Welcome

From the Editor

to the latest edition of Cornwall Living!

There is something unmistakably special about life in Cornwall. It’s a place where creativity flourishes, where independent retailers and entrepreneurial makers bring a sense of individuality and craftsmanship that sets the county apart. At a time when many high streets face challenges, Cornwall’s independent shops, boutiques and galleries are quietly thriving, offering unique finds that celebrate design and quality. An example of such success is Jo Downs Handmade Glass, as Jamie Crocker found out when he spoke to Jo about how some hard decisions in difficult economic times paid off. Jo Downs now has six galleries across Cornwall – read more from page 15

In this issue, our focus also turns to the spaces we call home. From the elegant touches that elevate interiors to the larger choices that shape where and how we live, we explore what it means to embrace a lifestyle by the sea. Beginning on page 29, our dedicated Cornwall Living Homes & Interiors supplement is brimming with inspiration... from windows and doors, shutters and blinds, to garden and home design and sustainable heating options, this is a guide to creating spaces that are not only stylish but practical.

Of course, a truly special home is never complete without art. From page 45, we highlight works by Cornish artists that bring depth, colour and a sense of story to any interior. Whether it’s a contemporary canvas that captures the drama of the Atlantic or a sculptural piece that echoes the textures of the coast, these are works that enrich our homes.

For those dreaming of their next move, from page 70 we unveil some of Cornwall’s most desirable properties currently on the market. From modern seaside sanctuaries with sweeping ocean views to grand country retreats hidden within rolling landscapes, these homes represent the very best of luxury living.

This issue is a celebration of style, creativity and the enduring appeal of Cornwall as a place to live well. Whether you’re refreshing a room, curating your art collection, or searching for a dream property by the sea, we invite you to discover the inspiration within these pages.

Finally, a big thank you to everyone who has nominated their favourite Cornish business for the Cornwall Living Awards 2025. As we push the print button, we will be closing nominations for this year. The shortlist will be published online later this month at www.enginehousemedia.co.uk/cl-awards as well as appearing in our next issue ahead of final voting.

Finding strength beside the water

Eight young men from The Wave Project’s Surf Therapy programme recently embarked on a powerful new journey, thanks to a partnership with Both Sides Retreats. Held at 7th Rise in Cornwall, the three-day retreat was designed to build on the resilience and friendships, offering space to reflect, reconnect and grow.

The experience combined cold-water immersion, breathwork, foraging, firebuilding and surfing, encouraging participants to explore what it means to feel calm, grounded and connected. Crucially, the young men also spent time around older male role models, learning to navigate the transition from boyhood to adulthood.

Parents described the change as “lifechanging,” with one mother noting how her son returned home more confident, inspired, and ready to embrace the outdoors.

For The Wave Project, the retreat represents a natural next step. Surf Therapy begins as an introduction to the ocean’s healing

power, followed by ongoing support through Surf Clubs and mentoring. This latest collaboration adds a new dimension, giving young men tools for life while reinforcing a sense of belonging and purpose.

As Both Sides Retreats co-founder Josh reflected: “We wanted to equip these young men with skills to become better men for their families, communities and themselves.”

In a time when youth mental health needs are rising sharply, initiatives like this show just how vital – and transformative –community-based support can be.

Katie Warren, of Fixer Property & Management, offers her insight on the tourism industry in Cornwall and why we must adapt to protect employment and local communities.

Tourism is hugely important to Cornwall’s economy, culture and identity. It is one of the region’s most vital industries, with significant social and economic impacts.

First, and most importantly, tourism supports around 1 in 5 jobs in Cornwall, directly or indirectly. This includes employment in hospitality, retail, transport, entertainment and heritage sectors. In a recent paper commissioned by Cornwall Council, The Cornwall We Know, May 2025 Snapshot, it states that Cornwall consistently ranks as a top three UK travel destination, and it makes up approximately 20% of our employment.

Previous data shows that tourism contributes over £2 billion annually to the Cornish economy, and that it is a major driver of income in a region which otherwise struggles with low wages, although the Real Living Wage is on the increase.

We know that thousands of small businesses, from B&Bs to restaurants to surf schools, rely on seasonal visitors. Many towns are heavily tourism-dependent, which is why it is so important for us to explore more sustainable tourism options, and make sure these businesses can run all year round. We want tourism to be celebrated as a career choice, and not something that is considered lowpaid and low-skilled.

Over the next few months, I am exploring more ideas of how we can flourish all year round and would love business owners to get in touch with suggestions and ongoing concerns that we can provide feedback to both Visit Cornwall and Cornwall Council.

Creative and RETAIL RESILIENCE

Sometimes the hardest choices forge the most hoped-for results.

In Robert Frost’s words, “Two roads diverged in a wood, and I… took the one less travelled by, and that has made all the difference.” For fused glass artist Jo Downs, both her artistic journey and the direction of her business have been shaped by such moments.

Earlier this year, Jo stepped away from the daily demands of running one of the UK’s most successful glass studios and retreated to the hills of rural Spain. It was there, far from the pull of deadlines and commercial pressures, that she re-discovered a rare state of uninterrupted creative flow. For weeks, she immersed herself in the raw, experimental spirit that first drew her to glass more than three decades ago.

The work that arose from this solitude was unlike anything she had created before. Some pieces sold before they could even be photographed, demonstrating their energy and originality. This became the foundation of her latest Signature Collection, which marks a leap in complexity. Drawing directly onto glass with a needle-tipped pen filled with specially mixed enamels, Jo forms lines that blur and bleed during firing, much like watercolour pigments seeping into paper. This organic unpredictability reflects the Cornish coastline, one of her lasting inspirations, with its constant interplay of solidity and erosion. These are not works that can be rushed. Each piece takes days, with multiple processes layered together, elements fired separately and then assembled into richly textured compositions. Some surfaces are smooth and sinuous, others jagged, their edges a reminder of the sharpness that has left Jo’s hands permanently scarred. She jokes that her expertise could be measured in cuts rather than hours, but the truth is she has long surpassed the 10,000-hour threshold for mastery.

