TERM 3

Like the medieval poet Geoffrey Chaucer once said, “All good things must come to an end.” With this said, I hope your eyes are ready to feast upon 2024's last edition. We combined terms three AND four’s news, activities, juicy truths, and farewells to present our best edition yet to you guys.
This edition is a bittersweet one - as we say goodbye to our matric group of this year, we welcome our next matric group, which I’m beyond proud to be a part of.

2024 held a lot of surprises for me, both positive and negative.

“So how can you see what your life is worth Or where your value lies?
You can never see through the eyes of man You must look at your life
Look at your life through heaven's eyes.”

Glo in JOUSELF. ‘n Ander onderwyser het eens vir my gesê as jy nie in jouself glo nie, hoekom moet ander mense? Kom nou en dan uit jou gemaksone uit. “To have something you’ve never had, you must do something you’ve never done.” Last but not least, the toughest one of all. If it’s not God’s time, you can’t force it! When it is God’s time, you can’t stop it!
Enjoy your long and well-deserved holiday. I hope you rest well and come back to school with more energy than ever. 2025 is going to be Eduplex’s best year yet, I can feel it.
Love, Miché x

Going into the MasterChef competition, I was completely unprepared for the stress and joy it would bring me in the end. With this being my first MasterChef competition, I had no idea what to expect. The little I knew about it was down to stories told by my friends and other learners. I was partnered with my brother AJ for the competition, who had little knowledge concerning the ins and outs of a kitchen. But that was not a worry at all, as my main intention was to just have fun. The theme of the cook-off was “Moana”. Once I realised that my brother and I had to create a Hawiaanthemed dish, I actually started panicking. I have been in the kitchen many times, but never have I been tasked with making a themed dish I haven’t even tasted before. But, as we entered the Consumer Studies classroom, my familiarity with the space gave me a sense of calm and excitement. As my brother and I cooked up a storm, my nerves completely vanished and I had an amazing time. Even though we did not win, it was still an amazing experience which I will always cherish.

As we boarded the bus, excitement coursed through our veins. Our school's A Cappella group, EHS A Cappella, headed to the annual AKV Eistedfodd. We couldn't wait to take to the stage. The long hours of rehearsal early on Monday mornings were about to reflect in our performance! The results of our persistent efforts to try and perfect our harmonies and subtle dance moves were going to be judged and we had done everything that we possibly could to prepare for this moment. Upon arrival, we were intimidated by the seriousness of the adjudicators. But as soon as we took our place on stage, adrenaline surged through our veins, and every lyric, every harmony, every rhythm and beat ringed out with confidence and assurance. It was truly amazing to see what EHS A Cappella had become - a group of inspiring, passionate singers. The performance was filled with a whirlwind of music and emotion. As we left the stage, beaming with pride, we knew we had given it our all. This experience bonded us as musicians and friends forever.

Allow me a moment to share my experience at the Culture Week E-sports event with all of you. I remember being pretty excited about it, so I talked to Lumumba, Simiso, and Mark and we decided to sign up together to prepare for the competition. We all agreed that the venue where we would practice would be my house and we practiced the games on the Wednesday and Thursday beforehand. Unfortunately, on the day of the tournament, Mark was unable to come so we were down a member, but it ended up being okay because we managed to qualify for the semi-finals and finals in all 4 games. After an hour, we all showed up to compete during the Game Night social (which was great by the way). The first match that was played was the Rocket LeaguefinalsandSimisoandLumumbawereableto winit.Afterthat,SimisoandIwontheOvercooked2 finals and since we were the only team to win 2 finals we ended up the overall winners of the year. In the end, I had a lot of fun and I'm glad there was finallyaschooleventIcouldwin.

