Elizabethtown Historical Society, 57 S. Poplar St., Elizabethtown, will host a program on Tuesday, April 16, at 7 p.m. John Ziats and Jeannie Dunaway, of Middletown Historical Society, will present “Remembering the Nuclear Plant Accident 40 Years Later.” On March 28, 1979, a partial meltdown of a nuclear reactor occurred at Three Mile Island (TMI). The presentation will discuss the accident and its impact on Elizabethtown, located less than 10 miles from the facility. Attendees will be encouraged to share their memories, photos and memorabilia related to the accident at TMI. The public is invited. Refreshments will be served. SPRING CONCERT

600 E. High St., will present its annual spring band concert on Thursday, April 11, at 7 p.m. in the school’s auditorium. The event is free and open to the public. The jazz band will perform “Sing, Sing, Sing - Part 1,” “Blue Moon,” “Pure Imagination,” “When I Fall in Love,” and “Hit the Bricks.” The concert band will perform “Ignition,” “In Heaven’s Air,” “Defying Gravity,” “Beauty and the Beast,” and “Rephrygeration,” with student conductor Jared Wolf featured on the final piece. Both bands are under the direction of Steven Barraclough. HUMMINGBIRD TALK

The Elizabeth Hughes Society will meet at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 398 N. Locust St., Elizabethtown, on Monday, April 22, at 7:30 p.m. Sandy Lockerman will present “Hummingbirds: Flying Jewels.” Lockerman is a trained and federally licensed bird bander and field ornithologist with more than 25 years of experience. Pinnacle Cup Golf Event To Benefit Local Groups The 18th annual Pinnacle Cup Team Match Play Tournament will take place on Monday, June 10, at the Royal Manchester Golf Links, 5700 Board Road, Mount Wolf. In the past 17 years, more than 500 players from nine states have played in the event, which has raised more than $75,000 for the GEARS Camp Ladybug Summer Program and Hershey’s Children’s Miracle Network. The two groups have been the golf tournament’s main beneficiaries. “A match play tournament is very unusual, especially involving a charity event,” explained tournament

director Clair Dale Treese. “In match play, every hole is important. The players like that ... they have to make a shot for their team. But by using a scramble method of play, some of the pressure is taken off the individual knowing they have a partner. We stress this is a friendly competition, but there is still an element of ‘butterflies’ when you really need to make a good golf shot.” Teams are paired based on their combined handicaps and indexed according to the United States Golf Association (USGA) rating of the course. Elizabethtown Area Communities That Care (EACTC) will offer three presentation times for the public to gain knowledge about the movement to become “Trauma Informed.” The presentations will take place on Tuesday, April 16, at noon, 1:15 p.m., and 6:30 p.m. in the training room at Community Place on Washington, which is located at 61 E. Washington St., Elizabethtown. The presentations will be 30 minutes in length, and attendees need only attend one. The presentations are being held in conjunction with the free naloxone trainings in the same location at 11 a.m., 2 p.m., and 5:30 p.m. Event organizers noted that there has been a growing interest locally and across the country about the impact of trauma across an individual’s life span and the importance of taking a See EACTC pg 10

“We had 500 attendees last year and are hoping that number is higher this year,” said program support liaison Linda Swisher, speaking about the 26th annual Lancaster-Lebanon IU 13 Education Conference scheduled for Tuesday, June 18, at LampeterStrasburg High School, 1600 Book Road, Lancaster. In order for the conference to serve a broad range of people, an equally wide-ranging list of topics will be addressed in morning and afternoon breakout sessions. A sampling of subjects includes drug and alcohol prevention and current drug

trends; anger management for adolescents; mindfulness; eating disorders, specifically anorexia; how to help bereaved students; special education law; diversity; helping students with anxiety; planning for retirement; and effectively managing language barriers. There will also be classes on literacy, behavior, math, autism, technology, and preschool/Early Intervention. “Two sessions that we are very excited about this year are the sessions on Phenomenal Science Instruction and Stopping the Bleed,” Swisher remarked. “The Science Instruction session is the first time we have offered a STEM-related topic, and the Stop the Bleed session is a national See Education Conference

The NiVan people of Vanuatu, located in the interior jungle regions of a tiny South Pacific island, are one of the groups supported by Friends In Action International (FIA), which has a headquarters located between Elizabethtown and Middletown. FIA supports mission work in areas of limited infrastructure by using construction projects to communicate the Gospel. Last year, FIA hosted nearly 75 volunteers who served as “blue collar missionaries.” Because FIA partners with trained missionaries already on the ground, volunteers offer their life experiences and construction skills to
