THE TERM “CIRCUS” SEEMS LIKE THE PERFECT WORD TO DESCRIBE TERM ONE LIKE TRAPEZE ARTISTS, WE ALL HAD OUR UPS AND DOWNS, WE HAD TO JUGGLE OUR EMOTIONS LIKE CLOWNS JUGGLE ORANGES. SOMETIMES WE WERE TRULY ON THE EDGE, LIKE TIGHTROPE WALKERS TRYING TO MAINTAIN OUR BALANCE OTHER TIMES WE WERE LAUGHING UNTIL OUR STOMACHS HURT AND HAVING A BLAST, LIKE THE AUDIENCE OF A CIRCUS ALWAYS DOES IT’S BEEN A PRIVILEGE TO COMPILE TERM ONE’S EDITION AND TO LOOK BACK ON MEMORIES I WILL CHERISH FOREVER. TERM ONE WAS AN EVENTFUL ONE, WE HAD ORATORS, ATHLETICS, THE SWIM GALA, OPEN DAY, PAPA G’S BIRTHDAY, A GREASE-FILLED LAST DAY OF SCHOOL AND SO MUCH MORE. 2024 HAD A GREAT START, MY WISH FOR EVERYONE IS AN EVEN BETTER TERM TWO, FILLED WITH MORE HIGHS THAN LOWS, MORE SMILES THAN TEARS, AND MORE DOING AND LESS PROCRASTINATING.

I find that the best part of these public speaking competitions isn’t the part where I get up on stage and deliver my speech. Don’t get me wrong - I love speaking - but personally, the reason I enjoy these competitions is because I get to witness other fresh, young minds tackle some of the most complex topics.

This is one of the reasons why the internal orators evening was a huge success this year. Listening to some of the speakers’ topics and how they were presented with such conviction brought forth a sense within me that had been gone for a very long time - hope. That day I realised that you don’t need to be famous or rich to change the world.

All you need is to have a voice and we’ve all got one. When it was my turn, I stood up from my chair and walked over to the platform. As I stood in front of the crowd, I reminded myself of why I decided to take part in this competition. I did it for the reward, but not the kind you’re thinking of.

I didn’t do it to win a trophy; I did it to send away a crowd of people that, hopefully, after hearing my speech, would make the world a better place. That’s why I love speaking and thus I encourage everyone to use their voice and to “be the change you want to see in the world” ~ Mahatma Gandhi.

Voorsitter, dames en here, Hoërskool Eduplex se redenaarsaand van 2024 kan vir seker gesien word as dié beste redenaarsaand in Eduplex se geskiedenis. Van Duan Visagie wat vir die gehoor vertel het hoe belangrik oriëntering is tot ons hoofmeisie, Prisca Mwine, wat ons oortuig het dat inklusiwiteit en diversiteit die beste sopresep maak - ons het dit alles gehoor

Indien julle dit gemis het, hier is ‘ n paar hoogtepunte van die twee aande. Anro Herbst het in sy engelse toespraak vir die gehoor vertel dat hy nie ‘ n aanhanger daarvan is om bloed te skenk een muskiet op ‘ n slag nie. Jaron Bornman het almal se hartsnare geroer met sy toespraak waarin hy vir ons vertel het dat die regte visie ons die regte rigting sal wys Rendani Ravele het vir ons vertel dat ons woorde onomkeerbare letsels kan los op ander, so hou maar daardie wag voor jou mond.

