THE FINEST Curating

Porthleven’s Customs House Gallery marks its 30th anniversary this year – a milestone that speaks to its enduring appeal.

Stroll along Harbour Road, out from the centre of this little Cornish fishing village, and you’ll eventually come to an oasis of calm. A place that celebrates the abundant talent found in this part of the world.

Established in 1995 by Bob Hood, the gallery has long been a cornerstone of Porthleven’s artistic scene. Today, under the stewardship of John and Louise Winterton, it continues to uphold its original ethos: to provide a thoughtfully curated space where fine art, textiles, jewellery, sculpture and glass are presented in harmony.

Walk through its doors, and you’ll immediately feel removed from the hubbub outside – free to appreciate the work before you without distraction. The pieces on display, carefully chosen by John and Louise, maintain a synergy that reflects their skill in bringing together a diverse array of artists under one roof.

The gallery’s history is interwoven with a thread of artistic continuity. After Bob Hood’s tenure, local artist Heather Howe took the helm, and although she eventually passed the baton 12 years ago to focus on her own painting, she still exhibits here. Since then, John and Louise have built upon this legacy, ensuring the gallery remains a welcoming space where both emerging and established artists can thrive. Their philosophy is simple but steadfast: to present high-quality, original art in a friendly and accessible environment. “We feel strongly

that each artist we represent should always have work on display, rather than being hidden in a cupboard for months on end between exhibitions,” says Louise. “So, our walls and plinths are aesthetically curated to offer the best possible opportunity for our artists to have their works seen. We consciously steer away from presenting ourselves as an intimidating space.”

Though the gallery’s coastal setting might suggest a dominance of seascapes, John and Louise have resisted such dictates. While maritime themes are present, the collection extends to landscapes and still life, the latter particularly popular of late. Across all these works, a consistent connection remains: an emphasis on originality, quality and a deep respect for the artists who make this gallery what it is.

The gallery also offers a bespoke framing service by appointment. Email framing@ thecustomshousegallery.co.uk for further info or to make an appointment.

Exploring

THE FUTURE

We engage with GreenGenUk to find out more about the benefits to be had from installing an air-source heat pump.

Thanks to increased incentives, air-source heat pumps are becoming a popular choice for reducing energy bills and cutting carbon emissions, so we caught up with Sophia, one of GreenGenUK’s Renewable Sales Specialists, to find out why they’re the perfect addition to homes in Cornwall.

How much space does an air source heat pump need?

You typically need one to two square metres of outdoor space. The key is ensuring the unit has good airflow and isn’t obstructed. With proper placement, they operate efficiently without taking up much room.

Are air source heat pumps efficient – even in freezing temperatures?

Heat pumps can extract warmth from the air, even when temperatures drop below freezing. For every unit of electricity they use, they typically generate three to four+ units of heat. This makes them incredibly cost-effective over time, helping to significantly lower energy bills.

Combining solar PV and battery storage is ideal for maximising efficiency. Solar panels generate renewable energy to power your heat pump, and a battery stores surplus electricity to use when the sun isn’t shining. It’s a fantastic way to reduce running costs and make your home even greener.

Are they noisy?

Most units produce around 40 to 50 decibels, which is comparable to the hum of a fridge or

a quiet conversation, with proper installation, they are placed in areas where noise won’t cause any disruption.

Can older homes benefit from air-source heat pumps?

Older properties can benefit from heat pumps, but efficiency depends on proper design and installation. While poorly insulated homes may need upgrades, a well-planned system can still provide effective heating. At GreenGenUK, we offer tailored assessments to maximise performance.

What about the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?

This government incentive provides a £7,500 grant for installing an air source heat pump. It’s a fantastic way to reduce upfront costs. At GreenGenUK, we guide homeowners through the process to make it as simple as possible. Switching to renewable heating has never been easier. With GreenGenUK’s expert guidance and tailored solutions, you can transform your home into an energy-efficient, low-carbon haven. Whether you’re interested in a standalone heat pump or a complete solution with Solar PV and Battery Storage, their team is ready to help.

Fresh trends

FOR KITCHENS

Thinking of purchasing a new kitchen? Here are some pointers as to what will dominate in the coming year.

One of 2025's standout trends is a move towards organic minimalism, where clean lines and natureinspired materials take centre stage. German kitchens, celebrated for their functional and minimalist designs, fit seamlessly into this trend. Featuring natural woods, earthy tones, and sustainable materials, these kitchens create a tranquil, nature-connected space – ideal for a flowing cooking environment.

The kitchens of 2025 will marry technology with sustainability. Energy-efficient appliances and smart home integrations are redefining convenience with an eco-conscious edge. German kitchens, known for their durable, high-quality materials, are designed to accommodate advanced appliances that minimise water and energy consumption. Investing now allows you to create a futureproof kitchen while potentially avoiding rising costs in the years ahead.

Gone are the days of stark white kitchens. In 2025, warm, muted tones – such as taupe, soft greens, and muted terracottas – will be ascendent, creating a welcoming and cosy atmosphere. German kitchen manufacturers are already ahead of the curve, offering an array of colour options that align with this evolving aesthetic.

