Welcome to our magazine-inspired first edition of Moneo Memoriis 2025. This was an incredibly busy term, but despite the burnout, mental breakdowns and academic humbling, there were countless successes as well. From our new grade eights to our D-bond Interhigh victory, there’s a lot to be said and even more celebration to be had. So thank you to everyone who helped make this edition possible and who contributed in any wayyou have our sincerest gratitude. When I first found out I was the Editor in Chief, I knew the task at hand would seem insurmountable, but my team and my fellow learners helped me produce an issue we ’ re all incredibly proud of. Despite a couple of hiccups along the way, and more rewrites than I can count, we ’ ve finally reached the finish line, excited to tackle Term 2 and give the spotlight over to our aspiring writers and photographers. One thing I wish I knew before diving into this project is the sheer dedication and commitment it takes to run a team and compile everything together When all is said and done, you need patience, resilience, a good understanding of Google Drive (note to self), and, of course, you need trust in your team to deliver, which they very much did!

So sit back, relax, and try not to skip straight to the gossip section, as we present our first edition of Moneo Memoriis 2025 to a horde of cynical teenagers and overworked teachers, with the hope you can enjoy it to some degree.

DivingheadfirstintoTerm1!

Starting the term with a splash of swimming and school spirit is arguably the best way to do it. On January 17, learners gathered in their tropical Hawaiian attire, with hula skirts, flower chains and enough face paint to decorate a small army, ready to compete. Despite a minor transport delay during which the buses left some poor stragglers behind, everything ran smoothly and efficiently Learners packed onto the stands and all of us Davids united in celebration at having gotten the shaded area to escape the sweltering heat. Unfortunately, that was the green team’s only highlight because we were valiantly defeated by Peter, with a substantial (and slightly embarrassing) point difference But in all honesty, they earned it They swam amazingly and their spirit was unmatched And of course, we continued our special traditions of the Matric swim and Teachers vs Learners race with great success. The Grade 12s gathered by the poolside for the big jump and had a great time thereafter, chilling, playing volleyball (or is it called water polo?) and bobbing around on inflatable floaties, cherishing whatever fun they were afforded before the term kicked off and the book chowing began. Ultimately, the Inter House Swimming Gala was an overwhelming success, and not the last time Eduplex learners would go for a dip, because Inter High Athletics rolled around and the weather had us missing the sunburn we got that day The aquatic trend only grew when we went on to unofficially win the Inter High Swimming - everything was a watery win in the end

Jumping into 2025

Winning at the Inter House Athletics was not just about crossing the finish line first it was about breaking through my own limits Every race was a chance to beat my previous time, to push harder, and to test my endurance, both physically and mentally. There was a unique satisfaction in setting a personal record, knowing that the biggest competition was the person you were yesterday It's in those moments, when fatigue sets in and the finish line feels far, that true strength is revealed Winning becomes more than a medal - it becomes a personal victory, a testament of growth, grit, and self-discipline. One powerful Bible verse I was constantly reminded of and believed in was Isaiah 40:31 - "But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not faint " This verse reminded me that running isn't just a physical act, but a spiritual one too When the race felt long and my energy started to fade, trusting in God gave me the strength to keep going. It was a reminder that with faith, endurance grows, and even when I felt weak, I was never running alone.

Wewillbeat youanyway!

PMr. Janus said, "We're going to Pilditch, come rain or shine," and the rain definitely did not come to play As a cheerleader, I thought to myself, "Why am I even here?", but quickly realised that the whole event was bigger than me - it was a team effort and for us to win the title of D-bond winners, we had to work together. So we did in fact stand in the rain and sing at the top of our lungs, and we also got so wet that our costumes started becoming heavy, but we weren't doing it for us, we were doing it for the school It’s like Mr Grobler always asks, "What can you do for the school?". We showed up and showed off and I am truly proud of the school and the outcome we got out of the whole event.

