Hempfield Band Show Will Be a Quiet Riot

The Hempfield High School marching band will be making a statement even when it’s not making a sound.

The unit’s fall program for football games and competitions is called “Shh!”

“It’s about the sound of silence, so we have some parts of the show that are really loud and then they get right to quiet just to have the feeling of silence,” explained senior drum major Liv Schmidt explained.

“It’s kind of hard in a marching band show because you think big, loud instruments, but it’s really all about embracing the silence to have your own thoughts.”

The Black Knights’ marching band has been preparing for its show with camps in August. After a minicamp, Hempfield held two

weeks of camp from Aug. 4 to 8 and Aug. 11 to 15. The band practiced from 12:30 to 9 p.m., including an hour dinner break and some fun activities.

Junior drum major Adam Binder was impressed. “I like the work ethic I’ve seen. It has been through the roof,” he said. “I love to see the effort and focus that everyone is putting in the skill level people are achieving already. It’s awesome to see.”

“Shh!” is composed of three songs: Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, “The Sound of Silence” by Simon and Garfunkel, and Symphony No. 9 by Beethoven.

“Beethoven was deaf for a large part of his career,” Liv said. “Our show is also including some parts of what your experience would be if you were deaf.”

Band director Matt Ceresini said, “We thought it would be interesting

to start a show where we go, ‘Shh!’ and get the audience to feel a little more involved. It’s like breaking the fourth wall a little bit. That was the original idea, and then we were just talking about ways we could do that. There’s a couple of silent parts, and then we have a part that’s going to have American Sign Language in it, too. We’re going to communicate with the audience without sound.

“There’s also a part just exploring the use of sound,” Ceresini continued. “The color guard is using flags made of metal. When they move through the air, it makes a really loud sound. We’re exploring all the ways we can use sound and silence.”

On Saturday, Sept. 13, Hempfield will host Opening Night in the football stadium, 340 Mumma Drive, beginning at 6 p.m. West

Christine Helm has not been able read a book since being involved in an automobile collision nine years ago.

But she has written one in that span.

In June, the West Hempfield Township resident self-published her first book, “Chicken Therapy.”

“Chicken Therapy” is the story of how Helm regained a normal life by undergoing vision therapy and observing chickens and ducks her family was raising.

The book can be purchased at www.chickentherapy.com and in two stores in Columbia - HomeGoodies & Coffee, 336 Locust St., and Andy’s Market, 310 N. 11th St. She also expects the book to be available on Amazon.

In 2016, the vehicle carrying Christine and her daughter, Jenifer, was hit head-on by a distracted driver. The Helms suffered seemingly minor injuries and were released from the hospital the night of the crash. However, Christine, experiencing a concussion and double vision, found that her condition worsened.

“I tried to go back to teaching, and then my vision would just get worse, and I had headaches and nausea,” said Christine. “I wrote the book because I eventually ended up losing my job as a high school math teacher. My vision was so off that I couldn’t function well at all.”

Christine said she was ultimately diagnosed with damage in the nerves that control eye movements, and treatments did not work. “I didn’t know what to do,” she said. “I was in a deep depression. I couldn’t function;

Something for Every Senior

Stop by the Senior Center at GEARS in Elizabethtown, and you never know what you might see.

“There’s a little something different happening each day,” said Jess Raush, Senior Center director.

Seniors might be playing Wii games, gardening, enjoying trivia, taking community walks or competing in bingo. Breakfast is served two days a week, and lunch is offered Monday through Friday at the center, located at 70 S. Poplar St., Elizabethtown.

The programs are funded in part by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture and the Lancaster County Office of Aging, and all programs and activities are designed with the center’s mission in mind: to enhance the dignity, independence and community involvement of older citizens. The organization also seeks to provide good nutritional, social, educational, recreational and cultural programs for participants; to provide a support system of informational and referral services for those with

specific needs; and to provide opportunities for learning new skills, personal growth and the sharing of common interests.

“We’re here for fun and camaraderie,” Raush said. “We offer a little bit of something for everyone!”

Programs are offered free of charge to anyone age 60 and up, although donations are received in a donation box on-site if people feel moved to give. Participants come from a large service area that includes Elizabethtown, Bainbridge, Mount Joy, Salunga, Landisville and Manheim.

The staff members of the Senior Center are always looking for new ways to entertain guests and enhance the lives of seniors, so when a community member named Karen stopped by to volunteer, Raush was thrilled.

“Karen was a nurse prior to retiring,” Raush said. “She brings hats, she plays the guitar as she sings and she sings songs that the seniors would be familiar with - songs from their time growing up.”

Known among Senior

Center visitors as “the Singing Nurse,” Karen loves giving back to her community.

“She has so much joy; after her first time joining us, the seniors were hooked and liked having her!” Raush said, encouraging other members of the community to consider volunteering.

“If you have a special talent for music, crafts, gardening, health (or really almost anything), we can use you! The most important part is to

have a smile.”

While programs like Karen’s are entertaining, they also serve another purpose: helping seniors thrive.

“We’re here to put smiles on people’s faces,” Raush noted. “We meet so many needs including social, (nutritional) as well as helping people find social services they may need.”

For more information on volunteering, call Raush at 717-367-7984 or stop by the center.

Touchstone Foundation Expands Youth Programming

Touchstone Foundation has announced the expansion of its mental health mentorship programming.

The summer Rise Above program will be offered as a new after-school program or student club for Lancaster County high school students during the school year, expanding pathways for students to become youth mental health advocates.

The Rise Above program connects Lancaster County high school students with trusted adult mentors, including mental health professionals, teaching artists, and local leaders. The program aims to foster safe spaces for students to explore their identity, strengthen coping skills, and gain confidence through community, creativity, and conversation.

