Key Stage 4: GCSE

This is an exciting time of the year for Year 8 students as they are about to make their option choices for Years 9, 10 and 11. Having studied a range of different subjects so far in school, they will now select key subjects in order to follow their own personalised learning pathway.

In Key Stage 4 (Year 9, 10 and 11) all students follow a core curriculum of: • English Language • English Literature • Mathematics • Science • Technology, Art and Design • PE Core (Students can opt to do BTEC PE, BTEC Dance, GCSE PE or Core PE) • PSHE (delivered in Form Time) Additionally: • 3 option choices, one from each block At Eltham Hill we strongly recommend that students choose a broad range of options and in particular we would like to suggest that most students take a language as part of our commitment as an International School.

Universities and employers are interested in seeing that there has been a broad-based education at this stage of a student’s development. Options are to prove to colleges and employers that students are able to work at a particular level and can manage learning and training.

Students should remember: • You are choosing subjects and not a career.

This booklet is designed to help you think about how to make your decisions. Please read it carefully.

What are GCSEs, BTECs, EBACC and IB? GCSEs: (General Certificate of Secondary Education) These are the standard qualification taken by all 16 year olds in the country. GCSEs are suitable for all abilities and are tested through examination and coursework. The grades awarded for GCSEs will be 1 – 9 for all GCSEs in 2018. 1 will be the lowest grading and 9 the highest. The Government have stated that 4 is the equivalent of a C grade.

BTECs: (Business and Technical Education Council) These are applied learning courses/work related qualifications that are available in a range of subjects.

BTECs can be offered at 3 different levels. Level 2 is offered at this key stage at EHS. BTECs consist of coursework-based assignments, which are assessed by teachers in school. Under the new guidelines at least 40% of the course will be externally assessed by exam. The tariff for BTECS has been reduced and they will now count for one GCSE each in a student’s score for Attainment and Progress 8. They are not grounding for ‘A’ level but are highly recommended for students wanting to pursue BTEC level 3 (equivalent to two A Levels).

EBaac: (English Baccalaureate) The EBacc is awarded to students who score at least C grades in English, maths, two Sciences, history or geography and a modern foreign language at GCSE. There is no extra study or work to do outside of these GCSEs. The advantage of choosing to complete the courses leading to the EBaac is that it ensures students have followed a broad and balanced curriculum and will have a wide range of options available to them at Post 16.

The IB is a course that has been designed to challenge students to have a broad curriculum in the sixth form and is highly regarded by colleges and universities. Eltham Hill will be the only school in Greenwich offering this course to our students at post 16.

The course is taught like A levels, but covers more subjects.

Students will have the opportunities to: Develop practical and theoretical knowledge and understanding of the factors that underpin the effective training of a dancer at a professional level. Understand how physical and performance skills effect the ability and outcome of a dance performance. Have the opportunity to take part in dance performance events to showcase their own and class choreography.

Course Content Practical Content: Students study a variety of styles of dance in depth, from which 3 practical assessments count towards their final grades.

Skills Developed: In each practical dance assignment, performance skills are developed to a high level which must also be applied in a performance situation. Students must develop a sound knowledge of dance technique, human anatomy and how the body works for a professional dancer.

Additionally, students must learn to observe, analyse, and evaluate their own and other students’ performance and offer advice for them to improve their skills.

Exams and Assessment Examination Board: Edexcel Practical: Includes practical assessment grades from three different dance performances - 100% of the final mark.

Controlled Assessment: Includes assessment in the following: • Letter of application for the final showcase event • Analysis, evaluation and action plans for improvement • Written work to evidence all practical experiences on the course

An essential part of the course is the planning, performing and evaluation of a solo dance showcase, highlighting students’ performance and technical abilities. Students must ensure they have their correct and full P.E/dance kit for every lesson and be aware this is a fully practical course.

You love dancing and have good skills and understanding in a variety of dance genres. You enjoy learning about the history of dance and where and how different dance styles began.

BTEC dance lends itself to Level 3 study at A Level or BTEC National Extended / Subsidiary Diploma’s.

The assessment is part of the final examination grade and forms part of the controlled assessment. Students must ensure they have their correct and full P.E kit for every lesson.