Ergonomics will also take precedence, with kitchen layouts designed to maximise comfort and efficiency. This focus on usability complements the core principles of German kitchen design, where every element is carefully planned to enhance practicality.

Ready to bring your dream kitchen to life? Contact Kitchen Kit today to explore how German kitchens can transform your home.

From bespoke cabinetry and distinctive finishes to mixed textures and custom hardware, kitchens will reflect their owners' unique styles. German kitchens offer a wealth of customisable options, ensuring that your space is tailored to your vision without compromising on functionality.

Sleeper train

ADVENTURE

Board in Cornwall, wake up in the heart of London refreshed and ready to explore the capital.

There is something irresistibly romantic about boarding a sleeper train, settling into your own private cabin, and waking up to the quiet hum of London as it comes to life. Great Western Railway’s Night Riviera Sleeper is not just a way to travel between Cornwall and the capital – it is an experience in its own right, a journey that blends the literary idea of classic rail travel – think Daphne du Maurier, Pascal Mercier, Michael Palin – with the pull of modern convenience.

Step onto the platform in Cornwall, and your journey awaits. The evening air is cool; the train, resplendent in its green livery, awaits. Passengers with cabins are invited into the Night Riviera Sleeper Lounge, where a warm drink and a comfortable chair set the scene for the night ahead. The demands of the day slip away as the train glides out of the station.

As you close your cabin door behind you, you’ll find that the space is both private and practical. Crisp white bedding, a soft pillow, a wash basin tucked neatly into the corner – small details that transform the train into a place of rest rather than simply a means of transport. Settle in with a book or head to the lounge car for a drink, as the landscape rolls past in the dark, occasionally lit up by street lamps or lights from houses, the reassuring sensation of movement lulling you towards sleep.

At some point in the night, Cornwall gives way to Devon, then Somerset, then the Home Counties. There is no need to mark the miles or count the stations as the Night Riviera Sleeper invites you to simply enjoy the journey. By the time you stir in the morning, the train is approaching London. The city wakes as you do, with a complimentary breakfast delivered to your cabin, a quiet

indulgence before the pace of the day begins. A hot shower awaits in the First Class Lounge at Paddington, along with the knowledge that you have arrived rested, ready to make the most of the day ahead.

For those travelling on business, this is a way to reclaim time – to avoid the early morning flight or the tiresome, bleary-eyed rush of the first train out of Cornwall. Instead, arrive in the capital refreshed, able to walk into meetings with energy and focus.

For leisure travellers, the Night Riviera adds another layer to a London trip, making the journey itself an integral part of the adventure. Theatreland, the great museums, the hidden corners of the city all await.

With 2-for-1 entry at many attractions (www.nationalrail.co.uk/days-out-guide), there is every reason to step straight from the platform into the heart of the capital’s cultural life.

Some choose to travel up overnight but return by day, missing out on one of the true joys of the service. The Night Riviera is not just a way to

get to London; it allows you to enjoy a full day of city life, before boarding again at Paddington and letting the train carry you home. Cornwall waits in the morning, its coastline, harbours, and winding lanes welcoming you.

The beauty of the Night Riviera lies in its simplicity. No check-in queues, no long airport transfers and no early alarms. Just the gentle motion of the train, the privacy of a wellappointed cabin with ever-changing views, and the knowledge that by morning, you will be somewhere new and exciting. In winter, when the nights are long and the days crisp, there is no better way to travel. And with cabins available from £49* alongside your train ticket, it is as much an indulgence as it is a practical choice.

A journey by rail is one of life’s great pleasures, and the Night Riviera Sleeper is one of the finest ways to experience it. Cornwall and London are two very different places, but between them runs a line that allows you to drift from one to the other as the country sleeps. Step aboard, settle in, and let the miles pass below you – unnoticed.

* Prices are correct as of 2nd March 2025 and are subject to availability. A valid train ticket is required in addition to the cabin supplement. Cabin reservations are optional; seating is available on this service. Terms and conditions apply.

REGAINED Time

Hand-carved and inlaid with poetry, Alchemy Tiles revives a lost medieval craft.

In the heart of Mawnan Smith dwells an artist whose work reaches back in time, capturing typographic and visual motifs that speak to all of us. Mel Chambers, a self-taught ceramicist, breathes life into the ancient craft of hand-carved inlay tiles, a tradition that dates back to the 13th century. From her studio near the Helford River, Mel transforms raw clay into bespoke pieces of art, each tile a testament to her dedication and passion.

At Alchemy Tiles, Mel's creations are more than mere decorations; they are stories etched in clay, whispers of inspiration captured in form. Each tile is meticulously hand-carved, not painted, bearing images, poetry and quotes that resonate with the soul. This process, rooted in ancient techniques, ensures that every piece is unique, a reflection of the client's desires and the timeless beauty of Cornwall.

Mel's commitment to her craft has not gone unnoticed. Alchemy Tiles has been honoured five times with the SME Enterprise Award for Best Artisan Tile Company in the Southwest, a testament to the quality and artistry of her work. As a proud member of the Made in Cornwall Scheme, her tiles have been audited by Trading Standards, receiving the highest accreditation as an 'Approved Origin' product.

