Director’s Note Life can be slow, or fast, or boring, or exciting. Sometimes life is all of those things in one day, like this particular day at the Shady Acres Hotel. Our tale today is a classic “who-dunnit”.

But wait! This is an Encore who-dunnit; theatre for kids, by kids. Encore loves to put children on stage, behind stage, in front of house, and in the audience. It’s time to put this last group to work helping the hard working detectives to solve this case.

Pay close attention to everything that happens in the beginning, and we do mean everything! There is lots of activity at Shady Acres. The detectives will ask you to help at intermission by completing an Informant Tip Sheet. The ushers will have Informant Tip Sheets and pencils for you. If you see anything suspicious – anything at all – let the detectives know about it.

Prior to intermission, Chief Inspector Wickfield will ask for your help as she questions the suspects. Maybe someone is not as he or she claims to be… If the suspect’s answer seems a bit fishy, write it down on your tip sheet for the detectives to follow up.

Much of the joy and fun of live theater is that you never know what will occur, and with the audience joining in, something fun is bound to happen. So don’t sit back! Don’t relax! Pay close attention and help solve the case.

About the Cast & Crew

Talia Branch (Heimlich Nein , Maraianne Bank) is a sixth grader at Kenmore Middle School in Arlington. This is her third Encore performance. She enjoys climbing trees, crocheting, knitting, painting, and baking.

Radhika Bhatnagar (Ms. Clifford) is an eighth grader at Thomas Jefferson Middle School and is thrilled to be a part of her fifth Encore production. Her previous roles have included have been as the Gander in Charlotte’s Web and Cinderella in A Fairy Tale Christmas Carol. She has also been Jack in her schools production of Last Weekend: The Musical and Olive in Newsies Jr. Her other hobbies include Tae Kwon Do, piano, tennis, and reading. Best wishes to the actors and crew, and good luck solving the mystery!

Lucy Constantine (Cathy, Tour Guide) is an eighth grader at Thomas Jefferson Middle school. She was recently in Encore’s productions of Charlotte’s Web, in which she played Charlotte. She is very excited to be in her second production with Encore, and she hopes you enjoy the show!

Anna Chretien (Backstage Crew)is a sixth grader at Williamsburg Middle School. She is excited to be working as part of the backstage crew and on her first Encore Production.

Outside theater her interests include art and her cats.

Kate Davis (Lavinia Crawford, Maid) is a ninth grader at The Village School, this is Kate’s sixth production with Encore Stage & Studio. Kate hopes you enjoy the show.

Anne “Sisi” Doucet (Miranda Banks) is a fifth grader at St. Thomas More Catheral School. Sisi enjoys playing soccer, field hockey, volleyball, hanging with her older sisters and acting. She made her theatre debut playing the role of Chip in Encore’s production of Beauty and the Beast in 2022. She is excited to be back on stage where she can “laissez les bon temps rouller” with her Encore team.

Camilla Felline (Lois Banks) is a sixth grader at Orange Hunt Elementary School. She enjoys art, history, science, and writing. This is her first Encore production and she is excited to be a part of the cast. When she is not acting, she enjoys playing dungeons and dragons with friends and drawing.

Anabelle Ferree (Basil) is a homeschooled eighth grader. This is her first Encore production, but she has been in two school musicals at TJMS, one being Newsies Jr. Outside of Encore, she enjoys playing guitar, singing, sketching and listening to music.

About the Cast & Crew

Lucienne Garcia (Beth Morgan, Maid) is a fifth grader at Taylor Elementary and very excited to be in this Encore production, her second with the company. When she is not acting, Lucienne enjoys playing basketball and volleyball, making crafts, spending time with her family, and most of all, cuddling her dog Rubi. Lucienne hopes you enjoy the show!

Lila Gorcys (PI Phylis Thornton) is a sixth grader at Swanson Middle School . She is a long-time theater lover is very excited to be in her first Encore production! Prior to joining the Mystery at Shady Acres cast she performed in several ETC Educational Theater Company productions. Outside of acting, she enjoys playing soccer with her friends, reading, dancing, and sushi.

