while urging students to strive to acquire a college education.

Journalist Alison Stewart in her book “First Class: The Legacy of Dunbar, America’s First Black Public High School” said the values of Dunbar do not lie in the structure but in the living evidence of those who witnessed and passed through the system. She wrote her book to document the history of Dunbar High School so its story will not be lost in the wake of the school’s original structure being demolished a number of times.

— in 1977 and 2013. Alison observed that the school has had its highs and lows and has been representative of the city. She said that though the old structure had been demolished, the newly erected Dunbar High School embodies the spirit and legacy of the school.

Dunbar High School is the first public high school for AfricanAmerican students in the U.S. It has produced many influential African Americans like Edward Brooke, the first person to be elected to the U.S. Senate; Benjamin O. David Jr, the first African-American Air Force general, and many more.

The school started in the basement of the 15th Street Presbyterian Church with the goal of providing education to African-American children. It was initially named M Street High School before it took on the name Dunbar in 1916, as reported by Saving Places. The school was named after AfricanAmerican poet Paul Laurence Dunbar.

The school launched a concerted campaign to attract the most intelligent African-American students in the districts. The school demanded academic excellence from each of its students amid racial segregation. It encouraged students to dare to dream beyond their reach.

It made students believe that it is possible to become anything they dreamed of irrespective of the color of their skin. Dunbar High School authorities also made sure that students used grammar correctly when speaking English

The Dunbar High School was demolished and rebuilt twice

Surviving Cancer

In the 1960s and 1970s, Black schools were at the heart of race riots and post-civil actions which were not conducive to teaching and learning. This explains why the new Dunbar High School has a towering look that welcomes everyone and radiates a community where academic excellence is the hallmark.

shock. I didn't want to go through another nightmare, three times. All I could said was, "help me, Lord." Please help me before I lose control. In King Jesus mighty name. Amen!

I have a history of (meningiona) cancer. And been in battles for years. I'm wounded from fighting cancer. The third time around knocked me down hard. And almost put me under.

In the year, 2000, I was experiencing severe headaches. Therefore; my physician ordered a MRI. And it revealed a baseball size benign tumor in my right temporal lobe. I was very devastated after receiving the news. My first brain tumor (meningiona) was surgical removed successfully.

The second time around, meningiona returned with a vengeance. It was brain cancer. I accepted the news better. It was indeed, a third time around. When oncologist told me the bad news, saying the cancer had spreader.

Tears started rolling down my face none stop. I was extremely disappointed, emotionally in

My chemo and radiation treatments were on the same days. Afterward, my body would be so drained and weak. When I did arrive home, all, I could do was laid down after those

Surviving Cancer (Continued)

treatments. I thank God for holding me up when I couldn't hold myself up.

I would cry constantly due to high pain levels. I wasn't myself at all. This changed my entire attitude. Nobody should have to go through this. It's a terrible, horrible nightmare.

Praying is automatically, because that's who I am. And I prayed constantly for God to heal me. I walked in faith and kept hope alive, with no guarantees of the outcome. My last cancer treatments ended on my birthday, October 7.

In addition, to the above serious health issues. Shortly, after cancer treatments ended, I woke up one morning gasping for air. Because I couldn't breath. I called the ambulance and was taken to the hospital. Many tests were conducted while I was in ER.

The findings from tests revealed numerous blood clots in my lungs. I was placed in ICU for monitoring. Unfortunately, my body had accumulated more added complications.

Thank God for great doctors and specialists. I stayed four day, in the hospital and was discharged home on blood thinners.

Doctors recommended a nurse and physical therapy visits me weekly.

I never thought, I would ever be in the shape that I was in. One while, I thought, about going to the nursing home. Because of the things, I can't do for myself. And things I have no control over. However; those thoughts changed with the wind. To God be the glory.

I'm determined and stay focus by praying and striving to become independent again. To regain mobility and strength. Healing is a process and it will happen on God's timing. Therefore; my outcome will be a win win.

When I look back over my life, tears flows, because if it wasn't for God on my side, where would I be? I wouldn't made it through the bad and ugly. Cancer shattered my life, and turned it upside down.

My life is like a roller coaster. It's up and down and will never be the same. Cancer took it toll on me, mentally, and physically. Never take life for granted. Appreciate it while you can.

Because tomorrow isn't promise.

Never regret a day in your life. A good day gives happiness, bad days gives experience, worst days gives lessons and the best days gives memories.