"Eduplex D-bond Inter High winners of 2025 - who would have thought? Athletics have been a significant part of my life since primary school, and winning D-bond Interhigh this year was just the perfect way to close a chapter This win was, of course, only something we managed to achieve through teamwork and dedication. Having an early start to the season, with practices starting up at the end of last year already and continuing through our super busy first term, definitely played a role. It was endless hours of work and perseverance that saw us through. Before long, it was the night before Interhigh. We had our athletes’ dinner where Josef and I were announced captains of the Interhigh team - an absolute honour - and we had a motivational speaker talk to us and build us up for the big win. Finally, it was the big day, the day we'd been working towards, Interhigh. It was a very rainy, dark morning when we arrived at school at 6 When we arrived at Pilditch, the nerves got real, but just like all our other athletes, I didn't let the weather stop me from trying my best. Interhigh 2025 was definitely a day that I will never forget

CULTURE/KULTUUR DEDICATEDTOTHECRAFT

A Cappella sets the ground for pure hard work, discipline and dedication! When February arrived, a detailed calendar of Term 1 was sent out to us Besides all the schoolwork and term tests, Open Day, Derby Day, and even performing for Miss SA put extra pressure on us to perfect our songs

Having these events squeezed into February and March meant extra hard work as we strived for perfection, so an A Cappella workshop seemed like the best solution Jam-packed into the weekend of the 7th of February, the A Cappella singers came to school on Saturday the 8th at 09:00 to rehearse our songs till 15:00. Yes, 6 hours is a lot, and proper endurance was needed to make it through so much singing, but we were in good hands.

We had the pleasure of nice and warm coffee and tea, and cake, and wore our comfiest clothes! Nonetheless, we put in the work that day and on the 9th, and it paid off! The workshop allowed us to understand the way in which our voices can and cannot work together and made time for good 'bonding'.

By the end of the weekend, we had made significant progress. The workshop gave us the space to explore the intricacies of our voices, learn how to work together in harmony, and develop a deeper understanding of our craft. It was an invaluable experience that would undoubtedly elevate our performances in the coming weeks. With our upcoming performances fast approaching, we definitely felt confident and prepared. The A Cappella workshop was just what we needed to take our music to the next level, and we were excited to share our talents with all the visitors that were to come in term 1 After that workshop, we definitely had that “bring on the spotlight!'' mentality

Band camp baddies - Joy Chiang

This year ' s Band Camp was a unique experience, to say the least With the added presence of the police, it was certainly different from previous years However, despite the unexpected twist, we managed to make the most of it. We kicked off the camp with a practice session on Friday, where we learned two new songs that we were able to perform confidently by Sunday afternoon The sound production team were also by our side 24/7 helping us with our sound system! Being a part of this kind of experience made me feel as if I am a part of a very famous orchestra, ready to tour the world!

Eventually we split into something Ms Cornelia likes to call "sectionals" - drums, strings, guitars, woodwinds and vocals all had allocated rooms to practice certain parts of their challenging songs together, without supervision or interruption from her. Sounds intense? Yes! Extremely intense, and it required a lot of hard work and dedication, but it was worth it!

Our performance on Sunday was one of best performances since any "band camp concert" to date We even inspired Mr Gobler to schedule a band performance for the rest of the school So yes, we are good, and yes, the practice certainly did pay off Watch this space!

Regardless of the "work, work, work" vibe band camp kicked off with, we were able to enjoy competitive games like musical chairs and the annual tradition of our treasure hunt!

They were a great way to bond with fellow band members and our sound production team Even the teachers took part in them! It was amazing to see them in a different element (other than being teachers) These are the type of memories that will last a lifetime Band camp was an excellent opportunity to foster growth, connection, and teamwork within the band. While the police presence added an interesting dynamic to the camp, it's worth considering whether it will be a part of future events. Nonetheless, the experience was valuable, and we made the most of it Band camp is an essential part of our growth as musicians, and we ' re grateful for the opportunity to come together and create music

DerbyDay!-Butmakeitculture

We had a Culture Derby Day at school where the A Cappella group performed alongside SA College's choir The orators blew everyone away with their insightful speeches, and the debate team offered a fresh perspective on the world with their strong opinions

The day was filled with excitement and talent as students sang, spoke and argued their hearts out It was the first Culture Derby Day of many to come, and it gave our school valuable exposure on the cultural front

We received countless compliments from the other schools, and it's on days like these that a learner feels truly proud to be part of a school like Eduplex.

