During the 2017-18 school year, the Board of Education and Leadership Team at Godfrey-Lee Public Schools embarked on an ambitious journey: to define the vision and values for years to come. We were proud to roll out the Godfrey-Lee Strategic Design, earlier this school year, to share the product of a year's worth of work. We established five values - core to our vision and mission: COMMUNITY: Service for the common good HUMAN CENTERED: Flexible solutions fueled by empathy EQUITY: Barrier-free hearts, hands, and minds EXCELLENCE: Continuous growth of all human potential RELATIONSHIPS: Empowering human connection
In this issue of our newsletter, we will share examples related to Community and Relationships. These two values are at the heart of any school, but within our close-knit school district, they are vital to our success. GodfreyLee Public Schools exists to serve our community and we strive to make our schools a safe and welcoming place for all who enter.

RELATIONSHIPS Noted researcher, John Hattie, stated “A positive, caring, respectful environment is a prior condition to learning.” Relationships are all about trust. We do not take lightly the trust you put in us to care for your most valuable possessions, your children. Relationships are about building human connections to enhance the learning experience of all in the learning community. In order to achieve the lofty goals we have for our students, they must feel safe taking risks and getting outside of their comfort zone. A great example from this past Summer is our partnership with Ferris State University for students from Godfrey-Lee to participate in the Promesa Summer Success Program. Students earned seven college credits, while increasing their knowledge and skills in English Language, Arts, and Math. Lee High School counselor Julie Warmels recruited students to participate and, because the students know and trust Mrs. Warmels, they were willing to give the rigorous program a try. In our pilot of the program, we had 11 students complete the program! Program completion guarantees acceptance to Ferris State University, and a $1,000 scholarship. COMMUNITY “It takes a village to raise a child.” African Proverb Godfrey-Lee may be the most unique school district in the State of Michigan. We have the smallest geographic footprint (1.4 square miles), and the makeup of our student population is equally distinct. While we are a part of the City of Wyoming, we claim Godfrey-Lee as our part of the City. It’s our identity, and the school district and neighborhood are tightly woven into the fabric of our community. The value of Community at Godfrey-Lee Public Schools is all about service. The district values its role in serving the community. We expect our students to serve the community through service to others through activities such as Senior service hours and service for the greater good through activities such as the Food Truck on the first Tuesday of the month. We need the service of the community to support our schools, as well, in order to be successful. Opportunities such as volunteering at school, mentoring students through One Wyoming 1 on 1, Kids’ Hope, serving in the PTO, and coaching an extra-curricular activity are examples of ways to support our schools. Together, we are better than any one of us individually. I hope you enjoy reading about how we intentionally build Relationships with those we serve to make Godfrey-Lee a great community!

