Leo’s Helping Paws Is All About the Dogs BY GEORGE DEIBEL
It’s fitting that the next fundraiser for the Leo’s Helping Paws nonprofit group will be held on Valentine’s Day. That’s emblematic of the love Kathy Styer and Beth Buchter have for dogs. Styer and Buchter co-founded Leo’s Helping Paws in July 2014. The pair were volunteers for another rescue organization before electing to branch out on their own. “At that time, we were seeing a lot of need,” said Styer, who is the president. “There were more rescues that were being formed, and the need for vet care was the No. 1 issue with all the dogs that they would rescue, and it’s costly. In order to get them adopted, first they had to be vetted, because that’s protocol for a rescue.” Leo’s Helping Paws’ mission is to provide financial assistance for veterinary care to nonprofit all-volunteer dog rescue groups in Pennsylvania and neighboring states. The organization, made up of 40 volunteers, has also assisted outfits in Ohio, Ne w York , Mar yland, Ne w Jersey, West Virginia, Virginia, Connecticut, and Delaware. Anyone wishing to donate, volunteer, or apply for a grant can go to www.leoshelpingpaws.org. Leo’s Helping Paws, based in Lancaster city, has awarded an average of more than 80 grants per year totaling approximately $780,000 in its existence. “I am a big dog lover,” said Buchter, who is the treasurer. “I’ve always had compassion for animals. The nonprofit is named after Leo, a tri-colored corgi that was adopted in 2009. “We’re just very passionate about rescue because there’s so many dogs out there that need homes,” said Styer. Styer said most of the dogs the organization helps are abandoned or come from a breeding facility. “Because of some switches in the laws, the breeders will reach out to rescues to take the dogs when they’re done breeding them,” she said. In October, there was a rescue in Delaware that rescued 61 dogs from a breeder facility. “We gave them $10,000 to treat every dog, to get their initial exams and all the bloodwork and things like that,” said Styer. “That was our

largest grant ever.” Styer and Buchter also aid dogs as a side project unrelated to Leo’s Helping Paws. “(Recently) Beth and I, we picked up two 7-monthold corgis that didn’t sell from a breeder in Honey Brook,” said Styer. Leo’s Helping Paws usually holds one fundraiser a month. One of its biggest is the annual bake sale. This year’s event will be Saturday, Feb. 14, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Ephrata Agway, 731 W. Main St. Hot dogs, snacks, and beverages will also be for sale. There will be chances to win prizes, as well. WellSpan Health Announces Appointment WellSpan Health has appointed Orie Chambers to the role of vice president for the health system as well as president of WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital. Briella is one of only two active female first responders within the organization. “Me and my dad have a really strong bond. We’re close,” said Briella. “Outside of firefighting, we do a lot of activities together, like softball. He’ll help me with my schoolwork if I need it. We’ll play video games together, and I’ll just talk to him.” “She’s 100% committed,” said Kirk. “Any time she can go (to the fire station) to train and learn, she jumps on it. She’s into it. I hope she stays that way, and I think she will.” Briella has her whole life ahead of her, and sometimes things change.
But it could be that this shared firefighting experience with her dad is laying the groundwork for a career and maybe even a lifestyle. “I’ve thought about being a flight nurse,” said Briella. “Basically, a flight nurse is someone who goes to accidents in a helicopter. The helicopters transport people to hospitals, where they can get more care. There are courses I can take in high school, and I want to get all of my qualifications.” “I’m very proud of Briella,” said Kirk. “She’s come a long way. She’s a very talented kid. I think it’s important to let your kids follow their dreams and to support them in any way you can. Anything you can do with your kids is important. You just don’t know what’s going to happen.”

Fourteen-year-old Briella Neidermyer is making her own way, forging her own path. Because his example is providing guiderails for his daughter’s journey, her father, Kirk Neidermyer, derives a lot of parental pride from that emerging independence. That he gets to share in her developmental experiences is a sheer delight. “I think doing this with Briella will make our relationship even stronger,” said Kirk. “We’ll have a bond in a different way. She’s my firstborn and only daughter. We get along. We respect each other. She listens and does what she’s told.” The bond that Kirk and Briella share is firefighting and community service. Kirk has been a volunteer firefighter with Garden Spot Fire Rescue, 339 E. Main St., New Holland, for 25 years, while Briella, a ninth-grader at ELANCO Online Virtual Academy, has officially been a probationary firefighter for about three months. But to say that Briella is following in her father’s footsteps might be selling her individuality a bit short. “My dad has always been one of the people I looked up to,” said Briella. “I’ve always watched him run out of the house and put on that blue light. I’m very, very proud of him because when he shows up, he shows out and does stuff on the scene.”
Briella spent parts of the last six summers attending a cadet camp designed for school-age youths interested in becoming first responders, learning about various pieces of firefighting apparatus, learning to roll hoses and engaging in firefighting techniques. Since becoming a probationary firefighter with Garden Spot Fire Rescue, she’s gone out on a number of calls, for about a half-dozen of which Kirk has been the driver of the fire engine. Because of her age, Briella is limited in the duties she can perform, so her main role has been to connect fire hydrants. “She can’t go inside (burning) buildings, and she can’t go on runs involving heart attacks and vehicular accidents,” said Kirk. “Right now, it’s all a learning experience. Her main thing now is fire hydrants. She’s a gofer. If someone needs help with something, she’s going to help them with it. When I drop her off at the firehouse, I know she’s in good hands. It’s kind of like a second family.” “I think it’s going really good,” said Briella. “When I go on calls, I get to the station, get on my gear, I get on the fire truck, and when we get there, we all have certain roles. I’ll start flowing water from a hydrant. I’m still learning - everyone is still learning. But if I have questions, I’ll go to (my dad) and ask him because I trust him.” “I want people to see me as confident and independent,” she added, “because when I show up, I do my best.”