SteppingintotheSpotlight

As someone who loves showcasing my talent through my instrument, I was over the moon when my music teacher informed me that I would be performing at the school's music concert. The minute I stepped onto the stage, I felt the spotlight shining brightly on me, and in that moment, I knew I had to give it my all

Although it wasn't a competitive event, I was determined to deliver a memorable performance While nerves got the better of me and I made a few mistakes, the experience was delightful overall The audience's applause was music to my ears, filling me with a sense of accomplishment

The entire concert was a wonderful celebration of music and talent Seeing younger students confidently playing their instruments and singing filled my heart with joy I was impressed by their dedication and enthusiasm, and it motivated me to work even harder towards my own musical goals

The concert served as a valuable learning experience, preparing us for upcoming competitions like the Pretoria Eisteddfod. I'm excited to participate and showcase my growth as a musician. This experience has encouraged me to push myself to new heights and strive for excellence in my craft.

Debating is one the most valued ways of communication in modern society especially between teens and their parents

Arguing is a fantastic way of getting your point across, especially in a structured manner like the debaters at Eduplex do The first Internal Debate of the year covered an incredibly controversial but very interesting topic: Foreign Involvement between countries.

The motions put forward in this debate by both the proposition and the opposition were very convincing, as the back and forth cycle of arguments continued. From the direct impacts of Foreign Involvement to the indirect things discussed, the overall atmosphere of the debate was one of learning and intelligent fun between both teams. Although this is called an Internal Debate, I personally feel like very little was kept internal - there was so much self expression, especially in how the speakers decided to lay out their arguments Many questions were asked in between from both teams, which just showed how invested everybody was and how curious they were to hear what the other debaters’ stance was Through slight misunderstandings and complete trust in our mentors, Mr Lloyd and Ms Goldienne, the entire group that participated had a complete blast - we all learnt a thing or two about each other as well as about debate, because afterall, what is life other than a massive learning curve to adapt to?

Orators/Redenaars:

Redenaarswas‘nJol!

Seeing the names on the list only increased my nerves, as I realised I was competing against the best orators in the school As I walked up to speak, I was so nervous I thought I would freeze, but once I started, everything just seemed to flow and went as smoothly as possible

The quality of all the speeches was probably the best I’ve ever heard; not a single person delivered a speech that was anything less than outstanding

With a vast range of topics - from “The pen is mightier than the sword,” to hidden agendas behind noble actions, to being told that we were hated (not really!), and the struggles of learning Afrikaans as a second language - I can say without a doubt that we all learned something new and kept the judges on their toes.

While the winners of the evening were Kyan, Tshegofatso, and myself, I truly believe that every single orator that night delivered a winning speech. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for orators at Eduplex.

WorldPrayerDay:WreathsofFaith

Recently, as a school, we observed World Prayer Day, a special occasion that brought our community together in a spirit of devotion and reflection. It opened my eyes to the beauty of standing firm in prayer and marked the uniqueness of prayer not only in the form Colorful Prayer Wreaths but in prayers the students made, which were heartfelt and genuine. Ultimately, this World Prayer Day served as a poignant reminder of the power of prayer and the importance of coming together as a community

I've come to appreciate the effort our school makes to introduce us to a world of prayer in assembly, during Friday line-up and even in our classrooms before school begins and at the end of the day, but the wreath initiative really touched my heart and made me aware of the privilege we have to be able to embrace our religion It also served as a symbol of unitysomething about the act of creating something together really captured our shared values of compassion, empathy, and unity perfectly, and that is truly a blessing!

