Biesse Open Day

W

ith the cancellation of next year’s AWISA exhibition and no clear indication of when or if it returns, manufacturers will rely on online presentations and in-house open days for their technology fix. Suppliers will also need to do more to keep their products in front of customers. Biesse is one supplier that has already shown the industry what is possible at their own recent Sydney open day by broadening the scope of that occasion in cooperation with leading trade partners to create a significant industry event. Let’s say at this event that Biesse was the cake, and the partners were the cream. Partners included Airtight dust extraction; Alphacam CAD-CAM; Busch vacuum solutions; Diamut stone tooling; Dotmar engineering plasics; Flexijet laser measuring and stone software; ForestONE sustainable interior design products; Hettich cabinet hardware; Leitz tooling; Mozaik software from CADMATE; Planit CAD software; Polytec decorative board and laminates; Pytha 3D CAD; 3D Kitchen CAD software; Staircon CAD-CAM and Surteco laminates and edge bandings.

Biesse’s new identity is centered around the leading machinery producer as a ‘Master of Materials’ and brings the diverse range of Biesse equipment together with new corporate colours. No longer “Biesse Group’ now it’s one company with a single identity and purpose. Raphaël Prati, chief marketing & communications officer said at Ligna, “Our customers create products that are increasingly multi-material and Biesse provides a vast range of skills through a single brand.” In Sydney an extensive range of products were on display, catering for all types of production with various materials through Biesse Wood, Biesse Stone, Biesse Glass and Biesse Materia. Michael Bullock is CEO of Biesse Australia and New Zealand. He said, “At Ligna we

Biesse’s new identity is centered around the leading machinery producer as a ‘Master of Materials’ and brings the diverse range of Biesse equipment together with new corporate colours. Biesse are committed to the future of the industry and an example of this responsibility is the inclusion of TAFE students and instructors. In Sydney in September students from TAFE were able to see technologies and processes they would not see in the TAFE College and likely not see in their workplaces. They could ask questions they would not think of asking in a TAFE environment. TAFE training is based on outcomes so it is regimented, students would not see the outcomes Biesse is able to achieve. Mike Moritz from Custom Flatpack is one event visitor we spoke to about his experience with Biesse. He said,“We feel like we are part of the Biesse family; the spare parts and support we get are great.” Mike recently changed from a locally made flatbed routing machine to a Biesse CNC cell and reports he not only doubled his production, but his router cutters lasted three times as long and all this with no people working on it. He said,“It’s the best investment I’ve made in my life.” z

Elton Group What Is Eveneer? Eveneer is Elton Group’s timber veneer offering and comes in a range of finishes and formats catering for different applications, efficiency of manufacture and installation, design and sustainability. Eveneer Raw, Eveneer Prefinished, Eveneer WoodWall and Eveneer Profiles.

Supplier Magazine recently sat down with the team at Elton Group to discuss their curated range of timber veneers and take a look at what they have in store for the future.

What differentiates Elton Group from other timber veneers suppliers? With a background of sourcing and supplying timber veneer stretching back 80 years, Elton Group work closely with our specialist suppliers in Italy, Germany and Japan. Our design-led team identify the nuances of the Australian market and ensure products are developed and curated for Australian design trends, conditions and standards.

Joiners and Furniture makers appreciate working with Eveneer because its quality and evenness in colour and pattern mean that you can achieve a consistent, wellbalanced look over the smallest or largest projects. Eveneer is also available as a prefinished (pre –polished) board; saving the time and cost involved in sending panels offsite to specialist polishers.

Why timber veneer? With the influx of plastic laminate and other printed timber-look finishes, the ability to provide authentic timber veneers to the interiors market is important. It is unfortunate that many end users expecting a real timber finish often end up with a substituted plastic laminate. The Eveneer brand was first launched in 1993 and is now celebrating its 30th year. Eveneer Raw and Eveneer Prefinished present refined, considered, large ranges that are consistently reviewed and updated. We have also designed complementary products such as the 3 dimensional fluted and reeded Eveneer Profiles and the unique Eveneer WoodWall a prefinished timber veneer that can be applied directly to walls and ceilings.

Timber veneer brings nature to space. It is warm to touch and brings a very different tactility and personality to projects. Research has confirmed that natural materials and textures in our built environment reduce stress and increase productivity.

Our Eveneer Raw veneers consist of both natural and recut (ALPIlignum) species. Being supplied in raw form pressed on board, these veneers offer the opportunity to polish or stain to your own specification. Eveneer Raw Naturals consist of carefully selected, assembled and sometimes colour toned veneer sheets taking the guess work out of natural veneers. Eveneer Raw ALPIlignum is an environmentally sourced recut timber veneer designed and curated specifically for the for the Australian market in collaboration with our long-term supplier ALPI. It is produced by peeling logs of plentiful, fast growing tree species into continuous veneer which is coloured with natural dyes and reassembled as ‘square’ logs. These logs are then re-sliced in a variety of strategic ways to achieve a diverse range of curated colours, grains, and patterns, some replicating traditional species no longer

responsibly sourced or available, and others unique designs, patterns, and colours; the result of collaboration with international designers including Piero Lissoni, Ettore Sottsass, the Campana Brothers and Patricia Urquiola.

