Funding support for ResiLoop

F

ifteen leading suppliers of resilient floorcoverings to the local market have committed to provide funding support for ResiLoop, Australia’s first national stewardship scheme for resilient flooring. ResiLoop is a new product stewardship scheme focused on recycling research and development to address the challenges presented by past, current and future consumption of resilient floorcoverings in Australia. With funding from the Australian Government, ResiLoop was initiated by the Australian Resilient Flooring Association (ARFA) in 2022 and a proposed approach released in May 2023 to start addressing the 60,000 tonnes of flooring waste generated annually from installation and end of use. Resilient floorcoverings such as sheet vinyl, linoleum or rubber, Luxury Vinyl Tiles and hybrid tiles, are durable products with use lifespans of 30 years or so. The market for these products has grown significantly over the past decade, largely through imports.

“ResiLoop is now in the transition phase, where it moves from being an industry proposed concept to a live scheme.”

Above: ARFA President, Dan Lovell

Over the next six months, current remanufacturing trials will be continued and new, potential end applications for the recyclates will be explored with interested parties. The governance arrangements for Resiloop Limited will also be planned in consultation with Founding Members.

ARFA President, Dan Lovell said “We are pleased to announce that all of ARFA’s members, representing 60 per cent of market sales nationally, have agreed to provide financial contributions proportionate to their sales to support this ongoing work.” “We really appreciate the commitment from these companies, the willingness to step up and make this investment to help drive a circular future for floorcoverings in Australia. These companies become the Founding Members of ResiLoop Limited, the product stewardship organisation which will manage the scheme.”

With a target start date of late 2024, key to implementing the scheme is confirming local end markets for the recyclate. ARFA sought industry investment to continue ResiLoop’s research and manufacturing trials and to begin the preparation for scheme start-up.

“None of this would be possible without the ongoing support of the Australian Government and the commitment of product suppliers to work collaboratively towards a solution,” Chris said. “Together, it gives us an opportunity to explore all potential avenues for recycling these materials in Australia.” “If others in the market are interested in getting involved, they’re welcome to contact us.”

ResiLoop Limited has now been incorporated as a not-for-profit product stewardship organisation. As the inaugural chair of the organisation, Chris Barker, Managing Director of Forbo Floorcoverings explained, the next steps of the scheme citing the support of industry the key to success.

Best Environmental Practice PVC Strengthened

T

he Vinyl Council of Australia’s (VCA) updated ‘Best Environmental Practice PVC (BEP) v2.0 Guidelines’ represent a strong step forward for the scheme, with additional guidelines reflecting an expansion in best practice standards, including better addressing the environmental impacts of products and materials at end-of-life. Companies in the vinyl flooring industry are encouraged to communicate their commitment to best practice and environmental sustainability in the manufacturing and end-of-life management of their flooring products to procurers, specifiers, and final consumers, by undergoing BEP 2.0 certification and licensing.

The updated guidelines retain the stringent best practice criteria and guidelines for manufacturing PVC contained in the original version, first launched in 2010, whilst also including four additional mandatory guidelines and six optional credits. The scheme now includes 22 guidelines across five key themes – Supply Chain Management, Best Environmental Practice Manufacture of PVC Resin, Environmental Management, Safe & Sustainable Use of Additives, and Resource Efficiency & Material Circularity. “The BEP 2.0 Guidelines represents a significant step by the PVC industry in ensuring that the Best Environmental Practice PVC scheme continues to reflect ongoing best practice in PVC manufacturing,” said VCA CEO Jim Coulston.

Gain recognition for contributing to the circular economy Receive reputable, third-party authentication of recycled PVC use Fight greenwashing For more information, visit vinyl.org.au/vinylcycle

Under the updated BEP 2.0 scheme, PVC products that are independently verified as having met all core and mandatory guidelines and at least one optional credit are eligible to be issued with the Best Environmental Practice PVC Licence Mark by the VCA, which ensures that all verified products are included within the VCA’s BEP Product Register and Green Building Council of Australia’s (GBCA) Responsible Products Framework.

It’s all about the installation system

G

reat quality, easy installation, waterproof properties and of course, long-lasting results that require minimal maintenance. These are qualities that are important to consumers when choosing a new floor. What many people are not aware of is how much the installation system affect both floor performance and the installation experience. To learn more, we spoke to the floor locking experts at Välinge Innovation. “Choosing the right installation system is crucial to get high-performing products that perfectly fit the needs and wants of modern customers,” says Andreas Engström, Key Account Manager at Välinge Innovation.“It makes a big difference to how well a product performs and how consumers experience it.” There is a lot of focus on floors with waterproof properties and going forward it looks like it will become the new standard, regardless of whether you prefer wood, laminate, or resilient flooring. At Swedish Välinge Innovation they are well-known for their floor locking expertise and their 5G Fold Down installation system is known globally to be the fastest, easiest, and most reliable installation system available. With

5G Dry you get the same high-performing locking system but with a leakproof joint. “We developed 5G Dry to meet the market’s high demands for user-friendly installation and results that are both worry-free and long-lasting”, explains Andreas Engström.“It’s a completely watertight installation system that is perfectly suitable for all types of flooring.”

Above: Used on flooring with a water-

resistant surface, 5G Dry enhances the waterproof qualities and makes the floor last longer.

Above: The uniquely designed 5G Dry joint efficiently prevents liquids from penetrating through the seams of the floor panels. With a leakproof installation system you minimise the risk of liquids seeping through the seams of the floor panels and damaging the boards or, even worse, the subfloor. If it’s a wooden or wood-based floor, leaking seams can cause surface swelling and harm the panels, so they need to be replaced.

Above: Bjelin’s new range of Hardened Wood floors features Välinge’s 5G Dry installation system to make them even more durable.