The magic of Alchemy Tiles lies not only in their beauty but also in their durability.

Using her own recipes for coloured clays, Mel ensures that the hues are as enduring as the tiles themselves. Fired into the very fabric of the tile, these colours will never fade, standing the test of time just as the ancient floors of old have done.

For those seeking to infuse their homes with a touch of personalised artistry, Alchemy Tiles offers a bespoke service. Each tile is handcut to fit any space, reducing the need for adjustments during installation. Whether it's a kitchen backsplash adorned with a favourite quote, a bathroom wall featuring intricate designs, or a standalone piece commemorating a special occasion, Mel collaborates closely with her clients to bring their visions to life.

In a world where mass production often overshadows individuality, Alchemy Tiles is a celebration of bespoke craftsmanship. FROM THE SEA FRESH

Looking forward to the freshest catch this summer.

With the onset of summer, comes a lightness of ingredients and what I’m really excited about this year is the coming of the Atlantic Bluefin tuna season, where these majestic beasts are now fished from Cornish waters. What was once considered an endangered species has come back and is being seen in abundance around Cornwall. The rise in stock of bluefin tuna has been phenomenal, and so last year, DEFRA granted just ten licences to fishermen to line-catch bluefin tuna for the first time in decades – eight of which were granted to Cornish boats. We've had a lot of incredible sightings of tunas, breaching and chasing their prey all around the Cornwall coast and I’m really super-excited that my kitchens will have access to this amazing product. What could be better? It's sustainable because it’s line-caught cord and it really fits into my light and bright style of cooking.

Fine fishermen go out and line-catch these beasts of the sea, sometimes battling with them for a couple of hours trying to reel them in – some have reportedly been tipping the scale at an incredible 454 kilos! These really are substantial fish, usually coming in at up to 260 kilos, so I’m going to be looking at adding a tuna section to both of my restaurant’s menus, to allow me to use as much of the fish as possible, all while supporting the amazing fishermen who catch them. I feel that my duty as a Cornish chef and restaurant owner is to

try and buy as much tuna as I can to stop them having to travel too far. Diners can expect to see fresh tuna, tuna ceviche and some sesame crust tuna; as well as delicious tuna steaks and the ever-popular tuna salad. For me, it’s about showcasing a product that we are all superexcited and proud of.

It's really important that fresh tuna is looked after carefully as soon after it has been landed as possible, and in fact, it benefits from being aged as you would beef. The ideal temperature for ageing a fish is between 1-6 ˚C as any lower can cause ice crystals to form thus damaging the flesh of the fish, whilst any higher would cause the fish to rot. In Japan, tuna is usually aged for seven to ten days by the fishmonger before being sold to a restaurant. The restaurant can then continue to age the tuna for three to four days and up to a week if the tuna is extra fatty.

The cooking of tuna brings with it many traditions, all paying homage to this beautiful fish. In Japan, bluefin tuna head meat, also known as the 'Zumiko', is famous for its succulent texture, which has a great balance between flesh and fat and is wonderful seared on a barbecue. I’m going to pay my own culinary respects to our Cornish tuna and have some wacky ideas about utilising the whole fish; from the more muscular bits, which will have some chewy fibres, to the softer belly each piece will need to be utilised in the right way. The end result will be dishes that are so

fantastic and fresh from local waters – I’m hoping that this will be a true tuna education for all!

There is no doubt that the Japanese-style of preparing tuna works really well; we should take note of how the nation prepares their fish so beautifully, treating it with such respect. There’s perhaps nothing better than tuna sashimi, dipped in the best soy you get, accompanied with a little fresh grated wasabi and ginger on the side; or a simple, freshly diced tuna tartare is incredible too. Even though I love bluefin tuna fresh and uncooked, I still love a pure tuna steak that’s been cooked beautifully. Serve with a mix of chargrilled summer vegetables (asparagus is especially good with tuna) and a light summery dressing or you could build a Japanese-style salad with seared tuna.

Our Josper grill is perfect for searing tuna as it runs at 400˚C. Searing the tuna at this superhot heat gives it an instant smoky flavour while retaining a beautiful rare centre and as you let it rest the heat penetrates through the layers of flesh. Serve with a dressing of soy, yuzu or lemon and a drizzle of sesame oil.

TUNA TATAKI WITH MANGO GINGER DRESSING AND SALSA FRESCA

I'm proud to offer bluefin tuna in my restaurants as the quality is just superb, and I'm so lucky to have such amazing ingredients on the doorstep.

SERVES 6

INGREDIENTS

1 kg piece of tuna loin (bluefin if possible), cut into rectangle shapes

80g white sesame seeds

80g black sesame seeds

Sea salt

Rapeseed oil for cooking

For the Dressing:

1 ripe mango, peeled and destoned

1 thumb of ginger, peeled and chopped

1 red chilli

3 lime, zest and juice

50ml fish sauce

50ml rice wine vinegar

30g palm sugar

30g coriander leaves, chopped

METHOD

1 Start by making the salsa. Simply combine all the ingredients in a bowl, though I recommend not adding all the Jalapeno at once. Perhaps add half and check you're happy with the heat before adding anymore.

