hanks to a collaboration between community partners, there’s a new, free way to make music in Columbia.

Members of Susquehanna River Creative Conspiracy (SRCC) have teamed up with Music for Everyone to bring a public piano to Coffee and Cream, 101 N. Front St., Columbia.

The partnership began after SRCC founder and president Anthony “TJ” Carrozza struck up a conversation with Music for Everyone founder John Gerdy. Both nonprofits share a common vision: using the arts to transform lives and strengthen communities.

One of Music for Everyone’s initiatives is Keys for the City, a program that places free-for-community-use pianos - decorated with

unique artwork - in public spaces throughout downtown Lancaster.

Carrozza thought Columbia could benefit from a piano, so he met with Music for Everyone executives, who agreed. He just needed

a spot to place the piano and an artist to paint it.

“I ride my bike across here every day,” Carrozza said, gesturing to the road outside Coffee and Cream.

“I live in Marietta, and our venue

When people drive across a bridge that crosses a tributary of Kreutz Creek in Hellam Township, they are honoring the service and sacrifice of a local veteran.

On Oct. 25, state Rep. Joe D’Orsie hosted a ceremony to officially designate the spot as the Roger Lee Fraker Memorial Bridge.

The bridge, located at 5657 Lincoln Highway East in York, bears the name of the Marine private first class., who served in

“It’s important to honor our veterans,” said Phil Lehman, describing the sentiment behind Wreaths Across America. “It’s important to take care of them, and this is an easy way to do that.”

Lehman invites community members to participate in the program, which places wreaths on graves of veterans in cemeteries nationwide. Locally, Wreaths Across America will be held on Saturday, Dec. 13, beginning at noon at Fairview Cemetery, 600 Hellam St., Wrightsville.

“We will start with a ceremony that will go for about half an hour,” Lehman said. “We honor all of the branches of the services.”

Landon Mak, a local student, will sing the national anthem, and first responders will also be honored with wreaths.

After the ceremony, people will pick up wreaths to place on graves in Fairview Cemetery, Union Cemetery and Mount Pisgah Cemetery.

Wreaths Across America is a national nonprofit organization. The idea for the tribute began as a seed that was planted when Morrill Worcester, a 12-year-old paperboy for the Bangor Maine Daily News, won a trip to Washington, D.C. Arlington National Cemetery made a lasting impression on Morrill, who later became the owner of Worcester Wreath Company. In 1992, with a surplus of wreaths near the end of the holiday season, he remembered visiting Arlington as a boy and arranged for wreaths to be placed in the cemetery. The idea

became a nationwide effort in 2005, when a photo of wreath-adorned stones at the cemetery spawned interest from people across the country wanting to participate in similar tributes locally. Today, the tradition continues annually at Arlington as well as more than 5,200 locations throughout the country.

People can sponsor a wreath for a family member, a friend, a neighbor or anyone else who is a veteran, Lehman said.

Lehman, a veteran who served in the Navy Seabees, brought the program to Wrightsville in 2022. He said the response from the community to the initiative has been very positive.

is interested in participating to come to the Dec. 13 event, noting that youths are especially encouraged to attend.

“Youth groups, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, all the young people are invited to come,” Lehman said.

“It’s important they understand what these veterans did for us and for the younger generation to understand what this is all about.”

We encourage local nonprofit groups, schools, churches, and others to submit news releases. Dated articles, highlighting local activities and events, and undated articles of general interest are used as space allows. Related photographs of good quality, with complete identification, are encouraged.

“We have quite a few people who come for the ceremony,” he said. “People want to honor our veterans, and they understand why these wreaths are important.”

He invites anyone who

Close to 800 veterans rest in Fairview Cemetery, he said. While not all will have a wreath placed at their grave, he’s hoping to honor as many as possible.

When Lehman formed the idea to bring Wreaths Across America to Wrightsville, one of the first people

he recruited was Arthur Faircloth, who represents Historic Wrightsvile. Faircloth, an Army veteran, takes care of the wreaths at Union Cemetery.

Order forms for wreaths may be picked up at several locations in Wrightsville, including the post office, 307 Hellam St. Community

Twigs & Digs: Late Fall Foraging Walk will be held on Sunday, Dec. 7, from 1 to 3 p.m. The program will focus on wild foods, local plants and ecology, alternative uses for plants through wildcrafting and medicine, and ethical foraging. Beginners and experienced

foragers are welcome. Winter Plant Identification will take place on Saturday, Dec. 13, from 12:30 to 3 p.m. Attendees will learn about twig, bud, bark, and evergreen characteristics, as well as clues for identifying desiccated specimens.

members are encouraged to submit their orders as soon as possible for this year, Lehman said, noting that if orders come in late, they will be included in next year’s program. Help is also needed to remove the wreaths after the holiday season. People are invited to gather in Fairview Cemetery on Saturday, Jan. 10, 2026, beginning at 11 a.m. to help with that project.