Flooring December 2023/January 2024

To prevent these problems and make floors that last longer, you need a watertight installation system. Välinge’s 5G Dry technology is one of the most advanced on the market and the leakproof joint successfully blocks all liquids from seeping through the seams of the floor. Moreover, this high-level of waterproofness is achieved without needing to add coating or chemicals, neither in production nor on the finished product. Andreas Engström continues to explain that choosing a premium quality installation system is crucial to achieving high customer satisfaction. Reviews from other customers are increasingly important in the decisionmaking process, therefore it is important to know that most negative reviews and feedback from dissatisfied customers are based on the installation experience and not the product itself. This is why choosing the right installation system for your products is of utmost value. “With over 30 years in the industry, we know flooring and more specifically floor locking systems, and we can assure you that choosing a high-performance installation system makes a big difference, both to the installation experience and to improving quality and durability of the floor”, Andreas Engström concludes. s

These machines are packed with features that perform in executing tough sanding jobs. The SV25 slow-speed sander is powered with 1.1 kw, 4 pole motor and 188 rpm pad speed. The SV30 high-speed sander has a 1.5 kw, 2 pole motor and 364 rpm pad speed. The high-speed sander can be used as a polisher too, simply by attaching a polishing pad to the pad holder. And now, Polivac introduces the secondgeneration SV25 and SV30 machines, to compliment the established models. The second-generation models boast an innovative Triple-Planetary HD Helical cut gearbox for extra strength and provide even quieter operation. The second-generation sanders are about 8kg heavier than standard Polivac sanders, creating more downward pressure, enabling users to achieve high efficiency and effectiveness at the job with the same Polivac quality and reliability. 12 ForestOne

F

orest One is one of Australia’s largest independent distributors of plywood, timber, laminate and decorative surface materials for sustainable interior design. The team at Flooring Magazine recently sat down with Darryl Ball, Group Decorative and Specification Manager, to discuss all things business.

What is the ForestOne story? ForestOne is Australia's largest independent distributor of plywood, timber, laminate and decorative surface materials for sustainable interior design. We're an Australian-owned company with a strong focus on providing ethically sourced building products that enable architects and designers to 'Specify Responsibly'. Since our inception under the Gunnersen brand more than 140 years ago, we've been a major player in the building industry, providing excellent service, and supplying materials for building and interior design. ForestOne was rebranded in 2019 with a clear vision to empower architects and designers to specify more responsibly. We're immensely proud of our history and now even more excited about our future direction, enabling architects and designers to build a sustainable future. Our mission is to source and

supply best-in-class materials that empower specifiers to achieve their sustainability goals.

How has the business changed and evolved over the years? When the business was previously Gunnersens prior to July 2019 we still had a focus on sourcing products that had been through a stringent due diligence process before considering any product prior to purchase. This included product sourcing from reputable suppliers, slave labour practices and all things ESG. Four years on as ForestOne that philosophy is no different, however, what we do in our own business has changed significantly. When we talk about ‘Specified Responsibly’ that doesn’t just mean the brands and products that we are distributing but indeed our own practices as a business. Every single employee understands our need to minimise our impact on the environment and to ‘walk the walk;’ when it comes to sustainable practices. In addition to that, as of the 20th of November 2023, ForestOne is not only an independent distributor of plywood, timber, laminate and decorative surface materials but is now also a manufacturer of raw particleboard, flooring and melamine laminated products.

What is the ForestOne philosophy and or mission statement? Specifying Responsibly is an ethical choice. By making responsible product choices, designers and architects help to progress sustainable building culture and shape an industry that protects our environment and our communities for generations to come. While we often focus on aesthetics, performance, and cost when designing and constructing buildings, beautiful designs do not need to come at a cost to the earth. We have a strong focus on providing products to allow architects and designers to Specify Responsibly. Put simply, we want our customers, both specification and trade, to take comfort in knowing that a ForestOne product selection equates to a truly responsible choice. ForestOne supports architects and designers to make responsible choices and Specify Responsibly. What does this mean? A sustainable building is the outcome of responsible material specification, which aligns the efficient use of resources with

Flooring December 2023/January 2024

Focus On overarching aims to reduce a building’s impact on the environment during its lifecycle. Through responsible material selection, specifiers can minimise environmental impacts by reducing reliance on natural resources, using reclaimed and recyclable materials, avoiding materials with high embodied emissions, or by simply creating less waste. Responsible specification also means the avoidance of materials that may have been produced through unethical practices, or otherwise pose a threat to human health and well-being. Specifying Responsibly means architects, designers and project specifiers can reduce the environmental impact of building through careful material selection. They can also make informed decisions that contribute to the health and well-being of all stakeholders in the supply chain. As ForestOne is the largest independent distributor of wood panels, timber and decorative surface products in Australia, we have a strong focus on providing products to allow architects and designers to Specify Responsibly. Alongside its sustainable building products, ForestOne is undertaking a range of initiatives to be more responsible in the way it operates its business. Seen in the execution of environmentally mindful practices, such as using hybrid cars and delivery trucks, LED lighting, solar panels and even 100% recyclable packaging for our products.

13 products within the decorative range include MEGANITE Acrylic Solid Surface, InForm laminates and our very own Australian made decorative particleboard colours plus a wide range of other decorative surfaces.

What is the product offering at ForestOne? Describe your current collections and the brands you carry. ForestOne has become one of the trusted suppliers to the market with a one-stop solution. This is the foundation of why our products and brands are so popular. We have numerous products in our portfolio, but there are three main areas that we sell to the market: • Plywood, which is used in many applications both decorative and structural applications. ForestOne is Australia’s largest importer of Plywoods in Australia, something we are extremely proud of. With one of the largest offers in both local and globally manufactured options, we have been able to give multiple choices for the market.