The sense of togetherness that filled the air during World Prayer Day was truly remarkable However, what struck me most was the way the event celebrated our differences while highlighting our shared values The prayer wreaths were a testament to the creativity and enthusiasm of our students, showcasing their unique perspectives and talents The experience was a powerful reminder that, even in our diversity, we can find common ground and come together in a shared spirit of devotion and faith

For me, this intimate moment gave me a sense of purpose, but also had a way of reminding us that we ' re part of something bigger than ourselves The event showed us that, despite our differences, we can unite in a shared desire to connect with something greater This sense of unity and purpose is something to cherish, and I'm grateful to have been a part of it It has reminded me of the importance of nurturing my own spiritual growth and of the value of community in my life The experience has also made me more appreciative of the efforts of our school to create an environment that fosters faith, compassion, and unity I'm grateful for the opportunity to be part of a community that shares these values — Rebaone Loate

PiDay: ADayDedicatedtoMaths

Pi Day made me realise that math doesn’t have to be draining, it can also be fun at times

The day began with each class getting the opportunity to play many different math-inspired games, grouped into all the different subjects like science, math and music The games were full of adventures that made you think faster than the Flash can run and answer even faster There was so much excitement in the air and real competitiveness between the learners (which made it even more exhilarating) There weren’t just math problems to

do, but there were also cookies to decorate with icing and instruments to play The day was an adventure on its own, and memories filled with laughter were made

Eduplex - I think you ’ re getting old 23 years of adventure 23 years of memories 23 years of education

On March 19 2025, Eduplex celebrated its 23rd year The music centre was decorated with 23 balloons with chants of “I love my school” filling the air, and as Ms Tanielle’s speech added to our excitement, nostalgia washed over us all. Who knew a plot of land and a few buildings could hold so many emotions and memories?

Of course, a mention of our sponsors - Spar. A shoutout to them for their generous sponsorship and the gifts they presented us with. Blue Doritos, black Doritos, yellow Lays, black Lays…. I think it’s safe to say everyone was instilled with a bit of joy when our teachers started handing us packets of chips. At least the Grade 11 group was

Thank you Mr Grobler for the snacks

Thank you Mr Grobler for making Eduplex a place of opportunity, happiness, and excitement

You once said, Eduplex wouldn't be Eduplex without the students Sir, Eduplex wouldn't be Eduplex without you

To many more years of Inter High victories, growth, and surprises! HAPPY BIRTHDAY EDUPLEX!!!

Yellow flowers brighten up the student centre, while gold-plated trophies catch every wandering eye Shimmering lights illuminate the room, with radiant letters spelling out “Eduplex” Laurel Evening 2025 A time when the hard work, sleepless nights, the blood, sweat, and tears all become worth it It’s a time when your name, beautifully read aloud, symbolises the effort you have put in A time when you can feel your parents’ joy and gratitude beaming from their smiles and words of passion and pride. A time when you stand under the spotlight, wondering, “How on earth did I get here?”.

Sitting at the back of the student centre, nervously waiting to take the stage, trying to remember the way Ms Marinda and Ms Erika showed us how to act, Ms Nita brought all our thoughts to a halt with her echoing words. “It doesn’t matter if you achieved your milestones or goals out of spite or love for your parents. You achieved it. You deserve to be celebrated.” That’s what Eduplex did - recognised and celebrated our accomplishments

To everyone who had the privilege of attending, congratulations, and may you continue to give your all every single day To those who did not attend, may this year be the year that you are shown that you are capable of more However, don’t forget to enjoy it You’re only in high school once

Excursions/uitstappies

LewenswetenskappeGr10:UitstappienadieDitsongNationalMuseumofNaturalHistory

LifeSciencesGr11:ATriptoRietvlei

The grade 11 biology class got the opportunity to visit Rietvlei Nature Reserve on a chilly but beautiful Wednesday. We were all eager to see and experience as much as we could, and appreciated having the privilege to spend the day chatting away with our friends. Our guide drove us around through the vast landscape, explaining to us which plants and animals are indigenous to sunny South Africa. He also told us that there were currently many invasive species and a few species that were at risk of extinction. The class was super enthusiastic in answering as well as asking many questions. Arnav, yet again, made another YouTube video, acting as if he were an expert, explaining what we were doing and the amazing experience that we were having. We ended up having a blast, and the absolute highlight was obviously the trip to McDonald's at the end. With lots of convincing, Ms Marian allowed us to get the best tasting, most amazing watermelon McFizzes (ever)… Overall, the experience was very informative with tons of new and interesting facts that none of us had known before. It was definitely an excursion to remember!