Yet artistry alone does not sustain a business. Last year, rising rents, soaring energy costs and the wider economic climate left Jo facing a stark choice: expand or contract. In business terms, this is often the point where owners either consolidate to protect cash flow or take the calculated risk of widening their reach. For many, contraction is the safer option –reducing overheads, streamlining operations and weathering the storm until conditions improve. However, contraction can also lead to a loss of visibility, a shrinking customer base, and a gradual erosion of brand presence. The numbers told their own story; the model that had served her for years was no longer sustainable without change.

Against cautious advice, she chose to take a risk and grow. Expansion, when executed strategically, can open new revenue streams, spread risk across multiple locations and reinforce brand recognition. Opening new galleries in Truro and Dartmouth was as much a survival strategy as it was an act of optimism.

The Truro space, taken on for an initial threemonth trial, exceeded expectations and became permanent. Dartmouth, suggested years earlier by her father, who knew of the town’s appreciation for fine craft, proved equally successful, demonstrating that growth, though risky, can be the more resilient path.

Expansion, however, meant confronting her role in the company. The creative passion that launched her career often conflicted with the demands of management. The solution lay in stepping back from some of the day-to-day running of the business, allowing her to focus on the work only she could do – creating. This shift has been transformative, restoring the balance between artist and business owner.

Her approach to teaching mirrors her own path. In her master classes, she encourages experimentation over rigid technique, inviting students to embrace uncertainty and discover possibilities through play. When she began, glass fusing was sparsely documented, so she learned through trial and error. That process of discovery, of finding the medium’s limits by pushing past them, remains at the heart of her work

The Spanish retreat was a natural extension of this philosophy. Working in a modest mountain village with a small kiln, she had the time and headspace to follow ideas to their conclusion without external pressure. The resulting pieces are like three-dimensional sketches, layered with colour and texture, and they disappear from galleries as quickly as they arrive.

Public exposure has only fuelled this momentum. When BBC Spotlight filmed a segment on the challenges facing creative businesses, Jo’s work featured prominently. Within hours of broadcast, several pieces had sold. More recently, her stand at the Royal Cornwall Show drew visitors who recognised her from television, underlining how excellence in craft can cut through the noise. The decision to expand beyond Cornwall was also strategic. While her home in Cornwall remains her creative anchor, new audiences were essential for growth. Dartmouth’s thriving artistic community and visitor profile were a natural fit. Further afield, her Sunningdale gallery, which also hosts special workshops, has introduced her work to yet another appreciative market.

The techniques refined in Spain are now evolving further in Cornwall’s larger kilns, allowing for bigger, more ambitious pieces. The combination of small-scale experimentation and large-scale production capability represents the maturation of her practice, a balance between intimate creativity and bold output.

ê BELOW Truro Gallery

Despite technological progress, her relationship with the material remains physical. The heat of the kiln alters the raw substances, but each piece still bears subtle marks of the hands that crafted it. In a world of mass-produced objects, that human touch is what endows her work with its enduring value.

Looking ahead, Jo plans to maintain the rhythm that now works so well: periods of creative retreat, followed by the unveiling of new work through her galleries. Her master classes will continue, passing on the lessons of decades spent at the glass face to those eager to learn. Above all, she is determined that growth will never come at the expense of creativity.

Her journey, from bedroom studio to multisite operation, shows that even in challenging times, creative businesses can flourish when they stay true to the reason they began. Adaptation is essential, but the vision that drives the work must remain constant.

Jo Downs has galleries in the following places: Launceston, St Ives, Padstow, Fowey, Tintagel, Sunningdale, Truro and Dartmouth.

CONSERVATORIES

PHandcrafted Cornish conservatories designed to reflect every colour preference. as too complex or unconventional.

hilip Whear Windows & Conservatories began life 40 years ago in Cornwall and today operates from their factory and showroom in Redruth, designing and constructing conservatories, doors, windows and more, all under one roof. This long-standing family firm, established in 1985, handles every stage of production, from initial ideas to the base work and final fitting, drawing on a reputation for practical craftsmanship and reliable after-sales support. The factory’s on-site paint booth allows for reproduction of customers’ existing colour tones, ensuring that new additions integrate harmoniously with the original property, as in one project where the conservatory’s frames were matched precisely to the client’s palette.

In a recent local commission, a retired couple with a passion for bold interior design selected a conservatory that would complement their timber-clad new build, reflecting both the architecture and the owners’ expressive style. The result is a year-round living area that pulses with colour, offering flexibility and utility rather than just aesthetic appeal. The conservatory doesn’t try to blend into the background but enhances usable space in a way that respects the clients’ distinctive style.

The company is known for taking on projects that others might regard as too complex or unconventional. With all manufacturing of uPVC done inhouse, clients can even tour the workshop to understand the build process and visualise how their conservatory will look. Reviews from customers frequently mention solid build quality, courteous installation teams, and a smooth project experience from survey through completion.

Whether the project demands vivid colour choices, far removed from typical muted palettes, or unique structural forms, Philip Whear delivers outcomes that work. It’s a grounded business of proven methods, skilled teams and thoughtfully crafted glass living spaces that serve homeowners throughout Cornwall.

DRIVEWAYSMore than just

Adjust your perspective and embrace a surface that has multiple applications.

When most people think of resin bound surfaces, driveways are usually the first application that comes to mind. However, Oltco has built a reputation that extends far beyond driveways. With an innovative approach and a strong commitment to sustainability, the company transforms a variety of outdoor spaces, including patios, pathways, pool surrounds and commercial areas.

Resin bound surfaces from Oltco combine visual appeal with practicality. Their lowmaintenance, anti-slip finish makes them ideal for spaces that need to perform well and look attractive throughout the year. From sun-drenched patios to winding garden paths, these surfaces remain safe, smooth and functional in every season.

For pool surrounds and garden areas in particular, the permeability of resin bound surfacing is a key advantage. Water drains through easily, reducing the risk of flooding, puddles, and slipperiness – an important consideration for households with children, pets, or anyone seeking added peace of mind.

Beyond practicality, Oltco champions environmental responsibility through its pioneering Recycle Bound system.

This innovation transforms plastic waste into durable surfacing, with every square metre using the equivalent of over 3,000 plastic straws. Each installation not only enhances an outdoor space but also contributes to reducing plastic pollution.

Customisation is central to Oltco’s offering. A wide range of blends and finishes allows homeowners to choose a style that complements their property, whether they prefer a coastal-inspired aesthetic, a sleek modern look, or a timeless classic.