Handicapped-accessible parking will be available on the west side of Fairview Cemetery, directly off of Seventh Street.

Holiday Spirit Will Fill Maytown Square

For centuries, people have gathered in the Maytown Square for meetings, events, fellowship and community connection. That tradition will continue on Saturday, Nov. 29, when the Maytown Civic Association hosts a Square Lighting.

The celebration will begin at 4:30 p.m. in front of the Maytown Historical Society, 4 W. High St.

“Free hot cocoa and cookies will be served during a time of Christmas caroling led by the Donegal High School Rhythm Singers and a brief Christmas message offered by pastor Dan Blank of Reich’s EC Church,” said Cindy Wivell, admissions manager of Paramount Senior Living and current president of the Maytown Civic Association. “At 5:15 p.m., traffic through the Maytown Square will be halted while the crowd is led to the center square for a ceremonious countdown to the Square Lighting. The evening will culminate with the singing of ‘Silent Night.’”

A Nativity scene will also be featured at the event,

enhancing a tradition that began almost 80 years ago.

In about 1948, after Maytown resident and Maytown Church of God elder Richard Gallo returned from World War II, he built a Nativity for the square.

“It was presumedly displayed every Christmas season until it became in disrepair,” Wivell said.

“While all the other figures of the Nativity scene were replaced over the years, the stable, originally made out of tobacco lath, remained on display each year.

Unfortunately, the original stable went missing during the offseason, leaving the Nativity without a stable in 2023.”

Maytown is known for keeping traditions alive, she said, so in December 2024, a concerned resident built a new one.

“Local Constable Paul Castline took it upon himself to build a replica stable and deliver it before Christmas Day so Mary, Joseph and Baby Jesus had shelter before His day of celebration,” Wivell related.

“Maytown is also known for residents working together for a good cause, so Ed Jones, father to Tom

Jones, state representative, and volunteer caretaker of the Maytown Square, has volunteered to stain and protect the stable and store it for safekeeping during the offseason.”

Ed is no stranger to square improvements, she noted, adding that he regularly mows the grass, pulls the weeds and keeps the monuments and fencing freshly painted.

“He kept the original stable in good repair and had recently upgraded the stable

the Weapons Platoon of K Company, 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Division during the Vietnam War.

“We are dedicating this bridge as a permanent tribute to the courage and sacrifice of Marine Pfc. Roger Lee Fraker, who served with honor in the Vietnam War,” said D’Orsie, who represents the 47th District. “His service represents a generation that answered the call in a time of great uncertainty,

often without recognition, but never without valor.”

A native of Hellam and a 1967 graduate of Eastern High School, Fraker was killed in action on Aug. 27, 1968, at the age of 19.

“He fought not for personal glory, nor solely for America’s freedom, but in the hope of securing freedom for others,” D’Orsie shared. “May every person who crosses this bridge remember his sacrifice, and

may his legacy inspire us to live with courage and a lasting commitment to the ideals of liberty and service beyond ourselves.”

The dedication ceremony was attended by Fraker’s family members, as well as military personnel and community leaders. Speakers included State Rep. Wendy Fink; Col. Robert S. Noren of the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs; County Commissioner Julie Wheeler; and Beverly Vaughn, Fraker’s sister.

“Roger was a character. He was fun loving,” Vaughn shared. “He was the middle child. I don’t know if you

want to say middle child syndrome, but he had no fear. He was born to be a Marine, and he lived the part well.”

While she noted that her family will never forget their loss, she also appreciates the community’s commitment to honoring her brother.

“It’s sadness from that day in August of 1968, but to this day, the joy, the tears of joy, the happiness, the love, the support, family, friends, community - we couldn’t ask for any more,” she said.

Marine veteran Rick Olvitt described his friend as the quintessential Marine.

“He loved and lived life to the fullest,” Olvitt remarked. “Roger had a competitive

spirit, always looking for the next challenge.”

Among Fraker’s military honors are the Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Marine Corps Presidential Unit Citation, Vietnam Military Merit, Good Conduct and the Vietnam Gallantry Cross.