Noah Golden (Front of House Crew) is a eighth grader at HB Woodlawn and is happy to be appearing in this production.

Eleanor Gould (Sgt. Farley O’Doyle) is a student at Thomas Jefferson Middle School. She enjoys reading and playing her fiddle. This is her third Encore production. She hopes you enjoy the show!

Ajan Goyal (Mr. Roger, Bus Driver) is enthused to be able to be a part of the first show of Encore’s season! He would not have been able to succeed in life if not for his numerous supporters. Ajan would like to thank: Bella White, Niko Godoy, Grace Butcher, Hope Lambert, David Myers, and Taylor Swift. Ajan hopes you enjoy this show! Thanks for coming!

Katie Hearne (Front of House Crew) is an eighth grader at St. Ann Catholic School. She is excited to participate in her ninth Encore production. Some of her favorite hobbies include singing, baking, and reading. She hopes you enjoy the show!

Emma Iger (Front of House Crew) is an eighth grader at Williamsburg Middle School.

Rose Jaboori (Frederica Frumpet) is a fifth grader at Alice West Fleet ES, this is Rose’s second production with Encore Stage & Studio. Rose hopes you enjoy the show!

Sarah Jones (Front of House Crew) is an eighth grader at HB Woodlawn. This is Sarah’s third production with Encore Stage & Studio. Sarah hopes you enjoy the show!

Merielle Koehn (Ms. X) is a seventh grader at Swanson Middle School. Her past Encore productions were Freaky Friday and Flip the Script: From Nauck to Green Valley. In her free time she plays tennis, makes pottery, and cuddles her pet guinea pig. She hopes you enjoy the show!

Divya Konduri (Emma Reid) is an eighth grader at Kenmore Middle School. She is so excited to be putting on her second show with Encore. Her first show was Charlotte’s Web. In her free time Divya likes to play flag football, play the violin, dance and act in shows.

Colin Lee (Front of House Crew, Props Build) is an eighth grader at Swanson Middle School. This is his fourth Encore production and his second time as a crew member.

Outside of theater, he enjoys swimming and playing basketball. Colin hopes you enjoy the show!

Julia Markowitz (Backstage Crew) is a junior at Yorktown High School and this is her sixth Encore show. Julia hopes you enjoy the show!

Anya Marwaha (Lt. Theodora Dorrit) is a sixth grader at Gunston Middle School in the Spanish Immersion program. Although this is her first Encore production, Anya has produced her own unique play and was cast as Alice in Alice in Wonderland for school.

Anya is also a gymnast, pianist, and avid reader. She also enjoys playing lacrosse, hiking, and water-skiing.

Sarah McBurney (Backstage Crew, Props Build) is a senior at Alexandria City High School. This is her 19th production with Encore, her fourth time doing crew. Most recently, Sarah was on backstage crew for Encore’s production of Charlotte’s Web, and some of her favorite previous shows include Annie Jr. (Miss Hannigan), The Hobbit (Bilbo Baggins), and Beauty and the Beast (Madame de la Grande Bouche). When she’s not doing shows with Encore, Sarah enjoys baking, and doing arts and crafts, and is involved with her school’s TV production crew. Enjoy the show!

Beatrice Misch (Blanche Fairfax) is an eighth grader at Kenmore MS. This is her eighth Encore production and is hoping to receive her Star Award at the end of this season. Her most recent Encore performance was Charlottes Web as Fern and coming up she will be preforming as the Trunchbull in her schools musical Matilda. Outside of theater she loves hiking, camping, climbing, art, and hanging out with friends. Bea hopes you enjoy the show!

Zachary Moeller (Backstage Crew) is an eighth grader at Saint Ann School in Arlington. This is his fourth show with Encore and his first time as part of the crew. He was previously in Freaky Friday, Charlotte’s Web and Annie Jr. When not on stage, Zach enjoys tennis, basketball, student council and piano. He hopes you enjoy the show.

Lucy Perryman (Officer Eleonor Black) is a 6th grader at Saint Ann Catholic School. She is the historian on the student council. When she isn’t acting or doing tech design you can find her drawing, writing, or petting her dog. This is her third Encore production. She hopes you enjoy the show and would like to give a shoutout to Quigley.