Ons onderhoofmeisie van kultuur, Liza Kruger, het haar talent met woorde, soos gewoonlik, uiters goed ten toon gestel en die onreg teenoor vroue onder die gehoor se aandag gebring Kyan Coulson het ‘ n tongknoper van ‘ n onderwerp gehad - “It’s not fair to go to the fun fair, without any fare” - en Tshegofatso Ntsoane het ons almal in kennis gestel dat ons teen die tyd die snoepie se kos ís, want jy is mos wat jy eet, of hoe, Tshego? Anlea Bestbier het klem gelê op wat ware vriende regtig is, en ons eie “sê altyd sy sê”hoofseun, N-Cee Fryer, het ons almal herinner dat ons die reg tot vryheid van spraak het

Dames en here, as julle nog nie daarvan oortuig is dat die redenaarsaand van 2024 ‘ n aand vir die boeke was nie, was julle sekerlik nie daar nie. From the 5th to the 7th of March, music enthusiasts were treated to a spectacular showcase of talent at the Eduplex Music Academy’s Concert Series. Held within the cozy confines of the student centre, the event was a testament to the dedication and skill of Eduplex’s learners and faculty. Each day of the concert series offered a unique blend of musical genres, captivating audiences with diverse rhythms and melodies. From classical compositions to contemporary hits, there was something for every musical palate.

The performances were nothing short of mesmerizing. The students, ranging from beginners to advanced musicians, took to the stage with confidence and poise, demonstrating their mastery of their respective instruments Whether it was the graceful melodies of the violin or the energetic beats of the drums, every note resonated with passion and precision.

As the final chords echoed through the auditorium on the last day of the concert series, it was clear that the Eduplex Music Academy had once again delivered a memorable musical experience. The concert series not only showcased the talent of the learners but also celebrated the power of music to inspire, uplift, and unite. It was a harmonious delight for all who attended, leaving a lasting impression on hearts and minds alike.

The first band workshop that was held this year can definitely be recorded as one of the most successful ones yet! It was filled with lots of laughter, concentration and crotchets and quavers flying all over the place

We spent 4 hours rehearsing 6 songs, which was a great start to the session, and out of those 6 songs, 2 were brand new, challenging our sight-reading skills in the best way possible Despite the onslaught of the heat, I can say with certainty that it was truly a productive day. We can’t wait for everyone to witness all of our hard work!

On the 9th of February our band, “7th State”, was invited to perform at a charity event hosted by Tim Tebow and his wife DemiLeigh Moore (yes - former Miss SA). We performed at New Hope, a school for kids with health conditions or impairments, so performing here was quite a big deal.

The band worked really hard to be able to deliver the best performance possible for our audience and our hard work really paid off. The energy there was so pure and amazing, that it almost brought me to tears afterward, because this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and I was so grateful to be part of such a beautiful night. A special shoutout to the band and especially to Ms Cornelia for making it all happen. All the students looked wonderful and the night was truly a night to remember.

Musiek was nog altyd my passie, so om ‘ n aandeel te hê in die klankspan, ons skool se eie radiostasie (EHFM) en die band se hardewerk is n ervaring wat ek vir niks in die wêreld sal verruil nie.

Die klankspan werk sonder ophou om die band se klank altyd foutloos te maak. Die band werk net so hard en het ‘ n rekord van vier nuwe liedjies, naamlik This is Me, Dance the Night Away, I’ll Be There For You en Shake it Off in een kwartaal geleer, om almal wat bereid is om te luister se ore met manjefieke harmonieë te vermaak. Die EHFM-span maak op Vrydae almal opgewonde vir die naweek wat voorlê, met liedjies wat n baie lekker atmosfeer tydens eerste pouse skep.

Die eerste kwartaal was definitief een vir die boeke, en ek is in ekstase as ek dink aan die geleenthede wat tweede kwartaal dalk mag bied.

Laurel Evening 2024 was a night where equations were elegant, theories were trendy, experiments were triumphant and results were beyond promising. The students who were invited to this prestigious event are those who burned the midnight oil (or loadshedding lights), sacrificing sleep for study sessions, and trading after-school tuck shop chats for that last bit of math homework. The student centre buzzed with our top academic achievers, perspiring from either the scorching heat or the eager anticipation ofdiscoveringwho ourDuxlearners were.