• Our decorative products are headlined by the world class EGGER brand of products. With technology of the highest calibre combined with incredible best in class environmental credentials there is no wonder it is increasing in popularity. Included in the EGGER range is the commercial quality GreenTec Flooring range. With unrivalled performance it fits beautifully amongst the ForestOne portfolio of quality products. Other

Flooring December 2023/January 2024

• Finally with all great suppliers you only become a one-stop-shop by offering all the other necessary building products. ForestOne boasts a wide range of timber and panel products that complement the other two categories in the range. This includes raw board, exterior and interior paintable panels, carcass materials and other building essentials.

Looking ahead, what plans have you got for the future of ForestOne? The future for ForestOne just became a whole lot bigger and more exciting with the acquisition of the D&R Henderson business in November 2023. This now gives ForestOne the opportunity to vertically integrate and supply some products to the market that we now can produce. This includes a range of timber and particleboard products. The exciting part with the acquisition is that, not only can we supply the decorative market with a range of products with incredibly high recycled content (up to 66% on some products), but we now have the ability to recycle products into our own production at the end of its life. This provides an exceptional product end of life solution that our customers have been looking for. It really fits in with our Specify Responsibly mandate and holds us in good stead for the future. web www.forest.one s

Experience the Difference Article by Philip Ashley Your business is your livelihood; it’s a significant investment. If it’s worth something to you, then it’s worth insuring. Insurance covers your business for unexpected events and helps minimise financial losses if something goes wrong. The right broker can tailor your cover to meet the specific needs of your unique business. Albert Einstein once said,“The only source of knowledge is experience.” Ian Jones insurance was founded back in March 1987 and specialises in your flooring industry. Ian Jones actively examines flooring industry data and trends, something not many brokers over any industry does. They know your business and fully understand the daily issues you face. Anyone can sell insurance, but being able to provide cover that meets your specific needs is an additional service few offer. Ian started the business from scratch at age 21. Ian had just finished an electrical apprenticeship and was looking for new opportunities. Typically, back then it was

relatively easy to enter the insurance industry, so he took on a position with Capita Financial Group. Learning very quickly that his income was based on commission, and you were essentially working for yourself, he started literally knocking on doors and making cold calls to businesses asking if he could help them with their insurances. FloorInsure was established because Ian’s brother has always been retailing in carpet and flooring. Ian Jones Insurance’s market is primarily in carpet and flooring retailers across Australia and that was how it started. Ian decided not to stop there and so, started to market FloorInsure to the 1000’s of flooring contractors, flooring products suppliers, importers, distribution and logistics, specialized flooring for health, acoustic flooring, food and kitchen, flooring inspectors and just about any business who has a role in flooring. They are also the partner brokers for the Australasian Timber Flooring Association (ATFA). 37 years later the business has grown organically with most clients coming from referrals. One thing that has changed is that Ian is less involved directly with clients on an ongoing basis. He is proud to say,“I have tremendous staff who look after everything, but I am still constantly involved in ensuring that very strict service standards are adhered to. My main role now is to create business and our Flooring Industry Program, FloorInsure, is a prime example of that.” Ian also has programs for Newsagencies, wine industry Grape Crop insurance, and has developed a strong reputation for difficult and hard to place insurances for risks that other brokers can’t place.

Our vast experience gives us tremendous knowledge of the sector and our brokers are constantly researching information relating to the industry to ensure that we truly understand what the various sub sections of the flooring industry are and do. A prime example of this is the current construction market and how the trend in bankruptcy affects our clients exposure to losses and how we can help protect our clients business against loss. We breakdown the individual flooring business and provide advice on all insurance solutions. That may often mean questioning some of the previous advice given by any competition. We feel very, very confident in doing so because of our 20+ years advising the flooring industry on all aspects of insurance and our intimate knowledge of the sector”. 16 Sustainable Evolution

Feature

Article by Andy Martin, CIAL

Navigating challenges and opportunities in Australia's fashionable carpet industry The Australian carpet industry is in the midst of a transformative phase, steering towards sustainability while facing challenges from alternative flooring options. This evolution is marked by three key areas: competition and alternatives, shifting consumer preferences, and remarkable strides in material innovation. Upholding Sustainability Amidst Choices Sustainability has become the linchpin in this competitive landscape. Carpets are increasingly being reimagined as eco-friendly solutions. Manufacturers are deploying recycled materials, such as reclaimed fibres or plant-based elements, to create sustainable carpeting options. Integrating sustainability into their core offerings, the industry aims to bridge the gap and counter the allure of alternative materials. A Call for Sustainable Solutions Consumer preferences are undergoing a noteworthy shift, with sustainability becoming a defining factor in purchasing decisions. Today's consumers are more environmentally conscious, seeking products that align with their values of reducing ecological footprints. In the flooring realm, this translates to a surge in demand for sustainable carpets. Designs and patterns in the carpet industry are evolving to cater to these changing preferences. Natural hues, organic patterns, and innovative textures are gaining traction. Manufacturers are embracing these preferences by producing carpets made from recycled materials or natural fibres, offering

a blend of aesthetics and sustainability that resonates with consumers. Advancements in eco-friendly materials are reshaping the landscape of carpet manufacturing. Companies are investing in research and development, focusing on materials derived from renewable sources and recycling techniques. Innovative solutions encompass recycled polyester, bio-based polymers, and even upcycled materials, providing sustainable alternatives without compromising quality or performance. These materials not only reduce environmental impact but also offer improved stain resistance, durability, and comfort, meeting consumer expectations for both sustainability and functionality.

Carpet is a Fashion Statement Carpeting isn't just a flooring choice; it's a fashion statement that transforms the ambiance of homes and offices alike. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, carpets offer an array of functional benefits that elevate spaces to new levels of comfort and style. Carpets come in an assortment of colours, textures, and patterns, serving as an artistic canvas to reflect personal tastes or corporate branding. From luxurious plush textures to sophisticated patterns, carpets effortlessly complement various interior designs, becoming a defining element of the space's visual appeal.