1…2…3… Let’s braai and roll!
by Anonymous
Walking up to the stage, hearing the crowd go silent, and finally reaching out to the all-toofamiliar keys of the piano. The tension in the air was so thick; that you could cut it with a knife. Sitting down, feeling the familiar patterns of a piece that I have been practicing for months, and forgetting about everything in the background. Knowing that no matter the outcome, you gave it your best shot. Then comes the extraordinary gift - making music. I believe that many of my fellow performers can find these descriptions relatable and while there were some slipups, it can undoubtedly be stated that everyone performed extraordinarily, showing off just how high the standard of musicality at our school is. It was beautiful seeing the undying support the rest of the school gave to each performer and how after every performance, the crowd went wild with applause. Although winners were chosen, everyone was a winner that day because everyone deserved recognition for the time and effort they put into this amazing event. Then, of course, there was the braai! The unifying activity that highlights the heart and soul of our beautiful country and the pride of our culture. I have respect for every participant who dared to face the scary, critical, and glaring eyes of our judges, fearing that their meat was raw, or worse - Anakin Skywalker’s level of burnt! But that obviously isn’t the point of the braai. The point isn’t to make a perfect steak or an exquisite kebab. There is no braai without the people, the friends that keep the morale high, and the laughs you share with them over the fire. There is no braai without the spirit of the people that come along with it!

Danique, Nicole en ek (as ‘n groep) was net so ‘n goeie wenresep soos die Kultuurweek. Ons was die definisie van “if you put your mind to it, you can achieve it.”

Our high school hosted its annual art exhibition, which was a vibrant showcase of talent and creativity from learners across all grades, ranging from grade 4 all the way to grade 12. The event took place in the Student Centre, which was transformed into a gallery with a diverse selection of artworks on display, ranging from paintings to sculptures and photography.
The exhibition opened with a lovely speech from one of our art teachers, Ms Wannenburg, who gave her gratitude and humble thanks to all of the talented and inspired learners as well as the teachers and staff who graciously helped set up the gallery.
Visitors walked through the exhibition and encountered a stunning variety of pieces. One standout was a large tree cut-out that encouraged the visitors to add their choice of colours and designs to plain white leaves, showing that they can be creative too.

[This year was just a little taste of what the Culture Committee has in store - hope you are ready for what the upcoming year will bring. Remember, “if you can’t be a legend, be yourself - it’s basically the same thing.”

The Grade 12 History excursion to Goldreef City was one filled with heritage and thrills. Learners traveled back in time to South Africa’s Golden Age of mining. Touring the 226 metre deep mines, while wearing hard hats with flashlights in hand, truly simulated the 1800’s miner’s experience. After we thoroughly explored the mines, we got to witness a real gold smelting process whereby molten gold was turned into pure gold bars. Next on the agenda was experiencing Goldreef City to its fullest, starting with the Jozi Express which led us straight to the rides that tossed, turned and twirled us around. After a long day of fun, we hopped back onto the bus, tired and dizzy, and made our way back to school. What an amazing and adventurous day.

I’m sure you have all seen those condoling, “ag shame” eyes someone gives you when you tell them you take Physics as a subject. That sympathetic stare where you just know that they want to ask you if you’re ok. The truth is that Physics is actually very fun and we, the Physics learners, actually enjoy it more than you think! Just like at our Physics excursion to the National Metrology Institute of South Africa. It all started in a huge boardroom filled with formal business chairs where the tour guide explained that NMISA is an institution that establishes and calibrates the basis for accurate measurements worldwide. Our first stop was the Physical and Electrical Metrology Lab where we learned about electricity standards and how Eskom transfers power to our homes (or how they’re supposed to…) Countries from all over the world bring their electricity instruments to NMISA to check if they comply with the global standards and trust me, they make sure they are extremely accurate by only rounding off to the 8th decimal! We then went to the Chemical Material and Medical Lab, where they showed us an extensive variety of machines that test for traces of harmful chemicals in our food. All of their standards must comply with guidelines set forward by the World Health Organisation, otherwise the food is deemed inedible. Our last stop was at the Applied Metrology Lab where we saw an atomic clock that determines the time by measuring the resonant frequency of different atoms (don’t worry, I was also confused). However, the best thing about this clock is that it sets the time for the entire world and cannot be wrong! My favourite part of the day was when we filled our stomachs with delicious delights from a restaurant called Newton’s Eatery. I think that after such an informative and enjoyable day, it is safe to say that the Physics kids can have fun too, even though we only eat in restaurants named after famous scientists!