2 To make the dressing, add all the ingredients into a blender, except for the oil, and blend until smooth. Next, pour in the oils and mix to form an emulsion. The quantities here will make more than you need, so set aside the extra to use as salad dressing for another meal.

This dish offers a great way to enjoy it with very little cooking needed. To make this dish really sing, do your best to source bluefin tuna.

50ml toasted sesame oil

350ml rapeseed oil

Salt and white pepper

For the Salsa:

3 tomatoes, skinned, pulp removed, finely diced

1/3 cucumber, peeled, pulp removed, finely diced

½ red onion, finely diced

30g coriander, chopped

2 lime, zest and juice

1 green Jalapeno chilli, finely diced

Salt and pepper to taste

For the Garnish:

2 red chilli, sliced

50g coriander leaves

6 pink radishes, thinly sliced

3 Combine the sesame seeds and salt on a tray. Roll the tuna portions in the mix, shaking off any excess seeds and place on a plate ready to cook. Cook the portions in a frying pan on a medium heat with a little oil. You just want to colour the seeds slightly, then turn the portions over to cook briefly on the other side. About 40 seconds on each side is a good guide. When they are done, leave to rest for a couple of minutes.

4 To serve, slice the tuna and arrange onto plates. Drizzle the dressing in between the tuna slice then do the same with the salsa. Garnish with chilli, coriander and radishes.

Fresh, local, sustainable: Boscastle Farm Shop’s new extension is redefining the way we buy, putting food miles at the fore.

Set on the cliffs of north Cornwall, Boscastle Farm Shop has long since been a destination for food lovers. Now, with an exciting expansion, it’s set to become a must-visit. The new farm shop and butchery extension has more than doubled the floor space, bringing with it a host of new offerings while staying true to its ethos of quality, sustainability, and local sourcing.

At the heart of the expansion is the butchery – one that has been a cornerstone of Boscastle Farm Shop since its inception 12 years ago. Beef comes courtesy of Boscastle Farm’s own herd of North Devon Red Ruby cattle, reared on the cliffs that you can see from the café and butchered on-site, ensuring almost zero food miles. The new butchery also boasts its own state-of-the-art hanging room and, with a commitment to traditional butchering, pre-packaged and vacuum-sealed meat is a thing of the past. Instead, customers can select their preferred cuts and discuss their choices with resident butcher, Trev, who has been with the farm shop since the very beginning.

Beyond the butchery, the newly expanded space offers a more immersive shopping experience. With extra room to explore, produce is beautifully showcased, making it easier for visitors to appreciate the wealth of local goods on offer. The deli section is a treasure trove of handmade delights, featuring pasties, sausage rolls, quiches, scones, and award-winning Scotch eggs, all

crafted in the farm’s own café. Meanwhile, the fresh fruit and vegetable displays burst with seasonal produce, reinforcing the farm shop’s commitment to freshness and quality. For those with a taste for the finer things, the farm shop’s alcohol section is a true highlight, featuring an impressive 95% of beers, ciders, wines, and spirits sourced locally. The dairy and cheese selection are equally exceptional, with offerings from renowned local producers such as Rodda’s and Trewithen Dairy and The Greet Cheese Company. The commitment to supporting local ‘food heroes’ also extends to the dry goods section, with products from trusted names like Halzephron Herb Farm and The Bay Tree Food Co.

Of course, no visit would be complete without indulging in something sweet from the delightful range of chocolates, biscuits and fudge, all sourced as close to home as possible. Whether you’re picking up a gift, stocking your pantry, or simply treating yourself, there’s something here to satisfy every craving and Boscastle Farm Shop continues to raise the bar for farm-to-table excellence in Cornwall.

PropertyPERSPECTIVE

With the result of the General Election and the subsequent change of government, we thought we’d take a look at the impact it has and will have on the Cornish property scene.

Words by Jamie Crocker
Property in Withiel, north Cornwall, sold by Rohrs & Rowe

The Cornish property market is unique. No other county encourages such a mix of buyers, and as we enter 2025, it is experiencing a period of notable transformation. A confluence of economic factors, policy changes and shifting buyer preferences is reshaping the housing landscape in the region.

House prices are on the move again!

According to HM Land Registry’s latest report, they rose by 3.4% in October –though the official figures won’t land until February. This brings the average UK house price to a tidy £292,000. In Cornwall, things are a bit different. The average price here sits slightly higher at £301,000, but that’s down 1.5% compared to last year. Meanwhile, the broader south west region has seen a 2.7% increase. It’s a reminder that Cornwall’s property market marches to its own beat.

Mortgage rates, of course, remain the big player in this dance. Current rates of 4.83% for five-year fixes and 5.08% for two-year fixes might sound steep, but there’s good news on the horizon. Experts predict they’ll drop to around 4.0% in 2025, giving buyers a little breathing room.

Lower rates could nudge more people onto the ladder, but let’s not forget – this all depends on the wider economic mood.

Then there’s the second home debate, which shows no signs of cooling. The government’s plan to hike the stamp duty surcharge on second homes to 5%, coupled with a doubling of council tax by 2025, is designed to tackle housing shortages. While these policies aim to ease local pressures, they could also shake up investment in holiday lets, with ripples across the local economy.