17

One of the remarkable qualities of carpets is their ability to provide thermal insulation. They act as natural insulators, retaining warmth in colder seasons, fostering a cozy environment that encourages relaxation and comfort within homes and a welcoming atmosphere in office settings. Beyond their visual allure, carpets contribute to energy conservation. By acting as a natural thermal barrier, carpets reduce heat loss through floors, helping to maintain ambient temperatures. This energy-saving quality not only enhances comfort but also contributes to reduced heating costs, making them a sustainable choice. In bustling office environments or homes with multiple occupants, noise control is crucial. Carpets significantly reduce noise by absorbing sound, creating quieter and more peaceful surroundings. This acoustic benefit enhances privacy, concentration, and overall tranquillity, fostering a conducive environment for work or relaxation. In essence, carpets are more than just floor coverings; they are integral elements that amalgamate style, comfort, and functionality. With their thermal qualities, energy-saving attributes, and acoustic positives, carpets serve as indispensable fashion statements that elevate the aesthetics and ambiance of any space, whether it's a cozy home haven or a professional office setting.

Navigating Challenges into Opportunities The industry's journey towards sustainability is not without hurdles. 50 Years of History Introducing Interface’s new Past Forward Collection. If you were to visit Kidderminster, England, today, you would be greeted by grand, Victorian textile mills that now mostly lie quiet. But, just a few decades ago, this quaint English town was home to more than thirty carpet manufacturers and was known as the heart and the birthplace of the carpet industry.

including ornate rococo and renaissance visuals, retro patterns with scribbles and boxes, vintage-inspired patchwork styles, and traditional Turkish motifs.

Interconnected paths – From Kidderminster to LaGrange As a small child living in rural England, Oakey may have lived in the centre of the carpet universe, but his knowledge of the industry didn’t extend very far. Still, he saw carpet everywhere he looked, including in the fields surrounding his home, where his father used wool waste from the local factories as a low-cost, sustainable fertilizer.

Interface owes much of its company heritage to this relatively unassuming town. Kidderminster is both the birthplace of the Debron technology used in the earliest fusionbonded carpet tile, and coincidentally, the birthplace of designer David Oakey. Oakey is the founder of David Oakey designs and the chief designer behind dozens of Interface’s most celebrated products, including the new Past Forward carpet tile collection.

Patterns of the Past – Constructed for the Future Past Forward is a celebration of some of Interface’s iconic patterns from decades past—many of which were some of Oakey’s most acclaimed designs. With 14 products featuring a bold colour palette, Past Forward offers a range of dynamic carpet tile styles,

In Oakey’s words, “It seems the perfect time to reflect on the work of the best designs in our history, reminiscent of the broadloom woven patterns, adapting the styles and looks to carpet tile construction.”

Above: : Archival, Parchment

Oakey remembers looking out at a sea of mid-century pinks, purples, reds, and golds amid the crops. He loved the sight of it, but never would have imagined he would one day become one of the leading carpet design minds in the world. → 24

The result is a collection that feels familiar, yet modern—perfect for a time when designers are looking to evoke a sense of nostalgia without sacrificing modern innovations. It is also a fitting celebration for Interface’s 50th anniversary and a good opportunity to look back at its rich history.

24 After completing school, Oakey answered an ad to work as a carpet designer for Milliken in LaGrange, Georgia. It was here where Oakey and Ray Anderson would meet and be inspired by each other, and where Oakey and his team would begin the work to create many of the designs we are celebrating through the Past Forward collection.

Above: Antiquities Coral, Open Air 401 Natural, Textured Woodgrains LVT Antique Oak The paths of David Oakey and Interface are woven together almost as if by fate. When Oakey eventually went on to study carpet design at Kidderminster College, an engineer by the name of Graham Scott was just a few streets away leading the development of a

new, innovative idea: the Debron carpet tile. It wasn’t long after that Interface’s founder, Ray Anderson, would be in the same neighbourhood licensing that same basic technology for manufacture in the United States.

Past Forward — Remastered, Reimagined, and Remade Of course, Interface’s innovations only began with carpet tile. Ray Anderson had a vision to not only to change the world from rolled carpet to tiles, but also to produce products in a way that restored the world. Oakey, inspired by this bold vision, did his part to design some of the most radically innovative products that fulfilled that promise to Interface’s customers.

The Past Forward carpet tiles are manufactured using processes and materials that deliver a low carbon footprint and are constructed with recycled content. Interface’s sustainability journey is at the core of everything they do, and this collection is no exception. The Past Forward carpet tiles are manufactured using processes and materials that deliver a low carbon footprint and are constructed with recycled content. It’s fitting that all those years ago, David Oakey became acquainted with the carpet industry as he watched vibrantly coloured wool waste nourish the earth beneath his father’s crops—a stunning metaphor for the history, beauty, and sustainability at the centre of this collection and all that Interface does. Meet your carpet’s best friend – Dunlop Underlay

C

arpet is the most popular flooring solution on the market, due to its aesthetic, performance properties and environmental benefits. When choosing and installing a carpet, what goes underneath is one of the most important decisions. A quality underlay will enhance the advantages provided by installing carpet and ensure the carpet looks new for longer. Dunlop flooring has been Australia’s market leader in carpet underlay and timber flooring solutions for over 50 years. As Australia’s largest provider of quality foam underlay, they have been committed to offering top-notch flooring performance for all Australians in both residential and commercial settings. A Dunlop underlay can prolong the life of your carpet, keeping it looking newer for longer. A quality underlay can also provide savings on heating bills due to its outstanding thermal insulation properties, reduction in noise transfer and improved acoustics between floors. Selected premium Dunlop underlays are carefully treated with Dunlop Fresh Living, which is a proven anti-microbial, which protects against dust mites, damaging bacteria, mould and mildew which are all significant triggers for asthma hay fever and eczema. It also prevents odours and provides outstanding freshness. Dunlop carpet underlay is 100% recyclable and manufactured from 90% recycled materials which means choosing Dunlop helps leave a lighter footprint. Dunlop runs its own recycling program, Recycle by Dunlop, encouraging retailers to return their used underlay to help make new underlay. Its products are environmentally friendly, achieving a maximum green star rating of ‘gold’ for sustainability and indoor quality. Dunlop Carpet Underlay is accredited by

appearance and retention. This means a longer interval before replacement is necessary, maintaining a higher quality finish. Additionally, underlay helps minimize the visual impact of minor floor imperfections.