Although the company is widely known for its driveway solutions, Oltco delivers much more. By combining beauty, durability, and purpose, they help customers reimagine their outdoor spaces with surfaces designed to last and built to make a positive impact.

SPECIALISTSCornwall's sleep

The

UK's oldest independent furniture store champions premium mattresses.

The showroom on Clarence Street, Penzance might seem traditional, but Alfred Smith & Son has built one of Cornwall's most comprehensive sleep centres through careful modernisation and shrewd commercial instincts. The oldest independent furniture retailer in the country, established in 1811, now spans four floors, showcasing premium bedding from manufacturers including Hypnos, Harrison Spinks, Relyon, Rest Assured, Silentnight and Enchanted House.

Following an extension fourteen years ago, the team increased their range of beds from leading manufacturers, creating what may be the West Country's largest display of sleep solutions. The expansion demonstrates how traditional retailers can adapt without losing their core identity. Where many independent stores struggle against online competition, Alfred Smith & Son has invested in experiences that customers cannot replicate digitally.

The Harrison Spinks Diamond mattress exemplifies this premium approach, featuring 25,000 springs across multiple systems, including the award-winning Cortec Quad technology. Its seasonal design offers warming wool for winter and cooling cotton for summer months. Similarly impressive is the Enchanted House Llanhydrock, crafted from hand-teased Cornish wool, horsetail, silk and cotton with 2,000 traditional pocket springs.

Such technical sophistication requires knowledgeable staff who understand spring tensions, comfort grades and the complex relationship between sleep surfaces and spinal alignment. The company is now run by Alfred Smith's great-granddaughter, Sue, and her husband, Marcus, ensuring continuity of expertise across generations whilst embracing modern retail practices.

The free delivery and installation service within Cornwall and a disposal option removes any barriers to purchasing a new mattress or bed.

Many customers find that replacing an old mattress improves their sleep quality more significantly than costly bedroom makeovers. Alfred Smith & Son recognises this, positioning itself not just as furniture retailers but as sleep consultants.

Many of their mattresses are in stock, meeting modern consumers' expectations for instant availability while still offering the personal service that sets independent retailers apart from larger chains. The result is a business model that honours its heritage while fulfilling contemporary needs.

Cornish firm Kernow Springs delivers custom saunas, blending style and performance.

Cornish company Kernow Springs has become central to a movement that has transformed how people view sauna bathing. What was once considered an occasional luxury is now, for many, part of a daily routine. Across the South West, public saunas have appeared on beaches, in hotel grounds, and even in car parks, while homeowners are increasingly choosing to install them in their gardens.

Director Martin Dean has witnessed this change first-hand. “We’ve been building bespoke saunas for over ten years,” he says. “Since the pandemic, interest has surged. People are investing in their wellbeing and rethinking how they spend time with others. Going to the sauna is the new pub!”

Kernow Springs builds every sauna to order, a process Martin describes as balancing form and function. “Good design has to be both beautiful and functional in equal measure,” he explains. Their structures come in a variety of shapes –Barrel, Box, Arch, Oval and Roundhouse – with the choice of wood-fired or electric heating. Curved lines are favoured over sharp corners, a design decision that, as Martin notes, “honours the Loyly, the steam that defines the sauna experience, while helping the building blend into its surroundings.”

The company’s portfolio spans compact twoperson barrels, ideal for private gardens, to large-scale commissions such as a 35-person Roundhouse events sauna created for The Park resort in Mawgan Porth. Each build is tailored to its location and the client’s requirements, with options to personalise finishes and features.

For those curious about the experience, Kernow Springs operates an interactive showroom at The Saltbox in Wadebridge. Here, visitors can book a session in the Nordic spa, gaining a sense of how the heat, design and materials combine.

For Martin and his team, the rise in sauna culture is about creating spaces where people can reconnect with others and realign themselves with the natural world. Whether it is a small garden build or a structure designed to host dozens, each project is crafted to meet these expectations.

Reliable window and door installations from one of Cornwall’s trusted experts.

Collingtons and Co began life in 1969 as a family-run venture and has steadily grown into one of West Cornwall’s foremost providers of windows, doors and conservatories. The company is FENSA registered, ensuring that every installation conforms to building regulations and prides itself on offering honest advice rather than high-pressure sales pitches.

Today, the business offers an extensive portfolio of products. Their windows include energy-efficient double-glazed units in standard and flush casements, sliding sash types (as an official Bygone installer), uPVC and aluminium options – all custom-made and available in a range of finishes, including woodgrain, black, grey, or green. The door selections mirror this wide variety: uPVC entrance doors, Apeer 70 mm GRP composite doors in traditional or modern styles, French doors, patio sliders, bi-fold systems, stable and single configurations. Each option can be customised in a palette of colours and furniture fittings to suit the home's aesthetic and personal taste.

One of Collingtons’ key strengths is its integrated approach. The installation team consists of skilled tradesmen employed directly by the company, ensuring quality control from initial survey to finishing touches. All installations come with a tenyear guarantee, supported by manufacturer

warranties on furniture and fittings, and servicing and repairs are available should any component need attention.

Clients can begin the process without a callout fee; Collingtons’ team will visit to discuss requirements, or visitors are welcome to the Helston showroom at 16 Water-Ma-Trout to view the full range in person. The company covers the entire West Cornwall area and, over the years, has built a reputation for combining competitive pricing with high-quality workmanship, a reputation grounded in decades of industry experience and a familystyle, hands-on approach.

Whether the task is residential or commercial, new installations or maintenance of existing windows or doors, Collingtons delivers solutions that balance practicality, durability and design integrity. Customers benefit from modern materials and fitting techniques paired with down-to-earth service and full aftercare. For those seeking to update windows or doors in West Cornwall, the company offers a dependable route to long-lasting results.

Versatile and PRACTICAL

By design, window shutters offer a level of versatility that curtains and blinds simply cannot match. They provide a striking balance of light control, privacy and aesthetic appeal that is hard to rival. As interior trends evolve and homeowners demand more practical, stylish window solutions, shutters increasingly outshine traditional soft furnishings.

More than a decade ago, Andrew Cook identified this shifting appetite among homeowners and interior designers.