Library staff will count all the books in all three of the district libraries this Fall. We are moving toward curating the best selections for our readers! Getting to Know You
Surveys are one way for an organization to learn more about the people it serves. This Fall, Godfrey-Lee is using surveys from the National Tripod Company to survey students, teachers, and parents; the results will help us understand more about our climate and culture, student engagement, and satisfaction with our educational program. If you are a parent in the district, please take five minutes to complete the survey, found at https://tinyurl.com/GLPSParent. A computer or phone may be used. Survey results will be shared with our community, later in the year. In addition, personal visits are an important part of connecting with families. Mr. Jaime Ramirez, our Family/Community Engagement Coordinator, will be leading a team that will be inviting families to participate in home visits, a chance for school to come to you! During the home visit, the team will listen to your own perceptions and hopes for Godfrey-Lee, and your child’s school. Senior English: 12 students had the opportunity to use the design thinking process to generate ideas for ways to increase student attendance at sporting events. The students exhibited creativity, collaboration and communication skills to develop and present their ideas to their peers. This was presented as a student-led solution to a community problem, and staff are excited to see what students choose to implement over the course of the school year! Forming relationships with our community is what we strive to do here at Godfrey-Lee. Within the business office, one way we look to do this is by being as transparent as we can with our finances, so that you know your hard earned dollars are being put to great use. Passing along this key information, so our community stays connected, is of the utmost importance to us, as we want accountability measures in place to help drive our decisions. In order to visit our district transparency page, please click on the logo that looks like this. Under the district links on the right hand side of our homepage located at www.godfrey-lee.org From this link, one will be able to access many key financial documents, which include, but are not limited to, our annual operating budgets, summary of expenditures, financial audits, check registers, important financial policies, teacher and support staff contracts, and salary and benefit information. These resources can help show how we operationalize our budget, and where our district funds and priorities are allocated. One additional item that was just added to the page is our 2017-18 audit report, recently completed by our auditors: Vredeveld Haefner. Through this, one can review the district’s financial statements, while also seeing a narrative overview and analysis of the financial activities that took place for the fiscal year, which ended June 30, 2018. One great place to learn more about this is within the section entitled Management’s Discussion and Analysis, located on pages 3-11 of the audit report. Introducing New Food Choices Wow, did the first month of school go by fast! October is here, and Food Service has been busy working with the students to teach them about healthier and allergy free food options. As many of our students have food allergies, it is very important that we give them knowledge of food options that are safe for everyone. Once a month, we will be introducing a new food option, with our Discovery Kitchen. In September, the Food Service Department was able to make no bake cookies for the students, containing oatmeal, real cocoa, soy milk and sunbutter (a peanut butter alternative). The students loved it and were not even aware that it did not have peanut butter or added sugar in it. We were able to see tons of happy faces and students got to try something new.
Some upcoming events in the Godfrey-Lee Cafes: October 15-19 is National School Lunch Week. Check out our website, and café fliers, to see what our daily events will be to celebrate this. October 23 will be the annual MICHIGAN APPLE CRUNCH. I hope everyone can join us at 1:00 pm, and take a crunch out of an apple - together. October 21 we will celebrate NFL Football Day. Wear your favorite team shirt/jersey to receive a FREE cookie, and enjoy some great football food. Wow, el primer mes de clases pasó muy rápido! Ya es Octubre, el Servicio de Comida ha trabajado fuerte para enseñarle a los alumnos acerca de las opciones de comida saludable y sin alergias. Como muchos de nuestros alumnos tienen alergia a comidas, es muy importante dejarles saber las opciones de comidas seguras para todos. Una vez al mes tendremos nuevas opciones en comida, con nuestra Cocina Inventiva. En septiembre, el Departamento de Servicio y Comida hicieron galletas sin hornear para los alumnos, con avena, coco real, leche de soya y mantequilla alternativa un reemplazo de la (mantequilla de maní). Les gusto a los alumnos ni notaron que no tenía mantequilla de maní o azúcar añadida. Vimos muchas cara felices y los alumnos probaron algo nuevo.

Daybreak Book Drive:
For the past five-plus years, Godfrey Lee Public Schools has partnered with Daybreak Church, located in Georgetown Township. Two years ago, Daybreak did a school supply drive for the ECC and Godfrey Elementary. Teachers have submitted wish lists, and the Daybreak community has stepped up. With the district’s recent focus on classroom libraries, Daybreak took their supply drive in another direction and decided, this year, to do a book drive. This Fall, more than 600 books were donated by Daybreak Church members. These new and popular titles will be added to our classroom libraries, where students are already excited to get their hands on them. Principals, Pete Geerling and Andy Steketee, recently had the opportunity to attend a service at Daybreak Church, to show their gratitude and thank those that were able to donate. On top of the incredible one-on-one relationships, Penny Geers and the Kids Hope Network (a program that is run through Daybreak) volunteers provide for many of our students, Daybreak recognizes public school funding issues. Through their generosity, Daybreak has worked with us to supplement areas of need at the elementary level. Our students cannot thank them enough.

ECC Student Success Celebration
Staff and students celebrated an amazing first two months, with a school-wide celebration. With the collaboration of Lee High School Freshman, Kent District Library, Community dance group and many others, ECC students were treated to a Day of Engagement, Critical Thinking, Collaboration and Fun. Students challenged their critical thinking skills in our STEAM rooms, practiced creative innovation in the GLOW room and Art studio, then spent some time having fun and working collaboratively at Rosewood Park and in our Outdoor Learning area.

Personal y alumnos celebraron los primeros dos meses increíbles con toda la escuela. Cultural Celebration
To kickoff Hispanic Heritage Month, the ECC was treated to a fantastic assembly by our community dance group, Mexico Mix. The dance group performed numerous traditional Mexican Folk Dances for our students during this assembly. It was a wonderful opportunity for staff and students to learn about Hispanic culture, and the meaning behind many of these beautiful dances.

Para dar inicio al Mes de la Herencia Hispana, el grupo de baile comunitario, Mexico Mix, invitó al ECC a una fantástica asamblea. El grupo de danza realizó bailes tradicionales mexicanos para nuestros alumnos. Fue una maravillosa oportunidad para que el personal y los estudiantes aprendan sobre la cultura hispana y el significado detrás de muchos de estos hermosos bailes.
Community Give Back
This year, the ECC and Godfrey Elementary were recipients of the enormous generosity of our community partner, Daybreak Church. Through a Daybreak book drive, almost 600 new books were donated to the ECC and Godfrey Elementary. A goal of the ECC is to ensure that students have access to an abundant supply of books, and exposure to rich text - this donation has had a huge impact on helping us achieve our goal. In addition to the book drive, Daybreak volunteers spent two days helping clean, paint and fix different spaces around our building.