Wow! Sleep has never been so scarce and the will to live so absent. Living a month straight on nothing but hopes, dreams, and wondering “when did we learn this???” was interesting, to say the least. Bioplus bombs became my friend, Redbull and I became an unstoppable duo, and happiness became a stranger. Have you ever worked hard just for the results you wanted to not be there?
Well, that's the Prelim experience for 99% of matriculants and I was unfortunately not an outlier this time around. I guess that's what I get for leaving a year's worth of work for the night before one of the biggest exams of my life. If I had to describe it in a few sentences it would be as follows:

[As your deputy head of Academics for 2025, all I can say is, trust me - I know academics are very hard, but school would not be the place it is without them. Suffering together through any hard subject and studying endless hours for exams are genuinely part of the high school package! So my advice is, just make the most out of it! (Even when you’re studying Math at 01:00 the night before)
I promise I will try to make academics as much fun as I can next year!

In the heart of the soccer league, our team stood as the ultimate underdogs, facing off against more established rivals with a fierce determination that belied our small stature. The keeper made breathtaking saves, the strikers scored the most amazing goals, and the midfielders and defenders were the playmakers - our passion kept us in the game against all odds. Each match was a battle, with our opponents often underestimating our tenacity. Despite the challenges, we fought hard, showcasing our teamwork and resilience. As we pushed through the season, we discovered that success was not just about victories on the scoreboard but about the unwavering fight we displayed, proving that even the smallest teams could make a significant impact in the league.

What is soccer to you? Some fun game that you just play from time to time, a way to get all your anger out, or maybe you’re just like us and soccer feels like a home? To me, soccer is Eduplex’s Girls Soccer Team. It is watching the new players learn how to kick the ball, being part of a group that plays their hearts out in every single match, and bonding with the girls, becoming something even closer than a team. It all started with our first training session, where Coach Gustavo and Coach Kamo practically killed us with fitness and drills (if you think running around and passing balls for 20 minutes is easy, you have quite a realisation waiting for you), yet despite the pain, we still managed to make jokes with each other and create an atmosphere that made you look forward to soccer every single day.

Once our matches began, we were faced with thrilling challenges. The seniors had quite a few nail-biting draws that truly showcased their endless capabilities, and we scored some amazing goals, while our juniors won many games with their top-tier skills and ended up making it to the second stage of the cup. Unfortunately, we were confronted by some losses and heartbreaking misses, but we had a team that was there to cheer us on when we fell down and fight the ref with full force whenever needed! I say that this team is soccer to me because, on top of all the peace and joy that the sport brings me, I got to experience it with a 10/10 team! I definitely couldn’t have asked for better!

The MTB season was great and filled with all sorts of fun, as we went out on our first cycling camp. During the camp, we learned so many different things and made great memories, like making a raft so that we were able to float on the dam. The cycling races were just as fun because of Mr Tommie’s enthusiastic spirit and the supporting atmosphere. The best moment of the year was probably finishing my race and then hearing that Josef had to complete 2 or 3 laps WITHOUT a saddle, and when he finished his race, he could barely stand without shaking. What a season!

Chess this term was entertaining all right… with special reference to getting chased down for not attending practice! The under-15 girls team are an interesting bunch, always talking about a bunch of random nonsense and not actually even playing! Although this is supposed to be an individual, quiet sport, we’re anything but that… even getting banned from using paint! To be honest… most of us are just in it for the free chocolates…

A succsessful team beats with one heart.”

Tell us how you think we can win the spirit cup next year.

Write the lyrics of that song on the lines below and give it to Ms Tiffany or one of our new cheerleaders.

Congratulations to our newly elected cheerleaders

OPPITRACK WAS FANTASTIC.

I have been to 3 Oppitrack festivals in my time as an Eduplex learner, and this year had to be one of the best. The music this year was amazing, with a stacked line-up consisting of Bobby van Jaarsveld, Refenste, Jesse Clegg, and Die Piesangskille. And can we just take a moment to talk about the highlight of the whole festival? The mascots!

