Thousands of heirloom tomato and pepper and herb plants will be ready for area gardeners to purchase in the coming weeks, thanks to the efforts of a group of Manheim Central High School (MCHS) FFA students. The first opportunity to purchase the plants will be at a sale that will take place from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 4, at MCHS, 400 E. Adele Ave., Manheim, in the agriculture science area beside the school greenhouse. Separate prices have been set for tomato and herb plants and for pepper plants. Proceeds from the sale will support the MCHS FFA. MCHS agriculture science teacher Dr. Seth Kensinger said that while the heirloom tomato sale is an annual event that FFA students partake in, this is the first year that they added peppers and herbs into the selection. “We have ideas and want to expand the project

even more next year,” noted Kensinger. MCHS senior Jacob Hess explained that heirloom plant varieties are a pure breed rather than a hybrid. “What sets them apart is that they come from pure seeds that were not cross-pollinated,” Jacob said. “You can keep saving the seeds, so (some of these varieties) could be 100 years old.” The project began in February with students planting seeds in the school’s greenhouse. From there, students volunteered to water and care for the seedlings after school. Toward the end of March and into April, they carefully transplanted a total of 5,000 plants to prepare for the sale. Getting all of the seeds transplanted in a timely manner is the most challenging part of the project, according to Jacob, who has been involved in the annual project every year since he was a freshman.