Why is Eveneer ALPIlignum more sustainable than other veneers? Our brand motto is ‘Materially Different’ and Eveneer ALPIlignum exemplifies this aspiration as materially responsible, unique and superior to competitors. ALPIlignum is produced from fast growing poplar and ayous trees grown in FSC certified agricultural plantations and sustained yield forests. State of the art veneer slicing technology maximises the yield of timber from the tree and therefore reduces use of our precious forest resources. Grain, pattern and colour are consistent across sheets, ensuring quality and significantly reducing wastage. Specifiers value the fact that there are no surprises on site. What they expect is what they get.

How have technology and innovation impacted timber veneer/your industry? Whilst the term curated can be overused, Elton Group take the curation of our product

Supplier October/November 2023

ranges very seriously, with a dedicated R&D team liaising with our specifiers and suppliers, and leading and responding to innovation, technology, and forecasting design trends. Optimising saws have made a big change to the furniture industry, particularly in the use of timber veneer. Where veneer was once selected in the warehouse by the furniture maker for component pieces these days it is more likely ordered as standard sized panels already pressed on board, sight unseen and components are cut from the standard sheets. Eveneer® takes the guess work out of this process with patterns and colours being carefully controlled so that there are no surprises or glaring clashes of colour and pattern. The veneer is suited to standard panel sizes minimising waste. Eveneer is also available as a ready-to-use timber surface with state-of-the-art finishing in a range of polishes designed to enhance the essential character of the wood through natural texture, low gloss levels and anti-fingerprint technology and edging to match. As the availability of in-house polishing reduces, our Eveneer Prefinished range takes away the uncertainty, time and cost involved in sending components out for polishing.

10 years ago, Elton Group added another game-changing product, WoodWall, to the Eveneer range. Further pushing the boundaries of sustainability, efficiency, and application. WoodWall combines patented veneer cutting technology, backing and polishing to create a pre-finished veneer that can be applied directly to walls or ceilings, like a wallpaper, covering 3 times the area of a traditional veneer. There is no need for extra framing and substrate and it is delivered to site in easy to carry boxes making transport and installation more efficient. It can even be installed on an occupied site, with minimal disturbance.

What are you working on now? To honour our commitment to delivering authentic and natural materials driven by innovation and sustainability, our business continues to develop and create ranges to meet the future needs of our specifiers, cabinetmakers and end users. As a solution focused organisation, it is our vision to remain relevant, design focused and to support our customers with integrity and generosity, sharing our knowledge and expertise. We have just launched our new product –Eveneer Profiles, a solid timber profile suite to match our Eveneer range and add dimensionality to joinery and wall panelling in a beautiful and efficient way. Available in 3120 x 1220 sheets or panels. z

Machinery

Essential CNC Cabinet Manufacturing

Feature

Article by Philip Ashley

T

he two machine types most used by cabinet manufacturers are the CNC processing centre, often still referred to as a ‘point-to-point’ machine; and the edge-banding machine. These two machines are subject to continuous technical and performance improvements by suppliers and constitute the two most ‘must-have’ machines in the cabinet factory. There is little doubt the kitchen has become the centre of any home. Once a space for preparing meals and dining, the Australian kitchen is now part of a multi-purpose central hub; often open-plan where family and friends congregate for many diverse reasons. The modern kitchen is a place where design takes the fore whether it’s country; contemporary or modern Hampton. Manufacturing kitchens can be a great business, but some of the principal conditions are speed of production, flexibility of production, the right price, and good quality. The right equipment is essential to meet these manufacturing needs and CNC controlled machines deliver on all four of these conditions. Since the early 1980’s, sales of CNC machines in Australia have climbed steadily and it is hard to imagine how anyone could compete in today’s cabinet industry without them. The most common CNC machine for cabinet manufacture is one with a flat nesting table where all the parts on an entire sheet are cut (routered out) in the one processing operation. From there, panels are edged on an edge banding machine and in some cases, drilled for cabinet hardware fittings supplied by

companies such as Häfele and Hettich. An automatic infeed and outfeed of panels coupled with a label printer are almost an essential option to reduce your labour costs even further. Most experts agree that nesting is ideally suited to our more flexible, small and medium-scale businesses; the scale of most Australian cabinet shops. In Europe with the huge potential for thousands of kitchens a year, a beam (panel) saw bookcutting four sheets at a time is more widely used.