Behalwe vir die individuele prestasies, het die Lourieraand gedien as 'n aangrypende herinnering van die onwrikbare ondersteuning wat deur onderwysers, mentors en ouers verskaf is. Hulle leiding en geloof in die potensiaal van elke leerder was instrumenteel in die kweek van 'n kultuur van akademiese uitnemendheid en die bevordering van 'n liefde vir leer. Hierdie gesogte geleentheid, gehou om die merkwaardige prestasies van leerders oor verskeie akademiese dissiplines te erken en te vereer, het gedien as 'n bewys van die toewyding, deursettingsvermoë en uitnemendheid by Eduplex.

Baie geluk aan elke slimkoppie - dit sit nie in elke Jan Alleman se broek om dit te bemagtig wat Eduplex se leerders doen nie.

MATRIC RESULTS OF 2023

On the 18th of January our Matrics of last year received their final reports and it was truly inspirational hearing their achievements. They walked away with 114 distinctions as well as a group average of 72%.

The cheering and spirit after the results were announced was phenomenal and it felt nice to cheer as a school in celebration of our previous matrics. Props to our cheerleaders, who did an awesome job. After hearing these results I had newfound motivation to do better and achieve more than I thought possible. I’m sure I speak for everyone when I say that the matrics of 2024 have big shoes to fill when it comes to academics, but I’m positive that we can do it.

Tuesday the 12th of March 2024 will forever be remembered as the evening when the senior music students of Eduplex High School showcased their extraordinary abilities. The room was bursting with various talents and the ambience of the hall complemented the Bridgerton theme perfectly.

Performers and guests were dressed to the nines, adding to the glamour of the event. The evening kicked off with the a cappella group singing to the delight of the audience. Performers were full of jitters, anxiously waiting for their turn to go up and deliver their pieces to the best of their abilities. I can say with certainty that each one of them exceeded

Pi-dag, die dag wat ons almal se gunsteling vak vier... Wiskunde! Die dag was uiters opwindend aangesien ons baie gehad het om na uit te sien, soos geheuespeletjies, “bier”-pong (met die kleinste koppies wat ek dink die skool kon kry) en ‘n vinnige wiskunde legkaart, om net ‘n paar van die speletjies te noem.

The presenters were our deputy heads of Culture and Social, Liza Kruger and Kultwano Manake, who introduced each musician with professionalism and flair. Throughout the whole night, we got to experience the passion and love the senior students put into their music It was truly a magical and memorable occasion enjoyed by both the audience and performers The bar has been set very high!

Ek dink die dag was ‘n sukses en was baie gewild onder al die leerders, omdat baie van ons verkies het om kaarte te raai eerder as om in die bedompige wiskundeklas antwoorde van somme wat ons skaars verstaan te raai.

Monkey see, Monkey do...

The eager Grade 10 Life Science class was introduced to a variety of unique animals when we went on our trip to Mystic Monkeys and Feathers Wildlife Park. Our friendly guide, Charles, told us many interesting facts about all the different creatures there, ranging from monkeys to kangaroos and even penguins.

We were introduced to our “ancestors”, the apes, who put on a brilliant show for us. They rolled around, clapped for us and one of them even slid down a slide! Later on, many of us got to pet the gorgeous lion cubs and some students ended up ‘impersonating’ David Attenborough to make an Oscar-worthy video holding the baby wild cats. With the heat getting to everyone, the animals decided to take refuge in the shade or cool off in the water. All in all, it was an amazing experience, loads of fun and an incredible learning opportunity!

Geleë te midde van die golwende heuwels en skilderagtige platteland van Harties, beloof 'n besoek aan die Van Gaalen kaasplaas 'n onvergeetlike ervaring vir kos-entoesiaste en natuurliefhebbers.

Elke oomblik wat hiér spandeer word dompel besoekers in die kunssinnigheid en toewyding agter die skepping van hierdie plaas se Gouda kaas.

