In 2015, Stacy Emminger started Donegal Substance Abuse Alliance (DSAA) as a parent support group, running meetings from her living room.
Now the organization is marking its 10th anniversary with an open house, which will focus on how DSAA has grown and the impact it has made in the community.
The drop-in open house will be held on Friday, Aug. 29, from 3 to 7 p.m. at DSAA, 78 E. Main St., Mount Joy.
The event will feature speakers; refreshments; opportunities to meet and talk with staff and board members; and displays of DSAA’s work, from a slideshow to artwork from the nonprofit’s Art Heals program.

The world would be a pretty dull place if we were all alike, if we all did the same things and if we all thought the same way.
Lancaster Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (Lancaster AAPI) promotes diversity and celebrates all the things that make us different. But the social group also salutes the things we have in common.
In the process of acceptance, understanding and familiarity are essential early steps.

“Scouting is a great opportunity for families and Scouts to come together and learn about community, safety and outdoor fun,” said Melanie Cassidy, Wolf den leader for Cub Scout Pack 39.
The pack will hold two upcoming events to encourage boys and girls in kindergarten through fifth grade to consider joining Cub Scouts.
A Roundup event will be held
individuals, families and communities,” said Emminger, DSAA’s executive director. “Our services include supporting families who are impacted by addiction, grief support, referral to treatment and other resources (and) educational presentations about addiction and recovery support.”
In 2017, DSAA filed to become a 501(c)(3) and opened its first office on West Main Street in Mount Joy. In 2019, the organization received a contract from Lancaster County
“That’s what it’s all about, finding people with whom we have things in common,” said Cindy Lam Guo, president and one of the founding members of Lancaster AAPI. “If you don’t have that sense of belonging, it’s not home. I don’t want my kids to feel like they’re different. That sense of connection is what Lancaster AAPI is all about.”
Lancaster AAPI is civically minded and advocates for inclusivity, but the group does not conduct regular formal meetings in an office or a brickand-mortar building. Instead, the organization hosts four seasonal potluck meals each year - “breaking rice together” - and partners with similar nonprofits to advocate for the group’s interests through a handful of events held in various locations around Lancaster County, including Manheim Township and the city of Lancaster.
On Feb. 2, more than 3,000 individuals attended Lancaster AAPI’s Lunar New Year celebration at Ewell Plaza and Binns Park in the city.
Lancaster AAPI also sponsors a scholarship program as part of its youth outreach initiative.

would go.
“I am amazed at how DSAA has grown,” she said. “I don’t know exactly what I thought it would become when I started it but so much of what we do now was not in my plan. It really feels like it has a life of its own. Opportunities appear and I’ve always been willing to take a risk and go for it. It hasn’t always been easy and it’s a lot of hard work, but the results are so worth it.”
Pretending it isn’t happening isn’t the answer.”
She believes the path to breaking the stigma of addiction is to meet it head on and talk about it.

The event will include a showing of the 20-minute documentary, a discussion and a Q&A session.
DSAA also received a grant to support its Recovery Capital program in 2021, a pilot program that began with one peer support specialist.
She noted that about 2,000 people a year come through DSAA programs.
“That’s been my mission from the day my son died,” she shared. “For years while he was struggling, we hid his addiction because of the stigma. We didn’t get help that we needed. There wasn’t much help at that time in our area, and what help there was, we didn’t know about. My personal mission was to spread awareness and education about addiction and to give families the help we didn’t get.”