How do I make the right choice?

Consider your strengths and the feedback you have been given by your subject teachers. Ask your Design Technology teacher to show you an exemplar GCSE portfolio. This will give you an understanding of what is involved in each subject area and you can then make an informed decision.

Art & Design - Fine Art

Art & Design - Fine Art Candidates are required to work in one or more area(s) of Fine Art, such as those listed below. They may explore overlapping areas and combinations of areas: • Painting and drawing • Mixed media, including collage and assemblage • Sculpture • Installation • Printmaking: relief, screen processes • Lens-based and/or light-based media and new media.

Candidates are required to integrate critical, practical and theoretical study in Fine Art that encourages direct engagement with original work and practice. Where direct engagement may not be possible, the expectation is that work should include appropriate and explicit critical study. Candidates will be expected to demonstrate practical skills in the context of specific chosen areas of study or any combined areas of study.

Course Content Candidates will be expected to demonstrate skills and techniques in the context of their chosen area(s) of study within Fine Art: • Making appropriate use of colour, line, tone, texture, shape and form using different approaches to recording images, such as, observation, analysis, expression and imagination • Showing in their work an understanding of the conventions of representational and abstract/ nonrepresentational imagery and genres • Investigating different ways of working, as appropriate to their chosen area(s) of study within Fine Art • Providing evidence of an understanding of spatial qualities, composition, rhythm, scale and structure • Providing evidence of the use of safe working practices.

Exams and Assessment A final grade is calculated by combining marks from the portfolio of work Unit 1 with the externally set task Unit 2. The portfolio accounts for 60% of the marks and the externally set task for 40%. Portfolio work and exam preparation are very important. The course is three years long.

Why choose Art & Design – Fine Art? If you choose this path, it should be because you have a vision and are passionate about learning the fine arts. You shouldn't choose a subject that you don't believe you will be happy with. It will allow you to expand on your creativity. Many industries such as fashion, film/television, education, art therapy, arts & culture management, and the entertainment industry are looking for people with an art background.

Art and Design - Photography The coursework projects can cover amongst others the following areas: Portraiture, documentary, Photo-journalism, Environmental photography, Experimental photography, Photomontage and Working from objects, still life and/ or from the natural world

Course Content You will gain knowledge and understanding of how ideas, feelings and meanings are shown in photography. You will learn how photography is important in social, historical and cultural ways.

You will learn about different photographic processes, both past and present and gain an understanding of how these have been important for photographers.

You will be expected to demonstrate photographic skills in the following ways: • Make best use of colour, line, tone, shape, texture, pattern and form • Show how you can use different viewpoints, compositions, depths of field and movement • Respond to an idea, issue, concept, theme, or brief • Make best use of camera lenses, filters and lighting, film and/ or digital techniques • Learn techniques about developing or downloading pictures, image manipulation, printing, presentation, layout and mounting • Use safe working practices

Art and Design - Photography

This is a full course in art and design Photography lasting three years. This qualification offers you the opportunity to develop skills in the use of digital imagery. Activities and projects will be organised into a portfolio of work- Unit 1 and Unit 2 is the final exam project.

GCSE – Food Preparation and Nutrition

Food Preparation and Nutrition Ideally year 8 students would be working securely at level 5 or above by the end of the year. They would have made good progress throughout Key Stage 3 demonstrating strong skills and sound understanding in each of the focus areas assessed in DT, i.e. designing, planning, making and evaluating. In addition, students should have sound practical cookery skills and have keen interest in Science and have performed well in this subject throughout year 7 and 8.

Course Content This course is designed to allow students to develop practical cooking skills as well as a theoretical understanding of food preparation and nutrition. Practical skills will be developed throughout the 3-year course and will range from preparation and vegetables to baking dough, pastries and cakes.

The theory element of the course will include understanding different nutrients and the role they play in a healthy diet, chemical properties of ingredients, food safety and food provenance.

Exams and Assessment (Three year course) Year 9 -The first year will consist of a range of projects designed to develop basic theory and practical skills.

Year 10 Unit 2 Assessment 1: The Food Investigation Assessment (10 Hours) 20% of the total marks available will be allocated to a scientific food investigation (6 pages), which will assess the learner's knowledge, skills and understanding in relation to the scientific principles underlying the preparation and cooking of food.