Alexandra Milbrandt

For our music excursion, the grade 11s and 12s went to see Dear Evan Hansen, the musical, at the Teatro, Montecasino On the long drive there, we listened to music from various musicals and chatted amongst ourselves, gradually getting more and more excited for the musical

After struggling to find a parking spot, we finally got out of the car and headed towards the Teatro We walked through the beautiful Montecasino, walked into the theatre, found our seats, and the performance started

The cast, band, and overall performance were incredible There were tears of laughter and sadness in the audience, showcasing how powerful the story was It was a brilliant musical that definitely gave all of us a greater appreciation for live theatre and the endless time that all the artists put into the show

On the drive back home, we were all reflecting on the musical and how brilliant some of the cast were With the performance fresh in mind, we were discussing everything that happened, and it was amazing to see how different it made us feel We also had some fantastic impressions of the characters, which made us all erupt in laughter All together, it was a very memorable and fun excursion

THEGRADE10s TAKEONVOORTREKKERMONUMENT

We all secretly know why people choose history as a subject Sure, it covers fascinating topics and allows us to expand our mindsets about how the world has come to be as it is today. But the real reason we take history is for the excursions The grade 10 history excursion to the Voortrekker Monument definitely lived up to its expectations Walking into the building for the first time took my breath away as I gazed around at the marble carvings on the wall and craned my neck to look up at the high ceiling As our class of 11 learners climbed those 132 steps and listened to the stories told by our tour guide, we were awestruck by both the beauty of the monument and the experiences people went through all those years ago. Despite the hardships they faced, they continued forward and never looked back, which served as an excellent lesson for us to learn and take into consideration on our trek through life. And of course, the Royal Danish on the way back to school certainly didn’t disappoint.

JOURNEYTHROUGHHISTORY:THEGRADE11s EXPLORETHEAPARTHEIDMUSEUM

The idea of the history excursion was thrilling, until we heard that it would be at the Apartheid Museum right across from Gold Reef City I half expected to be more focused on how much more fun we would have had on the rides, but that expectation quickly changed when we arrived at the gates. Upon entry, we were told we had to share a tour guide with a group of 50 learners, which at first sounded scary, but eventually became a good opportunity to make friends, which we did.

We proceeded on our tour and I was instantly captivated by the amount of historical artefacts from Apartheid that were available to be seen. It was cool to know that someone had written a certain letter or owned a certain camera and it had been kept so that everyone today could have a glimpse into what life once was for those people. One or two short films we were shown depicting the way people used to strike or ‘toyi toyi’ and the way they were treated by the police. It even cut to clips of people explaining how much determination they had to become a united nation - something that really makes a person sit in awe of how much they were willing to go through to make a difference

As we reached the end of the tour, Nelson Mandela’s values were separated by colour, and we each got to pick a stick in the colour of the value we most relate to, and by doing so, we vowed to follow that value in everything we do and everyone we interact with. The excursion was one to remember, not only because it was educational, but it was immersive, and I got the bonus of making a new friend, which beats going to Gold Reef City on any day.

Hartbeespoort, home to one of the country's most beautiful dams, a cableway that leads to the top of the Magaliesberg mountains and apparently, the perfect destination for a Geography excursion. This excursion promised a day of wonder and excitement, along with the opportunity to miss our maths classes for the day (not at all exciting), and it definitely didn’t disappoint We started the day by receiving a bingo card, containing all the landmarks we’d be passing by on the way there What followed was a 1-and-a-half-hour drive filled with mismatched playlists and relying on Keegan to point out all the landmarks. Riding the cableway to the top of the Magaliesberg mountains was a beautiful experience filled with our great headboy's screams of terror and Aiden trying to tip our cable cart over At the top of the Magaliesberg, you will find some very expensive food stalls and an obstacle course, complemented of course by a beautiful view, which on a very clear day even allows you to see parts of Johannesburg. After our cableway adventures, we made our way to the dam wall, a true marvel of engineering and an experience I’ll never forget. It really is astonishing that such a small wall can keep an impossible amount of water behind it. Our Geography excursion was truly amazing. I got to spend time laughing, screaming and chatting with some of the people closest to me whilst also learning about our country’s amazing geography