“We now have six staff working with individuals in the criminal justice system,” Emminger shared. “We’re also providing yoga classes and drug and alcohol classes in Lancaster County Prison. In September we will begin providing art classes in Lancaster County Prison.”
When she started DSAA to find healing after the loss of her son to addiction, Emminger wasn’t sure where the organization
“Our goal is that each of those individuals is treated with compassion, respect and understanding,” she said. “I have a fantastic staff that is dedicated to our clients. I have a great board who supports our work. DSAA is about serving others and we live that.”
Emminger said DSAA addresses a universal need.
“DSAA is important because addiction isn’t going anywhere. It impacts every community,” she remarked. “When I first started DSAA, people told me they didn’t think we were needed because ‘we don’t have that problem here.’ They were wrong. It is a problem everywhere.
Community members can support the mission and work of DSAA by donating gently used clothing to the clothing bank or hygiene products for Care Kits. People are invited to join the board, donate funds, hold fundraisers or simply spread the word about DSAA.
“The more people know about us, the more families we can help,” Emminger said.
The organization will also host the fifth annual Nick Hershey Pickleball Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 20. On Wednesday, Oct. 8, DSAA will partner
As she looks to the next 10 years, Emminger envisions continuing to work to destigmatize addiction. She hopes people will come to the open house to see the space and learn about the organization’s programs.
“Lots of people don’t even know we’re here unless they need us,” she said. “We are a part of the community, and we participate in community events, but I feel people avoid us because of the stigma of addiction. I want people to feel comfortable coming to us when they need us. We do have programs that are open to the community as well. We see ourselves as a little bit of a community center.”

Stop by the Senior Center at GEARS in Elizabethtown, and you never know what you might see.
“There’s a little something different happening each day,” said Jess Raush, Senior Center director.
Seniors might be playing Wii games, gardening, enjoying trivia, taking community walks or competing in bingo. Breakfast is served two days a week, and lunch is offered Monday through Friday at the center, located at 70 S. Poplar St., Elizabethtown.
The programs are funded in part by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture and the Lancaster County Office of Aging, and all programs and activities are designed with the center’s mission in mind: to enhance the dignity, independence and community involvement of older citizens. The organization also seeks to provide good nutritional, social, educational, recreational and cultural programs for participants; to provide a support system of informational and referral services for those
with specific needs; and to provide opportunities for learning new skills, personal growth and the sharing of common interests.
“We’re here for fun and camaraderie,” Raush said.
“We offer a little bit of something for everyone!”
Programs are offered free of charge to anyone age 60 and up, although donations are received in a donation box on-site if people feel moved to give.
Participants come from a large service area that includes Elizabethtown, Bainbridge, Mount Joy, Salunga, Landisville and Manheim.
The staff members of the Senior Center are always looking for new ways to entertain guests and enhance the lives of seniors, so when a community member named Karen stopped by to volunteer, Raush was thrilled.
“Karen was a nurse prior to retiring,” Raush said. “She brings hats, she plays the guitar as she sings and she sings songs that the seniors would be familiar with - songs from their time growing up.”
Known among Senior Center visitors as “the Singing Nurse,” Karen loves giving back to her community.
“She has so much joy; after her first time joining us, the seniors were hooked and liked having her!” Raush said, encouraging other members of the community to consider volunteering. “If you have a special talent for music, crafts, gardening, health (or really almost anything), we can use you! “The Roundup will provide the parents information about Cub Scouts and give them the opportunity to ask questions,” explained Stephanie Steele, Bear den leader. “While the parents are learning about Cub Scouts, we will have some activities for the kids to do with some of the Cub Scouts in our Bear and Webelos den. These activities will include making paper airplanes, racing cars on a short derby track, games and more.”
“Scouts is an opportunity to become well rounded and try many hobbies,” shared Robbin Campbell, Tiger den leader. “Our activities include STEM, citizenship, first aid, outdoor skills and more. It satisfies the Scouts’ curiosity about their world and sets them up for a life of learning and pursuing new adventures.”
Pack 39 meets every Thursday starting in September and wraps up the official Scout year at the end of March, although opportunities for fun extend beyond that timeframe, Steele said.