Recognising that curtains and blinds, while popular for centuries, no longer met modern demands for energy performance, durability and design, he anticipated shutters would rise as the premier window covering. Acting on that insight, he founded Just Shutters in Newquay, Cornwall. His business vision quickly led to regional success, and ultimately, a family relocation to Cornwall to grow the enterprise further.

Today, Just Shutters has become a vital part of the Cornish home market. Based in Newquay and covering all of Cornwall (and Devon), the company offers a personalised service that caters equally to long-term residents and holiday let owners alike. Their modern process integrates online consultations via Zoom or FaceTime, allowing homeowners to make informed decisions without needing to be physically present. Professional installation by their expert team means most shutter installations are completed within two to three hours, a crucial advantage for holiday changeover schedules.

The appeal of plantation shutters lies not only in their efficiency but in their broad design possibilities. Just Shutters offers a vast selection of materials, colours, and finishes, many exclusive to their brand. Options include classic smaller louvres with central tilt-rods for traditional interiors, and wide-panel shutters with sleek contours for contemporary homes.

They can also craft café-style, tier-on-tier, tracked or shaped shutters, even triangular, arched, or porthole designs, for almost any window configuration. This flexibility ensures shutters enhance both interior décor and exterior kerb appeal, imparting a subtle continental chic to every property.

Although shutters often carry a higher upfront price than curtains or blinds, they offer unmatched long-term value. Plantation shutters not only look elegant and timeless, but they’re also exceptionally durable – they won’t warp, fade, or discolour and they’re repairable should damage occur. Just Shutters supports this longevity with an industry-leading lifetime guarantee, underlining the reliability of their workmanship and materials.

Energy efficiency is a standout benefit of choosing shutters. Plantation shutters can improve thermal efficiency by up to 40%, trapping a layer of air between the window and the shutter to reduce heat transfer and UV damage. Research by Glasgow Caledonian University highlights that shutters can reduce heat loss by as much as 51%, significantly outperforming blinds or curtains. These gains translate into tangible savings with typical households able to reduce energy costs by £110–£290 per year simply by installing highquality shutters.

In addition to thermal performance, shutters also contribute to acoustic comfort. Their solid construction helps dampen outside noise, from traffic to rainy Cornish weather, providing quieter, more peaceful interiors. They’re also child- and petfriendly: no dangling cords, no fabric hazards, and secure fittings mean added safety in family homes. What’s more, with fewer dusty fabrics around, shutters support allergy reduction and promote a cleaner living environment.

From a wellbeing perspective, modern studies underscore the mental and physical benefits of optimised natural light. Plantation shutters let you precisely control daylight – reducing glare, managing intensity, and preserving views while enhancing privacy. This creates a more comfortable, healthier indoor environment, promoting better sleep, mood and productivity.

Maintenance is refreshingly simple: a light dusting every so often keeps shutters looking pristine – and you’ll never need to launder, dry-clean, or replace them as you would with curtains or blinds.

Shutters also add solid resale value. As a fixture, they remain with the home, and prospective buyers frequently view them as an upgrade, boosting attractiveness and potential sale price.

Just Shutters differentiates itself by specialising exclusively in plantation shutters –they don’t offer them as a side product alongside curtains or blinds. The team delivers expert design, meticulous bespoke craftsmanship, and professional installation covering even the most unusual window shapes. Checkatrade reviews consistently rate them 9.9–10/10 for workmanship, reliability and customer service, with many repeat customers recommending them over again.

Whether you’re looking at a coastal holiday let in Cornwall or upgrading an everyday home, their blend of tailored design, installation speed, aesthetic quality, environmental performance and ongoing support makes their shutters an investment worth considering.

In conclusion, Just Shutters deliver more than just window dressing. They integrate style, durability, energy efficiency, comfort and value, backed by expert local service and the reassurance of a lifetime guarantee. For many homeowners and designers, shutters are the ideal solution.

Power for the

FUTURE

A Cornish firm delivering renewable energy solutions across the South West.

Founded in 2011 in Helston, GreenGenUK has become a trusted name in renewable energy installations throughout Cornwall, Devon and Somerset. Their expertise spans air- and ground-source heat pumps, solar photovoltaics, solar thermal, battery storage and electric vehicle charging. Whether working on domestic or commercial projects, the company focuses on designing integrated systems that provide tangible savings and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

This winter, demand for efficient heating is expected to surge. By booking an air source heat pump installation now, customers can be ready before the cold sets in. GreenGenUK helps clients access the government’s Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which currently offers a £7,500 grant towards heat pump systems. By pairing a heat pump with solar PV, homeowners can generate their own electricity, further offsetting running costs. Battery storage enhances these savings, allowing surplus solar energy to be stored or electricity to be purchased during lowrate tariff periods, sometimes as little as 8.5p per kWh.

Last year, GreenGenUK completed around one-third of all Boiler Upgrade Scheme heat pump installations in Cornwall, demonstrating both capacity and local reach. This is set to expand, with enhanced financing options, insurance cover and the support of a broader installer network.

From the outset, the company has prioritised clear advice and tailored solutions. A free, noobligation consultation ensures every system is designed around the property’s needs, meeting MCS accreditation standards and government approval. This commitment to quality is matched by an understanding of the region’s energy demands, enabling installations that perform reliably year-round.

For those considering the switch to renewable energy, GreenGenUK offers a route to lower energy bills, increased property value, and a reduced carbon footprint. Their approach balances technical know-how with a practical understanding of incentives, tariffs and the economics of home heating. With energy prices being unpredictable and environmental targets tightening, investing now in a futureproof heating and power system could be one of the most valuable decisions a homeowner makes.

GreenGenUK’s record speaks for itself: grounded expertise, strong local presence and the resources to deliver results across the South West.

Boundaries for

EVERY SEASON

Reliable protection and style with ColourFence from Gardens Made Easy.

Autumn’s arrival prompts the annual checklist of home and garden tasks, from clearing leaves to draining hoses. It is also the right moment to assess something many overlook until it fails – the garden boundary. Recent storms, such as Floris, have shown that high winds can strike in any season, bringing with them the risk of damage from loose panels and failing posts. With weather patterns shifting and gales growing less predictable, ensuring the perimeter of a property is secure has become a practical necessity rather than an optional upgrade.