Henry Phoel (Stanley Larson) is excited to participate in his seventh Encore show.

Favorite Encore credits include Freaky Friday, Treasure Island, and Enchanted Bookshop Christmas. Outside of acting, Henry enjoys ultimate frisbee and dive. He hopes the show lights you on fire!

Cody Poole (Front of House Crew) is a seventh grade student at Gunston Middle School.

He enjoys baking and playing video games. This is Cody’s second production, having been a crew member for Freaky Friday this past summer. Outside of being on crew, Cody is looking forward to learning keyboard with the School of Rock.

Kristjana Quick (Backstage Crew) is an eighth grader at Thomas Jefferson Middle School. Mystery at Shady Acres is her second Encore production. When Kristjana is not obsessively reading, crocheting, or playing violin, she enjoys being in technical theatre.

Jenna Sheetz (Audrey Rochester) is a sophomore at Yorktown High School. She is a member of Yorktown’s Advanced Treble Choir and acapella group. Aside from singing and acting she enjoys diving, walking, bike riding and shopping.

Poppy Sipple-Asher (Patricia) is a sixth grader at St. Agnes Catholic School. She enjoys singing and dancing. Poppy is excited to be a part of The Mystery at Shady Acres, her debut performance with Encore Stage & Studio. Outside of acting, she enjoys playing soccer, volleyball, basketball, tennis, and robotics. She hopes you enjoy the show!

Ella Stearns (Myrna Werther) is an eighth grader at Mary Ellen Henderson Middle School. She enjoys acting, improv, costuming, and crafting. This is her first Encore production. Ella performed in Ten Ways to Survive a Zombie Apocalypse and You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown in Bangkok. She has studied with Stephen Stearns and Jane Baker at the New England Youth Theatre in Brattleboro, Vermont. Prior to her recent arrival in Northern Virginia, Ella has lived in Colombia, Peru, and Thailand. She is happy to become part of the Encore community.

Spencer Tilock (Edward Fairfax) is thrilled to be part of his eighth Encore production!

Spencer is a seventh grader at Glasgow Middle School where he is a Honor Student and plays the saxophone in the GMS Wind Ensemble Band. Spencer most recently organized and directed an Encore Cares community service project of Live Improv Theatre. The project also raised money for Encore’s Theatre for All! Fund to ensure that finances are not a barrier for participation in live theatre. Spencer thanks you for your support of Encore and hopes you enjoy The Mystery at Shady Acres as much as he enjoyed working on it!

Darcy Warmerdam (Greta Whyte, Maid) is a sophomore at The British International School of Washington. This is her sixth Encore production, having played Leonard Lion in What Makes A Winner and been on the Tech Crew in a variety of roles. Darcy has really enjoyed being part of Mystery at Shady Acres and hopes you enjoy the show!

Harper Warmerdam (Ingrid Brightham) is an eighth grader at The British International School of Washington. This is her seventh Encore production, having played Elizabeth Killigrew in Treasure Island, The Queen of Hearts in Fairytale Christmas Carol, Gary Grasshopper in What Makes a Winner and been on the Tech Crew in a variety of roles.

India Warmerdam (Chief Dora Wickfield) is a junior at The British International School of Washington. This is her sixth Encore production, having played Scrooge in A Fairytale Christmas Carol and been on the Tech Crew in a variety of roles. India absolutely loves being part of the Encore family and hopes you enjoy the show!

About the creative Team

Jim Clancy (Director) has been working with Encore since 2011 in a variety of roles; set construction, stage combat choreographer, Board Member and Treasurer, Director, and Flight Director (for Mary Poppins). He especially enjoys working with a cast to bring their characters to life. When not working with Encore, Jim is a faculty member and drama director at Trinity School at Meadow View, in Falls Church.

