Ser la primera mujer en dirigir la Cámara más antigua del país, la Cámara Minera, es una de las grandes experiencias que han marcado su vida profesional.

Es Karen Flores, quien actualmente se desempeña como Directora General en la Cámara Minera de México (Camimex).

La ejecutiva platica con Mining México sobre la situación en la industria y su relevancia para el país, los retos que enfrenta, así como las oportunidades en un sector que es cada día más vital para la economía de nuestro país, y en el cuál las mujeres tienen cada vez mayor participación.

Minería, un periodo complejo La directiva inicia la charla con un bosquejo general sobre la situación de la minería en México y en el mundo.

Como sabemos, la minería en general, el país y la humanidad, atravesamos tiempos de muchos retos derivado por supuesto de la pandemia, más otros factores políticos y económicos que impactan en el mundo.

Basta ver los indicadores como el decremento de 3.5 por ciento de la economía mundial en el año 2020, que se trata de la caída más pronunciada en 100 años; por supuesto que esto genera repercusiones en el comercio mundial, mismo que cayó 9.6 por ciento también el año pasado. Estos son algunos de los indicadores que señalan lo complejo del momento actual.

En este sentido, es un hecho que las actividades industriales como la minería tienen que convertirse no sólo en factores que contengan los efectos de la crisis y apoyen en todas las comunidades

Caminex, informe anual 2020 Karen Flores se refirió al recientemente presentado Informe Anual de la Cámara Minera de México (Camimex), en el que se destaca el hecho de cómo la minería ha mantenido su actividad como industria que no solamente fomenta el orgullo de pertenencia para todos los que trabajan en la industria sino para el propio país.

Algunos de los puntos más destacados en el informe, que confirman la relevancia del sector minero para México están ligados por ejemplo al empleo.

En lo que va de 2021 no sólo se recuperaron los empleos generados por la contracción de 2.9 por ciento en las plazas laborales perdidas durante 2020 sino que este año se han generado más de 40 mil nuevos puestos de trabajo en la industria.

Lo anterior le ha permitido a la industria minera llegar a una cifra que orgullosamente marca un hito histórico, con más de 400 mil empleos directos y más de 2.5 millones de trabajos indirectos. Lo que reafirma al sector minero como parte de la solución para la reactivación económica del país.

“Para este año es muy probable que las inversiones puedan recuperarse, hay un pronóstico de cerca de 5 mil millones de dólares en inversiones, aunque ello no quiere decir que sean inversiones que ya se están detonando, sino que se están haciendo los esfuerzos y tareas necesarias para que sean una realidad”, explicó la directiva de Camimex.

En ese sentido, destaca que algo que le hace mucha falta al sector es incentivar la exploración para no hipotecar el futuro de la minería, es muy importante porque las inversiones en esta materia han caído cerca de 60 por ciento desde 2014 con la reforma fiscal de aquel entonces en la que se eliminó la posibilidad de deducir los gastos de exploración en el primer año de operación, y eso para la minería es una etapa netamente de inversión y no de ingresos o beneficios.

Lamentablemente, México ha sufrido una caída en los índices de competitividad de la industria minera sobre todo en el rubro de seguridad, en materia fiscal y también en el aspecto laboral.

“Es muy importante que recuperemos esta competitividad para seguir detonando estos más de 5 mil millones de dólares en inversión y al mismo tiempo generar la consecuente derrama económica, empleos y los impuestos que se pagan al país”, señaló la presidenta de Camimex.

Comunicar, esencial para la industria minera Para Karen Flores, un factor muy importante en la industria minera es comunicar, la estrategia de comunicación.

“Queremos comunicar quiénes somos, qué es lo que hacemos, cuál es el bienestar que la minería genera a más de 690 comunidades en el país, en más de 212 municipios, en 24 estados de la república, y que justamente esa presencia de la minería permite generar bienestar y oportunidades de vida para gente que vive muy lejos y que si no fuera por la minería no tendría otra opción ni laboral ni de desarrollo económico o de tener acceso a calidad de vida”. Primera mujer en dirigir Camimex, experiencia inolvidable Karen Flores es la primera mujer en dirigir la cámara más antigua de todo el país, la Cámara Minera, eso no es cualquier cosa y la ejecutiva lo valora como una gran experiencia que sin duda ha marcado su carrera profesional.

“Es un gran honor, pero también una gran responsabilidad con todas las colegas mineras; las mujeres sabemos trabajar y lo sabemos hacer bien, pero en posiciones como estas lo tienes que hacer doblemente bien, justamente para dejar esta puerta abierta para todas las que vengan atrás” expresa Karen Flores.

Mujeres ganan espacios en la industria minera Las mujeres ganan cada vez más terreno en la industria minera, actualmente entre el 15 y 16 por ciento de la plantilla laboral del sector pertenece al género femenino, aproximadamente 60 mil mujeres.

Pero es todavía más relevante, de acuerdo con datos de la directiva, el crecimiento de la presencia de la mujer en la minería desde 2012 a la fecha, ya que

año con año este incremento ha sido de entre 5 y 7 por ciento; un dato todavía más interesante consiste en el hecho de que las mujeres en posiciones directivas en el último año crecieron entre 4 y 6 por ciento en las operaciones mineras.

Estas cifras señalan que, si bien el camino a recorrer todavía es mucho, también dice significan que el rumbo es el correcto.

Por ejemplo, el convenio con Mujeres WIM de México, que la Camimex firmó en el año 2019, permitió conocer a detalles muchos otros aspectos de la presencia de la mujer en la industria minera; un dato relevante consiste en que el salario de la mujer en este sector es hasta 75 por ciento superior al promedio femenil nacional.

Atreverse es el camino Una de las llaves del éxito para las mujeres, que le ha funcionado a quien dirige los destinos de Caminex, es atreverse.

“Atreverte a soñar y a prepararte para logra esa posición que tanto deseas, atreverte a decir tus ideas, a llevarlas a cabo, a no tener esos miedos que a veces son el propio techo de cristal que muchas veces las mismas mujeres traemos. Atreverte y prepararte constantemente te permite estar lista para tomar la oportunidad cuando se presente; esta preparación nunca debe de parar”.