Service Project
Auditions
On Friday, September 28, Lee High School Freshmen students participated in a Service Project at the ECC, and helped K-2 students in various classrooms. Students engaged with each other through STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) activities, and conversation. Students read to our little ones and showed their ability to be positive role models. We look forward to visiting with ECC students again very soon!
Auditions are underway for Lee High School’s Fall Play. The popular play “Fools” will be produced/directed by Rosanne Steffens, and will be presented on November 29 and 30. We look forward to an amazing performance by our talented Lee students!

Students at Godfrey Elementary enjoy rewards earned as part of PBIS Los alumnos de la Primaria Godfrey disfrutan de premios obtenidos de PBIS Relationship building is essential to a positive school climate and culture. To strengthen building a positive climate throughout our district, Godfrey-Lee Public Schools is implementing Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) and focusing on Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS). PBIS is a proactive approach to establishing the behavioral supports and social culture needed for all students in a school to achieve social, emotional and academic success. District and building teams at the ECC and GEL participated in extensive training last year, to begin implementation at the beginning of the 2018-19 school year. Over the course of this year, Lee Middle School and East Lee Campus will begin training for building level implementation at the start of the 2019-20 school year. Lee High School will implement the following year. We are excited to be working toward having a district-wide system of support in place for all students, in all buildings. Para fortalecer la construcción de un clima positivo en nuestro distrito, las Escuelas Públicas de Godfrey-Lee implementan sistemas de apoyo de varios niveles (MTSS) que se enfocan en intervenciones y apoyos de comportamiento positivo (PBIS). PBIS es un enfoque proactivo para establecer los apoyos de comportamiento y la cultura social necesarios para que los alumnos en una escuela logren el éxito social, emocional y académico. Los equipos del distrito y los edificios del ECC y GEL participaron en un extenso entrenamiento el año pasado, para implementarlos a principios del año escolar 2018-19. Durante este año, la Escuela Intermedia Lee y el Campus East Lee iniciaran el entrenamiento para implementarlo en su edificio al inicio del año escolar 2019-20. Lee High School implementará el año siguiente. Estamos muy contentos de estar trabajando para tener un sistema de apoyo en todo el distrito para todos los alumnos, en todos los edificios. A Teacher’s Perspective
At the ECC, we work really hard to build relationships. As a teacher, that’s the favorite part of my job. Every classroom teacher is now doing a morning meeting and, in some, they are also sharing ‘good things’ each morning. Students get so excited to hear what their peers say, and often ask questions to find common ground between each other. Another thing I have started implementing is having students say one good thing about their day, before they leave. I love doing this, because it helps students end their day on a positive note, and it helps me identify what students like about their day, so I can build upon the positive. ~ Kelsey Koetje is a Special Education Teacher at the ECC La Perspectiva de un Maestro En el ECC, trabajamos fuerte para construir relaciones. Students from Lee Middle School with their Walk-a-Thon partners On September 26, Lee Middle School Student Ambassadors and Student Council members participated in a morning of service learning at Pine Grove Learning Center, a center-based program offering comprehensive programing to meet varying and diverse student needs. Godfrey-Lee currently has seven students who attend Pine Grove to receive services. Each Lee Middle School student was assigned to and assisted Pine Grove students, pushing them in their wheelchairs for one hour, during an annual Walk-a-Thon. It was a wonderful opportunity for all, and many of our students are already planning to participate again next year!

Mrs. Janusz’s Lee Middle School ELD newcomer students are attending three days per week to Elevate practicing extensive reading in English and Spanish. Students read self-selected books at their individual reading level. We are in search of dedicated Lee High School mentors to join us in Elevate to mentor our Lee Middle School readers. Currently, Brithany Reyes, a Lee High School Senior and Student Council President is already on board. All Lee Middle School ELD students are welcome to join our extensive reading program in Elevate on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, from 3:00 to 4:00. Los alumnos de la Sra. Januz recién llegados de ELD de la Secundaria Lee asisten tres días a la semana a Elevate practican la lectura extensa en inglés y español. Los alumnos leen libros a su nivel de lectura individual. Students in Ms. Doran’s Lee High School ELD classes read library books of their choice, for ten minutes, at the beginning of each class.