Olvitt was instrumental in bringing the bridge dedication to fruition. He contacted D’Orsie’s district office to begin the process of officially naming the bridge in his friend’s honor.

“The bridge is located across from the Fraker family

property, making it a particularly fitting location to memorialize Roger’s service and sacrifice,” D’Orsie commented. “Rick had previously made a promise to the Fraker family that he would not let Roger be forgotten.”

Olvitt had previously spearheaded a tree dedication in Fraker’s honor at Eastern York High School years prior.

“Roger was the first person from Eastern High School to lose his life in the Vietnam War, a loss that deeply affected Rick, a fellow Eastern York High School grad,” D’Orsie said. “Rick was inspired to continue to honor his friend’s legacy.”

prior to it going missing in 2023,” Wivell said.

For many years, members of the American

Legion Auxiliary Unit 809, led by Maytown native Sara Gutshall, oversaw the maintenance of the square. The auxiliary also provides Wreaths Across America, which are displayed each Christmas on the square, and the group purchases annuals each spring for local Boy Scout Troop 53 to plant.

This year’s Square Lighting will be a bittersweet one. Gutshall passed away in August at the age of 86.

“It is important to note that Gutshall, a passionate supporter of the military and tradition, worked hard to ensure that the Maytown Center Square was registered as a historical site, and it remains as such today,” Wivell said.

people will come out for a community celebration to kick off the holiday season.

“Special moments, like Christmas caroling in the center square and watching the Nativity and tree being illuminated, can become a treasured memory for young and old alike,” Wivell said. “Maytown is a town rooted in history and tradition and without events like this, our busy lives can take over and cause us to miss opportuni-

While the square has been decorated for the holidays for many years, this will be the second year that the Maytown Civic Association has hosted an event to include a gathering of the community to witness the illumination of the square.

“Maytown has a rich history of close family ties and tradition,” Wivell said. “It’s important to go the extra mile to keep the traditions alive for our community today to enjoy what generations before us put into place for their own enjoyment.”

A new decoration will be added to the square this year, said Maytown resident Linda Good. Local farmer Doug Witman has created a beautiful 10-foot Christmas light tree, she explained.

is on Lancaster Avenue, so I pass this all the time, and as soon as Music for Everyone asked me to find a spot, it just popped into my head.”

The café’s owner agreed, offering to host the piano on the covered porch and possibly move it indoors for year-round music.

Carrozza knew about Music for Everyone’s Keys for the City program, but through his conversations with the organization, he realized the nonprofit does much more for the community.

“Keys for the City is one of our most forward-facing initiatives, but we give out musical instruments to all 16 school districts in the county,” shared Deb Rohrer, Music for Everyone’s executive director. “We’ve given nearly $120,000 worth of instruments to the Columbia School District.”

As she talked with Carrozza, she realized bringing a piano to Columbia was the perfect way to spotlight the work Music for Everyone does.

She noted that at any time the organization might have upwards of 20 donated pianos waiting in storage for a location in the community.

She tasked Carrozza with

not only finding the location for the piano, but also securing an artist to paint it. He didn’t have to look far, finding the perfect person in Diane Bell, one of the founders of SRCC and the art director of the organization.

She had never painted a piano before, but she was up to the challenge.

She wanted to focus on mandalas, a design that she says brings her comfort in the repetitive motion of painting a series of dots, and she started out with a much larger vision for her piece, but she didn’t like the look.

“This was not planned out,” she said, pointing to the piano, now covered in a colorful design. “I had very little idea when I put the brush to the piano how it was going to turn out. It just sort of came together as it is.”

She incorporated dots all over the instrument and created a design that mimics jewelry dripping down over the piano, visible even when the lid is closed. She also painted a design around the edge that is a digital representation of music, showing the sound levels on a mixer.

She worked on the piano day and night, noting, “I stopped counting the time

after I put 100 hours in.”

It was a labor of love for Bell, and she’s happy with the results. So are Rohrer and Carrozza, and the project has been met with positive response from the community. Carrozza is already planning to bring another Music for Everyone piano to Columbia Crossing River Trails Center.

Soon after the piano was installed at Coffee and Cream earlier this fall, a group gathered for an open mic night.

“It was just packed with musicians and local com -

munity members,” Carrozza recalled. “Everyone just came together and had fun.”

That’s the goal of every piano Music for Everyone places, Rohrer said.

“Music is a universal language,” she stated. “People are so polarized sometimes, but music brings us all together. It’s all about building community.”
