Recipe for Peanut Butter Reindeer Cookies Food helps to set the festive atmosphere that has become synonymous with the holiday season. Many celebrants asked to recall their fondest memories of the holiday season would point to nights spent surrounded by loved ones at the family dinner table, which serves as a testament to the unifying power of food during a special time of year. Holiday hosts looking to use food to set a festive tone can consider this recipe for “Peanut Butter Reindeer Cookies” from Lines+Angles.
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 48 large red M&M candies 96 mini semisweet chocolate chips Pretzels, broken into 96 1-inch pieces
Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper. 2. In a large bowl, beat together butter, peanut butter, sugar, and brown sugar on medium speed until light and f luffy, about 2 minutes. Add egg Peanut Butter Reindeer and vanilla extract and Cookies mix until combined. Makes 48 cookies 3. In a small bowl, whisk together flour, baking Ingredients: soda, and salt. Add the 1/2 cup unsalted butter, dry ingredients to the softened wet ingredients and stir 3/4 cup peanut butter until just combined. Roll 1/3 cup granulated sugar the dough into 1-inch 1/3 cup packed light brown balls, and place at least sugar 1 inch apart on cookie 1 large egg sheet. Bake only 10 to 12 1 teaspoon pure vanilla cookies at a time. Refrigextract erate the bowl of dough in between batches. Bake for 7 to 9 minutes, until the cookies are just set. 4. Immediately place one M&M in the center of each cookie for a nose (press down a bit if cookies aren’t flat enough), 2 mini chocolate chips for the eyes, and 2 pretzel pieces at the top for antlers. Carefully transfer the cookies to a wire rack to cool completely.

Remembering Christmas all the other lights to not work. Of course, Christmas is about the birth of Jesus, and Christians everywhere attend services on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, and their spirits are lifted by the sacred music and the spirit of celebration. Technology again plays a role since those who are unable to make it to church can attend ser vices via livestream. So Christmas Past may not be familiar with a world where shopping is done with a click, where we use phone apps, where we send digital greetings instead of actual Christmas cards, where we use streaming ser vices for music and entertainment and where children can monitor Santa’s progress around the world on the NORAD Santa app. But what remains the same is that Christmas is a time of giving, spending time with family and friends and embracing that general sense of wonder and magic. Ways to Spend the New Year in Nature The arrival of a new year is a time of celebration for people across the globe. It is customary to mark the occasion with fireworks, countdowns, and champa g ne. For thos e who indulge a little too much on New Year’s Eve or stay up well past midnight, Jan. 1 may be a day to recuperate. But spending New Year’s Day in nature is a great way to enjoy the first few hours of a new year. Go hiking. Time spent in crisp air and, possibly, freshly fallen snow can offer a great way to recharge and approach the new year in a novel way. First Day Hikes were created by America’s State Parks to encourage people to enjoy the out-
doors. They are held across the United States on Jan. 1. Host a firepit brunch. Spending time around the firepit may seem like an activity tailor-made for autumn evenings, but dusk need not have fallen to enjoy an outdoor fire. Dress warmly and gather friends around a firepit or outdoor fireplace. Swap s’mores for cheese cubes on sticks that can be made warm and slightly melted over the open flames. Float or paddle. Take in nature from the water. Although these types of events may be better in warmer climates, those who are courageous enough to brave the elements can spend some time kayaking
or floating on waterways that have not frozen over. Head to the slopes or a skating rink. Winter and skiing or ice skating are a perfect match. Spend the first day of the year testing out fresh powder, practicing double axels, or sipping hot cocoa in the ski lodge. Visit a theme park. Some theme parks are still open after hosting holiday-centric special events. Crowds may be small on New Year’s Day, ensuring ride enthusiasts can ride their favorite coasters multiple times. New Year’s Day doesn’t need to be all about headaches and sleeping in. Spending time outdoors is a fresh way to enjoy the start of a new year.

If a Ghost from Christmas Past came to visit today, he may not be familiar with some of the new practices that have become commonplace in today’s world. In days gone by - I am now old enough to use that phrase - the Christmas season began on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving. Back then, we did not see holiday displays in the stores on Halloween or even earlier. Black Friday was when stores like K-Mart held special sales that began at 5 or 6 a.m. That is when you visited the store to grab a $49 VCR or a $99 25-inch television. The news shows on Black Friday morning were filled with scenes of people storming into a store or a shopping mall to grab a bargain. To d ay, m a ny p e o p l e choose to shop online. Some malls have even closed because people prefer the ease of ordering and having items shipped right to their homes. While growing up, the King of Prussia Mall was the place to go at Christmastime with the elaborate decorations and a huge selection
of stores where we could do our Christmas shopping. It was a bit of a hike for us from our home, but we made a day of it, shopping and then eating in the mall’s food court. A store back then called Korvettes was one of the first stores in the area to have an escalator, and we kids would take endless rides on it. We were completely fascinated by those moving stairs. Of course, we still decorate today as we did in the past, but now there are prelit artificial trees that you can buy online, and you can synchronize the lights with an app. Many people, however, prefer a live tree and visiting the Christmas tree farm to choose just the right one. After the usual struggle of getting that tree into the stand, then comes dealing with the tangled strings of light. And no matter how careful we are in the previous year, there are always one or two ornaments that just don’t make it. Even after testing, it is inevitable that one rebellious light string on the tree goes dark . That means searching for a missing bulb or the one faulty bulb that causes

partners with health care providers to ensure that patients are suppor ted during and after medical care to help ease their transition and suppor t long-term health. In March, YGBW will pilot an enhanced version of its popular falls prevention program, A Matter of Balance, at its Coatesville branch. In par tnership with Elite Therapy Solutions, participants in the pilot will receive a func-
tional fitness assessment per for med by an E lite physical therapist.