Assessment 2: The Food Preparation Assessment (15 Hours) 40% of the total marks available will be allocated to the task (15 pages) which assesses the learner’s knowledge, skills and understanding in relation to the planning, preparation, cooking and presentation of dishes to form a menu. Both projects include both written and practical elements. 60% of the final grade.

Year 11: Unit 1 This unit will consist of two sections both containing compulsory questions in a written 1hour 30mins paper, 80 marks, 40% of the final grade. Section A: questions based on stimulus materials. Section B: a range of question types to assess all content related to food and nutrition.

Why Choose Food Preparation and Nutrition?

If you have an interest in cooking and want to learn how ingredients work by developing knowledge of nutrition in cooking, then it’s the subject for you. Lessons for all specialisms will be delivered through theory, practical tasks and controlled assessment preparation. They require students to learn through a range of approaches so that a broad spectrum of skills can be developed. Subjects linked to Food Preparation and Nutrition include Health and Social Care, Science, PE and ICT.

Course Content The GCSE in Design and Technology Product Design has been designed to provide a broad educational basis for further training, for further education or for moving into employment within the design and engineering sector. This is achieved by ensuring that students develop the general skills, knowledge and understanding needed within the sector.

GCSE Product Design covers a wide range of activities based on designing and making products that are manufactured using materials such as wood, metal and plastics in many forms. As well as learning hand skills, you will use a range of industrials processes to shape and form materials into functioning products. Over the course of three years you will develop a whole range of creative designing and making skills, technical knowledge and understanding relating to Product Design and invaluable transferable skills such as problem solving and time management

Why choose Product Design?

Product Design involves a broad approach to the designing and making of innovative / new products. This subject is aimed at those interested in the way business and industry identifies potential products and successfully designs and manufactures them. It is not for those who intend to design and manufacture an item that already exists. However, you can take an existing product and improve it or develop an entirely new product. Designers and manufacturers try to find out what the public want from old products - how they can be improved. Designers also want to know what the public wants from new designs.

GCSE - Textiles

Textiles provides you with skills, knowledge and opportunities to build your confidence in designing, making and exam theory. Through a range of projects you will explore designing and textiles processes using research as a foundation in order to experiment through a variety of textiles design skills and specialist techniques. The purpose of the projects throughout year 9 will provide an insight into the expectations at GCSE level coursework. Exam theory and different assessment points throughout the year will assist you in your journey through the course.

You are expected to have the following equipment for the course and bring to each lesson the following: Basic equipment - Pen/pencil/ruler/rubber/sharpener/black fine liner/colouring pencils Textiles equipment - Needles/unpicker/fabric for own projects throughout the year Revision book - GCSE Design & Technology Textiles AQA Revision Guide (by CPG books). These are available from Amazon or WHSmiths A4 and A3 display folder - The works/WHSmiths/amazon To support your daughter: • Ensure that she is doing homework and on target for meeting deadlines that are set (These are issued to students and should be recorded in planners) • If you have a sewing machine at home, support and encourage her to use it to boost confidence • Regularly, sit down and let her explain her work to you and offer feedback on quality of work produced.

• Students are expected to purchase their own fabrics and revision books for coursework.

Course content Controlled assessment - 50% Coursework – comprised of 5 Units.

• Unit 1 - Researching the design context - A combination of primary and secondary research to provide a solid starting point for design ideas in unit 2 • Unit 2 – Designing - a range of design skills using different media including CAD to develop ideas. Extensive sampling of decorative techniques evident with experimentation in preparation for making the product.

• Unit 3 – Making – independently working on product. Planning ahead and time management essential. After school sessions available one night per week in order for students to have access to specialist tools and equipment • Unit 4 – Evaluation - Evaluation occurs throughout the controlled assessment units. A large amount of evaluation is undertaken on the finished product (testing it against design specification, User tests, what would need adapting for industry etc.)

• Unit 5 - Spelling/communication and presentation of folder throughout coursework

GCSE - Textiles Exam - 50% Exam paper 2 hours. Section A of exam paper is based on designing. This is preliminary material (sent by the exam board) that students will have the opportunity to study independently prior to the exam. Section B of the paper is theory based on design and production processes. This relates to the coursework that is produced as well as revision lessons leading up to the exam.