Essential CNC CNC machines add a great deal to your product. They reduce the cost of manufacture in several ways. In no particular order, the potential for reduced labour, or using non-skilled labour is significant. The quality of your product is no longer dependent on workers or machine settings such as a badly set scoring blade on a sliding table panel saw, or poorly set manual machine adjustments. Less handling of panels due to reduced machining processes also adds to the quality of the panels. And one cannot argue either the increased speed of production or the predictable production times of a machine controlled by a computer. In the early 1980’s Biesse became the default CNC machine. Like Hoover is to vacuum cleaners, Biesse was to CNC routing. The advent of the low-cost flatbed router by local suppliers such as Multicam (many others have come and gone but Multicam remain) contributed to the popularity of nested based manufacturing (NBM) that took off here in Australia, the United Kingdom and United States of America. Biesse, Homag (including Weeke), SCM (including Morbidelli) and HolzHer were major early suppliers, followed by Felder and more recently, KDT who now own Masterwood. Another quality CNC machine with a long history is Busellato, now sold in Australia by Stirling Machinery.

Supplier October/November 2023

On a popular digital marketplace for buying and selling new and used machinery there are currently 455 CNC routers for sale in Australia (59 are used) listed between $8,000 and $176,000 with the average being $72,657. At around this average investment Beyond Tools can supply a stand-alone CNC nesting machine with automatic tool change for standard 2.4m by 1.2m sheets. Most suppliers can offer a comprehensive range of CNC products to meet every specific manufacturing need, including those producing products from advanced materials such as plastics and alloys. For kitchen benchtops in stone, CDK supply a complete range of processing equipment. Farnese also produces excellent CNC equipment for processing stone.

The Essential Others The CNC processing centre is the star in any cabinet factory, provided it’s maintained correctly; you have efficient kitchen design and machine software, and you are using tooling that is matched to the performance of your machine. CNC machines delivered over the last decade have increasingly been fitted with software to assist you in managing the maintenance of your important investment. In the not-too distant future this software may be supported by artificial intelligence that could read the

performance of the machine and provide an even more predictive capability. Design and manufacturing (optimising and production) software plays an important part in the efficient production of components for kitchens that are ever-more focused on the specific needs or desires of the customer. In many cases, the ability to offer the customer exactly what they need (or want) could be the difference between a sale or the customer looking for something better. Planit and 3D Kitchen are two software suppliers featured in this magazine that can provide professional solutions that will enhance not only your production, but your customer presentation. High-performing sports cars come fitted with high-performing tyres and your manufacturing setup is no different. The rule of thumb for tooling (router bits and saws) is that 10% of the initial cost of the machine should be allocated to the tools and in Australia, sadly this is usually not the case. The proper tool has a potential to increase both the production speed and quality of your panels by a fair margin. Tooling suppliers such as Leitz and Leuco in particular produce tools matched to your specific production needs and you should talk to these people, don’t just buy from a catalogue.

www.suppliermagazine.com.au

14

Feature | Machinery

The edge produced by your cutting tools is critical to further machining processes such as edge-banding. Quality edge bands supplied by companies like Surteco should be applied to quality edges. One very wise company once said the machine is really only a tool holder; it’s the tooling that produces the product. This is partly true as a poorly cut edge does not provide the optimum base for a quality product. Of course, there are other factors involved but it’s fair to say that once one of your processes breaks down in terms of quality, anything further you do to that product will be compromised.

Essential Processes Nested based manufacturing requires a minimum of one CNC routing machine or a machining centre (point to point) with a flat table, and an edge bander. An alternate process used extensively in Europe is cell based manufacturing. Here the requirement is for a

Supplier October/November 2023

pressure beam saw, edge bander and a rail-type machining centre. For the small to medium manufacturer in Australia the high cost of a cell based system with the added floorspace required for a beam saw, is a major drawback. For manufacturers who also produce in solid timber, a rail type CNC machine could have advantages, but beam saws are not as widely used as they once were. In fact, one major supplier has decided not to produce any standalone machines of this type. Simplifying the manufacturing process is every cabinet makers endgame and software is key to this goal. Software eliminates the need for factory workers to make adjustments that may be done in error. Software streamlines the flow of materials and optimises the use of your stock. Automatic material handling ‘warehouses’ suitable for larger contract manufacturers and managed by sophisticated software are becoming more common even for

Australian-sized businesses as automation technology improves. And software is essential in identifying the service requirements of your CNC equipment to prevent unexpected stoppages. In our next issue we will take a look at edge banding, the process that’s seen huge technological leaps over the last fifteen years and through Biesse, a ground-breaking advance shown at the recent Ligna fair in Germany. Once a machine that was feared by operators, the modern computer controlled edge bander adds the finishing touch to your product. In addition to the panel surface, the panel edge is often the first thing your customers touch when they look at your display and it’s likely the thing that will raise most eyebrows if it displays a visible glue-line. The edge banding machine, along with the CNC processing machine, completes the two most significant pieces of equipment in the modern cabinet shop. z