Imagine waking up at 1 o ’clock in the morning to annoying music. Imagine your body aching. Then, finally, imagine how I felt when the loud music caused me to fall from the top bunk of my bunk bed and hit my head (I think I have brain damage now!) The lights came on, and it felt like a flash bang! I proceeded to hit my head (again!) while being forced out of the room while still in my pajamas to sing songs!

Someone cut open my flour baby and poured it all over me, making me look like Snow White! After hours of mud courses and having to deal with crawling insects, I had to do push-ups for forgetting a prefect’s name To make matters worse, while we were freezing cold, the only thing said to us was that we had no passion! No energy! And no fitness! We ended the torturous experience with a campfire (where I burned myself!) and then off to bed!

Then, when we travelled back to school, it only got worse! After a pothole and yet another hit to my head, we arrived back at Eduplex, ready to start our high school career Best time of my life!

WORLDHEARINGDAY

We celebrate World Hearing Day on the 3rd of March each year

The reason why we celebrate this day is to raise awareness of how to prevent deafness and hearing loss. The theme of this year ' s World Hearing Day was "Changing mindsets" At Eduplex, this is what our vision is: making a difference in deaf education! As a school we are constantly changing people's mindsets about deaf education We show the community that deaf learners can function and perform in a normal hearing school, just like all the other normal hearing learners. At Eduplex, inclusion is very important. The deaf learners are part of the class environment, making use of technology to perform on the same level academically At Eduplex we realise that we cannot always prevent deafness; sometimes it is just part of who you are, but you choose how you react and how you will overcome it Therefore, as a school, we are proud to represent and celebrate World Hearing Day.

It was the 13th of January - the day on which the grade eights were to go on camp I didn’t want to go, but it turned out to be an amazing experience! The camp was a wonderful, inspiring and mildly traumatising introduction to adulthood and high school. We stayed there for three days and 1 and a half nights. I say half because the prefects woke us up at one in the morning! But let’s not go into too many details it was sad and exciting and all I have to say to my fellow grade eights and those yet to come, is WELCOME TO HIGH SCHOOL!

DUCOUNCIL“DAY”CAMP

Educouncil camps are always fun and exciting. However, this year we did things differently. Instead of an actual camp, we stayed at school. I know what some of you are thinking - BORING - but on the contrary, it was a great "day" camp where we could relax and eat some really good food The day started with about 2 hours of planning, where we discussed all the new and fun activities that we would like to introduce this year (P S We have something awesome planned for day/night school just saying) After 2 excruciating hours of in-depth planning, we lit the fires in our braais and began preparing our tables and volleyball nets YES, that's right, we played volleyball! My group and I prepared a meal called "espatada", a divine Portuguese dish, along with milktart, braaibroodjies and pasta. Let's just say we ate like kings that day. After the long and exhausting day, we excitedly packed up our things so that we could also finally enjoy our long weekend off. Though the day was done, I really did enjoy every moment of it with my friends.

The Grade 8 concert was a big highlight of the year so far Not only did it mark the end of our orientation, but we thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience The prefects (Sheriffs and Deputies) and the ‘Crooks’ (Gr 8s) put in a lot of hard work to make the production a huge success. It took long hours of practice after a tiring day of school, but we all made it through with unforgettable memories, despite some bloopers Dressed as cowboys and crooks, we sang and danced our hearts out as the Sheriff was looking for his new Deputies. There was the prickly Cactus and Prikkel prancing around the stage, and our candidate Deputies with a wide range of characteristics, personalities and even some very funny accents The prim and proper Rango with his very dark secret. Karlientjie with her musicality but very bad English. Buck, who was in love with his own muscles and looks, was always ready to take on anyone and Rusty Hobbs, the lasso champ Last but not least, it was the smart, intellectual, but sassy Dakota who, with her wise words, summed the Gr 8 concert experience the best: “It made me more confident about myself.”