Why choose Textiles?

Textiles is a course that will offer you challenge and expect you to be an independent worker. Creativity dominates the course through designing with a range of media (including Photoshop). Organisation, resilience and using your initiative are vital skills during practical work when creating construction and decorative techniques.

It offers you the opportunities to research exciting topics through developing your literacy skills as well as demonstrating your creativity through designing using a range of media including digital means. Time management and self-motivation ensure that you are fully confident in creating a range of constructive and decorative techniques that formulate spectacular outcomes in the form of garments, soft furnishings. This course can lead onto college and university courses such as Foundation in art and design, interior design then degree courses.

Business Studies

Business Studies Business Studies is relevant to everyone and an essential choice for future working life. As a consumer you might like to find out how businesses persuade you to buy their products and services through clever marketing. As a future employee you may like to know how businesses recruit employees, and how to manage your income. You may have an enquiring mind and be interested in learning about the world around you, and what it is that makes someone a great entrepreneur. You might have an interest in business, and want to start your own business one day. GCSE Business Studies will help you to understand all this and more.

Course Content This specification is divided into three units of content: Unit 1: Introduction to small business - Compulsory, Externally assessed Contains 5 topics (Multiple Choice): • Spotting a business opportunity • Showing enterprise • Putting a business idea into practice • Making the start-up effective • Understanding economic context Unit 2: Investigating small business – Compulsory, Internally assessed Controlled Assessment (students get to investigate a small local business of their choice in local area - Research /Investigation (6 hours), Analysis/Evaluation of task (3 hours)

Unit 3: Building a business - contains 5 topics: • Marketing • Meeting customer needs • Effective financial management • Effective people management • The wider world effecting business (Students are required to answer from section a, b and c and questions will comprise of a combination of multiple choice, short and extended answer, data response and scenario based questions with a total of 90 marks)

Why choose Business Studies?

Many pupils progress onto A level Business Studies and Economics courses. A Business course could lead to work in a business-related profession such as accountancy, law, or marketing. It can help in many careers such as sport and the leisure industry, but, more broadly, Business Studies develops many 'skills for life' which can benefit you whichever career you may choose.

You will become skilled in making decisions, being creative, solving problems, understanding finance, dealing with data, communicating and working as part of team.

Computer Science Computing gives students a real, in-depth understanding of how computer technology works. It offers an insight into what goes on ‘behind the scenes’, including computer programming, the logic of a computer and how everything connects together.

Course Content • Computer systems is a theory based unit covering topics as diverse as hardware & software, networks and a brand new chapter on cyber security.

• Computational thinking, algorithms and programming is also a theory based unit covering topics such as binary, logic and the theory behind programming.

• Finally students must complete a programming project. Pupils will learn how to program increasingly complex applications in a programming language called Python.

Exams and Assessment • Computer systems. (40%) This unit is assessed by a written paper, which has a mixture of shortand long- answer questions.

• Computational thinking, algorithms and programming. (40%) Pupils will need to produce an indepth report on a topic chosen from a set of options supplied by the exam board.

• Programming project. (20%) Students code a solution in Python to tasks chosen from a set of options supplied by the exam board.

BTEC First Award - Travel & Tourism

BTEC First Award - Travel & Tourism The skills you’ll learn through studying BTEC Travel and Tourism in travel and tourism are very dynamic and cover a wide range of career opportunities.. In completing the course, students develop their written and verbal communication skills and develop a deeper understanding of how leisure and tourism businesses take full advantage of their environment and turn them into profitable businesses that both customers and employees benefits from. You will develop your communication and presentation skills and key skills such as self-management, team working, business awareness and customer awareness, problem solving, communication, basic literacy and numeracy, a positive attitude to work, and the use of IT. You’ll have the opportunity to practice a range of travel and tourism related skills including booking holidays, advising customers on how to solve problems abroad and locating international airports.

Course Contents The core units are: Unit 1: The UK Travel and Tourism Sector – this unit covers the main types of tourism in the UK, the contribution that travel and tourism makes to the UK economy and the different component industries that make up the UK travel and tourism sector.

