s I sit down to write this, I’m reminded just how proud and privileged we are to live and work in a place as wonderful as Cornwall. While the last few weeks has seen the Duchy battered by strong winds and icy conditions, she’s still beautiful in her winter attire. Life here is certainly shaped by the seasons and, of course, by the sea. Vibrant coastal communities are what draw both visitors and those looking for a more permanent change in pace of life. Experience THE LOST GARDENS OF HELIGAN The Lost Gardens of Heligan were rediscovered from the brambles of time

by Tim Smit and John Willis, who were the catalysts for a 30-year project that continues to this day. Heligan remains one of the most loved and romantic gardens in the UK, appreciated as much for its beauty and mystery as for the groundbreaking restoration project.

This January and February, The Lost Gardens of Heligan are inviting visitors to set their own admission price as part of their revolutionary new Free Range Pricing experiment, which will run every day through to February 28th, including February half-term and the Global Pasty Championships.

On arrival, visitors will be asked to choose how much they would like to contribute to Heligan’s pioneering nature and learning programmes, which include its beaver reintroduction, a successful programme that saw babies, or kits, born on the Heligan estate last year (2025). Also thriving thanks to Heligan reintroductions are water voles and glow worms and coming later this year is a new red squirrel habitat and breeding programme, as well as tree-planting and outdoor education programmes promoting connection to nature for young people.

ornwall’s property market story heading into 2026 is one of cautious optimism. After a period of correction from the peaks of 2022, asking and sold prices have begun to align more realistically and have become largely stabilised, with market data showing average sold values in the low-to-mid £300,000s, depending on the source.

Nationally, forecasters are pencilling in a modest uplift next year as mortgage rates ease and affordability improves, a backdrop that could unlock a return of buyer confidence across the South West.

Locally, demand patterns remain distinct: scarcity of good stock, the enduring appeal for coastal lifestyle buyers and the continued buoyancy at the top of the market, where million-pound listings and sales have become noticeably more common, all look set to shape transactions in 2026.

Recent county market briefs and agency reporting point to stronger sales-agreed activity, but with price sensitivity and careful negotiation still the order of the day.

Together, these factors point to steady growth and fresh opportunity, particularly in the South West, where momentum is expected to gather pace as the year progresses.

Realistic pricing will remain essential, and sellers are advised to prepare early by assembling legal documentation, including title deeds, guarantees and planning permissions, to help ensure a smoother conveyancing process.”

ith Dry January already upon us, St Austell Brewery is making a clear case for moderation without compromise. Proper Job 0.5% is the low-alcohol interpretation of its best-known IPA, created for drinkers who want flavour and satisfaction while cutting back on alcoholic intake.

Released in October 2024 after more than two years of development, Proper Job 0.5% has arrived with confidence. In a short space of time, it has collected four major awards, including Gold from the Beer and Bottling Institute and Taste of the West, alongside recognition at the World Alcohol Free Awards and the World Beer Awards. With the no and low beer category growing, Proper Job 0.5% sets the benchmark for others to follow.

The brewing brief was straightforward but demanding: create a beer that tastes recognisably like Proper Job. To do that, the team used Cascade, Willamette and Chinook hops, the same found in the full-strength IPA. The result is a beer with clear citrus, grapefruit and pineapple notes, delivered with a clean, crisp finish that feels genuinely beer-like.

St Austell Brewery’s Brewing Director, Georgina Young, said: “Low and no-alcohol drinks have been around for decades, but there’s been a significant increase in demand over the past five years.

“Knowing how loved Proper Job is amongst beer drinkers, we opted to respond to this demand by bringing the big, vivid flavours of our flagship brand to the low-alcohol market.

“Whilst it’s been a long time coming for St Austell Brewery to release a low-alcohol beer, we took time to evolve a brewing method that would create a naturally authentic IPA, worthy of being branded Proper Job 0.5%.

We wouldn’t settle for anything less than a well-bodied, tasty IPA without the alcohol, and we’ve finally perfected a recipe which has nailed that.”

She added: “Taste testing was the final stage in our journey and we were thrilled it was deemed the overwhelming favourite against many of our competitors in extensive tests.”

Proper Job 0.5% is available from the brewery’s online shop and supermarkets nationwide. For Dry January, and beyond, this is a beer that treats moderation as a conscious choice.

’m a big fan of two things: saying yes and drinking coffee.

And let me tell you, those two passions have taken me on some wild rides. As a chef for almost all my life, I’ve worked in some seriously odd kitchens and been offered some downright strange jobs. Looking back now, it all makes sense. Having ADHD meant that I would quickly get bored of one job and move on to the next! I’m still very much a ‘yes’ man, because I believe it can take you down some incredibly fun and adventurous routes.

But what does this have to do with coffee?

Well, there was an email that changed everything. Rewind six years, and I’m sitting at home when an email pings into my inbox from Doug McMaster the Jedi master of food waste and owner of Silo, the world’s first zero waste restaurant. It read… “Martyn, short and sweet: two weeks cooking on a boat. What are you saying?” I immediately said yes.

Then reality hit me like a splash of cold brew to the face. I’d just agreed to leave my wife alone with our six-month-old baby in the middle of a pandemic. Perhaps not my finest moment of decision-making! So, I sadly declined. But then I asked the question that would spark an obsession: “What’s the cargo?” Coffee and chocolate, came the reply.

My brain spiralled immediately, imagining the wild journey it would have been guzzling coffee and eating copious amounts of chocolate while sailing across the ocean. Ho hum, it wasn’t to be.