Looking ahead, Cornwall’s housing market faces a bit of a balancing act. Falling mortgage rates might bring a buzz of activity, but the long-term impact of second-home policies remains unclear. It’s a tricky puzzle.

In this dynamic environment, the insights of local estate agents are invaluable. Their first-hand experiences and nuanced understanding of market subtleties provide a comprehensive perspective on the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for Cornwall's property sector. As such, we’ve canvassed the expert opinion of five Cornwall-based estate agents to get an ‘on the ground’ opinion of what’s happening. Here are the results.

Emma Mather – Managing Director –The Mather Partnership

“We are currently experiencing a busy market with numerous buyers eager to move. It's a very price-sensitive market, meaning properties priced attractively are getting significant interest and offers. Although there are fewer buyers for second homes and holiday lets, the general demand for residential properties remains strong.

“To succeed in this market, you need a proactive approach guided by an experienced team.

That's where we come in. Our team at The Mather Partnership has a wealth of experience and a proven track record of helping clients navigate the complexities of buying and selling homes. We understand the importance of pricing your property correctly and marketing it effectively to attract the right buyers.”

www.thematherpartnership.co.uk

Martyn Rohrs – Director –Rohrs and Rowe

“The 2024 Cornish housing market was primarily driven by house movers rather than holiday home buyers. Demand for holiday lets particularly declined due to the tax changes made in the spring and autumn budgets, which ended the previously favourable regime. Cornwall Council’s announcement to double council tax on second homes from April 2025 further dampened interest among some buyers.

“The summer General Election and subsequent change in government led to widespread speculation in the national press about further tax reforms that would take place in Labour’s first budget, further cooling some sectors of the market. Many buyers adopted a cautious "wait and see" stance. However, after the clarity that was provided by the October budget, buyer confidence began to recover, with sales activity picking up considerably in the autumn. Many seller’s price expectations adjusted during the year, too, narrowing the gap with buyers’ budgets and further facilitating transactions.

“Looking to 2025, there is considerable optimism. With clearer policies and renewed momentum, stronger buyer demand is anticipated across all markets. Both local and national buyers, of all age groups, remain eager to live or own a home in Cornwall. These factors create a positive outlook for the market and present opportunities for sellers to capitalise on improving conditions.”

“2024 has certainly been a challenging marketplace, what with a change of government, autumn budget statement and the general economic climate. A huge number of new listings have come on throughout the year, which have somewhat flooded the market at times and created a buyer’s market in some areas. Having said that, we have still seen a fairly active market with sensible pricing as the key. There are still challenges ahead, but with the budget out of the way, a normal market can resume. I do feel the market has turned a corner, and we will experience a more positive outlook in 2025.”

Jane Thomas – Sales Manager –May, Whetter & Grose – Fowey "The Cornish property market is navigating an intriguing chapter as 2025 begins. Over the past year, we at May Whetter & Grose have seen shifting trends driven by legislative changes, buyer priorities, and a renewed focus on sustainability. These dynamics present both challenges and opportunities for homeowners, vendors and prospective buyers alike.

“One significant influence has been the introduction of higher council tax premiums on second homes, aimed at addressing Cornwall’s housing affordability crisis. This has tempered speculative purchases, and together with an increase in the SDLT for second homes, we are seeing a change in focus. The aim is that more properties become available to local families, however, this is dependent on the type of properties coming to the market as not all second home stock is suitable for families and main home living. The policy attempts to rebalance the market in favour of primary residences to reduce the hollowing-out effect often seen in picturesque Cornish towns – time will tell as to how successful this will be.

“Despite these changes, demand for homes in Cornwall remains strong. Remote working has continued to make our beautiful county an attractive prospect for those seeking lifestyle relocations.

Buyers are increasingly prioritising energy efficiency and eco-credentials, making properties with solar panels, heat pumps, or strong EPC ratings particularly appealing.

“At May Whetter & Grose, we pride ourselves on guiding clients through this evolving landscape with expert advice and a deep understanding of the local market. If you’re considering buying, selling, or renting in Cornwall, now is a pivotal moment to act.” www.maywhetter.co.uk

The Cornish property market has always held a unique allure, and 2025 appears to be no different. With economic policies, shifting buyer dynamics, and a new government shaping the landscape, the region finds itself at a crossroads. Though challenges remain, such as the impact of second-home legislation and evolving buyer confidence, Cornwall's appeal continues to shine through.

Navigating this changing market requires a combination of realism, adaptability and local expertise. The outlook is one of cautious optimism: while buyers and sellers must adjust to new norms, there are opportunities to be found. Cornwall's enduring desirability, bolstered by the promise of renewed stability and interest rate changes, suggests a brighter horizon ahead.

As the property market transitions into this next phase, it remains rooted in the charm and resilience of the region – an enduring testament to Cornwall’s unique place in the hearts of many.

A Cornish culinary ROAD TRIP

Buckle up and engage those gears because we’re about to embark on a delectable journey that will take us across Cornwall.