With grant funding from the Lancaster County Community Foundation’s Next Generation Grant, the Touchstone Foundation has developed a new curriculum for Rise Above after-school programs. The curriculum is built around three key

modules: discovering yourself, interacting with others, and looking to the future. Students will participate in guided sessions on sound healing, poetry, journaling, racial equity, safe teen dating, and more.

In response to a need for youth mentorship, Touchstone Foundation is funding additional mentorship and youth wellness partnerships with organizations including City Limits Foundation Grant, Welcoming Connections, YWCA Lancaster, Big Brothers Big Sisters of South-Central PA, The Hood Hippie Love Yourself, Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health, Community Wellness, Community Services Group, Bench Mark Program, 415 East Recording, and Soliman Photography & Videography.

I didn’t know what to do with my life. So I called a concussion therapist who I really had liked, and she said, ‘Why don’t you try this vision therapy?’”

Nine months of vision therapy helped her strengthen some muscles around her eyes. “They taught my brain to comprehend what it was seeing that was now different than it used to be, and they just taught me how to cope with everything,” Christine said. “Don’t read for more than 20 minutes. Take a few deep breaths. If you’re driving and you feel like your vision is getting bad, pull over.”

Festival Set in Downtown Lancaster

The Lancaster Craft Beerfest will be held on Saturday, Aug. 23, at Ewell Plaza and Binns Park on Queen Street in Lancaster. People may attend from noon to 3 p.m. or from 4 to 7 p.m. The event will feature more than 35 breweries, food vendors, live music, and more.

She is faring well, all things considered. “I have times when I feel completely normal, but I am limited, and I’ve learned how to adjust my life,” Christine said. “I take a break after working on a computer for 20 minutes. I can do it for a couple hours a day. But if I forget to take breaks and the double vision kind of gets worse, it’s kind of like my muscles can only hold on for so long. But I’m living a very normal life because of the techniques that vision therapy taught me.”

While battling depression, Christine recalled something that had previously made her happy. “I used to love to write, and I had chickens, and I was always writing stories about my chickens,” she said. “The day I graduated from vision therapy, I didn’t want to graduate because that’s only (time) I felt normal again.”

Christine decided that a light, funny story involving chickens would be an entertaining way to teach people about vision therapy. “That

was kind of what inspired me to write it the book,” she said. “First of all, I want people to learn about vision therapy in an enjoyable way and that maybe they could spread the word. This (illness) came from a concussion that didn’t go away that caused a traumatic brain injury. And I think a lot of people go through things like this, and they can relate to it.”

The Helms have approximately 25 chickens and 15 ducks. “I always spend a lot of time just sitting and enjoying them and observing them,” said Christine. “But then I started writing about some of the things that they did, and I learned to slow down and actually watch them and live life.”

Sometimes foxes would make an unwelcome visit. “I learned that you can’t prevent the bad things from happening. You just kind of have to survive and maybe learn to grow and enjoy the moment anyway,” she said.

Writing the book was a painstaking process that took seven years because of the limitations caused by concussion symptoms and vision issues. “I actually went to the beach two or three times, just by myself, and writing was all I did,” Christine said. “And then my husband (Steve) had this idea that he’s going to build me of those prefab sheds. And then I had everything spread out in there. So then I eventually got everything transcribed in the computer and put it in order.”

It has been as cathartic and rewarding as Christine had hoped. “I had so much happiness when I was writing this book,” she said. “I really enjoyed it, and I would love to write more books. I have a couple ideas, but trying to get this (first book) launched off the ground is very time-consuming right now. I wish I would have tried to be a writer years ago.”

Food vendors will include Chellas Arepa Kitchen, Nano Burger, Walk-O Taco, Diyo Fusion, Scoops Ice Cream & Grille, Gnawjaw Jerky, Endo Cafe, and the Lancaster Pickle Company.

Band of Llamas, which performed last year, will return for both sessions to provide live music.

UDSF Announces Promotions

As United Disabilities Services Foundation (UDSF) celebrates its 60th anniversary, the organization has announced the promotion of six individuals who have exemplified outstanding leadership and commitment.

Chester University’s Incomparable Golden Rams

Marching Band will perform and give clinics to the high school band members.

Adam Gumble, Ceresini’s predecessor at Hempfield, is WCU’s band director.

In addition to performing at the slate of football games and the Homecoming parade, the Hempfield marching band will tackle a full competition season including the state championships on Saturday, Nov. 1, and the national championships at the Meadowlands in New Jersey on Saturday, Nov. 8.

Ceresini stated that there are two significant reasons that Hempfield prefers competitions to the festival format some schools now favor.

“One is historically, Hempfield has been a competitive band, so it’s what our community knows and it’s an important part of our legacy,” he said. “The other thing is, for me as an educator, competition is an intrinsic motivator that is really hard to replicate otherwise. We talk to the kids all the time. We don’t focus on our score. We don’t

focus on winning because we can’t control what the other bands do. If another band comes out and they’re perfect, they deserve to win. … We focus a lot on what we can do as individuals to become as great as we can, and competition is a really nice way to motivate towards that because you know you’re going to be evaluated. You know there’s going to be a judge there. We build a lot of our culture with how hard we work and how we support each other and encourage each other and things like that, aimed at competition, but it’s just kind of a tool to teach us to work hard.”

Hempfield has 113 band members this fall - seven more than last year. “A lot of that is because the kids have created this really cool environment that people want to be a part of,” Ceresini said. “The one really cool thing has been (that) the kids have done a great job over the past few years of being extremely passionate and encouraging towards each other. It has made our practices really fun. Because of that, other kids hear about it and join.”