Unit 2: UK Travel and Tourism Destinations – this unit covers what the different types of UK destinations have to offer, as well as locating tourist UK destinations and routes.

Drama Drama is a practical subject where students will take part in workshops exploring a range of practitioners and playwrights. Students explore the cultural, social and political context of a range of texts and techniques developing their own practice and voice.

Course content GCSE Drama will require candidates to study one complete performance text plus one additional key extract from a second performance text. The interpretation of the complete performance text will be assessed through written examination. Candidates will also participate in two performances, one devised and one text. The devised piece is based on the work and methodologies of a theatre practitioner or genre in response to a stimulus provided at the beginning of the course.

History We follow the Edexcel Schools History Project Syllabus which includes the following topics:

History

Course Content PAPER 1: The History of Medicine Through Time (30% of GCSE) British Thematic Study with Historic Environment After studying this fascinating area of development, a trip to the doctor will never be the same again! We will analyse the key individuals who revolutionised medicine, like Edward Jenner and Louis Pasteur and how ideas about what makes us ill developed from astronomy and superstition to germs and genetics. We will also study the key people who have treated illness since Roman times and how our towns went from filthy infested plague holes to rows of back to back houses cursed with cholera. Lastly, we get to examine the gory and gruesome history of surgery in order to understand how this branch of medicine was developed during World War 1 in the dangerous and dirty trenches of the Western Front.

PAPER 2: Period Study and British Depth Study: The Wild West – America 1845 – 1890: Period Study (20%) A time of cowboys and Indians, gold miners and Mormons, Crazy Horse and General Custer; the history of the American West has been both inspiring and violent. We start by looking at the lives of the Native Americans and then move on to consider what made the first white settlers abandon their prosperous lands in the East to brave starvation and scalping on the Oregon Trail, only to end up farming the dry, arid plains of the West. Finally, we analyse the key events that led to the conflicts that saw blood on the Plains and the Native Americans losing their homelands forever.

Early Elizabethan England: A British depth study (20%) In this unit we will delve deeper into Britain's past in order to explore life and politics in early Elizabethan England. Often depicted by historians as the ‘Golden Age’ in British history, due to the expansion of empire and the flowering of poetry, music and literature, society undeniably prospered whilst religious battles between Catholics and Protestants died down. However, modern historians have questioned this romantic view by pointing out that it was also a period of plots and conspiracies to assassinate the Queen, and that for the poorest members of society, life was full of pain, poverty and pauperism. We will examine the evidence to find out the truth and reach our own interpretations.

PAPER 3: Weimar and Nazi Germany 1918-39: Modern Depth Study (30%) This study focuses on analysing how and why Germany changed from one of the most democratic nations in the world to a totalitarian dictatorship ruled by the Nazis in the short space of 12 years. We will explore how despite being on the brink of revolution in 1918, the country successfully stabilised itself during the Weimar Republic, before turning to the dramatic events that enabled Hitler to rise to power. We end by looking at the consequences this had for women, youth and minority groups such as gypsies and Jews in order to learn important lessons for the future. As Maya Angelou stated; 'History, despite its unwrenching pain cannot be unlived, but if faced with courage, need not be lived again'.

History Exams and Assessment A new grading structure is being introduced; grade 1-9 will now replace the familiar A* to G grading scale. There will be no controlled assessment and all three history exams must be sat at the end of the course in Year 11.

Music Music at GCSE level includes modules in performance, composition and listening skills. It is a creative, practical and academic subject.

Course Contents You will be required to analyse 8 set works from four areas of study, including baroque music, musical theatre and samba. In addition, you will have to compose your own music based on a chosen style, and perform on your chosen instrument.

Philosophy and Ethics The GCSE course in Philosophy and Ethics covers a number of topics of relevance to living in Britain today. Students will consider, study and analyse current trends and accepted norms on a range of topics in applied ethics: abortion, cloning, euthanasia, animal rights, capital punishment, terrorism, and torture.

The GCSE course explores moral and ethical issues that we all face; students evaluate choices and news points and issues in society. The department follows the WJEC Syllabus A and B. The religions studied are Christianity and Islam as well as New Atheism.