The pack will also hold a Cub Scout Carnival from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 4, at the church.
“The carnival will include stations and activities for the kids - current Scouts and new Scouts - to participate in,” Steele said. “These will include air rockets, planes, s’mores at a fire, a rain gutter regatta, relay races and water games.”
Pack leaders emphasized that youths receive a fun and expansive experience in Cub Scouts.
“We do have many activities for the Scouts to attend during the summer such as fishing, camping, hiking, biking and more,” she remarked. “So far this summer, we have completed five of the GO Lancaster! hikes together as a pack and held a bike rodeo. During the hikes, the Scouts practice reading and following directions, get exercise and learn some hiking essentials. During the bike rodeo, we reviewed proper hand signals when riding a bike, discussed appropriate attire for a bike ride and discussed how to check to make sure your helmet is on correctly.”
And Cub Scouts is about much more than just having fun, she said.
“Scouting gives children many opportunities to try new things and learn about the world around them,” she stated. “One of the biggest benefits of Scouting is teaching children to volunteer and give back to their community. When the Scouts collect food for the food bank or create thank-you cards for veterans, they feel a sense of accomplishment. They learn the importance of helping others and contributing positively to the world around them.”
Pack 39 just started up again two years ago after pausing for the pandemic.
“We started as a small pack, but we are happy to report that our numbers are growing, and we love to see so many children excited to help their community and try new adventures,” Steele said.
Pack 39 is supported by the Mount Joy Rotary Club and the Knights of Columbus. For more information,

“Part of us is a social group, but we do advocate for our community,” said Lam Guo, a resident of Manheim Township. “If there’s something we want to advocate for, we show up. But we never push anything on people. Within the Asian community, there are also different people.”
“It’s really a safe space,” she continued. “Our mission is to celebrate, connect, bring us together and let people know we have a voice. We want to educate people and let people know who we are. It’s fun for us to all come together. But at the end of the day, we’re a minority group.”
Through steady growth since its founding, Lancaster AAPI’s membership
now numbers 300 Lancaster County residents. Many of the members are second- or third-generation citizens who live in Lancaster County communities like the city and Manheim Township.
“In the Asian culture, there are a lot of traditions we value,” said Lam Guo. “We come from immigrant families. Our grandparents worked hard and tried to
pave a way for us. We take part of that and try to make a way for future generations. We try to piece two worlds together. I think the biggest difference (between the two worlds) is that we don’t take a lot of things for granted. Things weren’t given to our grandparents. They came here with nothing. We recognize how hard we have to work for the things we get because we saw how hard they had to work. That’s what binds us.”
It is estimated that the Asian American and Pacific Islander population in Lancaster County currently numbers more than 14,000 residents, or about 2.6% of the locale’s total population.
Lancaster AAPI was established in 2023.
“COVID was a really tough time for a lot of Asian Americans, and (Lancaster AAPI) was a safe space to come together,” said Lam Guo. “If we’re all separated, how do people know we have a voice? It has grown so much. Every single time we get together, it feels like there’s new people. When they join Lancaster AAPI, it feels like they’re home again.”
“We are here, and we are building a community,” Lam Guo continued. “We’ve extended our arms to welcome other communities, and we hope everyone will welcome us because this is our home as well. We hope everyone will take the time to see us, hear us and value us.”
For additional information, go to www.lancaster aapi.com.
“On every corner and on every block and at every traffic light across Lancaster County, there is an Asianowned business,” said Lam Guo. “Some people aren’t as open-minded because it’s unfamiliar. But the Asian American community will continue to drive commerce in the county. There have been so many other contributions made. If you never take the time to learn about it, you’ll never know what’s beautiful about it. If (people) can understand it, there will be more appreciation for it. We need to start developing appreciations for other cultures, and not just the Asian culture.”
Trinity Lutheran Church of Colebrook, 58 Church Road, Manheim, will host Nickolas Sieber’s Traditional Jazz & Ragtime Festival on Saturday, Aug. 23. Attendees of the event will enjoy a living history experience highlighting music of the American songbook from the 1890s through 1930.
Sieber’s festival will include performances from Miss Maybell and Charlie Judkins, a duo from New York City; Ramona Baker, a pianist from New York City; Gavin Rice, a banjoist from Rochester, N.Y.; and the Blackbird Society Orchestra from Philadelphia. In addition to music, professional dancers Roddy Caravella
and Gretchen Fenston will lead a 1920s dance lesson of the Peabody. A social dance of foxtrots, tangos, swing, and more will run throughout the course of the festival.
The festival will also include a 1920s lawn party with pre-war car rides, a croquet tournament, fashion displays, and special guest R.W. Tintypes offering authentic 19th-century tintype photography portrait sittings. Trinity Lutheran Church of Colebrook will prepare food that will be available for purchase throughout the day.