Smart, customised tooling solutions all in a day’s work

I

n a competitive marketplace and challenging economy, smart businesses naturally look for ways to improve efficiencies and productivity, cut costs and waste, and gain that all-important edge over competitors. For those who operate in the flat panel market, CNC and tooling specialists Panel Tools exists to deliver valuable solutions on those metrics and more. Panel Tools’ co-founder and CEO, Fraser Killen says the company thrives on collaborative efforts between themselves, customers and tooling manufacturers. “Customers come to us with an application or a challenge, and if we don’t have the exact tool they need, we will often design brand new tools and systems for them. We’ll consult with our global network of partners, conduct trials at the customers’ site, and we won’t stop until the solution is found.” The company’s Product Manager, Brad Anderson, has worked very closely with a particular customer for over 18 months, seeking to bring about improvements in technology to reflect the way manufacturing is evolving around the world.

removes monotonous, repetitive tasks from the picture, so workers can be reassigned to more meaningful tasks.”

“With this customer, a staircase manufacturer, we’ve put a number of profiles in place for their stair treads, most notably, an R3 pencil round profile. As a result, they’ve been able to shave forty minutes per set of stairs off their production time, which is a huge achievement, considering their high output. But apart from the time savings, we’ve also brought outstanding consistency and repeatability to their product by introducing a CNC to profile their treads.” Panel Tools turned to cutting tools manufacturer, Freud and their ISOprofil technology, a diameter and profile recovery knife system. It features resharpen able knives and allows a constant diameter and profile to be maintained, which is unique to a cutterhead. “ISOprofil provides the benefit of a turnover knife-style system, but with the economy of a knife that can be sharpened multiple times,” Brad explains.“The knives can be sharpened 6-8 times in their lifespan. We find that the initial cost of the knives is not much more than that of a standard turnover knife, yet they come with many more benefits.” The ISOprofil system saves setup time for the customer and reduces the skills needed due to the diameter and profile recovery. “When you go from a manual labourintensive task to a CNC-automated process,” Brad says, “the repeatability greatly exceeds expectation. You achieve the exact same profile and finish every single time. It also

Supplier October/November 2023

The ISOprofil solution came about when Brad visited one of the company’s factories and noticed a team of five workers with hand trimmers applying radii. In arriving at the answer, some challenges had to be overcome, such as the need for adjustability to suit the various tread thicknesses. While at the LIGNA show, Brad was able to bring the owner of the stair manufacturing business to the Freud stand and show him the cutterhead and some samples.“He was so impressed with the finish and return that he’d get out of it that he ordered three cutterheads right there and then for one of their factories.” Panel Tools offers 30-minute personalised phone consultations to discuss a customer’s specific needs. As Fraser explains, “The purpose of the session is not to talk about pricing, it’s really a brainstorming, problemsolving consultation that focuses on one particular aspect of the customer’s business.” The customer provides information in the booking process which Panel Tools uses to prepare for the call.“We might even email them with more questions, so we have a fuller picture before we speak. After the session, we put in place a roadmap and work our way through the different priorities. Ultimately, we devise a highly personalised solution that is guaranteed to deliver benefits, whether it’s cost savings, better finishes, more efficient output, or whatever else they need to achieve.” Book your 30-minute consultation with Panel Tools now. web www.paneltools.com.au ❚

The Taglio Scanner: Elevating Australian Stone Masonry

I

n stone masonry, achieving precision is paramount. Australian stonemasons continually seek innovative tools to enhance accuracy and efficiency, especially when working with materials like sintered stone, porcelain, engineered stone, and natural stone. The Taglio Scanner, exclusively supplied by CDK Stone in Australia, has become a prominent tool in this pursuit. The Taglio Scanner has reshaped how stone surfaces are digitised. Its advanced LED lighting system captures the intricate details of every stone type. “At CDK Stone, we aim to empower stonemasons with technology that elevates their work. The Taglio Scanner is pivotal in achieving that. It is engineered to work seamlessly across all stone types, ensuring stonemasons can deliver outstanding results without expanding their teams or overextending their resources," said James Clark, General Manager, Business Development - Tooling and Equipment. Using its SlabVision technology, the Taglio Scanner creates digital replicas impervious to fluctuating lighting conditions, ensuring every detail is captured. This scanner revolutionises the assessment and measurement of slabs, promoting accuracy, particularly for high-value materials and guaranteeing each cut maximises the potential of each slab, thereby reducing waste.

Mistakes and risks are substantially minimised with the SeKON software's Vein Matching module, which can utilise the high-resolution images from the Taglio Scanner. Final production designs can be visualised in a 3D format, making it easier for designers and end customers to view. This not only ensures accurate cuts but also guarantees that the final vein-matched solution aligns with customer expectations.

