Needed: New And Gently Used New Holland Youth Coats For Children And Teens Livestock Exposition Scheduled BY ANN MEAD ASH

When Katie Ranck, Bob Lauffer, and Dean Myers heard in May that the New Holland Farmers Fair for 2020 would be canceled due to COVID-19 concerns, they immediately contacted Farmers Fair board member Bill Fisher. Fisher oversees the livestock segment of the fair, and the three wanted to confirm that the livestock shows were part of that cancellation, which they were. “We respect that decision, but we also recognized that youths in the FFA and 4-H programs had (raised) livestock, and we wanted to provide an opportunity for them to have the experience of showing as well as have the sale (funds), said Ranck. In response, Ranck, Lauffer, and Myers worked to create the New Holland Youth Livestock Exposition, which will begin with weigh-in on Thursday, Oct. 1. Shows and the livestock sale will be held on Friday,

Oct. 2. Ranck and Lauffer will cochair the sheep and goat shows, and Myers will chair the swine show. All events will take place in tents located at the New Holland Sales Stables parking lot, 101 W. Fulton St., New Holland. This is the same location the New Holland Farmers Fair livestock show has been held for several years, but the event is in no way affiliated with the New Holland Farmers Fair. Weigh-ins for all animals will be held at the tents from 4 to 8 p.m. on Oct. 1. On Oct. 2 at 9 a.m., the market swine show will be held. The market lamb show will begin at noon. The goat show will be held at 3 p.m., followed by the livestock sale at 6:30 p.m. Cleanup will commence immediately following the livestock sale. Ranck reported that the trio had discussed the possibility of holding a show in late May and in June, they researched costs and assessed the availability of resources. “By the end See Livestock Exposition pg 4

third- through sixth-grade students, who usually wear youth sizes 10 through 16. Financial donations for the giveaway will also be accepted. Blankets and toiletries will also be available. Shoes and boots will mostly be provided by Anchored Ministries; however, if area residents wish to donate new and gently used winter boots, CrossNet will be happy to accept them. In August, CrossNet gave away more than 450 backpacks filled with school supplies. “We partnered with Anchored for the backpack giveaway as well, said Ker-

stetter, who added that Anchored parks its clothing trailer outside the youth center during each community meal as well. “The community meal is happening as a drivethrough, said Kerstetter, who noted that meals are held on the fourth Monday of each month, with the next one scheduled for Sept. 28 from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. “This past month, we (provided) 312 meals, said Kerstetter, who noted that in July, 375 meals were given away. “In 2019, we gave away 270 coats, said Lisa Kerstetter, director of marketing and events with CrossNet Ministries of New Holland. CrossNet will accept new and gently used coats for children at its offices at 123 W. Franklin St., New Holland, through Thursday, Oct. 8. The best hours to donate are Mondays through Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Fridays from 9 a.m. to noon. Donors who bring a brand-new coat to contribute to the drive will be entered to win a $50 gift card. The gift card drawing will be held following the end of the drive. This year, CrossNet will again partner with Anchored Ministries, formerly Anchored by Grace. The coat giveaway will be held at the CrossNet Youth Center, 110 W. Franklin St., New Holland, on Monday, Oct. 12, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. In addition to gently used or new winter coats, the distribution will include hats, gloves, scarves, boots, toiletries, and blankets. The event is traditionally held on Columbus Day since ELANCO School District students have the day off from school and can come along to try on coats. It serves infants through seniors in high school within the school district whose families participate in free and reduced-cost lunch programs or are affected by COVID-19 restrictions. Proof of residency, such as a utility bill, will be required. To comply with COVID-19 guidelines, the number of people picking up coats at one time will be limited. Family groups will be asked to stay together, and social distancing will be observed. Anyone age 3 and up who enters the building is required to wear a mask. As in the past, Kerstetter noted that there is a special need for certain sizes of coats - specifically for