ACYS is broken down into two age-related groups - the SaraSingers for children ages 6 to 10 and the Lyric Choir for Singers for older kids between ages 11 and 14. Children and their families are asked to register before the informational meetings at www .amadeuschorale.org. There are fees associated with participation in the programs. “(The singers) will learn that there are people all around the world who share the dreams they have,” said Bair. “Different languages don’t separate us. It’s a global perspective. We teach children that there are right ways to do things. We teach them how to do things properly so they can grow in confidence. That’s the kind of things we look at and celebrate as a win.” Par ticipating singers will rehearse for an hour each week. As the singers progress, the choirs will create recordings and music videos, perform publicly at about three or four concerts and festivals each year, collaborate with other groups of musical artists and embark on trips. “We give our kids a lot of expe-

riences,” said Bair. “I don’t believe in competitions. I only want to give my kids stories to tell of where they’re singing and who they’re singing for. I want the kids to have experiences to have lifetime stories to tell.” ACYS participation is open to all Lancaster County youths with an interest in singing. “I’d like to see all Lancaster County children come sing with me,” said Bair, a native of Lancaster County and a resident of East Lampeter Township. “We don’t have a maximum number. If we have a choir that gets too big, we’ll start a new one. We have two requirements: A child must sing in tune, and a child must show respect for every adult involved. That’s it.” Involvement with ACYS programs could instill a lifelong love of singing into maturing youths. Proceed with caution. “They are children who already know they love singing and their parents are willing to support them,” said Bair. “This is for kids and their families. It’s like the family is joining the organization together. These are people who want to invest in their children and get the type of high-quality music instruction you can’t get anywhere else. You can see the quality in the things we do.” “Parents can expect their chil-
dren will be elevated in their vocal etiquette,” added Bair. “They can expect their children will be in a safe environment. (The children) can be who they authentically are. The parents often form their own sub-group, like a club of parents.” Bair originally founded ACYS in Rochester, N.Y., in 1996. At the heights of its success, the program featured 140 singers and staged performances at numerous high-profile events. “We just sort of moved it here,” said Bair. “I’m really open to the opportunities here. We want to duplicate the joys of the stories, but the stories are going to be different here. These kids will be very much of the community, learning about it and being a part of it.”

of Lititz. “We want to work with businesses and make sure everyone has enough. It’s something that Sauder’s has been doing for years. The community supports us by buying our eggs. We look at it like, ‘From our nest to yours.’ We work with family farmers, and we distribute eggs to family.” Not only did Sauder’s Eggs’ generosity positively affect the community, it also had a ripple effect throughout the company. When the donation went public, it provided a morale boost to the companies’ 350 employees across Sauder’s four locations. “I had the honor of representing the company with the donation, and the people I spoke with were thrilled that we were reaching out to the community,” said Smith. “We got a lot of positive feedback. Seeing Sauder’s baby blue truck pull up to the nonprofits filled with eggs made people proud. People were really excited by it. It was a big buzz.” Sauder’s Eggs also supports the locale in other ways, through sponsorships and community events like the Easter Egg Run in Lititz and by serving breakfasts at local schools. In addition to the Lititz location, Sauder’s Eggs operates processing plants and
distribution centers in Schoeneck outside of Ephrata; in the Greenfield Corporate Complex in Conestoga Valley; and in Hampstead, Md. “We’re ver y active in the community,” said Smith. “We try to tie into the needs of the local communities where we have plants. One of our directives for employees in 2026 is to encourage volunteerism and spend more time in their communities. We want to make that part of our company culture.” Sauder’s Eggs was founded by Frank Sauder 80 years ago, and the family business is now headed by his great-grandson Mark Sauder. Working with about 120 farms of all sizes, located mainly in Pennsylvania, Sauder’s Eggs processes and distributes eggs in many of the states in the northeast. Sauder’s Eggs processes about 1.5 billion eggs each year. “It’s mostly family farms, mom-and-pop operations,” said Smith. “These aren’t large commercial farms. We pack up five skids, 10 skids of eggs, and we have trucks that take them all over the place. Our eggs are almost everywhere you go in the Northeast.”
Lecture on Christiana Resistance Set The Lititz Historical Foundation will present a lecture by Darlene Colón, who will discuss the Christiana Resistance, on Saturday, Jan. 17, at 1:30 p.m. The program will be held at the the Lititz Public Library, 651 Kissel Hill Road, Lititz. The Christiana Resistance, also known as the Christiana Riot, was the successful armed resistance
by escaped slaves and free blacks to a raid led by a federal marshal to recover four escaped slaves. The Resistance took place on Sept. 11, 1851, at the home of William Parker in Christiana. 2026 marks the 175th anniversary of this event. Colón is a Lancaster County historian and local author and

We wanted to get food in people’s hands immediately. It was important that we feed local people.” “We reached out to Lancaster Food Hub, Lebanon County Christian Ministries, and the rest went to Blessings of Hope,” said Smith. “We saw that these three organizations reach a lot of folks. We thought we could have a bigger impact with these hub-and-spoke organizations. We knew they could get them in people’s hands quickly. That was an important piece of this, that and the eggs were going to local people.” The 23,400 dozen eggs cost Sauder’s Eggs about $50,000 to donate and had a retail value of about $100,000. “Giving back is part of what we do,” said Smith, a resident