the Carpet and Rugs Institute’s Green Label program, a program that identifies products that are low in VOC’s which help promote superior indoor air quality. A high-quality carpet underlay plays a pivotal role in enhancing the long-term durability and performance of carpets, maximizing the advantages of their installation.

Choose Warmth The thickness of a carpet is a key factor determining its thermal insulation properties. Installing a carpet over underlay or carpet cushion increases thermal insulation, reducing energy costs for heating and cooling. A study by Wools of New Zealand demonstrated potential energy savings of up to 12.8% for heating and 11.7% for cooling, emphasizing that thicker carpets yield greater energy efficiency. Carpet underlay further amplifies these benefits, achieving optimal thermal advantages when covering a large area. Many quality underlays are compatible with underfloor heating systems, which have become popular in retail, commercial, and residential settings. Hydronic slab heating, when combined with carpet and underlay, provides radiant heat without making the floor feel warm to the touch. Choose Durability High-quality carpet underlay significantly extends the life of the carpet, safeguarding the investment made in its installation. The underlay absorbs impact forces, reducing wear on the carpet and enhancing its

Choose Peace and Quiet Installing quality carpet and underlay is an effective method to eliminate excessive noise, especially impact noise from footfalls, chairs, and dropped objects. This is particularly crucial in multi-residential projects and homes with active children. Carpet paired with high-quality underlay controls sound reverberation, preventing sounds from bouncing off surfaces and contributing to ambient noise levels. This reduction in noise levels creates a balanced acoustic environment, promoting better communication, relaxation, and concentration. The installation of carpet and quality underlay is instrumental in bringing down long reverberation times to an acceptable level. Choose Comfort Carpet underlay adds an extra layer of comfort underfoot, ensuring that the new carpet feels exceptionally good to walk on for an extended period. The softness and comfort provided by the underlay enhance the safety qualities of the carpet, offering optimal protection against serious injuries resulting from slips and falls. Additionally, underlay reduces foot fatigue by cushioning the foot and minimizing the impact on joints. In essence, investing in high-quality carpet underlay is not just a choice; it's a strategic decision that elevates the overall performance, durability, and comfort of your carpet, promising lasting benefits. web www.dunlopunderlay.com.au s

Is carpet allergy friendly?

W

e tend to think of air pollution as a risk faced outside, but the air we breathe indoors can also be polluted. Around two out of five Australians have allergies, including most people with asthma. The quality of indoor environments in homes and workplaces plays a crucial role in our overall health and well-being.

Kristine Collins, Product Manager SEBO Australia.“There are specific vacuum cleaner features that are best suited to different floor types to maximise debris removal. SEBO provides assistance on selecting the right vacuum cleaner for the floor type. The right vacuum will help ensure a carpet not only looks good, lasts but is hygienic too.”

“Some sources say people with asthma and allergies should replace carpet with hard flooring, but this isn’t always the best option,” states National Asthma Council Australia’s Sensitive Choice Manager Adele Taylor. “Carpets can trap allergens in their pile, while hard floors allow the allergens to float around. In addition to, some modern carpets contain products that reduce mould and dust mites, which are common asthma and allergy triggers.” Carpet provides many health benefits including the positive effect a properly maintained carpet has on indoor air quality (IAQ).

Why your vacuum matters Carpet maintenance includes vacuuming and vacuuming carpets with a SEBO is a great way to improve indoor air quality. Using the right SEBO vacuum cleaner to properly maintain floors can help purify the air. “HEPA filtration alone does not clean carpets.”

SEBO bagged vacuums feature a convenient hygiene lid to seal the Ultrabag after it is full – no dust or allergens (such as mould spores, pollen or pet dander) will escape into the ambient air.

Carpet a healthy option for allergy sufferers Brease carpet is an innovation in carpet technology made by Beaulieu Australia. Treated to prevent the growth of bacteria, mould, mildew and fungi, Brease carpet has been especially developed to be asthma and allergy friendly. “One of the most important steps in caring for your carpet is regular vacuuming”, states Beaulieu Australia’s National Sales Manager Mark Gannon.“A good quality vacuum cleaner, such as SEBO, is critical to extending the life of your carpet, sustaining optimum performance and appearance levels and a healthy indoor environment. It is recommended to use either an upright or quality barrel vacuum cleaner fitted with a power driven rotating brush”.

Flooring December 2023/January 2024

SEBO Vacuums the best for hygienic clean carpet Made in Germany, SEBO vacuum cleaners are recommended by carpet manufacturers for effective debris removal all whilst providing care to carpet fibres. Professional cleaning heads in combination with high performance filtration and sealed debris disposal system make SEBO barrel and upright vacuum cleaners the choice for a healthy carpet. They are not only perfect for carpets; SEBO upright and barrel models are proven on all types of flooring –carpets and rugs, solid and engineered wood floors, laminates, ceramics, natural stone, etc.

A

lisa and Lysandra, or The Design Duo, have just completed their highly anticipated Twin Off.

After their 2013 win on The Block, the designers have built their businesses, Alisa and Lysandra Interiors and A.live Body. From 2018, they have showcased their incredible design projects, both residential and commercial, with their series The Design Duo.