You find out who you can count on when going through adversities of life over and over. My deepest appreciation goes out to God's faithful saints/angels. They were very supportive and stood by me through it all. Thank all of you for every act of kindness shown on my behalf. In King Jesus mighty name. Amen!!

No matter what we're facing, God is our healer, and is bigger than any illness. Through it all, God stepped in and gave me peace that passes all understanding. Never give up, because you're not alone.

Give Love on Christmas Day

If you are at a point where you and the other parent have already split, you still need to do everything you can to coparent with one another effectively and amicably. Because failing to do so will not hurt either of you, but it will hurt the children. Sometimes pride has to be swallowed and hurt has to be forgiven for the sake of the kids involved.

This week we are going to take a break from the ins and outs of the family law practice and focus more what’s actually important, family. No matter what the basis of the case, usually my clients simply want what they feel is best for their family. But at times, what’s best for their family is simply communicating with them. Now I’m well aware that if it weren’t for people getting divorced or having discourse in their families, I wouldn’t have much of a future in family law. However, I figure it’s better to learn how to avoid starting a fire than depending on a fireman to put it out for you.

This Christmas when you are gathering with your families, take stock and realize how blessed you are to be with them. There are people who have no one and would do anything to have someone to be with during the holidays. If you find yourself fighting with your spouse or the other parent of your child to the point where you think you need to get a divorce or take legal action; stop and ask yourself why. Is it worth ending a relationship or is it something that can be addressed with proper communication and accountability. Even in my limited experience I see issues that could be resolved if the parties would simply be reasonable and talk to each other instead of at each other.

Nobody wants to fight on Christmas, and the risk of sounding cliché, let’s all make an effort spread a bit more love and cheer this season. If the other parent is going to be an hour late to an exchange or won’t have child support until later in the month, consider extending some grace this holiday season instead of immediately filing an enforcement.

I want to thank you for taking the time to read my articles every week. I hope this holiday season is one of joy and blessings and that you and your families remain safe as we prepare to head into a new year. From myself and everyone at O’Neil Wysocki Family Law, I want to wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays.

Juanita Craft NAACP

Gala

Oh, What A Day by Dr. J. Ester Davis

Debra’s Bits and Pieces

the 38th Floor overlooking the nation’s 9th largest city is impressive. Contrary to the negative images often portrayed in some media, African Americans have a rich and storied history of etiquette, great style and decorum. Mrs. Craft was a sheer example of this cause setting a high bar.

You have to wonder what would Juanita Craft had been given the opportunity to live up to her ideas with true freedoms to propel her forward. Could she have been Katherine Yarborough and won the world with her beautiful voice. Could she have been Mary Ellen Pleasant, a self-made millionaire, obviously born in slavery, who amassed a fortune in real estate and became the “Mother of Civil Rights” in California. It is believed that she financed the John Brown Raid.

Juanita Craft was not a socialite. She was considered a lover of children with a dream of the opportunities, the promises the NAACP could be to African Americans. She was quite simply a miracle worker in a desert land.

Mrs. Juanita Craft instead left a legacy in the NAACP that remains unmatched. She started chapters of the NAACP across the State of Texas. And so …. on the 9th day of December, 2022, the Dallas Chapter of the NAACP came together to extend and celebrate her noted national influence. The evening was magical, the tables were graciously set for the ‘royal court’, the music stirring with Miss Pam on keyboard, the best dressed list invited and the ambience samples of the best in Texas. You have to admit

I found it ironic that Mrs. Mitchell, an honoree and 101 years old, told us that when she started working at DISD, they could not join the NAACP. If they did, they would be fired. At the same ‘party’ we had Edna Pemberton’s great granddaughter, nine (9) years old, selling her line of lip gloss.

Mrs. Craft would have enjoyed the evening. But more expressly, she would have shared a nod and a smile had she witnessed the words of Dallas NAACP President, Dr. Sharon Middlebrooks. In truth,

The President reminded us in her affirming voice that black media needs our finances, our ads, our forgotten stories and our networks. It was the black press that gave birth to the rise of the NAACP, black “Bourgoisie”, the national conventions, operation breadbasket, some of the most prestigious and well-respected black organizations we enjoy today.

To the committee…. great job! To the rest of the best…. send in your membership. See you next year.

Within its walls, you will hear stories from some of the neighborhood’s most devoted residents, view historical artifacts and memorabilia, as well as historical pictures from well-known photographers Marion Butts, Inyang Essien, and Nitashia Johnson.

As an organization, Broadway Dallas strives to deliver the “spirit of Broadway”, not only here in Fair Park, but throughout the region in classrooms and other centers for art, community, and education.
