Chiques COB To Mark 150th Anniversary Chiques Church of the Brethren (COB) will continue the commemoration of its 150th anniversary during a special homecoming worship service on Sunday, Sept. 16. The service will begin at 10:15 a.m. at the church, located at 4045 Sunnyside Road, Manheim. The Rev. Dr. Jeff Carter, president of Bethany Theological Seminary, Richmond, Ind., will deliver the anniversary sermon. The service will also include music from a popular former Chiques male quartet composed of Mike Shelly, Frank Rittenhouse, Steve Faus, and Jim Miller, along with a choral benediction from the senior choir. During the 9 a.m. Sunday school hour, Don Fitzkee, who is currently researching and writing a history of the congregation to be released in 2019, will lead a historical presentation and facilitate a time of sharing memories. At noon, the church will provide a

meal for church members and guests. Following the meal, Fitzkee will lead a historical tour in a coach bus. Sites will include a 1756 house on Chiques Road where early worship was held, an early outdoor baptismal site, the congregation’s former Mount Hope Meetinghouse, and the 1859 Kreider Meetinghouse near Manheim, where participants will view the historically preserved building and join in a brief hymn sing. The Kreider Meetinghouse is one location where the Chiques COB congregation worshipped prior to its separation from White Oak COB. Interested individuals are asked to sign up for the meal and the historical tour by Sunday, Sept. 2, by contacting Linda Bruckhart at 717-475-7731 or glbruckhart@gmail.com. According to Fitzkee, Brethren had settled in Rapho and Mount Joy townships, near where the present church

building is located, by the early to mid1700s. Initially, those Brethren worshipped in homes. The first meetinghouse was built on the site of the present church building in 1856. Chiques divided from White Oak to become an independent congregation in 1868, and the congregation’s territory initially extended from what is now Route 72/Manheim Pike west to the Susquehanna River, with Sunday worship rotating among various locations to share the burden of travel. In 1902, Chiques divided once again, forming three daughter churches - East Fairview COB in Manheim, Elizabethtown COB, and West Green Tree COB in Mount Joy Township. Since its beginning, Chiques COB has been served by a non-salaried, plural ministry, in which bi-vocational ministers are called from within the congregation to serve for life. Michael S. Kate Green, Kathy Kuhns, Maureen Lewandowski, and Connie Radziewicz are just a few of the 20-plus women who make up the Teal Sisters, a multigenerational support group for women diagnosed with ovarian cancer. After crossing paths at the office of Dr. Jacqueline Evans, a Lancaster-area gynecologic oncologist, the ladies began meeting together in 2015 on the fourth Tuesday of each month to talk and support one another. Teal is the color that symbolizes ovarian cancer, so the ladies also sport the shade for Teal Tuesdays. “We met informally at each other’s houses but decided in addition to talking about where we were and laughing, See Teal Sisters pg 8
