PowerSchool Godfrey-Lee Public Schools is excited to announce that we will use PowerSchool as our new Student Information System. PowerSchool will replace Infinite Campus, beginning with the 2018-19 school year. Parents and students will still have access to grades and student information through the PowerSchool Parent Portal. The Parent Portal will provide a streamlined source for all school information, and will allow for parents to update contact information. It is critical for the school to have the most up-to-date contact information, in case of an emergency. More information on how to access PowerSchool will be shared at the Middle and High School Orientation and Elementary Open Houses. ECC TEAM21 TEAM 21 is a collaborative after-school and Summer program, serving over 1,800 students annually in the City of Wyoming. We are a partnership between the City of Wyoming Parks and Recreation Department, Wyoming Public Schools, Godfrey-Lee Public Schools, Godwin Heights Public Schools, and Kelloggsville Public Schools. During the Summer, students work on furthering their knowledge in reading, writing, and math in the morning, along with experiencing many hands-on activities and field trips in the afternoon.

EL Summer Scholar Quest: Lee Middle and High School
School’s out for the Summer, however, for a group of motivated middle and and high school English Language learners, Summer Scholar Quest has been in session. These students have been working on their their English skills, in order to be prepare for upcoming school year. These students, from Guatemala, Honduras, and Tanzania, learned to identify and classify various animals. They then selected a favorite animal of their choice and prepared a report with text and pictures. In their report, the students described what their animal looks like, what it eats, whether it is wild or domestic, how it develops and moves, and how it communicates. Great work Summer Scholar Quest students!
EL Summer Scholar Quest: Escuela Secundaria y Preparatoria Lee
Movie Making Camp From June 11, through June 14, students took part in a four-day Movie Production Camp. The goal was to produce a ten-minute short film that can be submitted to Teen Film festivals. The students participated in everything from lighting, directing, sound, filming, writing and acting. The final product is a short film called "Court of Life" about a police officer who goes undercover at a local high school to stop crime. The short film pays homage to 70's and 80's crime shows.

GVSU Summer Literacy Program The GVSU Summer Literacy Program may be described as a month filled with rich opportunities for reading, writing, and speaking. Students explore the community: on field trips to museums, farm, zoo. They read: with friends in ‘mystery book clubs.’ They wrote: creating diagrams to describe their exploration of such engineering and science concepts or tools as magnetism and catapults, and they presented their ideas to others: sharing their artwork and explaining how their work shows the techniques of famous artists such as Georgia O'Keeffe.

What do groceries have to do with learning? I really don't like to go grocery shopping. I tend to get distracted by what's new or what I'm hungry for or what's on sale. Sometimes, I'll get home, unpack my bags, and discover that I really don't have the ingredients I need to make the meal I had hoped to eat. That's when I look at my list--and notice that I haven't purchased many of the items that I intended to buy. A list helps organize a shopping trip so that it produces a meal that is nutritious, tastes good, and isn't missing any ingredients. Without a way to organize the shopping trip, the grocery store become a large space with lots of individual parts that may not come together as hoped for.
Learning in school can be that way too. There are many parts and pieces to a school day and they don't always come together in ways that help students connect and use the information to create new knowledge. Last year, Godfrey-Lee Public Schools began the process of organizing learning into themes to help all the ingredients of learning fit together so that each learner is able to create meaning and understanding. A theme is similar to a list at the grocery store: it helps you remember what you need, organizes the ingredients into patterns, and can be used to make a way for new information to fit into what is already known.

In June, thanks to a grant from the Steelcase Foundation, seven Godfrey-Lee teachers came together to build on last year's February all-district Olympic Theme Day. Three thematic projects, impacting over a third of district students, were developed: Who Am I? for students in K-2 Passion and Purpose for students in 2nd, 5th, 8th, and 10th grades Change and Transition for students in 9th grade

Each plan takes ingredients that are common in school--information, skills, collaboration, creativity--and mixes them together in ways that will help students make connections that feed their confidence and help learning grow. Teachers Brian Cahoon, Andrea Donovan, Tom DeGennaro, Jody Snyder, Nancy Stefano, Kara Jones, and Brian White spent two and a half days creating plans to 1) tie content learning to an engaging theme, 2) prepare experiences for students, and 3) anchor the learning in fiction and non-fiction texts. Their "shopping list" included the content that is important, the skills students need, the products that students might create to demonstrate understanding, connections across disciplines, multiple texts that align to the theme, and, most importantly, the big idea s/he could get excited about teaching toward. With the help of consultants Jack Briggs, Ginger Fifer, and Alex McDonnell, they created plans and budgets that will be implemented in 2018-2019. Under the direction of the building leadership teams, and with the support of Dave Koetje, Design Coach, and Carol Lautenbach, Assistant Superintendent, these prototypes will form the basis of our district-wide focus on theme development in 2019-20. So, next time you are in the grocery store shopping with a list, think about the learning that about 500 Godfrey-Lee students will experience this year. They will be combining all the skills, knowledge, products, choices, and interests in their own shopping bags to create a satisfying feast that will grow their brilliance as they become confident learners.

Rebel Camp 2018 During the first session of Rebel Camp, our campers experienced lessons and field trips to improve their social and emotional learning. Some of the field trips included a tour of the Wyoming Police Station, the Children's Museum, walking downtown Grand Rapids, and the Wyoming Public Library. On each of our trips, the students had to show grit, perseverance and never giving up!