Furthermore, CDK Stone's vein matching technology integrates seamlessly with the broader SeKON software, which offers comprehensive support for the stone fabrication process. This integration proves beneficial for all, from smaller stonemason operations to larger fabricators, given the wide compatibility of SeKON with different stone machinery and production facilities.

Jonathan Height of CDK Stone elaborates on the transformation of vein matching: "Vein matching used to be a long and arduous process. However, new software developments with CDK Stone’s Vein Matching module under the SeKON software, combined with digital scanning,

Supplier October/November 2023

have streamlined the process." Thanks to the Taglio Scanner's accurate imaging, the software achieves a seamless matching execution without the risks associated with manual slab selection.

The arrival of the Taglio Scanner supplied by CDK Stone represents a monumental stride for stonemasons in Australia. With this tool, they can elevate their craftsmanship across various stone materials while adhering to the traditions of precision and quality inherent in the trade. web www.cdkstone.com.au ❚

Stream Edge Pro: The new innovative HFS Hydrogen Force System

U

nique quality and high productivity for batch one flexible production ensuring energy and CO2 footprint saving. Biesse introduces a real game changer thanks to an innovative system for perfect bonding. The Stream Edge Pro is the new single sided and flexible squaring edgebanding machine that is able to perfectly square panels dimensionally different between each other. This is the perfect solution to ensure a high level of flexibility and productivity. The Stream Edge Pro grants improved performance and allows users to process a large number of parts per shift, matching all customer needs.

Zero mistakes: fully automated solution to reduce operators and to avoid manual loading errors.

The Stream Edge Pro is able to square panels that differ from each other in size, colour, and edge and is particularly suitable for medium and large-sized companies that are looking for flexibility, quality, and productivity. Easy to use, as it offers multiple functions to facilitate daily production, it does not require authorised operators, and in the case of different edge types to be handled, long setup times are not required for thickness and colour changes.

The innovative and patented Biesse HFS Hydrogen Force System ensures a perfect edge bonding without the use of glue.

Water power: everything starts with the simplest element, water.

The activation energy of the functional layer is made by hydrogen produced from water. The system uses the hydrolysis process to create hydrogen, which is used as a sustainable energy source needed to power the edge application process, thus ensuring perfect quality.

The type of edges that are used are the same type that are also used for laser and hot air (Biesse's patented AFS Air Force System), clearly the source of energy with which it applies it is quite different, here it starts from water.

Certified and sustainable system Thanks to HFS Hydrogen Force System technology, Stream Edge Pro can edge up to 1.5 km panels with one litre of water, saving up to -70% energy. (Compared to other glue less technology). Biesse always offer the HFS solution in addition to the more traditional glue technology, thus leaving maximum flexibility 24 to the end user.

The Stream Edge Pro advantage Flexibility: matching a high variable production mix including colours, size, and edge technology change panel by panel. The Stream Edge Pro can be configured with different working units and a different level of automation, in order to match different needs in productivity and product mix.

Precision and Safety Stone masonry with laser templating and handling tools. The stone masonry industry is experiencing a significant shift with the introduction of advanced tools that enhance measurement accuracy and improve the safety of stone transportation. The LT-2D3D Laser Templator is leading this shift, offering a high level of measurement precision that significantly reduces the reliance on manual templating materials and the need for on-site cutting adjustments. Utilising the LT-2D3D Laser Templator, stone masons can achieve precise measurements of intricate projects, such as custom benchtops or uniquely shaped stone features. The impact of such precise measurements is clear: it streamlines the installation process. The LT-2D3D ensures that the digital data for stone pieces is accurate, allowing fabricators to cut once, confident that additional adjustments are unlikely.

This level of reliability in the measurements alleviates much of the time-intensive and laborious task of reworking materials at the job site, leading to a more straightforward installation process.

The practical benefits extend beyond the workshop. By reducing the requirement for on-site cutting, stone masons mitigate the amount of heavy equipment needed at the installation site, which inherently makes for a safer work environment. The absence of cutting tools reduces the risk associated with manual cutting and creates a cleaner job site. Parallel to the LT-2D3D's introduction, products from Omni Cubed are ensuring that once the stone is cut, it is transported with the utmost care. Handling systems like the Aqua Carry Clamp, Pro Cart and Pro-Dolly HD2 are specifically designed to secure stone materials, carry high-load weights and accommodate intricate cut-outs. The Pro-Dolly HD2, for example, is adept at transporting hefty benchtops, while the Sink Hole Saver Edge protects vulnerable areas around cutouts from incurring damage during transit.

adjustments. The reduction of on-site cuts translates into a more efficient installation, saving time and resources.

By reducing the requirement for onsite cutting, stone masons mitigate the amount of heavy equipment needed at the installation site, which inherently makes for a safer work environment.

