For seven years, Jenna Love has been motivating, encouraging and educating students in the Elizabethtown Area School District. Now the Elizabethtown Area Middle School sixth-grade social studies teacher has been recognized for her efforts. Love competed in the 2026 Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year awards. And while she did not take home the top honor, she did receive the Keystone Award of Excellence as one of 12 statewide

finalists during a ceremony on Dec. 8. Love was nominated for Teacher of the Year by a paraprofessional in her school who had spent time working with her in her classroom. She learned of the nomination in October of 2024, and after the third round of the competition, she discovered she was a finalist when an announcement was made by the governor’s office in May of 2025. “When I found out I was a finalist, I was thrilled, shocked and honored, all at once,” Love recalled. It’s fitting that the next fundraiser for the Leo’s Helping Paws nonprofit group will be held on Valentine’s Day. That’s emblematic of the love Kathy Styer and Beth Buchter have for dogs. Styer and Buchter co-founded Leo’s Helping Paws in July 2014. The pair were volunteers for another rescue organization before electing to branch out on their own. “At that time, we were seeing a lot of need,” said Styer, who is the president. “There were more rescues that were being formed, and the need for vet care was the No. 1 issue with all the dogs that they would rescue, and it’s costly. In order to get them adopted, first they had to be vetted, because that’s protocol for a rescue.” Leo’s Helping Paws’ mission is to provide financial assistance for veterinary care to nonprofit all-volunteer dog rescue groups in Pennsylvania and neighboring states. The organization, made up of 40 volunteers, has also assisted outfits in Ohio, Ne w York , Mar yland, Ne w Jersey, West Virginia, Virginia, Connecticut, and Delaware. Anyone wishing to donate, volunteer, or apply for a grant can go to www.leoshelpingpaws.org. Leo’s Helping Paws, based in Lancaster city, has awarded an average of more than 80 grants per year totaling approximately $780,000 in its existence. “I am a big dog lover,” said Buchter, who is the treasurer. “I’ve always had compassion for animals. It’s just in me. It’s my nurturing instinct.”

for flooded basement assistance. The storm also impacted the Donegal Fish & Conservation Association (DFCA), which has a trout nursery along Pinkerton Road in East Donegal Township, resulting in a severely eroded entrance to the nursery and leading to a wall collapse. The week of the flood, DFCA was scheduled to receive its allotment of fingerling trout from the PA Fish & Boat Commission, Cooperative Trout Division, but members of the association worried delivery would not be possible under the damaged conditions. “With the rental of a skid loader with bucket and several ton of stone delivered, members of the DFCA worked feverishly to repair the entrance as well as the concrete block raceway wall that had collapsed during the flood so that fingerling trout could be delivered,” shared Dave Eichler, assisting nursery manager, who noted that the cost to rent the skid loader and purchase the stone was $1,000. “Thankfully, fingerling trout were delivered the next week, are currently being fed, are growing in size and will be ready to be stocked this coming spring.” Initially, the DFCA had to use proceeds it acquired from the March 2025 Spring Sports Show to repair the flood damage. Then, the team behind the Taste of Mount Joy Cruisin’ Cuisine stepped in to help, donating $1,500 in proceeds from the July community event to the DFCA in late November. “Funds of the DFCA are reserved initially to assist in paying for trout feed, insurance, electric fees and lease of the property,” Eichler said. “So, the $1,500 donation assisted in replenishing these funds.” Ferne Silberman, representing the Taste of Mount Joy committee, noted that a recipient of the car show funds had not been identified before the event. “When the flooding occurred and we knew Donegal Fish & Conservation would need funds, the decision was made,” she said, noting that the other recipients of the funds from the car show were Friends of Donegal, The Mount Joy Rotary Club, The Lions Club and the Kiwanis Club of Norlanco-Rheems. “I was pleasantly shocked and grateful, grateful in that relief was going to come in and help us recover,” Eichler said of learning the group wanted to support DFCA this way. “This is so nice of them to want to do this.” The DFCA was established in 1965 by Ken Depoe, who passed away in May of 2025. He was a 40-year teacher for the Donegal School District. “Aside from his industrial arts teaching and basketball coaching duties at Donegal High School, he

began a fly-tying club in which his students tried their newly created flies in catching trout in nearby Donegal Creek,” Eichler remarked. “Today, the DFCA continues the legacy and perpetuity of Ken Depoe in raising and stocking more than