Words by Jamie Crocker

Ready and waiting for you at the

Forget Google Maps; our navigation tools are our taste buds, guiding us from one mouth-watering halt to another, from Penzance to St Breward. Whether you’re a seasoned foodie or just looking to escape the usual supermarket suppers, join us as we uncover some of the most tantalising spots in Cornwall, one bite at a time.

 PREVIOUS

A serving of joy at the Rising Sun

Our journey begins in Penzance at the Barbican Bistro (barbicanbistro.com), where small plates, with a focus on fresh fish, are certainly worth fuelling up with before we begin your epicurean odyssey. This quirky little spot, situated on Barbican Lane, serves up such tasty treats as pickled anchovies marinated in chilli and lemon along with John Dory with asparagus and beurre blanc. Pair these offerings with a glass of their wine, beer or cider and we’re starting our road trip in the right frame of mind that even the weather can’t dampen. Just remember to nominate a driver before you head off along the A30 as the beverages en route will be hard to resist!

Next, we cruise into Falmouth, where Nourish at St Michaels Resort (stmichaelsresort.com/dine/nourish) offers a dining experience that’s all about balance – mind, body and palate. Picture Cornish tapas for starters, brioche and shawarma. The main courses range from sustainably caught fish to organic vegetables that speak volumes of their garden origins. A bustling cafe atmosphere by day transitions seamlessly into a cool, contemporary, social and relaxed bar restaurant by night – it’s a pity we have to head off before it kicks off.

Top down and still basking in the coastal air, our next stop is Swanpool Beach’s very own gem, Hooked on the Rocks (hookedontherocksfalmouth. com). Specialising in seafood such as Falmouth Bay scallops with roe butter and seaweed pangrattato, and wild prawns with garlic butter, ‘nduja, lime and fresh herbs, this location will

EXPERIENCE

LEARN THE CULINARY ART

And for those who enjoy prepping as well as consuming:

Philleigh Way (philleighway. co.uk), where you can roll up your sleeves and immerse yourself in hands-on culinary adventures, learning the secrets behind creating delicious dishes with flair.

Rick Steins Cookery School (shop.rickstein.com/ products/rick-stein-one-daycookery-course) in Padstow is a culinary playground where you can master seafood dishes under the guidance of expert chefs.

St Ives Cookery School (stivescookeryschool.co.uk) offers dynamic classes where you can hone your culinary skills while enjoying breathtaking ocean vistas.

have you ‘hooked’ with its foodie offerings. What’s more the view of the shore isn’t just a backdrop – it’s part of the experience. Each bite pairs perfectly with the calming sound of waves breaking against the rocks below.

Retracing our tyre tracks we drive to Penryn, and having roared past the golden arches without a second glance we find ourselves at Situ Café (situcafe.co.uk), a place where comfort meets cuisine in contemporary coalescence. This café thrives on the concept of heritage food that is derived from headchef Sham’s Ugandan Indian background & culture – a coming together of traditional Gujarati dishes with Ugandan influences.

The ambiance is cosy urban chic warmed to smooth perfection, enticing patrons to linger a little longer over a house or feature espresso – it’s just such a shame that we have to hit the road again.

However, waving goodbye to the coast and rolling onwards to Redruth, we make a pitstop at the ever-charming Penventon Hotel (penventon.co.uk). Here, dining is an affair fit for royals, albeit ones with a penchant for cutting loose now and then.

The menu combines the sumptuousness of classic European dishes with local Cornish twists. Sit down to 12-hour braised pork porchetta or tagliatelle pasta incorporating

the chef’s flavour of the day. And the wine list? Sophisticated enough to require a manual – thankfully, the sommeliers are on hand to translate.

A slight detour to Treleigh brings us to the Inn For All Seasons (innforallseasons.co.uk/ restaurant), a pub that boasts a spacious restaurant that can cater for family and friends or for couples who wish to experience quiet dining in a booth for two. The name doesn’t lie; no matter when you visit, there’s always something delicious in season. Their famous carvery makes autumnal dining a real pleasure, with a summer menu that turns eating into a gourmet experience. ‘local’ is the key here – be it the ale or the impressive Sunday roast, it’s all crafted from local Cornish produce.

EXPERIENCE

SIP AND SAVOUR

These we had to bypass but are worthy of mention:

Knightor Winery (knightor. com) offers delightful vineyard tours and tastings, providing a perfect sip of tranquillity and a taste of local passion.

Sharps Brewery (sharpsbrewery.co.uk) in Rock, has been crafting exceptional beers that epitomise the spirit of the British coast.

Copperfish Distillery (copperfishdistillery.co.uk) artfully blends tradition and innovation to create exquisite Cornish spirits that leave a lasting impression with every sip.

Pedal to the metal we forge a path to Cornwall’s only city, Truro. Pulling up outside The Rising Sun (therisingsuntruro. co.uk) we are ready to be greeted by an eclectic mix of old and new. This pub does not shy away from experimenting – expect dishes like west country duck, orange-glazed carrots, asparagus, parmentier potatoes and pomegranate jus, raising your regular pub grub into something worthy of a fanfare. In summer its garden offers a relaxed setting that’s perfect for an extended lunch (or several). Just when you think you’ve seen it all, their selection of craft gins is the perfect beverage to sip the afternoon away engaged in convivial conversation.

