This current iteration of Flip the Script was created while sitting at a traffic light. I noticed a taxi with the name “Friendly Cab” emblazoned on the side driving through the intersection. I thought to myself, I know that cab company, but from where? The search was on to discover its history, and from that moment on, Friendly Cab became the muse for this production. The vehicle moves us from point to point, literally and figuratively. It also became clear that the Green Valley residents have remarkable stories to tell, both past and present.
Directing the Flip the Script program is an amazing, ongoing journey. To hear firsthand accounts from academic and local historians is a gift. When I was a child, our family would sit with our elders to hear stories of the past so that we would never forget our history. The Flip the Script program brings history to life. Students gain empathy, drive, and determination to make a difference.
Another highlight is facilitating the collaboration of young writers, performers, and visionaries excited to learn about their neighborhood and neighbors and to share their newfound knowledge with all who will listen. Friendships were made during this process that I hope will last a lifetime. We started the process as strangers but left as a community. I look forward to touring our Flip the Script series coming to a school or venue this fall.
A special thanks to everyone that gave their time and energy to work on this project. We hope that you enjoy the show!
Sincerely,