These handling and transportation tools complement the precision of the LT-2D3D Laser Templator. When a stone is cut and finished in the workshop, these handling systems ensure that it arrives on-site ready for installation without the need for further

in the past. This technological synergy enhances the workflow, allowing for a focus on what stone masons care about most: delivering high-quality work with professionalism and craftsmanship. It's not about a fundamental transformation but an evolution in practice — one that introduces a notable improvement in the efficiency and outcome of stone masonry projects. z

The combination of accurate laser templating and specialised handling equipment represents an important advancement in the stone masonry field. Stone masons are now equipped to deliver their projects with an assurance of fit and safety that was more challenging to achieve

Sealers Guide

Bright as can be with Spirit Sealers

A

s the colder months of the year fall upon us, we tend to do less entertaining outdoors, spending more time in the warmth indoors. Consequently, we are cleaning less outdoors, and by the end of winter it shows. Our outdoor natural stone, tile, and concrete areas can become almost unrecognisable during this time of year, accumulating a build-up of algae, mould and mildew, leaf marks, tannin stains and general wear.

with a unique blend of surfactants, designed to remove organic stains such as algae, mould, mildew, leaf marks, bird/bat droppings, leeching timber stains, stubborn black lichen and more.

Spirit Bright As is the cleaner for the job.

Bright As can also be used periodically over sealed surfaces without destroying the sealer.

Porous surfaces such as natural stone and concrete pavers can and should be sealed with a high- performance penetrating sealer such as Spirit Premium Seal. Non-porous surfaces such as glazed porcelain tiles can’t be sealed, however they can still also benefit from cleaning with Bright As when affected by any of the stains listed above.

Bright As can be used at any time of the year, both indoors and outdoors. It is used to great effect when employed as a Spring cleaner, rejuvenating your outdoor living space ready for the Summer.

There are other harsh chemicals that are often used to remove mould and mildew that will drastically shorten the lifespan of a sealer and may even damage your substrate. Bright As has been specially formulated for the stone and tile industry. Use of highpressure cleaners is another way both the sealer and substrate can be damaged. Bright As is safe to use over any natural stone, man-made tile, or concrete surface. As is required in Spirit’s cleaning, sealing and maintenance manuals, we never fail to rinse with Spirit Neutral Cleaner after cleaning with any of the heavier duty cleaners in the range such as Bright As. Spirit Sealers and Cleaners produce a complete range of sealers and cleaners that have been carefully formulated for the stone and tile industry. Visit www.spiritsealers. com to view the full range, or contact sales@ spiritsealers.com for more information. z

Outdoor areas exposed to the elements will still suffer during the cooler periods regardless of being sealed, however, sealing will prevent deep staining and make these surfaces much easier to clean. Choosing the right cleaner is extremely important when it comes to effective cleaning. If we consider a stain to be a lock, then we need the right key/cleaner to unlock that stain. Using the wrong cleaner at the very least will be ineffective, and at the worst, it may do lasting damage to the surface you are cleaning. Bright As is an extremely effective cleaner

Three new CMS machines At the CMS stand, three new machines displayed their prowess. The Kratos, Kartesia, and Electa, to be exact. The CMS Electa

The Electa, an ultra-compact Stone machine, is perfect for those who have limited floor space, yet need maximum impact. “It’s the new compact CNC from CMS – it’s really great because it has a small footprint. So, from an installation point of view it takes up less space – and we all know that factory space is a premium, especially in Australia. It's 6.1m wide by 3.4m depth – it’s really great. The reason for this is we have a working area of 3.5m by 1.75m, so you’ve still got the ability to polish really large island benches, even on the exterior.

Of course, you can do undermounts, drilling, and any other milling work as well,” comments Dominik.” The Electa also comes with side tool changes with up to 26 positions. The tool changes come from the side of the machine – delivering a very quick and efficient tool change with no manual action required. The machine also comes with a revolutionary new cross-laser system for positioning vacuum cups, new to CMS. The benefit? Cups positioned and ready to go in minutes. The CMS Brembana Kartesia

Exhibited last year as a concept, the Kartesia made it to Marmomac 2023 for good. 38

Glossforce 3.0 from Marmoelettromeccanica In 1999, Marmoelettromeccanica introduced polishing tools with a rubber/ resin bond to the world. Traditionally the rubber was bonded directly to the metal core, but to achieve good adhesion, the crosssection had a zig-zag shape. The trouble is this creates an uneven surface on the piece being polished.

Rather than placing suction cups on the working table, the Kartesia has its suction cups on rails. The array of suction cups move independently and automatically to what has been programmed, cutting down on manual set-up time. Through the CAD/ CAM interface, the operator has the clear dimensions of the piece and ‘places’ the suction cups according to what is required. This significantly cuts down the set-up time, compared to traditional CNC machines. Perfect for integrating into an automated line - and minimising operator involvement. “If you combine this with a robotic loading/ unloading arm, you basically have a machine running by itself, taking a lot of the manual work out of the factory. We’re pretty excited to get it to customers," says Dominik.