Alternative sports camp provides an opportunity for our students to attempt a sport that they would not have access to during the school year. This year, our group has played a round of paintball, a cricket match, went rock climbing, ice skating, and will end our week golfing.

On Monday, June 11, our Summer School Scholar Quest students went on a field trip to tour the Kent District Library in Wyoming (3350 Michael Ave.), and got public library cards. Students learned about the free reading resources in their neighborhood, and parents/guardians learned, along with their children, about the library resources available to them and their families.

Registration for busing will need to be completed annually. Registration forms for busing can be completed either at the Administration Office, or elementary school offices. Annual AHERA Notification
July 2, 2018 Godfrey-Lee Public Schools conducted an extensive asbestos survey of all buildings in 1989. Based on the findings of this inspection, a comprehensive management plan was drafted. This plan details the response actions that the district would be taking regarding asbestos containing material found in our buildings. This notification was sent to all district residents, parents, teachers, and employees, as required by law. The AHERA management plan is located in each of the buildings in the main offices, as well as in the Operations office at the ECC. This plan is available for inspection at our Administration office, without cost or restriction, during normal business hours, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. If you wish to have a personal copy, please notify the Administrative office, and it will be supplied to you within five working days, at a cost of 30 cents per page. During the past year, there were no asbestos removal projects in the District. I completed Designated Person Training on July 6, 2000, and became the designated person for the District on August 14, 2000. The six month periodic inspections were completed on December 21, 2017 and May 7, 2018. The areas of ACM at Lee and Godfrey were inspected and were determined to be non-friable. Isabell Lazcano has competed in six seasons of athletics, thus far in her time at Lee. Isabell was an All Conference Softball player and Competitive Cheerleader this school year, as well as varsity letter winner on the volleyball team. OK Conference Male Athlete of the Year
Thomas competes in Football and Track & Field. He has earned six varsity letters in his career. Over the past three seasons, Thomas has rewritten Lee's record book in Track & Field. He took home State Championships in both the 100M Dash and 200M Dash, and was on the State qualifying 4x100M Relay team for a third straight season. Thomas has improved all of his times and defended his titles this year in Division 2. Not only does Thomas work hard in competition, but in the classroom. as well - he holds a 3.3 GPA and shows a tremendous amount of respect for his teachers, coaches and classmates. Next year Thomas is off to Michigan State University, on a full ride Track & Field Scholarship.

In her Senior seasons, Daisy served as Team Captain for Volleyball and Competitive Cheer. Daisy was an All Conference Competitive Cheerleader, and one of the most dedicated volleyball players in her four years at Lee. In the classroom, Daisy boasts an impressive 4.045 GPA, earning the distinct honor as a Top 10 graduate, and is a member of the Lee High School Chapter of the National Honor Society.

Josiah was an All Conference Wrestler in his Senior year, and has plans to join the Armed Forces beyond high school.

Notice of Health Services
In compliance with law, the Godfrey-Lee Board of Education may require students to submit to periodic health examinations to: • protect the school community from the spread of communicable disease; • determine that each student's participation in health, safety, and physical education courses meets his/her individual needs; • determine that the learning potential of each child is not lessened by a remediable, physical disability. Godfrey-Lee Public Schools shall specify the need for services which may include, but not be limited to: • student physical examinations; • athlete physical examinations; • dental examinations; • tests for communicable disease; • vision screening; • audiometric screening; • scoliosis test. Any health services program should also include instruction to staff members on the observance of students for conditions that indicate physical defect or disability.

East Lee Campus 2018-19 Orientation
East Lee Campus will hold orientation on August 13 and 14, from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Returning students may come into the school to update any changes to their status, such as phone number or address changes. Schedules will not be available until the first day of school.

Students new to East Lee will need to go to the Administration building, 1324 Burton St., SW to start the enrollment process. New students will need a certified copy of their birth certificate, a copy of immunization records, two proofs of residency (driver’s license, utility bill, rent receipt), and a copy of the student’s transcript.

Emergency Messenger Sends Phone, Text or Emails to Parents within Minutes
Just ask Superintendents if snow days and other emergency situations occur too often and most, if not all, of them would quickly answer yes. During these situations, it’s challenging to get the word out to our parents and families in a timely manner. To help communicate emergency information or important reminders, Godfrey-Lee’s emergency messenger system allows parents to receive a phone call, text or email, within minutes. Families do not need to register or sign up to begin receiving emergency messages, but parents can login to the Infinite Campus Parent Portal to select different contact settings. If you do not have a login yet and wish to change your settings or contact information, please follow this simple process: 1. Visit to www.godfrey-lee.org 2. Under the Parent Tab, Select PowerSchool Parent Portal 3. Follow directions to begin the registration process.

Summer is for Learning
This Summer, Godfrey-Lee welcomed almost 500 students to varied opportunities to develop in many different ways. A wide range of experiences were available, including reading, sports, social-emotional skill development, English language learning, and even movie-making skills. Many teachers in the district spend the Summer teaching our students; the Summer months give them more opportunity to try new ideas to help students develop and grow. Most programs also provide breakfast and lunch to students, and many include field trips to areas throughout West Michigan. In Godfrey-Lee, Summer is for learning.

Enroll now for the 2018-2019 school year! Summer enrollment hours are Monday-Thursday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Administration Office, located at 1324 Burton St. There will be special hours on Wednesday, August 8, from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., to accommodate those who cannot make it to the office during normal summer business hours.
