The Patriotic Stitchers for Veterans do not meet on a regular basis. The two women who oversee the program, Jean Summers and Kathy Baker, coordinate picking up quilts and afghans from members and then see that the comforters are delivered to one of four area hospice centers to be distributed to veterans. However, on a summer morning, 14 members of the group gathered at Our Lady of Lourdes in New Holland to get better acquainted and discuss a possible future fundraiser that is being planned with the Upper Leacock Township War See Patriotic Stitchers pg 4
JFS To Show Free Film On Warsaw Ghetto By Ann Mead Ash
Patriotic Stitchers Create Comfort And Warmth For Veterans
Group members from the Patriotic Stitchers for Veterans met to get better acquainted and display the blankets they had made for veterans at four area hospices. More quilters, knitters, and crocheters are welcome to join.
“This story is powerful because it speaks of people in the Warsaw Ghetto and how they clearly saw what their future was like,” said Bob Ruder. Ruder further explained that Jewish Family Services (JFS) was bringing “Who Will Write Our History,” a film written and directed by Roberta Grossman and executive produced by Nancy Spielberg, to Penn Cinema, 541 Airport Road, Lititz, on Monday, Nov. 11, as a followup to the group’s 2018 showing of “GI Jew.” Showings will be at 2 and 7 p.m. According to Ruder, the film goes back and forth in time, interspersing footage from World War II with present-day actors and actresses. “You See Free Film pg 3
To Save A Life … Or Two … Or More By Ann Mead Ash
Many years ago on a road trip, Dorlee Martin of Terre Hill and her husband, Darrel, saw a sign at a church asking for a kidney for someone in need of a transplant. Dorlee turned to Darrel and said, “Isn’t that awesome?” The idea of helping others through living organ donation stuck with Dorlee over the years that followed. “I always had this thought in the back of my mind that I would know someone who would need my kidney,” recalled Dorlee. When that did not happen, Dorlee decided to benefit a stranger … actually, several strangers, thanks to a kidney chain she started through the National Kidney Registry. Starting a kidney chain was See Organ Donor pg 5
Runner Dorlee Martin of Terre Hill donated a kidney in April to start a chain that benefited a number of recipients around the country. Dorlee was out running again one month after donating.