Kristen Jepperson (Technical Director, Set Design) is a graduate of the California Institute of the Artstage as well as the Studio Theater Acting Conservatory. She has toured nationally with the New Christy, Minstrels and Ragtime, The Musical (Emma, Goldman). Other roles include Studio Theater: Adding Machine, the Musical (Daisy), Jerry Springer, the Opera. (Zandra) Tobys, Dinner Theater: Nunsense, (Reverend Mother) Mame (Agnes Gooch). Olney Theater Center: Anything Goes. (Mrs Harcourt, Reno) Lazy Susan Dinner Theatre: 7 Brides for 7 Brothers (Millie) Once Upon a Mattress (Winnifred) Pajama Game (Babe) Awards include best actress in a musical WATCH award Brunhilda - Das Barbeque, Little Theater of Alexandria. Best actress in a musical ACT award, Sonia in They’re Playing Our Song, Dominion Stage. She can be seen on weekends playing the harp for high tea at the Willard Hotel.

Debra Leonard (Costume Designer, Make-up Design) is designing her 22nd season with Encore Stage & Studio. She has designed costumes for many area theatres and film companies, with over 100 productions to her credit. Debra has also designed for American University, Prince George’s Community College, and Allentown College in PA. Additionally, she works as a Special Education teacher with Prince George’s County. Debra is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Kalamazoo College, with her graduate degree from American University.

Matthew Heap (Composer, Sound Designer) has been working with Encore Stage & Studio since around 1998 as an actor, and joined the creative team as a composer (and sometime director, music director, and playwright) in 2004. Since then, he’s written music for most of their shows. Outside Encore, Matthew is an award-winning composer of stage music (musicals/opera) as well as concert music, and his pieces have been performed in venues around the world. His first full CD Dillinger: An American Oratorio (don’t listen with the kids) was released in June 2023. He teaches music composition and theory as an Associate Professor at West Virginia University.

About the creative Team

Gary Hauptman (Lighting Designer) Began with lighting Pirates of Penzance at TJ in July of 2012 and, to date, more than 50 productions, Gary is proud of the many Encore shows he has helped bring to life. He wants to express his appreciation for the people whom he has had the great pleasure to work with. This includes the staff, student actors, technicians and crew, teaching artists, Encore leadership and the many wonderfully supportive parents. Gary is dialing down on his show lighting load, letting other people share in the fun. This will leave more time for travel, sailing, hiking and biking, reading lengthy biographies and sitting in dark theaters to enjoy other people’s handiwork. He also wants to thank Debbie for her patience and endless support of Gary’s theater habits.

Kevin Curry (Sound Consultant) is currently retired from The Boeing Company. Over the last 40+ years, Kevin has worked on over 350 productions for both professional and community theaters. In that time, he has had 10 Alliance of Community Theater nominations for Best Lighting, Set Design, or Special Effects. He has won four times, most recently in 2003 for Springfield Community Theatre’s production of Godspell, for which he also earned a nomination for Best Lighting from WATCH. Abigail Houle (Front of House Manager) is a 15 year old sophomore at Washington Liberty who likes playing DnD, making art, and walking dogs. This is Abigail’s 10th Encore production.

Niko Godoy (Stage Manager) is so excited to be stage managing Mystery at Shady Acres.

About the Theatre Staff Sara Strehle Duke (Executive Director) has led Northern Virginia’s largest, award-winning children’s theatre since 2010. She was recognized as one of Leadership Center for Excellence’s 40 Under 40 in 2015. Previously, she worked for the Arden Theatre Company in Philadelphia and Round House Theatre in Bethesda. She is a Board member for Embracing Arlington Arts, a member of Leadership Arlington, Class of 2014, and a dedicated volunteer with several youth serving organizations. She is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the College of William & Mary.

About the Theatre Staff Madaline Langston (Programs Director) has been with Encore Stage & Studio’s It’s Elementary Program for over a decade and is currently Education Programs Director.

Madaline is a graduate of the National Conservatory of Dramatic Arts Advance Theatre program in Washington DC. She began developing her improvisation and classical skills performing at the Maryland Renaissance Festival. Madaline later joined the Shakespeare Theatre Company under the Artistic Direction of Michael Kahn, followed by two National tours with the John F. Kennedy Center’s programs for children. As a member of the Screen Actors Guild, American Federation Television Radio Artists, and Actors Equity, Madaline has worked on films, industrials, regional and national commercials.