Wishing we were in a piece of Italian automobile exotica we capture a taste of Latinate romance in Wadebridge at Bellinis (bellinis.co.uk). As if stepping into a Roman trattoria, you’re greeted with intoxicating aromas of garlic, olive oil and simmering tomato sauces. The pasta dishes are works of art, as you’d expect, and the pizzas… well, why not try for yourself. Pair your meal with some classic Italian hospitality, and you’ll feel like you’re driving along the Amalfi coast with the top down!

At Rock, we clamber out of our vehicle, stretch our legs and ascend to the culinary splendour that is the Upper Deck (upperdeckrock. co.uk). This nautical-themed restaurant takes the sea-to-fork concept seriously, with their starters showcasing a broad representation that includes pan seared scallops, Porthilly mussels and Mediterranean style prawns. The view of the estuary adds an extra piquancy to the already perfect dishes, making this a dining experience that stays fresh in your memory long after the last morsel has vanished.

Venturing inland, St Tudy is home to the St Tudy Inn (sttudyinn.com) – what else? It’s a blended mix of the rustic and refined where everything comes together in a cosy refuge of bonhomie. This charming old country pub, is a welcoming sanctuary for foodies craving sophisticated dishes with a home-cooked touch. Their Sunday roasts are legendary, served with all the trimmings and a tincture of extra love. And if you’re lucky enough to visit on a Tuesday around 1pm level up your week with their

Two for Tuesday deal when you can choose any two lunch main courses for £20.

Our penultimate gastronomic pause is at St Breward’s Old Inn and Restaurant (theoldinnandrestaurant.co.uk), seated high up on Bodmin Moor. The snug bars, huge roaring log fires and sloping beamed ceilings, make this one of the country’s, let alone Cornwall’s, quintessential English pubs. The menu champions hearty, comforting dishes – from classic ploughman’s to signature steaks, with every item a gastronomic delight. Paired with a pint of local ale or a glass of smooth cider, it’s the perfect place to take stock before quickly descending off the moor to our last stop.

The gastronomic expedition hits the now smoking brakes at the Port William (theportwilliam.co.uk. co.uk), a hostelry that is managed by St Austell Brewery. Firmly seated on the side of a steep valley overlooking Trebarwith Strand, and a stone’s throw from the golden sandy surf beach below, it’s the perfect cosy venue to enjoy a Sunday roast whilst being thrilled by the site of a brewing storm outside. Sitting snugly, with our fellow road trippers we relax against the thoughtfully provided blankets and sheepskins whislt warming ourselves in front of the roaring log fire. A pint of Tribute in hand we casually consider the menu whilst one of our party heads off to book a couple of rooms for the night.

A legacy of EXCELLENCE

Rohrs & Rowe have built an enviable reputation rooted in trust, expertise and an ability to deliver remarkable results.

This year marks the ninth year in business for Rohrs & Rowe, a milestone that firmly establishes them in Cornwall’s estate agency sector. Their innovative and progressive approach has redefined estate agency services within the county, earning them the prestigious title of Best Estate Agency in Cornwall on six occasions from the renowned International Property Awards. Their most recent accolade, for the 2024/25 period, was presented at a gala dinner at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London, further cementing their reputation in the region’s property market.

For founders Martyn and Matthew, these awards reflect their unwavering commitment.

outcomes for our clients. Our commitment ensures we don’t just market houses – we sell them. We invite anyone considering selling their home to contact us for a confidential discussion, whether their property is new to the market or has struggled via a different approach.”

Their success stories for 2024 include a Georgian property once home to Cornish artist John Miller. The property proved perfect for an international couple starting a luxury bed-and-breakfast, and Rohrs & Rowe’s expert handling ensured a smooth transaction, despite the requirement for a change of use. The clients summed it up: “Fantastic guidance and service throughout. Calm, polite, reassuringly experienced, solid communication throughout the process and a range of brilliant marketing, which found the right buyers for our property in a timely way.”

Rohrs & Rowe excel in navigating challenging market conditions, as shown by Compass Point in Mevagissey. Despite entering the market during a cooling period, their strategic marketing and unwavering dedication secured a buyer captivated by the property’s location and exceptional sea views. The owners commented: “Rohrs & Rowe are a professional team who stand out amongst estate agents, with a wealth of experience and knowledge that extends across Cornwall. From start to finish, we received sound, honest advice, and they were with us every step of the way – always communicative, supportive, and proactive. Their photography was outstanding. Having dealt with many property transactions and estate agents over the years, Rohrs & Rowe outshines them all, and we would not hesitate to recommend them.”

Matthew explains: “After years in corporate agencies, Martyn and I formed a vision to disrupt the status quo and offer something truly different. When we launched Rohrs & Rowe in 2016, estate agencies were largely one-dimensional, offering limited use of technology and mostly standardised approaches. We saw an opportunity to innovate with professional drone and video technology, leverage the global reach of social media, craft engaging visuals and narratives that highlight a property’s lifestyle appeal –all while maintaining the highest customer service standards. We’ve also carefully built our exceptional team of professionals, who are all dedicated to their craft. It’s incredibly rewarding to see how our vision has reshaped the industry over the last decade.”