The moment I was appointed as part of the Edu Council was very exciting and a massive privilege, but I also realised the role comes with great responsibility It was an honour to be chosen, but I knew that I must represent my peers with dedication and always uphold the values of the school It is important to demonstrate exemplary behaviour and set a positive example for my fellow students The thought of facing challenges, whether it is the handling of conflict or speaking in front of others, made me a little anxious. Despite the initial worries, I embraced the opportunity with determination Even though I have just served the first term, I have already developed key skills in leadership, communication, teamwork, and even problem-solving. I hope that I can serve the school with dedication and pride and make a meaningful impact where I serve

AOkay, so the Valentine's Ball was LIT! Let's be real, what's a social without some good Portuguese music to get everyone moving? The vibes were on fire, and everyone looked amazing. There were amazing drinks served at Pablo’s Bar (iykyk), paired with people displaying their dancing capabilities and lack thereof on the dance floor, which really added some spice to the night It was an amazing night to celebrate love and friendship I really fell in love with the Valentine's Ball!!!

GRADE TWELVE phrases

“Explain Term 1 in one word/ phrase”

- Maddie: Idk, umm I’m free-spirited?

- Leaveill: Tantalising

- Puse: We were breathing through the wounds, but at least we were breathing

- Caity: Chaotic

- Shane: I can’t put such words in the newspaper

- Lethabo: You’re diggin’ in me

- Moopi: This term has been overwhelming as a matric, but I’ll make it in the end

- Sammy: Term 1? The beginning was fun. The end was shaky. It didn't want to finish. Felt like a prison sentence.

- Tshego: Although Term 1 was feverish, it was also a time for new beginnings, fresh starts, and setting goals for a successful academic year.

- Skyy: Ohh Bengi’nethemba, sengkhatele manje Ke Lapile Straight

- Neda: It wasn’t a term; it was a hostage situation.

Welcome to this year ’ s first edition of the Entertainment Section! You already know we ’ re here to report all of the school’s affairs to you, but just wait this term’s tea is hotter, messier, and spicier than ever.

Term 1 was a season of romance, heartbreak, and more failed talking stages than we can count. From crushes that never stood a chance to breakups that shook the school, it’s clear it was a busy term, but how hard did Cupid really work on our learners this term?

Firstly, we have Race Car Boy and Brown-haired Girl, who unfortunately didn’t make it far this year Their love seemed undeniably cute and everlasting, so it came as quite a shock to find out that there were hidden problems, or should we say hidden partners No one knows what truly happened between these two lovebirds, but seeing as Brown-haired Girl already has a new man, we ’ re sure you can connect the dots

On the topic of failure, we have our now infamous Valentine's Day proposal, which sadly did not go to plan You all know how fuzzy Valentine's Day is, with all the love and delusion blooming like flowers in Spring. Unfortunately for Fighter Boy, his hopes and dreams were taken away when he found out that his crush already had a soft spot in her heart for Soccer Boy. Eager to ask his dearly beloved, Fighter Boy was beaten to it by Soccer Boy and had to sit in silence as he watched his delusions fade into reality. Strangely enough, the beloved and Soccer Boy are still going strong, so we can really only appreciate the game and take some advice from this situation – if you have the opportunity, don’t wait! You never know who the most deserving player might be. Lastly, we just have to comment on some crush etiquette since it seems that the new year meant new obsessions Firstly, never assume that your crush is just yours It has been proven on many occasions that one person ’ s talking stage is also another person ’ s heartthrob Secondly, never hate on your fellow fangirls, like Dancer Girl did to Netball Girl You are, after all, going for the same person, and unfortunately, “ your man ” is probably interested in someone you didn’t even know existed

That’s a wrap for now Hopefully, this year brings more triumphs than tragic burnt bacon With winter knocking on our doors, we can only pray the cold doesn’t freeze every spark of romance But if it does? Don’t worry we’ll be there with our burning cups of tea to heat things up.