Gardens Made Easy (formerly Colourfence Cornwall) has been supplying and installing ColourFence in Cornwall for the past 11 years. This robust fencing system is designed to withstand even the harshest conditions. Constructed from high-tensile steel, it can withstand gusts of up to 130mph. The finish is durable, resistant to corrosion and requires minimal upkeep, eliminating the rot, warping and regular repainting associated with timber fencing. Once in place, it offers years of reliable service without the cycle of seasonal repairs. Beyond strength, ColourFence provides choice. Available in a range of colours and configurations, it allows homeowners to match their boundary to the character of their property, whether aiming for a clean

contemporary look or something more traditional. Its design is engineered not only for resilience but also for a neat, consistent appearance that endures.

A well-maintained fence contributes to security, deterring intrusions and reducing the risk of debris damage during storms. It also plays a role in defining and protecting garden spaces, which for many are valued extensions of the home. By acting now, before winter’s strongest winds arrive, homeowners can secure peace of mind and reduce the likelihood of urgent repairs in the colder months.

Gardens Made Easy offers a full service from site survey through to installation, ensuring each fence is tailored to the location and requirements. Their experienced team handles every stage, allowing customers to invest in a boundary that looks as good as it performs. For those considering a replacement or an upgrade, ColourFence is a practical, long-term solution that brings resilience, low maintenance and style together in one installation – ready for whatever the weather may bring.

WITH PURPOSE Interior design

Elevate your living space for yourself or as an aid to increase the return on your property investment.

Transforming a space requires more than desire; it demands experience, understanding and the ability to translate ideas into environments that work. Mylor Interior Design, founded by Ally and Kim, brings together twenty-five years of combined expertise gained in both London and Cornwall. Their partnership blends different skills, enabling them to handle projects that range from subtle refurbishments to complete overhauls.

Each project begins with a consultation designed to capture the client’s vision. Sometimes inspiration comes from a single object – an inherited chair, a painting, a colour. From this, they craft a mood board, first digitally and later as a physical sample board, helping clients to visualise and refine the direction. This structured process ensures decisions are made with confidence wrought around a prescribed framework.

Mylor Interior Design also offers flexibility in how they work. Their services can be taken as a full package, from concept through to final installation, or at individual stages depending on need. Their development phase focuses on the careful selection of materials – paint, wallpapers, furniture, and finishes – while the realisation stage covers procurement

and coordination with trusted suppliers and trades. Their network extends across Cornwall, the South West and beyond.

They also bring specialist insight into holiday letting properties. Their designled approach has been shown to improve booking rates, making them a valuable partner for owners seeking to maximise appeal. Similarly, for homeowners preparing to sell, thoughtful design interventions can make a marked difference to the eventual sale price.

With every project, Ally and Kim balance creativity with cost awareness, tailoring solutions that reflect both the client’s ideas and budget. They believe good design should not only look right but also feel right, functioning as an integral part of daily life.

For those contemplating a refresh, whether it’s a single room, an entire home, or an investment property, Mylor Interior Design provides the expertise to bring ideas into focus and turn plans into reality.

Wandering the coast path

Situated in the stunning coastal village of Polzeath, Whitewater Contemporary specialises in painting, sculpture, ceramics, handmade prints and craft by Cornwall’s leading contemporary artists.

From the 16th August to 10th September the gallery will be hosting an exhibition by Cornwall’s own John Brenton.

With a focus on the spectacular coastline of North Cornwall, these new paintings capture the beauty of views from the famous South West Coast Path. The collection begins in Padstow, taking the ferry across to Rock and walking the coast path north eastward, via St Enodoc church and its views of the Camel estuary, eventually concluding in Lundy Bay. John works with a vivid palette of ocean blues and brings the

gold and silver of Cornwall’s ever-changing light, and the textures of coastal gorse and grasses, into his paintings through a rich pattern of brush work.

John Brenton was born in Cornwall in 1964. Over more than two decades he has made his name as a respected ‘plein air’ painter of landscapes from the coast of Cornwall to the lochs of Scotland. His work has been selected for exhibition at the Royal Academy Summer Show, the Royal Society of British Artists and the Royal Society of Oil Painters. He has held solo exhibitions throughout the UK and his paintings are held in private collections in the UK and internationally.

Positivity in the dark

Emily Penfold is a British multidisciplinary artist and designer who creates exquisite original fine art pencil, pen and ink drawings that explore life’s fragility, seeking out the magic in the unexpected and highlighting the delicacy beneath the surface. She aims to challenge people to find light and positivity in darkness and is particularly inspired by viewing life as a cycle rather than a linear journey.

An example of her work is this limited edition giclée print, entitled Carriage of

Golden Souls, hand-embellished with 23-carat gold leaf. Ancient Europeans believed that the seahorse carried the souls of deceased sailors to the underworld. They are considered protectors during the soul’s passage through the spiritual vortex until reaching their fated destination. The golden thread of life is entwined with these delicate and beautiful creatures.

Autumn display

From the 16th October to the 15th November, Terre Verte Gallery is featuring a retrospective exhibition of the work of Jacqueline Jarvis.

She is an artist who has been painting time in North Cornwall for more than thirty years, whether it is the landscape’s changing seasons, the movement of the moon, the growth and decay of plants, or the passing trauma and trivia of human lives. This latest exhibition features work created throughout her career, including several of her large-scale artworks, painted daily in bands and lines that reveal the vagaries of time as well as space. These large epic pieces, her luminous watercolours and gorgeous etchings bear witness to skill, perception and sensitivity evolved over a lifetime on the North Cornwall coast.

Terre Verte gallery is located in the delightful moorland village of Altarnun, just off the A30 on the fringe of Bodmin Moor. The gallery is open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays 10am till 5pm.

Carving with

INTENT

Hand-carved tiles that elevate spaces inside and out.

At the heart of Alchemy Tiles is Mel Chambers, a maker whose dedication to an ancient craft has set her apart from the world of homogenised interiors. Specialising in encaustic tiles, Mel revives a technique that dates back to the 13th century, where designs are carved and inlaid rather than painted. This method, rarely practised today, ensures each piece is both durable and imbued with character. While encaustic tiles are often associated with restoration work, Mel has extended their relevance, applying the technique to contemporary spaces where longevity and individuality matter.