Soos besoekers aankom, word hulle gegroet deur die sagte gebrom van bedrywigheid en die aardse geur van die plaas. Die reis begin met 'n begeleide toer, gelei deur kundige personeel wat gretig is om die geheime van kaasmaak te deel.

Een van die hoogtepunte van die toer is om die kaasmaakproses waar te neem. Besoekers sien die een man wat al vir 13 jaar lank, op sy eie, melk in smullekker kaas omskep, van stulping en gietvorm tot veroudering in noukeurig beheerde omgewings.

Die plaas se verbintenis tot tradisionele metodes en kwaliteit bestanddele skyn in elke wiel en wig deur.

Nadat hulle ons van die indrukwekkende proses geleer het, het ons 'n proesessie geniet en gesmul aan 'n verskeidenheid Gouda kase.

Buiten die kulinêre genot, bied 'n besoek aan 'n kaasplaas 'n dieper verbintenis met die land en sy mense. Ons het na die tyd die geleentheid gehad om by die restaurant op die plaas iets te eet en te drink en saam met mekaar te kuier.

Soos die dag tot 'n einde gekom het, het ons vertrek met harte en magies vol, met 'n nuutgevonde waardering vir die kuns van kaasmaak en die skoonheid van die plattelandse lewe.

This year's Inter-house athletics will definitelygodownasoneofthebest inEduplex’shistory.

The roaring of the crowds, the banging of the drums, and the anticipation of who would cross the finish line first or throw the farthest created an enjoyable atmosphere on Thursday afternoon. Our highlights included witnessing jaw-dropping record breaks, including Rafael da Silva jumping an astonishing 1.65 meters in high jump. Wow! Karin Hohls broke another record in the field events by throwing her discus further than 24 meters. Absolutely impressive!

Toendthedayoffrightwesaw Petertakingtheirsecondwinof the year, with David securing the Spirit trophy, making this a very unlucky year for Joshua (womp, womp). Better luck next year! ThisisourlastInter-house and we honestly feel like Eduplex reserved its best for last.

Elkeatleethetgeweetdat hulle net hul beste moes gee daardie dag en dit is presies wat die atlete gedoen het. Met so baie medaljes in elke item - of dit nou gewigstoot, diskus, hoogspring, verspring, 100m, 200m, 400m, of 4x100m aflos is - het ons, die groen en blou golf, presteer. Die kommentatorkonnieophoupraatoor hoe uitstekend Eduplex besig was om te presteer nie. Eduplex was nie een keerindielaastepleknie. Diespanning washoogterwyldieatleteopdiebaan gestap het om die finale uitslae te hoor. Toe die kommentator sê: “En in die 4deplek… HoërskoolEduplex!“, het Eduplexuithullesitplekkegespringen die uitstekende uitslae gevier. Thegreatestfootballerofalltime, Lionel Messi, once said: ”You can overcome anything, if, and only if, you love something enough. ” As the soccer preseason kicked off and the training started, manyoftheEduplexgentsput their hands up and said that they wanted to represent Eduplex’s soccer team with pride. The gents knew that this year was going to be a difficult seasonandthattheywouldhavetobe prepared like never before. They put their hearts and souls into every training session, wanting to make sure thattheymakeasuccessoftheseason, theirloveforthegameevidentforallto see. They were not only playing for themselves or for their school, they were playing for the brothers on the field. Eduplex has never won a soccer trophy, but that was about to change. The gents have decided to embark on thejourneytovictory, toovercomethis obstacle and to win Eduplex their first soccertrophy, hopingtomake history!

“Is graad agt lekker? Is dit aaklig? Sou jy ontgroening oor wou hê? Hoe was die graad 8 konsert?”