With a blade side of up to 800mm, drilling tool on the side of the blade and a lateral second spindle for milling work, you can have access to three tools at any given time. Like all CMS machines, this machine also comes with an automatic redressing station, automatic presetter and integrated camera for acquisition of the slab to be cut. Another improvement is its long-life carpet under the working table instead of traditional rubber. On the software side, the CNC interface has received a new design, now incorporating a long list of macros and parametric programs that allow fast operation with minimal CAD/ CAM training or knowledge.

Glossforce 3.0, by contrast, is a multilayer tool. The core structure is metal, followed by a black hybrid material, designed to help rubber securely stick without warping. A 3mm diamond coating tops it all off. That is a much thicker coating than industry standard 0.5mm or 1mm, extending the tools’ lifetime. “It’s a game-changer for CNC polishing tools,” says Dominik. Glossforce 3.0, like the Kartesia, Elekta, and Kratos, is exclusive to Innovync across Australia and New Zealand. Get in touch for details. web www.innovync.com.au z

The CMS Brembana Kratos

This new open-frame bridge saw comes with an extra side spindle, letting you work with three tools at the same time. Ultra-customisable, the Kratos can be had as a standalone machine, as a belt line, automatic pallet changer or even twin table. Paired with its exceptional vacuum manipulator, fragile slabs are easily loaded and positioned for machining. "It's a new kind of beast, as we like to say," remarks Dominik.

Industry 5.0 Are We There Yet? Article by Philip Ashley AI (Artificial Intelligence) is expected to have a major impact on manufacturing, including woodworking industries, and the way AI is accelerating, that impact may be sooner than we think. A number of leading suppliers to the woodworking trades are already using AI to improve their product performance. Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to the development of computer systems that can perform tasks that typically require human intelligence. AI covers a range of systems, including machine learning, the ability to support and manipulate speech, analysing and understanding digital images, and robotics. AI technologies are increasingly being used to interpret complex data. AI algorithms can extract valuable insights and actionable information from data produced by computer controlled manufacturing equipment. To get an insight into AI and what the future might hold for the woodworking industries we spoke with Biesse Chief Information and Technology officer, Konstantin Kostenarov at the recent Ligna Fair in Hannover,

Germany. Konstantin has a Doctor's Degree in IT Engineering and was previously Chief Technology Officer for Ducati Motor with 18 Years experience in Innovation Management, Processes optimization and Performance management. Raphaël Prati, Biesse Chief Marketing & Communications Officer; and Alberto Tuberti, Biesse Product Management Director were also on hand to assist us in understanding where the industry and particularly Biesse is heading.

The Next Stage? Most of us were aware of the industrial revolution, and when Industry 4.0 arrived via a high-tech strategy program of the German government in 2011, most of us probably wondered where industries two (electricity) and three (computerisation and automation) went. So, what do we make of artificial intelligence? If all the hype is to be believed, AI will transform manufacturing and could become industry 5.0 No one we spoke to in Germany denied AI could be the next industrial revolution, although it is yet to be universally designated as such. It was many years after the steam engine was invented that the first industrial revolution was recognised.

Above: The impact of AI on manufacturing is accelerating. Image credit - Pexels As to whether or not we are there yet, Raphaël said, “Technology usually comes from the military or aviation sectors. The trick is to take that advantage and apply it to a completely different context. To have that application into the woodworking industry is a challenge because we have to use the same creativity they used at the beginning with Industry 4.0 and from what we can see, we don’t think that trick has already been made. It’s difficult to transfer the practical benefit of something that is highly theoretic or difficult to explain and this is one reason why no one is really talking about industrial AI yet.” Konstantin added, “We are already applying data analytics in marketing and have just started looking to apply AI in manufacturing. AI will be able to connect the dots outside of our environment. In the automotive industry for example, analysing which would be the winning colour strategy for a specific model in a specific country, providing information to modify in near-real time the production process and provide insights for the forecasting, the supply chain to be more flexible and distribute this information throughout the company. At the moment the woodworking supply industry is mostly reactive. Anticipating the customer’s needs will be the next stage.”

current platform and create a New Global Industrial Dataspace of Biesse to give real time information to our customers and our internal staff. While we already have predictive capabilities through sensors on our machines, A.I. will be able to add information from the behaviours and the habits of the customer’s processes.”

