Northbrooks Secondary Interact Club Key Activities / Programmes for Interactors of Northbrooks Secondary are as follows: 1. Green Living @ NSE 8 Sept 2013 Mr Patrick Tay Teck Guan BBM MP for Nee Soon GRC (Nee Soon East) was the Guest-of-honour. With the support of NEA, we were able to educate the residents and raise awareness of dengue prevention and the recent anti-littering campaign through their exciting exhibits and skits. We also set up a booth to sell our “Project Kaleidoscope” books and to teach the public to make the recycled art and craft flowers. 2. Singapore Biennale 2013 Interact Green Club also participated in the Singapore Biennale 2013 through the Artists-in-school Project “Garden by the Way”, a clever spin on the phrase, “Gardens by the Bay” to encourage the public to go green. Interactors learnt to make beautiful flowers from spray-paint and plastic bottles through a workshop. The artwork was displayed at the area outside the National Library from 26 Oct 2013 to the 16 February 2014. 3. National Youth Business Challenge 2013 On the 6 July 2013, 6 members of our club participated in the National Youth Business Challenge organised by Ngee Ann Polytechnic and held at Changi City Point. Participants came up with an earthfriendly business plan and market their products to the public. The Interactors created their own handmade products from recycled materials that won the Gold Award and the 2nd Most Earth Friendly Business Award in the competition out of 15 finalists. 4. National Pushcart Challenge 2013 Towards the end of the year, 2 teams of our Interactors also participated in the National Pushcart Challenge organised by Republic Polytechnic. One team made it through to the finals which were held at Causeway Point on the 16 and 17 November 2013. We collaborated with the social enterprise, Cat Welfare Society, to sell their products and raise awareness of their social cause of caring of the welfare of stray cats in Singapore. It was an extremely trying but good learning experience for the team who had to man a pushcart for two full days.
The team earned a total revenue of more than $1300, and was awarded with the Most Innovative Product Idea Award out of the 15 finalist schools. 5. Red Hill Food Distribution 2014 Interactors were present to help with the annual food distribution drive organized by the Rotary Club of Pandan Valley on 25 Feb 2014. We helped the sick and elderly by delivering food to their homes in Red Hill. This gave the Interactors a sense of achievement in assisting the needy and giving back to society. 6. Youth for Environment Day (YED) Upcycling Competition This competition aimed to increase youths’ awareness on the concept of upcycling as a way to reduce waste. Our interactors cleverly created an upcycled product (a trolley) from damaged school desks. Through the activity, the interactors learnt to transform unwanted items into practical lifestyle product, which they and their peers can use and extend the lifespan of items by repurposing them.
7. National Youth Envirolympics Challenge Enmazing Race 2014 6 teams of interactors participated in the National Youth Envirolympics Challenge (NYEC) Enmazing Race 2014 which was held in conjunction with Youth for the Environment Day (YED) on 19 April 2014. NYEC 2014 Enmazing Race is part of an annual initiative organized by youths from Ci Yuan CC Youth Executive Committee and the National Youth EnvirOlympics Council, which aims to promote environmental awareness. During the amazing race, interactors travelled to various environmental hotspots such as Gardens by the Bay, Fort Canning Park and Marina Barrage and learnt more about the environment through station games. The amazing race was designed to echo this year’s NYEC theme of “Chope! Gaia is mine!”, emphasizing on reconnecting the urban dwellers with nature and encouraging greater environmental efforts from individuals.