Aileen Pangan Christian (Director of Marketing and Design) is delighted to be in her 12th season with Encore. She taught dance at Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center in Newport News, VA, and was involved in marketing for BalletNova Center for Dance.

Aileen graduated from Leadership Arlington’s Young Professional Program and is an alum of Christopher Newport University. She has worked on films including Step Up 2, directed by Jon M. Chu, director of Crazy Rich Asians. Aileen and her husband welcomed their daughter in August 2020 and their son in January 2022.

Maureen Bouda (Business Manager) joined the Encore team in 2020. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Accounting and is a Certified Public Accountant with extensive public accounting experience including several nonprofit clients. After her time in public accounting, she worked in London, UK for a large American multinational company focusing on financial statement consolidation, Sarbanes-Oxley internal controls and process improvements. At Encore, Maureen works closely with our Board of Directors and Finance Committee to ensure accurate financial records and organizational forecasting. Maureen has a strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and supports the organization on finance related matters.

Kelley O’Dell (Development Director) joined Encore in late 2019 to coordinate individual, corporate, and foundation giving after prior work in nonprofit organizations and government agencies. She holds a Master of Public Administration degree with a concentration in nonprofit management from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University.

About the Theatre Staff Marguerite Williams (Registrar) joined Encore at the beginning of the 2023 Summer Camp season. An arts aficionado, she is excited to be part of nurturing the love of theatre in our communities. She loves seeing kids’ confidence grow when they take the stage and try something new! She is a graduate of Yale University and a lifetime member of the Yale Dramat.

Cleo Potter (Production Coordinator) grew up in the Alexandria and Arlington area and attended the College of Wooster, Ohio, majoring in Theatre and Dance. They specialized in stage management and lighting. Cleo is glad to be back in Arlington and involved with theatre in their hometown. Outside of theatre Cleo takes great joy in their pets; their dog Lil and kittens Phineas and Ferb. Cleo enjoys taking Lil on the trails around Arlington. Phineas and Ferb love when the feather wand comes out at home.

Josie Ziemski (Marketing and Development Coordinator) recently joined Encore after her arts management internship this past summer. She received her Bachelor of Art in spring of 2023 from Catholic University of America with a concentration in Digital Illustration as well as a minor in Storytelling and Video Production. Throughout college, she worked as a locations and production assistant for television and film shoots in Washington DC, as well as completed a variety of design based internships. Currently, alongside Encore, she works freelance doing web and graphic design, and was recently hired as to create an animated short over the next year.

Brian Hernandez (Programming Assistant) has always had a passion for self-expression and creativity. Originally from Falls Church, Brian got his Bachelor’s of Science in Studio Art/Art Education from James Madison University. As an educator, one of his mottos is to “define normal” and he carries that motto in many aspects of life. Life is constantly moving and has the potential to carry us to some extraordinary places. Brian is excited to be back at Encore Stage & Studio and is looking forward to be part of something magical!

Shannon Rodgers (Arts Apprentice) is a youth-theater-mentor and actor in the DMV area, specializing in Theater for Young Audiences. She currently works with Encore Stage & Studio as an Education Apprentice for the 2023-2024 school year. She attended George Mason University and received her B.F.A. in Theater Performance. As a kid, she performed with various Children’s Theaters in Northern Virginia, including Encore. This sparked her love of performing as well as her appreciation for theater education. As a recent graduate, Shannon is excited to continue her passion for working in the theater world, and inspiring the next generation of artists.

About the Theatre Staff Taylor Rawlings (Props, Arts Apprentice) is a lyric coloratura soprano with a Bachelor’s in Voice Performance and a Master’s in Voice Performance. Her decision to get her Bachelor’s in Voice Performance was followed by many experiences such as being involved in Belmont University’s Opera Theatre program, as well as performing in Masterclasses and her Junior and Senior Recitals. While she was getting her Bachelor’s she worked with staged work in Opera Theatre performances. She has also been involved with The National Association of Teachers of Singing competition, in which she made it into the second round. She finished up her Master’s in May 2023, and is now working as an apprentice for Encore Stage & Studio.