Alberto Tuberti explained, “A.I. will minimise our inefficiencies in understanding the data we have and help us get new technologies to the market in a much shorter time.” Konstantin went on, “We already have a huge amount of data. We already have our IoT connected platform, but this was designed seven or eight years ago and was not based on this new aspect of predictive intelligence. We started from the analysis of the current datasets to understand how to re-design our

Raphaël Prati explained Biesse commitment to their customers, “We are not thinking about what is going to be available tomorrow. Imagination is a very important word; we are imagining what is going to be the business in ten years’ time. If we really want to be ready then, we have to start now. It’s not about finding something for tomorrow, it’s having a long term perspective. Linked to this is emotion; AI can simulate emotion but it’s not going to be authentic. That emotion is going to keep the processes under control. AI is going to simplify what we don’t want to do anymore but it’s not going to replace the emotion and that’s what we need to leverage to keep control, and that’s the trick.”

Other Suppliers Andreas Hettich (Hettich furniture hardware) told us “AI, it’s all or it’s nothing”, 42 a term often used to mean that unless

42

Manufacturing

something is done completely, it is not acceptable. Andreas went on to say that AI would certainly speed up their hardware development but doubted it would replace designers. At Homag Group’s new technology exhibit, it was clear that AI will be used in part to check the quality of the saw cut on their panel saws; analyse and measure panels for stress cuts; and monitor energy consumption, one of the highest manufacturing costs. And at Altendorf Group, AI datasets of workers hands are used to identify if a worker is about to put their hand in a dangerous area of their machine fitted with new ‘Hand Guard’ safety system. Jean Philippe Hildebrand is a software expert with Luxscan. They work with the Weinig Group to develop scanning technologies for the timber industry. Jean told us that they have developed a technology that scans the end of a board they say is much like a fingerprint for wood. That board can then be tracked through the factory using this fingerprint. Jean told us about half a million defects scanned so far that can be used to identify unwanted features that can be cut from the timber at 250 parts per minute. One such installation has already been shipped to Australia.

Data, Data, Data The manufacturing industry will benefit significantly from AI. The World Economic Forum predicts a 9% increase over a five year period to 2027. With more data, companies can apply AI to reduce job times, increase accuracy, and perform administrative tasks. “By automating the interpretation of data, AI reduces human error and improves

the efficiency of data analysis processes. AI-powered systems can uncover patterns, relationships, and anomalies in data that might not be easily discernible by human analysts” (Institute of Data). Raphaël adds, “AI could be a bigger leap than industry one through four combined. People don’t fully understand it and that is why we must keep the emotion in, so we can control it.” A trending buzzword is machine learning, or ML. A subfield of AI, ML is a process by which systems can automatically learn, gaining information from patterns and structures so that they can self-improve, sometimes even without human supervision. The Australian furniture and cabinet industry is well advanced in its production processes with a majority of companies employing some kind of CNC machinery and design software. Already, computers and machines do most of the processing and AI is set to benefit industry in a way we are yet to fully comprehend, and yet we still understand will be a huge leap forward for everyone concerned. z

Artedomus x Spiggy

A

rtedomus, a name synonymous with premium stone, tiles, architectural surfaces, bathware and furniture, has now expanded its offering to include architectural hardware. A new partnership with Brisbane based artisanal hardware brand Spiggy will allow designers and homeowners to choose one-ofa-kind handles for kitchens, bathrooms, living spaces and more that complement Artedomus’ surfaces and furniture, all under one roof. Spiggy was founded by designer Colin Wright in 2020, filling a gap in the local market for unique, expertly crafted and authentically designed hardware. Wright sources his exclusive pieces from around the world, with the majority designed by renowned international architects and designers. A broad range of styles, from sleek and minimalist to intricate and highly decorative, allows the collection to cater to a diverse range of architectural aesthetics.

“This partnership felt very organic as Artedomus and Spiggy share similar values – we both look for unique, beautifully made products with a story to tell, carefully sourced from boutique brands across the globe.

“Before launching Spiggy, Colin worked at Artedomus for many years, where he was a key part of our team, so we’re delighted to be working together again,” says Phil Brenton, Managing Director at Artedomus.

“It’s been a joy to watch Spiggy grow over the last few years, and we’re pleased to be part of the next stage of the company’s growth. Given Artedomus’ extensive network and experience, we hope to bring this fantastic hardware range to more designers and homeowners who are looking for something a little bit special for their home or commercial space,” he says.

Supplier October/November 2023

Wright is equally excited about the new partnership. “I’m absolutely thrilled to partner with Artedomus,” he says. “I have so much respect for the people, their passion for their products, and the way the business is run. My intention for Spiggy was always to do for hardware what Artedomus has done for tiles, so I really couldn’t have wished for a better alignment. We attract the same type of client, and there’s a natural synergy between the type of products we look for, and the way we approach both business and our relationships with our suppliers.”

Spiggy hardware can currently be seen in their Brisbane showroom and will be on display in the Artedomus Sydney showroom at the end of 2023, and in Melbourne in 2024. z