Looking ahead, Martyn comments: “Our goal is always to stay ahead of the curve. For 2025, we have introduced new technology and marketing strategies exclusively available in Cornwall through Rohrs & Rowe. These advancements will further enhance our extensive marketing capabilities, enabling us to target and reach wider national and international audiences and deliver the best

Their adaptability is evident in the sale of Treath at Praa Sands. Initially listed with another agent, it struggled to attract interest.

Rohrs & Rowe revitalised the listing with evocative winter photography and a fresh strategy, generating immediate interest. The owners reflected: “Having attempted a sale through a local agent the previous

year, we decided to market our house with Rohrs & Rowe in the hope of appealing to a wider market. It was a very different and more professional experience, which was immediately apparent with the quality of photographs and the brochure they produced. They took the time to get to know our property and its unique selling points. We were very fortunate that our buyers were found within two weeks, and we managed to sell during a very uncertain and changeable housing market. We are very grateful that we chose to sell through Rohrs & Rowe and have no hesitation in recommending them.”

“We were impressed by their knowledge and lightness of touch in dealing with both ourselves and the purchasers. Their proven track record, outstanding photographic and video work, and immediate introduction of purchasers demonstrated their exceptional market insight.”

Attention to detail defines their approach, as seen with Ansells, a stunning modern residence on the Roseland Peninsula boasting outstanding sea views. Selling such a unique home required a bespoke campaign showcasing its design and location through targeted national advertising and stunning visuals. The owners said: “We were so impressed by their professionalism, understanding of the market, and unfailing courtesy and support as they guided us through the process. The house was marketed with stunning photos and a video, and promoted with full-page advertisements in a range of magazines. We feel that Rohrs & Rowe went the extra mile to show the house in as many ways as possible and to its best advantage.”

Similarly, Trevethow, a four-bedroom cottage in Mullion, highlighted their creativity and precision. By focusing on its blend of historic charm and modern comforts, they quickly generated multiple offers. Client feedback described them as “Agile. Communicative. Proactive. Rohrs & Rowe are an exemplar for the rest of the industry. This is what good estate agency looks like.”

Rohrs & Rowe also excel in handling sensitive transactions. The owners of a beautiful Georgian farmhouse in Falmouth, located between two idyllic beaches, required discretion at the marketing stage. By leveraging their extensive database of contacts and buyers, Rohrs & Rowe conducted a quiet yet effective campaign. The clients commented:

What sets Rohrs & Rowe apart is their approach. They go beyond simply listing properties on Rightmove by securing highimpact advertising in leading publications and extensive, targeted social media campaigns. Their philosophy of collaboration and innovation ensures they remain ahead of market trends. From compelling visuals to personalised strategies, they don’t just sell homes – they curate lifestyles.

For anyone considering selling property in Cornwall, Rohrs & Rowe offers more than expertise – they offer a trusted partnership rooted in integrity and a shared vision for success. Cornwall’s property market is as diverse as its landscapes, from historic cottages to sleek, modern masterpieces. By focusing on what is unique, Rohrs & Rowe ensures every property stands out. Their results speak for themselves, and their ethos of collaboration and excellence leaves a lasting impression.

Whether selling a historic farmhouse, a contemporary haven, or something unusual or unique that would benefit from their approach, Rohrs & Rowe provides a service that is beyond the status quo. If you’re ready for your property to tell its unique story, there’s no one better equipped.

THE MAELSTROM An anchor in

Helston’s Museum of Cornish Life is a treasure trove of items that bear witness to life and times gone by on land and sea.

Housing a wide-ranging collection through which we can share stories of life in Cornwall, Helston’s Museum of Cornish Life can be found in the town’s former market buildings. The collection on display ranges wildly in size, from the smallest item, a dice made from the tooth of a lion, to the largest – the historic building itself!

Led by Annette MacTavish, the museum’s Director, this wonderful museum is always looking for new ways to share what it has to offer and to make it as welcoming as possible to as many people as possible. When the museum first opened its doors in 1949 the newspaper headline read ‘Farmers will like it’. This summer, as Annette explains, “The museum is continuing with its project led by Dr Tehmina Goskar to better reflect Cornish farming from the 1970s to today. As the project moves into its second year, we will be undertaking preventive conservation in public so visitors can speak to us and find out more. This is all being made possible thanks to an award of £78,000 from the Museums Association Esmée Fairbairn Collections Fund.”

While the museum displays objects relating to working life from farming via fishing to mining, the main focus remains on everyday

items. Annette continues, “We specialise in the things people owned and loved. As you look around the museum, you will see objects that remind you of things people you know have used in their lifetime. The museum is home to things used and loved, not boxed up and kept for special occasions. It’s why we can see people in the things we share, and why the museum is so special.”

As part of the 'Farmers will like it' project', the museum is also commissioning things relating to Cornish farming today. Their first contemporary commission – a symbol of gratitude to the farmers, growers and land of Cornwall that feed and sustain us – is a new wassail bowl for Cornwall. Designed and made by ceramic artist Angi Richardson of AKR Ceramics, it is on display at the museum which is free to visit and open Monday to Saturday 10am-4pm.
