the health of the world’s oceans and waterways. The cleanup gives citizens around the world the opportunity to clean up their local waterways and to be a part of a larger movement. Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful coordinates the effort in Pennsylvania. Funding for the International Coastal Cleanup coordination in Pennsylvania is provided by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection Bureau of Waste Management and Coastal Resource Management. Miller feels that working on a production like this is a good experience for the students and the school overall. “Musical theater brings a lot of things together,” she noted. “To create the program design, set creation - it’s a fun way to get so many disciplines together in one event.