Choosing from our Hycraft range of wool carpets, Alisa used Montrose in colour 510 Gindera, while Lysandra used Chatsworth in 510 Devonshire. As well as the luxurious, velvety feeling underfoot, Alisa and Lysandra appreciated wool’s natural insulating properties, keeping their homes warmer in winter and refreshingly cool in summer.

The Design Duo Twin Off spans across six episodes, following Alisa and Lysandra as they build their own family homes, side by side. Every week, a new episode is aired, featuring identical rooms from both houses, showcasing their unique style and designs. With a healthy level of friendly competition, the series revolves around viewers guessing which design will stand out most. Godfrey Hirst are thrilled to have been part of this fun project by supplying both carpet and hard flooring for each home. With contrasting light and dark flooring for the two homes, it was exciting to be witnessing viewers' reactions as each room was unveiled.

A Trusted Name David Smit started out in the flooring industry immediately after leaving school. With twenty years’ experience ‘on the tools’ working for others and then running his own installation business, David and his wife Angela looked to the next step; launching their own shop. For this important step, they chose Andersens. David and Angela had been researching flooring franchises for some time and had decided to join Andersens. Angela said,“We were very impressed with Andersens; our values lined up perfectly with theirs. It might sound cliché, but they are very much like a

family. We can pick up the phone and call absolutely anyone on the board, the CFO, even Rowan Hodge, the CEO, and they are always happy to help.” And so, in September 2020 Angela and David purchased Crestia Carpets, an existing independent flooring outlet in Wagga Wagga, NSW known locally as ‘Wagga”. David recalls, “When we first converted to Andersens the Crestia store was run down but we were well-funded by Andersens with signage, rebranding and even revamping the store. Andersens have always provided as much help as we need, whenever we need it. We never feel like we are on our own.”

National Expansion Andersens is expanding and locations for new stores are available nationally. The Wagga store is one of the southernmost outlets at the moment, along with Adelaide and the ACT. Wagga is a major regional city in the Riverina region of New South Wales and the state's second largest inland city after Maitland. Located midway between Sydney and Melbourne; Wagga Wagga was once a contender for the site of Australia’s capital. The city is home to training camps for all three of the armed services, including the well-known army training ‘Kapooka,’ constructed in 1942. David says,“We have a somewhat transient population in Wagga, with the military training camps, a major university and two training hospitals. We are always busy; in fact, over my 20-odd year career so far in the industry, I cannot think of a single day without a job. We mostly do domestic work but find we are getting more commercial jobs as we develop. These include a veterinary hospital, a sawmill, shops, and schools.” Wagga has more competition than most cities, but the Andersens name is a terrific bonus for us.”

“Hello Possums” Wagga Wagga was put on the international map by comedian Barry Humphries. The wife of Sir Les Patterson, Dame Edna Everage ‘reportedly’ came from there. Other notable (real-life) Australians from Wagga are Wayne Carey; Geoff Lawson; Mark Taylor; Tony Roche; and Yellow Wiggle Sam Moran. The bushranger Mad Dog Morgan bailed up the police magistrate in 1863 and for dinner conversation you could mention the Chiko Roll, which debuted at the Wagga Agriculture Show in 1951.

An Award-Winning Team At the Andersens National Conference in September the franchise took out the Jack Andersen Award – Franchisee of the Year, Best Store for NSW/ACT/SA, and Best Store for Local Area Marketing. Angela says, “We admire so many of the other Andersens outlets; this was totally unexpected.” Andersens value their franchisees; they don’t just look at turnover, every part of the franchise is valued. David adds, “We couldn’t have achieved this in such a short time without the support of our amazing team.” Crestia by Andersens, as it is often called, is a proud, locally owned and operated family business. Angela says, “We love meeting and helping people. We pride ourselves on client satisfaction, excellence in the industry and being a provider of a great work environment. David and I are ingrained with country values; you do what you say and treat every customer as you would your mother.” David adds, “Our flooring experience spans more than 6 decades. We believe our excellent customer service is the difference that puts us well and truly above our competitors, building on the trusted name that is Andersens. s

Talking Point with Brett Sturgess Article by Brett Sturgess, Managing Director, MJS

T

he thing that I love the most about the Australian flooring industry, is that it’s a mum and dad industry, yes we have corporates within the manufacturing space but largely when you get into the layers down stream of this, the distributors, the importers, the commercial contractors, flooring retailors and the installers-it’s Mum and Dad Australia and it’s a beautiful industry that’s been good to so many families over the years! And the Sturgess family is one of these families. Founded by my late father, Mervyn John Sturgess (MJS) and his late wife Ruth back in 1967, MJS is now a third-generation family company with the grandchildren now taking up positions within the family business and watching it evolve is one of the things I love most about working within the family business! Whilst a third owner of MJS, I have a peculiar connection with my ownership in that I don’t think that they are actually my shares to sell, if in fact they were for salewhich they are not. My relationship is one of “custodian” as I feel like I am in the family relay race having had the family baton passed to myself from my late father, now as MJS’s custodian and manager, getting ready to pass it onto the next generation of Sturgess’s coming into the family business. In viewing myself in this custodian role, whilst I apricate what the pioneers, our parents did for now our industry , I also feel that we now have a responsibility to the next generation in leaving our industry in a better place than how we received it, we need to continue to develop, professionalising our industry insuring sustainability for the next generation-in

Apprentice Charity Workshops - 2023 Article by Fiona Wischnewski, CEO, FCIA 2023 has been a busy but very exciting year for the FCIA and the Apprentice Charity Workshops. We started the year by holding our first 2023 workshop in Wagga Wagga, where eight spritely young flooring apprentices spent a hot week replacing the floors at the Turvey Park Girl Guide Hall.