Preparation: 20 minutes Cooking: 25 minutes

INGREDIENTS 450 g (1lb) monkfish, trimmed and cut into 4 cm (11⁄2 in) pieces (on the bone) 2 tablespoons olive oil 25 g (1oz) unsalted butter 12 small shallots, peeled (keep whole) 6 garlic cloves, peeled

MONKFISH BOURGUIGNON

he classic flavours of bourguignon and monkfish.

There are not many easy swaps here; the meaty, robust nature of the monkfish can keep up with the pace though and is a really lovely alternative to using beef. A lighter red wine like Pinot Noir sets the scene well, giving you a relatively quick, stew-like, comforting fish supper.

METHOD 1

Pat the monkfish dry with kitchen paper and season with sea salt. Heat the olive oil and butter in a large pan. Once bubbling, cook the monkfish in batches until the fish is golden brown. Remove and set aside.

In the same pan, sauté the shallots and garlic until softened and translucent. Pour in the fish stock, allowing it to gently deglaze the pan, and bring to a simmer.

Add the tin of tomatoes, chilli flakes and the bouquet garni, then add the baby carrots. Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 15 minutes until the carrots are tender (be careful not to overcook them).

250 ml (1 cup) Fish Stock 1 x 400 g (14oz) tin of chopped tomatoes 1 teaspoon dried chilli (hot pepper) flakes 1 bouquet garni (rosemary and thyme sprigs plus a bay leaf tied together) 6 baby carrots with tops 200 g (7oz) sugar snap peas 1 teaspoon cornflour (cornstarch) 500 ml (17 fl oz/2 cups) red wine (Pinot Noir) Sea salt Extra thyme leaves, to garnish Buttery mash, to serve

Bring a small pan of water to the boil and blanch and refresh the sugar snap peas.

In a small bowl, slake the cornflour with the red wine. Pour into the pan, then add the monkfish pieces back to the pan and simmer for 5 to 6 minutes until the monkfish is just cooked. Finally, add the sugar snap peas.

aised on the coast, Sonia Shomalzadeh spends as much time as possible outdoors in nature. “The sea is in my blood. My whole family shares a deep love of the ocean. I was born on the south coast and spent my childhood camping in Dorset. My dad said I wanted to be in the water all the time and my mum grew up swimming in Mauritius, so now we go in the sea together whenever we can,” explains Sonia. Moving to Cornwall to study, inspired her passion for marine life: “I’ve always been aware of plastic pollution, then I read a shocking statistic saying there are 46,000 pieces of plastic in every square mile of the ocean. That’s why it’s so important to me to raise awareness of the human impact on wildlife. I use research to highlight the beauty of vulnerable species so that more people are drawn to supporting them.”

Using the beach as a canvas allows Sonia to create work on a vast scale: “I wanted to create art resembling the most threatened marine species, showing their beauty and vulnerability, so I chose the animals most endangered by the human impact of pollution in our waters.” To create a life-sized blue whale, Sonia paces the 30-metre length in the sand to mark out the size and then works abstractly with her hands and feet. “I can roughly see the proportions of a tail at ground level, but I don’t really know how it looks until I climb the cliff above it for a better view. I focus on the curves: it’s very intuitive.”

During her residency at Watergate Bay Hotel earlier this year, Sonia found some much-needed focus time. By immersing herself in the environment, she was able to take creative inspiration from watching the waves and tides. Sketching out her work on paper and canvas, she would then transfer the drawings on to the sand at low tide.

“I love the marks I can create in the sand and the freedom I get from art that leaves no trace; it feels like a ritual, an offering to the sea. Although, there can be a mix of emotions when I see my drawings wash away.

Sometimes drawing these pieces gives me a deep sense of sadness, because I know many marine species are literally disappearing and that is part of the message I’m trying to convey.

Sonia’s work has wildlife conservation at its heart: “Art has the ability to connect with people and create a lasting impact, which can lead to powerful change. Our habits need to change so we can live more sustainably and in harmony with our natural environment.

his winter, the RSPCA is urging people to take some simple steps to help keep pets, livestock and wildlife safe. Low temperatures and icy conditions can present additional challenges for animals, particularly those that are outdoors or in exposed areas. The charity is reminding people that a few simple checks and small changes to daily routines can help keep pets, livestock and wildlife comfortable and safe during colder spells. The call comes as the charity’s Big Give Back to Animals continues to raise awareness for how we can support its frontline officers amid a challenging winter.

RSPCA superintendent Simon Osborne said: “Cold weather can be challenging for animals, especially those that are outside.

A few simple steps – like giving pets extra bedding, preventing water from freezing, or leaving extra food for birds – can make a big difference. Small actions like these, help keep our pets, livestock and wildlife safe, warm and comfortable during the colder days ahead.”

Outdoor pets, such as rabbits and guinea pigs, should be brought indoors or provided with plenty of extra bedding and where

possible hutches should be protected with insulated and ventilated covers. Cats should have constant access to a warm, dry indoor area, whether that’s the house, or a suitable outbuilding or barn, free from draughts.

Some dogs, particularly those that are elderly or sickly, may benefit from a coat during cold walks, and care should be taken during dark, icy conditions by wearing reflective clothing when walking. Dogs should be kept away from frozen ponds, lakes and rivers whilst owners should check their pets’ fur and paws for any snow or ice buildup.

Wildlife may need extra support during cold spells. Keep bird baths ice-free, and clean feeders regularly. Check wood or leaf piles for hibernating animals, such as hedgehogs, frogs and mice, before lighting fires or bonfires.

Leaving out fresh water and food for birds is also encouraged.