3,500 trout annually in the Donegal Creek and surrounding watersheds.” Along with Eichler, DFCA officers include president Chris Brandt, vice president Charlie Hower, secretary Andy Gladfelter, treasurer Halley See Flood pg 3

(Lexie) Tierney and nursery manager Jeremy Henry. The DFCA’s annual budget includes $4,000 in fish food alone. “The $1,500 donation from the Taste of Mount Joy car show to the DFCA is definitely appreciated,” Eichler said. “As a nonprofit, the DFCA relies on donations, memberships and proceeds from its annual Spring Sports Show to continue its purpose. As a PA Fish & Boat Commission Cooperative Trout Nursery, the mission of the DFCA aids in the preservation and care of the Donegal Creek and raises, rears and stocks trout in the Donegal Creek and other

Teaching from pg 1 share their ideas or ask a question that they can barely raise their hand and stay seated - these are the moments that I live for as an educator.” When she’s not teaching, Love, who lives in Elizabethtown, enjoys going for walks and hikes on local trails with her husband and their yellow Labrador. She also enjoys movie nights and is pursuing a second master’s degree, so a lot of her free time is spent on her graduate school work. Love said it was an honor not only to be nominated for Teacher of the Year, but also to compete against worthy peers. “While I was recognized for this award, I don’t see it as solely mine,” she said. “It is a testament to all of the people in my life who have helped to shape me as an educator: my family, my friends, the incredible instructional coaches who have pushed me to grow and lead, and the colleagues who have become friends and mentors to me. This honor and recognition is theirs, too, and I am incredibly grateful for them.” She also expressed thanks to her students, both past and present, for continuing to cheer her on and believe in her during the process. She truly loves what she does for a living, and she hopes others will consider becoming teachers. “To encourage someone to

pursue teaching as a career, I would tell them that the job they have in mind is more than just a career; it is a calling,” she said. “As a teacher, you get to make magic in your classroom with your students and leave each day with the knowledge that you are actively shaping and impacting the future.” That’s what makes teaching such a special profession, she said. “While the work of educators can be challenging, it is so worth it,” she stated. “Ultimately, when you close that classroom door, lives are changed, dreams are chased, and purposes are found - both for your students and for you as their teacher.” She emphasized that she does not take her job lightly, focusing on not only preparing her students for the future but also recognizing that the kids are the future. “The days when I can see their curiosity blossom, their kindness shine and catch a glimpse of the feeling that they can change the world in their eyes are what keep me motivated as an educator,” she said. “I consider the work that educators across our state do to be both hard work and heart work, and ultimately, it is the students and the powerful moments of joy, learning and connection that continue to motivate me and foster my passion for education.”

“I decided to try and get as far as I could in the process to honor and thank the person who nominated me, but I truly wasn’t sure how far I would get.” When the announcement was made that she had reached the finalist stage, she was overcome with emotion and could not wait to share it with her family, friends and students. “I can remember my assistant principal covering my classroom for a few minutes so I could go to the office and call my family,” she said. “It was a truly amazing moment that felt almost like a movie.” Love grew up in Delaware, but she spent a lot of time visiting her grandparents who lived in Lancaster County. “I loved the rolling hills and farmland and decided to settle here after attending Elizabethtown College for my undergraduate degree,” she said. She spent the first two years of her teaching career at Bear Creek Intermediate School, where she taught English language arts and social studies, before moving to the middle school. “One of the things I love about teaching is seeing my students light up and be excited about learning and about history,” she commented. “There are moments where students are so excited to

Then, they will vote for their favorite drink, appetizer, entrée, dessert and the best of show.” One person will also be randomly selected to receive two tickets to the 2027 Taste of Western Lancaster County, he said. “All this takes place while enjoying live music, meeting up with friends and meeting new people,” Allen commented. This is the 18th year for the event, which began through a partnership between the library and the Rotary Club of Elizabethtown. “One main reason for starting the event was to raise money for the library and Rotary Club,” Allen explained. “Since people enjoy food, drink and a night out, it was a simple step to selecting a tasting event. This also allowed for the ability to ensure local restaurants, breweries, wineries and other vendors could receive greater visibility in the community.” The timing of the event - always the first Friday in February - was intentional, since this is often a slow time for both businesses and the library. “All money raised through ticket sales and sponsorships is split