During their time at the workshop, they laid commercial vinyl in the kitchen, carpet in a breakout room and vinyl planks in a design in two other break out rooms. During this time, we were also fortunate enough to have six students from two local high schools visit the workshop and watch what the apprentices were doing. The students were able to participate in some basic flooring processes which gave them an insight into what a flooring installers job will entail.

In June, we held our second workshop at SAHSSI House, which saw seven apprentices come together to replace the floors in the whole house. This included laying vinyl planks in the lounge, kitchen and dining room, carpet in the bedrooms and landing and commercial vinyl in the bathroom and toilet.

Our last apprentice Charity Workshop for 2023 was held at Ronald Macdonald House Randwick, where the apprentices laid the floors for three family apartments which had just been renovated. This time the workshop was split over two smaller ones with a training day at Mapei in between.

The third apprentice Charity Workshop was held at the end of July together with Terry Bros Carpet Court Forbes. During the week, eight apprentices from Cowra Carpet Court, Forbes Carpet Court and Parkes Carpet Court came together to replace the floors of a local building. This workshop gave the apprentices intensive, practical experience in areas of flooring installation and enabled the apprentices to capture evidence required for their assessments, supported their training and skills development and allowed them to learn specific laying techniques from product specialists and industry experts.

Improve your business: Use the right business management solution Article by Chris Ogden

A

recent trip to Sydney reminded me how satellite navigation has changed our lives. It has removed the need for maps, making navigating large, unfamiliar cities much easier, quicker, and less stressful. It's not hard to understand why this is; from our phone or the screen in our car, we can see where we are, the route to our destination, and how long it will take to get there. We can even see areas of congestion and alternative routes. So it occurs to me that if we can improve our travelling experience using technology, why aren't we using it to improve how we manage our flooring businesses? Many of us in the industry are like the tourist persevering in using maps; we waste time, make bad decisions, get stressed, and we quite literally cannot know where our business is heading. While in Sydney, we visited a client. Like all of us, over recent years, they have had to look hard at their businesses to accommodate the changing environment. They have made significant changes based on data available out of RFMS. They are using their business management system just like we used our satellite navigation app to find their store.

pipeline? What information do you have when considering the direction you want the business to take?

A reader might think I am straining the analogy between satellite navigation and business management. Maybe, but how quickly can you access financial information about last month's trading, and how does it compare to the same month the previous year? How is this month tracking? How much new business has your sales team written, and what is the value of jobs installed and invoiced this month? What's happening with margins, and are you on track to hit budget? How much work do you have in the

These questions are just the tip of the data iceberg. We need access to data to make good decisions. Yet, most flooring businesses cannot access it because their business information sits in silos across numerous processes and systems that don't talk to each other; the various steps in the process of selling flooring can be highly disconnected. Worse, whenever a job moves from one process to another, information must be handled again and rekeyed into the next stage. When I talk to potential clients, the most common pain they are experiencing is handling the same information multiple times and the resulting issues when it's missed or done incorrectly.

If we can improve our travelling experience using technology, why aren't we using it to improve how we manage our flooring businesses? In a true ERP solution, you enter information only once. Google tells us Enterprise Resource Planning solutions "help organisations automate and manage core business processes for optimal performance." What does that mean in a flooring business? If you were using an ERP solution, such as RFMS, in your business, you would quantify a project in a quantifying application and export all the quantities directly into a quote. When the customer confirms, the quote → 48

You might feel that your systems suit you, and of course, that's fine. Remember, though, the most significant constriction on your business is not your entrepreneurial skills. The most common thing flooring people bump their heads against when growing their business is scaling the very manual processes they have in their business. One of the things that most significantly erodes the value of a business when it comes to selling it is those same manual systems.

Many people start the business management process with a generic financial package,

50 Adapting your workplace for accessibility

A

ligning with Australia's antidiscrimination laws, discover the important role flooring plays in helping to create an accessible and inclusive workplace for individuals with disabilities.

Adapting Your Workplace for Accessibility & Disability In Australia, almost 1 in 5 people have a disability and 45.2% of those employed reported that they had experienced unfair treatment or discrimination from their employer, due to their disability. Furthermore, the unemployment rate of working-age people with a disability is 10%, which is more than double the 4.6% of those without a disability. Due to a lack of employer confidence and awareness, Australia has a disability employment gap of 32%, which is much higher than other countries such

as Sweden’s 9.5% and France’s 9.9%. Debunking the common myths and misconceptions, the latest research review update by JobAccess, the Australian Government’s disability employment hub, seeks to promote the clear benefits and undisputed rewards of hiring people with disabilities.

Ensuring compliance with the relevant anti-discrimination laws in Australia There are several federal laws in place to protect individuals from unlawful discriminatory actions in the workplace and other areas of public life.

Besides complying with antidiscrimination laws and providing equal employment opportunities, facilitating an accessible workplace can help both employees and organisations as a whole, to achieve long-term success.

In addition to federal laws, each state and territory also has anti-discrimination legislation to address regional issues. These anti-discrimination laws cover disability as well as other protected attributes such as age, race, sex, intersex status, gender identity and sexual orientation.

In this article, we’ll explore various types of disabilities, and focus on the important role commercial entrance matting, tactile indicators and stair nosings play in helping to create a more inclusive, and disabilityfriendly workplace.

Concerning disability discrimination, employers must familiarise themselves with the following, but not limited to: • Disability Discrimination Act 1992 • Australian Human Rights Commission Act 1986

Flooring December 2023/January 2024

www.flooringmagazine.com.au

Safety • Fair Work Act 2009 • Disability (Access to Premises – Buildings) Standards 2010 All employees and prospective employees are covered by these protections including full-time, part-time, and casual members, probationary employees, apprentices and trainees, and contractors.