XOXO

MR.GROBLERINTERVIEW

1What do you think contributed most to Eduplex’s success at Inter-High Athletics this year?

The contribution was the team’s effort, and the learners who believed in the team The friendly at Oos-Moot made a massive difference as it showed the learners that they could compete with athletes bigger than themselves. I think that was the biggest contribution. But it came down to the fact of team effort and a lot of blessings.

Were there any standout moments or performances that you believe defined this year ’ s competition?

I think the overall performance of everyone who’s been on the journey this sports season was the biggest outstanding point for me. As we had learners for every item, and the learners that were supposed to perform did perform, and the learners that did not necessarily perform earlier did perform as well, so that was the standout point at the end of the day The learners who cheered and brought a positive vibe also contributed to this

2How does the school foster a culture of excellence in sports while maintaining academic balance?

We maintain the balance of sport by having a system that links with the academic system to ensure that the learners can compete during the academic breaks, thus creating a balance. I think we have enough sports disciplines at this stage, and we must pick it up to the next level, meaning to participate in higher leagues. This is how we foster the balance and plan for the academic and sportssuccess for the future.

How does Eduplex plan to build on this victory and continue its athletic success in the future?

Number one, we must get more athletes into the school Number two, we must sit down and use our previous plan to ensure that every item has an athlete I think that we will be a force to reckon with in the C-bond The athletes also need to understand that the C-bond comes with greater competition, so we must put in extra mileage We will have to refine our preseason programme and get everyone on board with it The athletes need to understand that if they receive a programme, they must follow it, so we can test them at the beginning of January to see if they did their part But we can’t just pitch up anymore and compete; that kite won’t fly We have the recipe from last year, and we have to refine it a bit, but the learners must take ownership and understand that team effort will be the only thing to keep us in the C-bond

What role do the coaches and support play in preparing the athletes for such high-level competition?

It was a collaboration every Monday where we spoke about how we performed the previous week and how we can better the performance This was an ongoing meeting that discussed where we were going When we selected the Inter-High team, the whole team came together, and everyone had a say about who had to participate in every item This was the standout point for me! And yes, we had some coaches participating in external training to better our athletes at our practices The preparation, meetings and taking ownership of the situations were the biggest roles in our success.

H O W TO PLAY B I S C A

Welcome, card game lovers! Today, we ’ re diving into Bisca, a classic trick-taking game beloved in Portugal, Brazil, and beyond. If you ’ ve never played before, don’t worry by the end of this guide, you’ll be ready to shuffle, deal, and (hopefully) win!

What You Need:

• A standard 40-card deck (remove 8s, 9s, and 10s from a regular deck)

• 2 to 4 players (but let’s focus on the 2-player version, the most popular one).

• A good poker face (optional, but recommended).

The Setup

• Shuffle and deal three cards to each player.

• Place one card face-up on the table this is the trump suit (or "trunfo")

• The remaining deck stays face-down, forming the draw pile.

Objective

Score points by winning tricks! The game ends when the deck runs out and all cards are played. Whoever has the most points wins!

Card Values (a k a “How to Count Your Spoils”)

Not all cards are created equal! Here’s their worth:

• Ace – 11 points

• 7 (Sete) – 10 points (Yes, this sneaky little card is powerful!)

• King – 4 points

• Jack – 3 points

• Queen – 2 points

• Everything else? Worthless (but still useful for winning tricks).

There are 120 points in total, and to claim victory, you need more than half (61+ points).

How to Play

• The non-dealer leads the first trick, playing any card.

• The opponent must follow suit if possible; otherwise, they can play any card, including a trump.

• The highest trump wins; if no trumps are played, the highest card of the leading suit wins

• The winner of the trick takes both cards and draws a new one from the deck.

• The loser also draws, keeping hands at three cards until the draw pile runs out.

• Once all cards are played, add up your points!

Pro Tips for Winning at Bisca

• Save your trumps for key moments! Using them too early can backfire.

• Count cards remember which high-value cards have been played

• Bluffing works throwing a weak card can trick your opponent into wasting a good one.

So, what are you waiting for? Shuffle up and let the battle begin!