Sulke vrae gaan jou definitief tref as jy reeds 'n ontgroende graad agt is, maar wat is jou antwoord? Vir baie was dit die slegste tyd van hulle skoolloopbaan en vir ander was dit die beste. Vir my was dit ongelooflik lekker. Ek het dit baie geniet as een van die prefekte my vriendinne beveel het om op die gras te swem of om vir hulle 'n ‘vroulike blaar’ te gaan opspoor, en dit was lekker om hulle te hoor lag toe ek dieselfde moes doen! Ons uitrustings, van maanhare tot bordjies om ons nekke, was nie altyd baie gemaklik nie, maar dit was alles die moeite werd toe ek uiteindelik na die groentjiekonsert my blazer ontvang het

GOTOAN EDUPLEXSOCIAL

My gunsteling deel van graad agt sovêr was die groentjiekonsert. Ek onthou hoe ons vir ure na skool geoefen, gedans en kostuums aangepas het. Hoe ons elke dag na oefening doodmoeg was, en hoe dit alles uiteindelik bymekaar gekom het. Amy in haar prefekklere, Bianca in klere wat haar karakter op ‘ n druppel beskryf het en die Waka Waka dansers met hulle lappe. Dit was beslis 'n onvergeetlike konsert en ek dink baie ouers het die ouditorium met trots verlaat! Ontgroening is nie vir almal ewe lekker nie en graad agt is nie vir sissies nie, maar as jy daardeur stap met selfvertroue, 'n bereidwillige hart vol liefde en ’ n tjommie (of twee) om jou te bemoedig terwyl jy vir twintig minute lank die klip muur moet stoot, dan sal dit sommer vinnig verbygaan. Jy sal eendag terug kyk en verlang na jou lekker graad agt dae en vermoeiende ontgroening. So my raad vir my mede graad aggies is: geniet dit terwyl jy kan!

The Grade 8 camp was a memorable experience filled with laughter, new connections, and personal growth. Our bond with the grade 8s formed quickly, uniting us despite us screaming at them 90% of the time (LOL). Despite the challenges (the grade 8s’ constant crying) we laughed, connected and learned valuable lessons in leadership and teamwork.

Overall, the camp was lifechanging, marked by unforgettable memories and lasting friendships. Those kids really are my younger siblings - I love them! And the prefect group are really my guys.

Vrydag, die eerste Maart, kom ek skool toe vir die 2024 Eduraad-kamp. Maar iets voel nie reg nie. O ja, ek het nie my kleresak by my nie. Hierdie jaar het die Eduraad besluit om die kamp by die skool te hou. Jy dink seker, "Arme Eduraad, nog 'n dag by die skool en selfs oor die naweek", maar ek belowe... dit was soveel lekkerder as wat dit klink! Agtuur vertrek ons Menlyn-winkelsentrum toe om “Tenpin Bowling” te speel. Dit was so opwindend en regtig goed vir spanbou, en natuurlik is geen uitstappie

na Menlyn voltooi sonder 'n besoek aan die Lego-winkel nie Daarna het ons “Paintball” gaan speel. Dit is waar die ware pret begin het. Aan die einde van die dag kon ons darem na ons eie huise toe gegaan het met al ons skrape en bloukolle. Die volgende dag - ja, Saterdagwas ons terug skool toe om beplanning te doen, maar dis al wat jy hoef te weet daarvan, want wie wil nou regtig oor beplanning lees? Ten spyte van die teleurstelling dat ons nie weggegaan het nie (ons ma's was bly), glo ek dat die twee dae 'n groot sukses was.

VALENTINE’S BALL WITHOUT A VALENTINE

I sprinted through the rain trying not to get my dress wet (not that it mattered, considering I messed onto my dress 4 separate times throughout the night). The Valentine's ball - if you were not there you missed out big time.

I did not have a Valentine (surprise, surprise) but I had butterflies in my stomach because I didn't know what to expect or whether or not I was going to enjoy myself So to summarise the night, my friends and I thought we were mature and intelligent teenagers yet we spent a good 20 minutes playing with the balloons and hitting each other with them. Everyone looked stunning and so did the student centre (thank you Ms Theresa) We took funny and cute photos together, side-eyeing happylooking couples, Liam danced in heels (too well for it to be his first time) and Rori showed us how it was done on the dance floor. Though there were many fights and way too much drama, the biggest fight of the night was my battle to not spill my milkshake yet again.