Understanding the various types of disabilities When advocating accessibility, it is essential to be aware and respectful of the highly varying types of disabilities that may present in the workplace. These can include mobility, sensory, and cognitive disabilities - some of which may also be invisible.

51 Slip-resistant entrance mats help to prevent slip and fall accidents Absorbing moisture and dirt from shoes, slip-resistant entrance mats help to prevent slip and fall accidents caused by wet, slippery surfaces or the presence of trip hazards. By trapping dust, debris and other contaminants at the door, entrance mats can also help to improve indoor air quality, which is especially important for those with allergies or respiratory conditions.

Unlike residential entrance mats or standard doormats, commercial entrance mats are specifically engineered to provide a safe, slip-resistant surface for foot and wheeled access within high-traffic environments. Minimising the risk of slips, falls and other safety hazard liabilities, you’ll often find them installed at common entry points such as doorways, foyers, and walkways.

Under the Equal Opportunity Act 2010, disability can include: • physical, psychological or neurological disease or disorder • illness, whether temporary or permanent • injury, including work-related injuries. The more aware you are, the more you can prepare and adapt your workplace to be inclusive. Understanding the important role entrance matting, stair nosings and tactile indicators play in creating a more inclusive and disability-friendly workplace Whether it’s vision impairments or other forms of disability, we must ensure dignified, safe and independent access for all members of our community. From installing nonslip matting at entrance and exit points, to installing floor and safety features such as tactile indicators and stair nosings, there are many ways for building professionals to comply with safety regulations and antidiscrimination standards.

Safety Tactile indicators provide important directional and orientation cues In general, there are two main types of tactile indicators – Warning Tactile Indicators and Directional Tactile Indicators. While both provide important directional and orientation cues for the blind and vision impaired, they serve slightly different but complementary purposes.

52 Directional Tactile Indicators Directional tactile indicators are textured features comprising directional bars, installed onto walking surfaces to provide directional orientation. These directional TGSIs assist blind and vision-impaired pedestrians to determine and navigate their next best accessible path of travel. Commonly installed in open areas to assist with continuous navigation, directional tactile indicators also guide people to safely deviate from one path of travel to another.

Above: Directional and warning tactiles provide orientation cues

Warning Tactile Indicators Warning tactile indicators, also commonly referred to as hazard tactile indicators, are textured features installed onto walking surfaces to function as a ‘stop’ sign. These warning TGSIs alert any pedestrians who may be blind or vision-impaired of potential hazards in their path of travel, prompting them to stop and assess the situation before moving forward.

Above: Classic Tredfx Fibreglass Directional Tactiles

Stair nosings help vision impaired people navigate stairs confidently and safely A profiled strip of material, commonly aluminium, stair nosings are installed on the

‘nose’ of a step to provide an anti-slip surface and allow people with vision impairments and disabilities to navigate stairs confidently and safely. Stair nosings with a luminescent insert make the step edge more visible, a crucial visual aid for partially sighted people or in situations of power failure. The importance of installing tactile indicators and stair nosings with sufficient luminance contrast The Australian Standards AS/NZS 1428 requires a minimum level of luminance contrast between certain building elements, and this is reinforced by the Building Code of Australia (BCA). To comply with Australian Standards, both Tactile Indicators and Stair Nosings must achieve a minimum luminance contrast. This ensures that the vision impaired can safely navigate built environments. Classic Architectural Group have a free online calculator that gives you instant luminance contrast results for your chosen substrate and tactile indicator or stair nosing, with a pass or fail to Australian Standards. You can also have a report with your results emailed to you immediately.

57 Floor tiles at Cersaie 2023

Article by Joe Simpson, Tile Today's international correspondent

A

dominant product at this year’s event was travertine-effect floor tiles, they were everywhere, and many were very beautiful. I think two factors have triggered this travertine resurgence. One is that warm beige tones appear to be this season’s neutral of choice. So while light grey may have led to concrete-effects, and white to Carrara marble lookalikes, lighter beige tones — buttermilk, ivory, and even magnolia — find an ideal complement in travertine. The other is the widespread adoption of next generation surface sculpting techniques, notable digital glues and granilla, and sinking inks, that allow manufacturers to offer stone-effects with real depth of tone and texture. Factor in some polishing innovations, and the end result are travertine-effect tiles that simulate both the look and feel of high-end natural stone. These porcelain tiles, of course, are 100% stable over UFH, easy to clean, non-porous, and scratch resistant. In short, they have a great deal to offer specifiers and homeowners, and work with a huge array of different decor styles. There is only one problem, they all tend

to merge into one. I saw many great examples at Cersaie, but I would struggle to name one that stood out from the rest. So I think this will be a great and long-lived category for retailers, but I’m not sure it will change the game for manufacturers.

The earthy colour palette is exceptional. The Walnut tone is the colour of the original marble, featuring beautiful hazel colours with shades of creamy ivories and veins in browns and deep mocha colours. The Silver tone is a silver-grey colour full of nuances, with flashes of honey and brown with soft golden touches. The Almond tone is the lightest version, with cream tones tinged by dark veining and warm beiges, plus touches of golden brown.

Above: Ariostea’s Twin.s. (That’s not a

typo) is a new, high-performance porcelain stoneware collection That being said, I will illustrate this dominant trend with Travertino by Gayafores. This is a natural looking design embracing warmth, textural richness, and graphic diversity. Based on a stone from Ancient Persia, it is notable for the beauty and fluidity of its “vein-cut” surface. The collection is complemented by a directional, softly ribbed relief decoration.

Again, the end product of advanced manufacturing technologies, these products come alive as light passes over them, with shadow effects energising the surface. The variegated grey tonality is also very adaptable, while these products can offer whatever level of slip-resistance is required. The smoother floor tiles are often paired with a more structured wall tile, for a monolithic look that can be softened with bold fabrics or other contrasting finishes.
