PSPCA Offers Pet Food Assistance The Lancaster County Community Foundation in partnership with the United Way of Lancaster County awarded the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PSPCA) Lancaster Center a $2,000 grant to assist pet owners in need throughout the region. The funds have been put into action to provide pet food as families face the health and economic impacts of the coronavirus. The PSPCA Lancaster Center, 848 S. Strict procedures for the safe handling and quarantining of returned library items will be in place before print materials, CDs, and DVDs can be checked out to the public again. Many libraries will use a curbside delivery or pickup system to convey items to their patrons while maintaining recommended social distancing. The public is encouraged to contact their local library to find out what services will be available in their area. Libraries have remained open for business online throughout the stay-at-home order by expanding access to library cards, bolstering digital content, and offering virtual programming. Vendors must provide their own tables. Electricity will be available. There is a cost per space to participate in the farmers market. The proceeds will benefit the Next Gen Senior Center. “We run mainly on donations - a lot from seniors who give with their meals, Reeves said. Typically, the center is open to individuals age 60 and older on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Free transportation is provided to and from the center. Clients come from as far as Gap, White Horse, Strasburg, Willow Street, Holtwood, Pequea, and Martic. “We love to have people join, Reeves commented. “The seniors that come here come to socialize and for entertainment. We keep them busy. All of the activities at the center - including chair yoga, geri-fit exercises, games, performances, and daily hot meals - are offered free of charge. Donation jars are located on every table, however, so that individuals who are able to contribute may do so anonymously. “Each meal costs $5.12, but we cannot charge them, Reeves said. “We don’t ask them for anything, just their attendance. The senior center has been closed since the middle of March, but it has not been inactive. Libraries Begin To Reopen Doors As Lancaster County moves to the yellow phase, some public libraries will reopen with limited services, consistent with recommendations from the Pennsylvania Office of Commonwealth Libraries. Most county public libraries will start lending print materials, CDs, and DVDs. The health and safety of patrons and staff are of highest importance to the public libraries in Lancaster County; therefore, not all services will be available. A few Lancaster County public libraries will remain closed until they can more safely accommodate the public and staff in their spaces. Readers should contact their local library to find out what services they will offer. The decision has been made to cancel all hold requests for all library patrons of Lancaster County’s public libraries. Due to the limitations of the library database software, there was no easy way to fulfill patron holds while allowing for the safe and timely handling of library materials. Other services, like public use computers and in-person programming, will be available again once they

Gov. Tom Wolf proclaimed May 22, the 143rd day of the year, as 1-4-3 Day, a statewide day of kindness in honor of Pennsylvania native Fred Rogers. Rogers, best known from his beloved television series, “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood,” exemplified compassion and regularly used 1-4-3 as another way of saying “I love you,” with 1-4-3 representing the number of letters in each word. As the state continues to navigate the COVID-19 crisis, Wolf encouraged all Pennsylvanians to spread even more kindness, more love, and more generosity to essential workers and neighbors on 1-4-3 Day. In 2019, Pennsylvanians shared more than 17,000 acts of kindness on social media on 1-4-3 Day. This year, in particular,
individuals had the opportunity to show the positive impact that neighborliness can have during more difficult times by recognizing and thanking essential workers and frontline employees through acts of kindness and appreciation. As many Pennsylvanians prepared to celebrate 1-4-3 Day at home, the state updated its Kindness Generator website to provide extra inspiration. The website, https://143day.dced.pa.gov/, includes a Kindness Tracker, a tally of all the great deeds Pennsylvanians did throughout the day, which are counted by using the hashtag #143DayinPA. To join the conversation, readers may follow visitPA on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram and use #143DayInPA to keep up with all the good deeds and acts of kindness.

Like banks across the country, Northwest Bank (NWBI), headquartered in Warren, has been working to help small businesses curb the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. As soon as the Small Business Administration (SBA) released guidance to banks on the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), Northwest teams assembled to analyze the details and develop an open, client-friendly approach to the application process, no matter a business’s industry or size. The company launched a number of ways to connect with clients and work with them to collect the necessary application information, according to Mark Reitzes, Northwest’s head of commercial banking. Clients applying through Northwest could either connect one-onone with a business banker, who helped to gather the information required by the SBA, or submit their loan package through Northwest’s online application portal. “As soon as our portal opened, the company’s business bankers proactively reached out to clients to let them know that the bank was ready to take applications,” Reitzes said. “We provided checklists, a stepby-step video and FAQs to ensure they fully understood the relief program and requirements. We received applications from businesses of all sizes and industries across our entire four-state footprint.” Despite Northwest’s efforts, nationwide demand was much greater than expected. Funds were drained in just a few days after launch and the SBA stopped accepting applications. While many banks followed the SBA’s lead and stopped taking applications between the first and second rounds of government funding, Northwest took a different approach. In hopes that the PPP would be funded for a second round, the bank continued to help clients gather and prepare application information for submission. Because of this approach, Northwest was ready to submit applications when the SBA’s loan portal reopened. According to Reitzes, nearly 100% of the PPP loan applications that Northwest received were approved by the SBA - a total of 3,700 loans that will provide more than $425 million worth of relief. Northwest’s efforts served employers of all sizes across a wide span of entities, including manufacturing, restaurants, religious organizations, professional services, beauty salons and contractors. These efforts helped protect more than 35,000 employees. Northwest Bancshares Inc. is the holding company of Northwest Bank. Northwest operates 206 fullservice community banking offices and eight free standing drivethrough facilities in Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio and Indiana. Seminary Names Interim President The Lancaster Theological Seminary board of trustees has appointed Dr. David Rowe to serve as the graduate school’s interim president until a permanent president is hired. Rowe, of Windermere, Fla., will take on his new role on Wednesday, July 1, following the retirement of the Rev. Dr. Carol E. Lytch after nine years. With Rowe’s appointment, the board of trustees now will focus on the launch of a nationwide search for a permanent president to lead the 195-yearold seminary. During a 25-year career in higher education, Rowe has served as president of Centenary College of Louisiana, vice president of both LaGrange College and Wesleyan College in Georgia, and director of advancement and planning at Oxford College of Emory University. At
Emory’s Candler School of Theology, he graduated cum laude earning a Master of Divinity degree and worked in admissions and development. In addition to his Master of Divinity, Rowe’s academic credentials include a Ph.D. in educational policy studies from Georgia State University, a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from Southwestern University in Texas, and a Certificate in Ecumenical Studies from the University of Geneva. An ordained elder in the United Methodist Church, he has also worked as a hospital chaplain and youth minister. Since 2017, as founder and president of the Windermere Group, Rowe has advised colleges, universities, and national and international educational organizations on issues including organizational leadership, financial turnaround, fundraising,
Dr. David Rowe governance, program repositioning and strategic partnerships. He is a member of on-site review teams for the University Senate of the United Methodist Church. Rowe plans to move temporarily to Lancaster while serving as the seminary’s interim president.