The mascots were amazing, pulling out dance moves and helping the rest of the people who were at the festival enjoy themselves. The rugby game that was viewed on a giant screen had everyone glued to their seats. It’s amazing to know that one sport can unite so many South Africans in one place. There were areas where people could socialise with one another while enjoying great food. In the middle of the chaos, there was also a giant playground area for kids, which was the area that most of us enjoyed. I still really want to see Mr Janus on that electric bull... Overall, the whole festival was epic, and if you didn’t come this year, make sure to pull up next year to have that experience.

As the Grade 11 class of 2024, we eagerly anticipated this camp for three long years! We were craving a break from our daily routines, and when the moment arrived, it exceeded expectations! The camp was a gateway to new connections, friendships, and a deeper understanding of ourselves. We discovered that, despite our natural cliques, we could come together and forge unforgettable bonds.
The camp's diverse activities and obstacles kept us engaged, but it was the shared experiences that truly united us. There was one unforgettable moment that stood out for me, and that was the gathering around the campfire where we sang along to our favourite songs and embraced spontaneous conversations. In that instant, our differences dissolved, and we became an even closer-knit family. This camp taught me that unity isn't about sameness; it's about embracing our unique perspectives and finding common ground. We returned home with memories and laughter and are forever changed from being just schoolmates to a diverse, cherishable family.

Stepping into a leadership role as an Edu Council member for the first time has been an exciting and eye-opening experience. As a new member, I wasn't entirely sure what to expect, but I was eager to make a positive impact and contribute to the school.
The inauguration ceremony was emotionally inspiring and exciting to experience. Knowing that I was going to become a part of something super amazing for our school was a feeling I couldn't even explain.
The Edu Council camp was challenging and definitely changed my perspective on being a leader and being part of a team. The activities, team building, and conversations I had helped me build stronger connections and get to know other members better, but they were also challenging and required us to think out of the box, be honest with each other, and be brave. Aside from all the seriousness, we all had so much fun getting to know each other. All the singing, dancing, and genuine conversations I had with people that I never imagined I would talk to are something I will cherish forever.
What I enjoyed the most was seeing the real impact our work has already had on our school. Knowing that our efforts have made a difference, even in the smallest ways, is incredibly rewarding. It has also been inspiring to work with my peers who share the same passion for making a positive impact.
Overall, my first time as an Edu Council leader has already been an unforgettable journey of growth, learning, and teamwork. I am so grateful for the opportunity, and I am very excited about what lies ahead and how we can continue to make our school an even better place for everyone.

Groot FM - the day of little sleep, cold morning screaming, and the insatiable urge to jump in afire. Was it fun? Uhhhh, no comment. Were the pancakes nice? Yes, if you managed to push into the line to get one.
Watching a school sing and dance while teachers steer a mini quad bike through cones at 6 am was not on my 2024 bingo card. Watching the cheerleaders try to get a bunch of “I’m so over it” teens to sing at times when many of them would still be asleep, was truly a sight I wish I could see again.
My highlight was walking away as a trivia quiz winner after a long and difficult battle... the difficult part being remembering my name more so than answering the questions. Would I want Groot FM to happen again? Yes. Would I attend it again? Debatable...

I won’t lie, waking up at 5 am was not pleasant, but after a successful day of vandalism, I can definitely say IT WAS WORTH IT. I will never forget the despairing looks on teachers' faces as they walked into their classrooms only to be hit by the smell of stink bombs and caught out by a floor full of Orbeez. But that was not even the best part. We put the entire Accounting class outside, turned over tables and chairs, rode a bike around the school, signed “Class 2024” with shaving cream on bathroom mirrors, decorated the school with funny memes and gorgeous pictures of ourselves and our teachers, and finally, to conclude a day of hard work, we had a lekker braai. The destruction was thrilling, but amidst all of it some positivity was spread. The bathroom mirror in the girls' main bathroom was beautifully decorated with encouraging messages by Temi to remind girls that they are enough. This day will forever go down in history as the best 40 days celebration in my books.