Operating as a sole trader under Alchemy Tiles, Mel brings every project to life herself. From design to installation, her process is hands-on, ensuring consistency and an attention to detail that clients value. The tiles are not standardised; each is crafted to fit the intended space precisely, creating installations that feel integral to their surroundings rather than imposed upon them. This personal approach has led to recognition, with Alchemy Tiles winning “Best Handcrafted Tile Company” at the SME Southern Enterprise Awards five times and securing another nomination for 2025.

Collaboration plays a central role in Mel’s work. She approaches every commission as a dialogue, encouraging clients to contribute their ideas and emotions to the design process. This results in tiles that not only decorate, they tell stories, carrying a resonance that mass-produced alternatives cannot replicate. Whether enhancing a courtyard, a bathroom, or a feature wall, the installations hold a sense of permanence, their beauty enduring much like the medieval examples that continue to inspire her.

Mel’s passion lies in transformation: taking a blank wall or floor and reimagining it through the lens of craftsmanship. The outcome is as much about the process as the finished surface, each project bearing the marks of collaboration, skill and care. For those seeking more than decoration, Alchemy Tiles offers an encounter with a craft that still has the power to surprise and delight.

From tide TO TABLE

The mighty Atlantic Ocean not only shapes our coastline, it writes our menus, sustains our communities and connects us to centuries of maritime heritage.

There’s a particular kind of magic to Cornwall’s coastline. We always think about how beautiful the Cornish sea is, however it is also a source of one of our biggest industries. Cornwall’s waters are some of the richest in the UK, warmed by the Gulf Stream and blessed with an abundance of species. The diversity of our catch isn’t just an accident of geography, it’s a result of generations of fishing knowledge and a careful respect for seasonality. That’s something any chef worth their salt here knows: the sea decides the menu.

While tourists often think first of sandy beaches and cream teas, the beating heart of many Cornish towns is still the harbour. Towns and villages such as Porthleven, Newlyn, Looe, Mevagissey, St Ives, Falmouth, Cadgwith, Port Isaac and Padstow, all have fleets that head out daily, bringing in everything from sardines (pilchards, as the locals still call them), mackerel and gurnard, to the more luxurious line caught sea bass, John Dory, monkfish, Dover soles, turbot and brill. Lobster, crawfish and Cornish crab abound, as does shellfish such as oysters, mussels, clams and razor clams – caught in pots, gathered or, in the case of scallops,

hand dived. It is a chef’s dream to have such fantastic produce on our doorstep. For chefs in Cornwall, these communities aren’t just suppliers, they’re collaborators. A fisherman might call ahead to say the crab pots are yielding particularly good browns this week, or that the mackerel are running fat and full-flavoured after a season of plentiful feed. This direct relationship means the food that arrives on the plate often feels like a continuation of the work done at sea.

One of the greatest strengths of Cornish seafood cookery is its seasonality. Spring might see the arrival of spider crab, sweet and delicate, perfect in salads or lightly dressed with lemon and mayonnaise. Early summer brings mackerel in abundance, rich and oily, ideal for grilling over coals or curing into a tangy escabeche. Autumn is the time for plump scallops and winter rewards the patient with meaty monkfish and firm, cold-water cod. This seasonal ebb and flow keeps menus alive. You won’t see lobster in February unless it’s been responsibly stored; you won’t find fresh sardines in mid-winter. There’s a trust in letting the natural cycle dictate what’s cooked – a philosophy that not only yields better flavour but also supports sustainable fishing.

Jude Kereama in Kota

Cornish seafood is so good that it rarely needs complicated treatment. A simple whole plaice, pan-fried in a little butter with samphire and a squeeze of lemon, can be as transcendent as any fine-dining plate. That’s not to say we don’t enjoy creativity; our chefs have taken traditional dishes and given them modern twists. Think mussels with yellow curry mouclade and apple, smoked mackerel pâté with rhubarb, and pickled cucumber, or oysters wrapped in potato spaghetti with dashi mayo and furikake spices. Many recipes here are built on balance, respecting the natural sweetness of scallops, the briny punch of clams, or the robust depth of hake.

A fisherman’s stew (cioppino or bouillabaisse in other corners of the world) might include a jumble of whatever’s come in that day, simmered gently with saffron, garlic, and fennel. In Cornwall, the sea writes its own recipes; we just interpret them.

Over the last decade, shellfish has become something of a star in Cornwall’s food story. The once-overlooked spider crab is now recognised for its delicate flavour, rivaling more expensive crustaceans. Mussel farms in the Fal and Helford estuaries produce plump, briny mussels that steam open into bowls of garlicky broth, perfect for mopping up with crusty bread. Oysters, too, have returned to the spotlight, especially with the revival of the Fal Oyster Festival. Grown in some of the cleanest waters in the country, these oysters have a unique minerality giving them a taste of the river as much as the sea. Served raw with just a dash of shallot vinegar, they’re pure Cornish luxury. Also, a firm favourite is a Porthilly oyster; these Pacific oysters are particularly delicious.

Modern Cornish seafood cookery can’t ignore sustainability. The seas are a finite resource and the future of our fishing communities depends on responsible practice. Many of our fishermen work under strict quotas, use selective gear to avoid

bycatch, and fish in ways that preserve marine habitats. Restaurants are increasingly transparent about where their fish comes from, often naming the boat, the skipper, and the method of catch on the menu. We’ve also embraced under-utilised species. Instead of always reaching for bass or cod, chefs are turning to gurnard, whiting, and ling –delicious fish that take the pressure off more vulnerable stocks. This openness to variety has expanded the Cornish palate and kept menus interesting.

If you visit Cornwall and order seafood, there’s a good chance it was landed within hours of you eating it. That immediacy is part of the magic. The morning’s catch might be served for lunch, still firm and sweet from the cold Atlantic. Even home cooks benefit as fishmongers in towns and villages are often stocked with whatever has been landed that day and it’s not uncommon to see locals buying a couple of mackerel to grill for supper.

In the end, Cornwall’s relationship with seafood is as much about identity as it is about flavour. It’s about knowing that when you taste a spoonful of fish stew, you’re tasting the result of centuries of knowledge, hard work, and respect for the sea. It’s about seeing the boats at anchor and feeling the quiet pride of a community whose livelihood depends on those waters. Here, seafood isn’t a luxury, it’s a way of life. And as long as the tide keeps turning, Cornwall will keep serving up the best the sea has to offer: fresh, honest, and utterly unforgettable.