The USS Constitution is the world’s oldest commissioned warship afloat and played a crucial role in the Barbary Wars and the War of 1812, actively defending sea lanes from 1797 to 1855. The ship earned the nickname “Old Ironsides” during the War of 1812 after British cannonballs were seen bouncing off the ship’s wooden hull. The crew of the USS Constitution was undefeated in battle and captured 33 opponents.

Starting on June 8, countybased businesses with 100 or fewer employees can now register at the aforementioned website for kits with PPE-related items including face masks, hand sanitizer and thermometers. The supply is significant and is intended to serve most of Lancaster County’s small businesses. The site’s grant application portal opened to Lancaster County-based businesses with 20 or fewer employees on June 15; it will remain open through 6:59 p.m. on Friday, June 19. Grants will not be awarded on a first-come, firstserved basis; individuals have through June 19 to submit applications. Once the application portal closes, the grant committee will begin evaluating all applications received. Those meeting the criteria and demonstrating the greatest need will be sent to the Lancaster County commissioners for approval, and recipients will be notified by email. The first phase of the funding program will offer grant opportunities totaling $10 million. In subsequent phases of the plan, the Recovery & Sustainability Fund is expected to offer an additional $15 million in grant awards to Lancaster County-based businesses with 100 or fewer employees. Economic Recovery Plan funding comes from the $95 million in Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act money that Lancaster County received from the federal government.

In 2016, House of His Creation (HOHC) became Family of Restoration Ministries (FORM). Shortly thereafter, the ministry moved from its location on Lititz Pike to 541 W. 28th Division Highway, Lititz. At the time, House of His Creation still existed as a maternity home on the new property, serving women age 18 and older. Loving and Caring Resources, which also came under the FORM umbrella, held on-site classes including The Parenting Journey and the Beautiful You events. In December 2019, the ministry decided to make another change. “We will be back to solely operating as HOHC,” read a letter from Matthew Neff, executive director. Loving and Caring Resources services will continue to be present and active at the site. Callie Neff, housing support specialist with HOHC, explained the transition. “We had become more of a teaching, training, and equipping kind of ministry (as FORM),” she noted. “We wanted to focus back on our primary mission, which is housing.” Over the nearly 50 years since HOHC was founded, the ministry mainly offered maternity housing with a mother and child component. The Neffs served at the house on Lititz Pike in that capacity. “We were living with young teen moms,” recalled Callie, “(but) who was calling (for help) changed.” Women who are in need of help now are usually between the ages of 18 to 24 and come from a variety of backgrounds, but they have a common need - a shortterm safe place to regroup. While there are an abundance of services in the Lancaster area, there is also great need. “For a woman to be told we should have an opening in two weeks - that’s too long,” said Matthew. “ We can fill in those two

weeks,” added Callie, who noted that HOHC will function with two different on-site models. First, the stone house will remain available for pregnant women. Bedrooms are available in the house where women can be served in a family model. “They live with our family and we offer case management, transportation, and the whole gamut of social services and support,” said Callie. The second model will be apartments located on the property that can fill the gap for women who need a safe place to stay for a few weeks. “The apartments are being shifted so that some of the rooms are designated for ministry purposes for women escaping (exploitation, human trafficking, or abuse),” said Callie. “They need that first stop to work through the crisis and figure out what’s next.” Matthew noted that as apartments become available, more will be open to the increased need for women in the Manheim, Ephrata, Warwick, and Manheim Township areas who have been seeking help in the last year. Once the crisis has passed, the ministry can help a woman begin to work toward goals. “It may be finding a program or housing,” said Callie. Matthew added that a woman need not have children to turn to the ministry for help, but he noted that children are often a motivating factor in leaving an unsafe situation. “(We can offer a place) for her and the children to sleep safely, and they have the chance to plan the future while being out of the (unsafe) circumstances,” Matthew said. Callie summed up the changes in the ministry, saying, “It has expanded beyond the limitation of calling just because of a pregnancy. A lot of the same factors are at work in the lives of these women, and the path to finding a way out is generally the same.” She added that a safe place and healthy supports are available to