What else can I say about the ball? The night was eventful and memorable. Love was in the air and amazing memories were made I hope everyone, single or not, enjoyed their Valentine’s Day and I hope to see you all at the next Valentine’s Ball.

EDUPLEX MOVIE NIGHT

Though I did not actually watch any of the movies playing, it was a complete blast! The atmosphere was amazing, with everyone gathered together, some in their pajamas, others with their blankets and pillows, enjoying snacks and having a great time. I loved the excitement and energy in the air My friends and I were in our matching tops struggling to record TikToks over the loud sound of the movie, while still feeling the eyes of “spectators” watching us. The movie night was a night filled with laughter, snacks and excitement and it was a night to remember.

Early B, Milano Piek, wat met sy talente toor en rap oor Eduplex. Ons was by Laerskool Totiusdal, Pierneef, Tygerpoort, Queenswood en St Paulus

Ek het nie gedink daar kan enige iets lekkerder wees as die ervaring nie, maar die 15de Maart het my sonder twyfel verkeerd bewys Van koekies tot pizzaniemand het honger gelei nie. Van die a cappella groep tot die band - almal se ore was vermaak. Van die kunsklas tot die wiskundeklas - daar is beslis ‘ n plek vir almal!

Van meneer Barry wat die ouers en toekomstige Eduplex-leerders met opearms verwelkom het tot ons eie Pappa G wat aan die ouers se hartsnare getrek het, is ek oortuig daarvan dat Eduplex met ons opedag ‘ n verskil in mense se lewens gemaak het. Die vrolike en warm atmosfeer van tuiste by die opedag was vir my aansteeklik en ek was meer trots as ooit om Eduplex my skool te noem. Ons het aan die besoekers bewys dat ons ‘ n klein skool is met ‘ n reuse hart.

Niemand het ongesiens of sonder ‘ n vriendelike Eduplex-verwelkoming huis toe gegaan nie Eduplex is sonder twyfel besig om elke dag nuwe hoogtes te bereik.

Welcome back, lovely readers, to this year ’ s first edition of Rumour Has It. Let’s just say this tea has been brewing for months on end and as always we ’ re here, eager to bring it to you hot and fresh off the stove We all know how the first few months of the year go“ new year, new us ” , Valentine's Day, leaving that toxic boy in 2023, but how did the first few months of the year affect our lovely students?

First off, we have Ginger and Brown-haired Boy whose motto is “ new year, no more us ” . Sadly, this wonderful relationship came to an end earlier this year and no one knows why Was it just not meant to be, or were there problems lurking behind those lovey-dovey curtains?

On the topic of relationships just not working out, we have our favourite Runner Boy who seems to have quite the selection of girls chasing after him. Public Speaker, Athletics Chick, and Brown Eyes all fell victim to his charisma Just remember girls, he may be a good athlete but the only thing that’ll be running in the end is tears down your face when you realise the truth.

Our grade 8s also didn’t shy away from providing us with drama. It Girl and the King of Proposals had a very short-lived romance. King of Proposals had his hopes and delusions crushed when It Girl decided he just wasn’t the one for her on Valentine’s Day Talk about a one-sided romance, but don’t worry, we ’ ve all been there before!

Apart from all these love flops, we still have some people to look to for hope – Academic Ambassador and Art Boy. Their relationship started over the December holidays and has bloomed into a movie-like love story Just to let you know, we are all expecting an invitation to the wedding

That’s all for this term’s drama, but who knows what we have in store for next time? Maybe all these crazy New Year emotions will die down and we can return to normal, or maybe not. We all know winter is around the corner and it’s always much cozier when you have something like a hot pot of tea to warm you up