Tide, Thread

AND TENACITY

Ten years of Cornwall-infused coastal style, told with cloth and character.

Padstow is a town shaped by stories. Some arrive on the tide; others are cut from cloth. Over the past decade, one such tale has quietly unfolded on the high street – that of Aloft, a female-led clothing and lifestyle store that has grown from quiet beginnings into a distinctive thread in the town’s identity.

Founded in 2014, Aloft was born of a simple but resolute idea: that style could speak in the language of the landscape. Not borrowed from catwalks or glossy campaigns, but drawn from salt air, sailcloth, slow skies and the grounded rhythm of Cornish life. The shop’s collections, thoughtful, unhurried, and quietly confident, reflect a way of dressing that doesn’t demand attention but earns it over time.

Ten years on, Aloft remains true to its origins. Its racks carry clothes that feel lived in from the moment they’re tried on. Cotton softened like seafoam, blues and greys that echo granite and gulls, details that are as tactile as they are unassuming. The aesthetic here is not about invention but homage – a gentle nod to life lived near water, wind and wide skies. For regular visitors and first-time

wanderers alike, the shop offers something rarer than trend, it offers authenticity.

As Aloft celebrates its tenth anniversary this summer, the milestone is being marked with typical understatement. Stories will be shared — not just of growth and success, but of grit and resilience, of surviving retail’s lean years and the unseen work of building something lasting in a place where the seasons shape everything. Competitions and in-store events will honour the journey, while the team continues to look forward with the same clarity that started it all.

In a world cluttered with noise, Aloft offers something quieter, more grounded – a way of dressing that wears its sense of place with understated veracity.

Visit their website or, if you’re in the area, head to one of their outlets in Padstow, Loddiswell or Salcombe.

IN STONERural revival

A contemporary Cornish dwelling reinterprets vernacular tradition with exceptional sustainability credentials.

In a fold in the Cornish landscape near St Tudy stands Ladybird Farm, a dwelling that speaks succinctly of architectural evolution while honouring its rural heritage. This replacement home, constructed on the footprint of a former traditional cottage that had suffered from unsympathetic mid-century alterations, demonstrates how contemporary sustainable design can coexist harmoniously within an historical context.

The building's genesis came from necessity rather than indulgence. The original structure, having reached the end of its maintainable life, presented significant challenges – damp issues, poor energy efficiency and compromised architectural integrity. Given its proximity to a Grade II-listed property and curtilage Listed walled garden, any intervention needed to be executed with particular sensitivity and respect.

Initial plans to refurbish the existing building proved financially unviable after detailed costing exercises. This revelation led to a fundamental reconsideration of approach –rather than working within the constraints of a deteriorating structure, ARCO2 proposed

creating an uncompromised dwelling that would better serve contemporary living standards while achieving exceptional sustainability metrics.

The resulting design embodies traditional vernacular form with distinctly modern execution. Twelve existing outbuildings were removed, significantly enhancing the setting of the nearby Grade II Listed Tamsquite House. The new structure presents a natural stone gable end and traditional slate roof with close mitred hip and terracotta ridge tiles – elements that anchor it firmly within its farmstead setting.

What distinguishes Ladybird Farm, however, is the thoughtful integration of contemporary elements. A copper entrance walkway elegantly screens vehicles while helping to form an enclosed walled garden. Natural untreated timber cladding brings warmth and texture to the south-facing aspect. The carefully considered placement of windows minimises impact on the neighbouring Listed property while maintaining connection to the surrounding landscape.

The interior layout reflects modern living patterns while preserving traditional spatial qualities. The first floor presents as an openplan barn supported by scissor trusses, creating an airy, light-filled space. A doublesided wood burner separates kitchen and dining areas from comfortable seating zones. The lounge maintains visual connection to the dining area while offering a degree of seclusion – the perfect vantage point for enjoying sweeping views across farmers' fields and the valley beyond.

Technical excellence underpins the project's environmental credentials. The building achieves passive house insulation levels and demonstrates remarkable energy efficiency with an operational carbon footprint of just 15kWh/m² per year – approximately one-tenth that of an average dwelling. The construction utilised a Cornish ICF system with XPS insulation, creating an exceptionally tight building envelope as evidenced by impressive air pressure test results.

Material selection proceeded with meticulous attention to sustainability and longevity.

Local stone, lime render, untreated timber and natural slate form the primary palette – materials that weather gracefully while requiring minimal maintenance. Concrete incorporating secondary aggregates from Cornwall's clay industry reduced embodied carbon, while elements like Warmcel recycled newspaper insulation actively sequester carbon. The zinc rainwater goods and tripleglazed windows were selected for their durability and recyclability.

Ecological considerations extended beyond energy performance. When approximately 2,000 bat droppings were discovered during

initial surveys, comprehensive mitigation measures were implemented. The finished building incorporates four integral bat boxes and a dedicated loft space for brown long-eared bats. Additional features include a sparrow terrace and bee block, enhancing biodiversity.

Construction waste management diverted 75% from the landfill, with the remaining materials repurposed on-site. Original rag slates were carefully preserved for future repairs to the Listed house, while blockwork was crushed for hardcore and access tracks.

The client's testimonial speaks to the project's success: “ARCO2 provided a thoroughly high quality and professional service from our initial enquiries until completion. Their attention to detail is very impressive. Ian's enthusiasm for new ideas was able to gently persuade us to agree with them and we are delighted with our new house.”

Ladybird Farm represents architecture of genuine conviction – a building that respects its historical context while embracing forward-thinking construction techniques. It demonstrates how contemporary interventions in sensitive locations can enhance rather than diminish their surroundings, creating homes that serve their inhabitants while treading lightly upon the landscape.

As a final testament to the story the building project also won 2024’s Build It magazine’s Best ICF Award!

Confident smiles IN TRURO

The transformative power of dentistry in expert hands.

In the heart of Truro, tucked away in the quiet confines of Tinners Court, The Treatment Centre is helping to change what it means to smile with confidence.

A family-run practice with four decades of trusted care, it is a place where expertise meets warmth, and where the patient’s journey is as important as the final result.