My mom used to say that learners are like soldiers. Our battlefield is the school grounds and each day we must fight to survive. For my fellow matrics and I, I am glad to announce that after plus minus 16 years of fighting, we have survived! And not only did we survive, but we conquered as well, taking home with us beautiful prizes that include lots of memories, personal growth and development, and wonderful friendships. Ringing that bell was my final salute to you all. While it hurts to say goodbye, every season has to come to an end. But the end of one season is the beginning of another. It was my absolute honour being your head girl and I will miss you all so much. It’s now your turn to fight till the end. Fight hard and make sure you win because it will definitely be worth the prize.

Welcome back to another amazing edition of the Entertainment Section! This last part of the year truly showed us that you should expect the unexpected and learn how to go along with drastic plot twists. Lucky for you all, we are always here to report right back to you and bring you the tea, fresh off the stove!
Flowers are blooming and temperatures are rising... It seems as if this hot sun has melted away the winter lull at school and brought out everyone’s true colours. How has this affected our lovely students? You have yet to find out…
Firstly, we have an unfortunate pair whose love must have been thrown out when spring cleaning came around, as they were faced with quite a messy breakup. Brown-haired Girl and Curly-haired Boy seemed like the perfect pair; two pees in a pod who were truly in love! What we didn’t know was that maybe they were “too perfect” for each other, since rumours were running around that both of them were too obsessed. Personally, we think everyone would love a partner who could not live without them, but maybe there’s more to the story than we know.
Next, we have a popular couple reappearing on our radar, Glasses Girl and Soccer Boy, who seemed to have worked out their issues from last time and gotten back together. None of us are sure whether they were ever officially done, but maybe they just took “Kisses to my exes” a little too literally. Well done to them, however, for putting their differences aside and making it work!
For the rest of you, don’t let that feed your delusions! You know what people say, getting back with your ex is just like reheating McDonald’s fries, and we’re sure you all know how that tastes… Lastly, it seems that this heat has scorched some friendships beyond repair because apparently, every grade was faced with a serious friendship breakup. Whether it was due to spreading rumours, talking behind each other’s backs or even some snarky comments, people have been having fallouts left, right and centre. All we can say is make sure you surround yourself with the best people, because who needs enemies when you have “friends” like that?
Sadly, that’s all from us for this year. We wish you more than the best for the remainder of it! Luckily for you, the tea never stops and neither do we. With the summer holidays just around the corner, we’ll be sitting back and eagerly watching everything unfold! Just remember, December may be good for the plot but reality is always waiting for you in January.
XOXO

Annabell - for those who didn’t know, Annabell made HISTORY... She was the first grade 10 ever to be part of the Moneo Memoriis team. She is the most organised person I know, and it’s so easy to work with her. I appreciate you.
Thekgo - one thing I know for certain about you is that if someone smiles at you, you always smile back even wider. Thank you for contributing to our team’s success.
Neda - I never heard anything from you or Thekgo, but your work was always handed in on time - all I had to do was look in your folder. Thank you for your creativity and for adding something new to each edition, I lovedddd it and I’m sure the readers did too.
Puse - thank you for always being ready to jump in and help out - you are the ultimate team player! Motheo - I lovedddddd working with you this year. You have so much drive and you were always ready to take on challenges and take a picture or two at any event.
Sahirah - always greeting me so friendly, thank you for putting in an effort to take pictures and always making sure we had something to publish.
Hannah - you always made a plan to take pictures even after we started with the no cellphone policy at school. Thank you for being so ambitious and committed.
Shenice & Megan - working with the two of you was a highlight of my year as Chief. Seeing your ideas come to life and a message now and then asking me something really made my heart happy. The two of you are very talented and creative and it has been an honour working with you.
The Moneo Memoriis team of 2024 was very special. Everyone worked hard and I truly believe it has paid off. IT HAS BEEN A PRIVILEGE WORKING WITH YOU GUYS AND GETTING TO KNOW ALL OF YOU.
Thank you to every single person who takes the time to read every edition - it means the world to us.
Lots of love
The Moneo Memoriis team of 2024
