FIA Offers Opportunity To Support Relief Efforts

Selin, a NiVan mother, and her children search for food in their village in the South Pacific island country of Vanuatu. The country was devastated by a recent cyclone, and Friends in Action is offering southcentral Pennsylvania residents an opportunity to support cyclone relief efforts.
Members of the Plain community are working with Mennonite Disaster Service to produce masks for health care workers and others in the county in need. The effort produced more than 20,000 masks in its first week.
While many local residents may be feeling the effects of staying home due to COVID-19 restrictions, Friends in Action (FIA), a nonprofit
headquartered in Middletown, is offering an opportunity to have a global impact. Since 1992, FIA has used infrastructure projects as a platform to See FIA pg 3

The Waldorf classroom experience is designed to build strong relationships, enhance social and emotional learning, and create community bonds through seasonal events, festivals, assemblies, plays, and more. According to director of admissions and marketing Michelle Wann, the transition to at-home learning required some outside-the-box thinking. “It’s nothing short of extraordinary what our teachers were able to do so quickly. Taking a school that doesn’t use any technology in the classroom - no whiteboards, tablets, or computers - and transforming that in two weeks’ time in a way that upholds the beauty and richness of a Waldorf curriculum at home was no small feat,” she said. The school’s distance learning program is called SWS Connected Learning. While teachers use common platforms like Google Classroom and Zoom, the content is focused on the whole child to ensure that his or her well-being is top priority. Many of the classes start with a live or recorded song and exercise to get students ready to engage in learning. Lessons are aimed at Susquehanna Waldorf School first-grader Aila Rose teaching the children with limited screen time, recently celebrated her birthday with her class at home. At Susquehanna Waldorf School (SWS), teachers and administrators are working to bring Waldorf education’s multisensory, multi-faceted, human-centered curriculum to students who are no longer in classrooms.
