Unwrapping Christmas Past Tri-County Heritage Library Features Holiday Display BY FRANCINE FULTON

ven though Dec. 25 has passed, there is still time to learn about Christmas past through a visit to the Tri-County Heritage Library, which opened at new location this past summer at 219 Mill Road, Morgantown, next to Masthof Press and Bookstore. In addition to historical documents, artwork, photographs, newspapers and other artifacts relating to the history of Berks, Chester and Lancaster counties, the library is currently featuring Christmas items on display, including old postcards and ornaments. The Animal Rescue League (ARL) of Berks County presented kitten yoga on Dec. 20 at the Exeter Community Library. During the program, adoptable kittens were able to roam and interact with the participants. The fundraising event was designed to promote the kittens’ social skills and possibly introduce them to their potential forever families. Attendees paid a registration fee to take part in the class, with all proceeds benefiting
the ARL. The class was presented by instructor Liz Bentz, who volunteered her time to lead the class. “I have done research on animal-assisted therapy. When you pet an animal, the animal and the human being get calm at the same time. It benefits both of them,” Bentz said. “I am an occupational therapist, and I got my doctorate in OT and I studied the use of animals in occupational therapy. Turn off the engine if the car will be idling for more than a minute. Modern engines do not need to be warmed up for more than 30 to 60 seconds, even when the weather is cold. Driving will warm up the car faster than idling while parked, provided the car is driven moderately until the temperature gauge shows the car has reached the right temperature. Consider whether to use air conditioning or put the windows down.

During select HCVHA events at Historic Joanna Furnace, photos from the library are displayed. “We do that periodically at our events at Joanna; we bring over a sampling of some of the photos and put them in a binder and people flip through to identify them,” Zerr stated. “We have had some success with that.” The postcards, displayed behind protective glass, feature Christmas scenes, such as Santa and his sleigh, snow y landscapes and Christmas greenery. “The quality of them is amazing. Some of these old antique postcards are like artwork,” Zerr said, noting that the display is especially significant since the art of writing postcards has diminished in recent years. A f ter the C hr istmas display comes down, new items will be put into place. “We have some really neat valentines that we will pull out in February,” Zerr said. “One of my goals with this new location is that every quarter of the year we will have different items on display.”

The Christmas ornaments on display show how they changed through the years.” Visitors will also see a vintage Santa Claus suit on display. “ The Santa suit is a recent generous donation by Bev Minjock,” Zerr noted. “It was used at the Odd Fellows Hall in Morgantown.” T here are also many holiday postcards featured, which are par t of the McCord collection. “The McCords were from Elverson; they were photographers,” Zerr explained. “We have a huge collection of their photography in our library.” Visitors are encouraged to try to identify some of the faces that are featured in the photographs. “You could go to their studio in Elverson and have your family photo taken. However, it seems like they kept copies of every photo they took,” said Zerr. “We would love people to look at these McCord photos of people from Elverson and Morgantown to help us identify them.”

Alyssa Budock, ARL media and communications manager, explained that about eight kittens were on hand for the class, which was sponsored by the Friends of the ARL. “Some of the kittens are available for adoption, and some are pre-adopted,” she noted. “Some are here for a little extra socialization because they are not ready to be adopted yet but will be soon.” T he kittens on hand for yoga currently reside with foster families until their forever homes can be found. Yoga class attendees were given small cat toys to encourage the kittens to visit and play with them. “The fosters will bring them and help monitor them while they are here,” Budock noted. “We let (the kittens) out to run around if they are interested. Some of them are a little more shy because there are too many people. People can hold them and give them some socialization as well.” One foster on hand at the event was Pam Zebrine, who brought along her foster kitten, Churu. “Fostering is the best,” Zebrine said. “There is a niche for everyone. County to Replace Chesco Connect Buses T h e C h e s te r C o u n t y Department of Community Transit has begun replacing existing gasoline-powered Chesco Connect buses with new vehicles powered by propane. According to Chester County CEO David Byerman, the move to new vehicles aligns with key priorities in the county’s Climate Action Plan and Strategic Plan. He noted t h at p ro p a ne - p o we re d vehicles are considered a cost-effective and environmentally friendly option, offer ing lower operating costs and emission reductions. According to Todd Mouw, executive vice president of ROUSH CleanTech, developer of the Chesco Connect buses’ technology, the new vehicles will reduce
air pollution from sulfur oxide, nitro gen oxide, and carbon dioxide. In addition, propane vehicles can achieve first-year fuel and maintenance savings of approximately $20,000 per vehicle. Chester County has placed seven new propane buses into ser vice already, with another nine expected to join the fleet in February 2026. Chesco Connect is the c o u n t y ’s c o m m u n i t y t ra n s i t p ro g ra m , s p e cializing in door-to-door s h a re d r i d e t ra n s p o rtation for residents of C hes ter Co unt y. More than 141,000 trips were provided to county residents during the 2024-25 fiscal year, with nearly 1.8 million service miles traveled.