At its helm is Anna, a highly skilled clinician whose MSc in restorative dentistry underscores her meticulous approach. Patients arrive looking for a change — to enhance their smile, ready to embrace a fresh start. Through Invisalign and cutting-edge restorative treatments, Anna and her team sculpt smiles that are not just straight and gleaming, but truly life-enhancing.

It is more than just dentistry. It is the art of renewal. Every interaction is shaped by care, by a commitment to trust, by an understanding that self-assurance often begins with something as simple as an unguarded smile. Patients describe the experience as revelatory, often expressing joy and newfound confidence in their transformed smiles. One recalls their first consultation, where treatment options were patiently explained, and their final visit, where subtle bonding touches made a longheld dream a reality.

“From the first appointment with Anna where we talked through options to the

final appointment where the finishing touches (bonding) made my smile the one I had always dreamed of, I felt relaxed, happy, and confident.”

Another speaks of the sheer joy of smiling without self-consciousness, of the confidence that lingers far beyond the treatment room: “I now smile all the time and love having my photo taken! I still get a thrill seeing a straight, lovely smile. I also feel a lot more confident talking to new people.”

This is what sets The Treatment Centre apart. It is not just about straightening teeth or perfecting alignment; it is about the restoration of confidence, the quiet transformation that allows someone to step forward without hesitation. For those who have spent too long holding back, there is reassurance in knowing that expertise and empathy go hand in hand here. In Truro’s centre, a discreet revolution in self-assurance is underway – one radiant smile at a time.

YEAR AHEAD Changes for the

You may have seen that there are yet more changes incoming at Companies House as part of the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023 (ECCTA) but may not be aware of what these latest changes mean for you as either a: professional advisor, company director, LLP member or person of significant control (PSC) – defined as someone who owns more than 25% of the share capital or has significant influence or control over a company.

A key change is the requirement for company directors, members of LLPs and PSC’s to have their identity verified with Companies House. No set date has been announced yet, but all companies will be required to have verified the identity of all of the directors, members and PSC’s before the next Companies House filing requirement (see below), starting from Autumn 2025.

If you want to get ahead of the game, the ID verification can be done now at Companies House, but it is not compulsory until Autumn 2025.

From Autumn 2025, unless the identity has been verified, no submissions will be able to be made to Companies House. For example,

Becca Blewett explains the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act changes at Companies House.

accounts and confirmation statements cannot be able to be filed without this ID verification being completed first. This also includes new company formations.

As no confirmation statements will be able to be filed without the ID verification being completed, it is the aim of Companies House to have the ID verification for all companies to be completed by Autumn 2026 (each Company/LLP needing to file a confirmation statement annually).

Failure to comply with the ID verification requirements within the required time frame may constitute an offence and could result in financial penalties or sanctions, including disqualification from being a company director.

Who can complete the ID verification?

Company directors, members and PSCs can complete the ID verification themselves via the Companies House website.

Alternatively, identity verification can be verified via an Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP). An ACSP is an agent who is authorised to file documents at Companies House on behalf of the client, an accountant,

or a formation agent for example. The ACSP will complete their ID verification and will need to confirm with Companies House that this has been done to the same standard as carried out by Companies House.

What ID verification is required?

The ID verification requirements at Companies House are different to what you may be used to for Anti-money laundering (AML) purposes.

Company directors, members and PSCs completing ID verification themselves via the Companies House website will need to follow the step by step instructions on screen and will require either a passport or photo driving licence along with the need to have a scan or photograph taken of their face (using a mobile phone – for example) in order for Companies House to compare the two using their own software and verify the identity of the person – our understanding that this process takes around 10 minutes if you have all of the required documents to hand.

If an ACSP is going to carry out ID verification, they will either need to use a robust, special ID verification software and have access to the original document, in order to check the documents in line with the standard, as would be carried out by Companies House. Just a copy of the client’s ID on file and standard AML checks will not be sufficient for these purposes.

The alternative for ACSPs would be to manually check ID documents, but they

must ensure that the staff carrying out the checks have training from a specialist training provider, such as the Home Office, in order to be able to detect ID forgeries.

Please note that once a person’s ID is verified, it will apply across all companies they are a member, director or PSC of; therefore, they will not need to do this again.

From a future date in 2026 (specific date not yet announced), only ACSPs will be permitted to file documents at Companies House on behalf of their clients, including accounts, confirmation statements and incorporations. It is therefore thought that most accountants will register as an ACSP.

Companies House will have the power to suspend or revoke an ACSP’s status if they do not meet verification standards.

Conclusion

We (RRL LLP) will be a registered ACSP to enable us to facilitate ID verification on behalf of our clients using robust identification document validation technology (IDVT) software and are currently trialling various IDVT software to comply with this.

We will be issuing further guidance to our clients over the next few months.

While there is no obligation to remember Shelter in your will, they would be very grateful for any gift you choose to make.

Shelter, the National Campaign for Homeless People Limited: Registered charity in England and Wales (263710) and in Scotland (SC002327)

Government statutory homelessness figures, released on 22nd July 2025, revealed 169,050 children are now homeless in temporary accommodation in England –this is a 12% increase in a year, the highest number since records began in 2004. This is the devastating result of a severe shortage of genuinely affordable social rent homes and inadequate levels of housing benefit that continue to trap families in homelessness.

Billy was only seven when his dad, Shandor, had an accident at work, and everything changed. The injuries left Shandor with a disability and on sick leave, but he eventually lost his job entirely. Unable to afford the rent, Shandor was placed in temporary accommodation just a day before he was forced to leave his previous home. “I couldn’t see beyond

the end of the day”, says Shandor. “I had visions of having to sleep in the car. I really was at a low ebb. It was awful.”

With guidance from Shelter, he managed to find a social home – a comfortable, secure place for him and Billy to live. This meant everything to Shandor, who recalls the joy and relief. “Security, comfort, stability.

Knowing where we’re going to be, all the possibilities… it really was spectacular.”

By leaving a gift in your will to Shelter, you can make sure they will be there for years to come – standing shoulder to shoulder with people as they fight for their housing rights.

Shelter won't give up. Not until everyone has a safe and secure place to call home. And future generations don't ever have to worry about becoming homeless.

You can make real change happen.
