Award: ICDC’s founder, Diane Ragsdale, was honored by the Smith Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church with the 2023 Community Service Award. During her speech, she states that

“It is simply not enough to be included at the table. Diversity is not enough. We have to change the systems that continue to promote that which is unjust and unfair.” She goes on to encourage us to create new structures that serve us all.
ICDC is so proud of the impactful work Ms. Ragsdale continues to do. Congratulations on this wonderful achievement!

DALLAS — Mayor Eric Johnson released a film today highlighting his journey to public service and the progress made in Dallas during his first four years in office.
“I ran for Mayor because I believed that Dallas could be better,” said Mayor Johnson. “Today, I believe our city is stronger than when I took office four years ago. That is why I am pleased to share this new film highlighting the journey we have taken and the progress that we have made—together.”
Since taking office in 2019, Mayor Johnson has worked tirelessly to clean up local government, lower crime, improve the economy, reduce taxes, and create jobs. In his first term as Mayor, he led the city through the COVID-19 pandemic, multiple tornadoes, devastating winter storms, a surge in violent crime, civil unrest, and many other challenges.
Prior to his election as Mayor of Dallas, Mayor Johnson represented Dallas in the Texas House of Representatives for nearly a decade.
Mayor Johnson is unopposed in the upcoming general election on Saturday, May 6, 2023.

Everything to know about the Mexican American holiday
Haadiza OgwudeCincinnati Enquirer
Cinco de Mayo, also known as the Battle of Puebla Day, is Friday.
The annual celebration marks the anniversary of Mexico’s victory over the French Empire in 1862 at the Battle of Puebla during the FrancoMexican War. Although it’s often confused with Independence Day in Mexico (Día de la Independencia), celebrated on Sept. 16, Cinco de Mayo is also an important day in Mexico’s history and commemorates Mexican American culture in the United States.

How is Cinco de Mayo celebrated in the United States?
Cinco de Mayo celebrations often include parades, parties, mariachi music, Mexican folk dancing and traditional foods, such as tacos, enchiladas, tamales and mole poblano. Los Angeles, California; Chicago, Illinois, and Houston, Texas, are among the cities with the largest Cinco de Mayo celebrations in the United States.

Alex Beebe and Nanci Mendoza soldiers defeated 6,000 French soldiers during a battle in Puebla de Los Angeles, a small town in EastCentral Mexico. Days later, Mexican President Benito Juárez declared May 5 a national holiday.
According to USA Today, the holiday commemorates the start of France leaving Mexico during a time when Mexico was “economically vulnerable.”
The battle also had an impact on the American Civil War. After France was defeated, the Confederacy could not use the European country as an ally to win the war, per USA Today.
Why do we celebrate Cinco de Mayo?
While it’s not a significant holiday in Mexico, Cinco de Mayo has become an annual celebration of Mexican American culture in the United States.
The celebration of Cinco de Mayo began as a form of resistance to the effects of the Mexican American War, which occurred in the late 19th century. The holiday gained popularity during the Chicano Movement of the 1960s and 1970s. By the 1980s, companies began commercializing holidays.
Today there are Cinco de Mayo festivities throughout the United States and Mexico, especially in Puebla.

Their wedding is being called the ‘wedding of the year’ by family and friends. The wedding was held at the beautiful outdoor venue Divine Grace, 3747 Grace Ranch Trail, McKinney, TX. The open-air wedding ceremony included a traditional catholic unity rosary segment called a “Lasso”. The end of the ceremony, Alex’s parents continued the African tradition of placing

In the open pavilion cocktails and hours d’ oeuvres were served to guests mingling on the beautifully manicured grounds. After cocktail hour, the wedding moved to the beautiful grand ballroom. The wait staff served a three-course lobster or chicken dinner in a formal setting. The evening of joy included entertainment from a lady DJ, dancing and the traditional serenade from Alex’s and his Fraternity brothers to Nanci.

Debra’s Bits and Pieces
the consumer banking giant was ordered to pay $3.7 billion in fines and refunds to customers by U.S. government regulators, after The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau listed out an abundance of consumer financial law violations, from illegal fees and interest on auto loans and mortgages, as well as wrongly applied overdraft fees against savings and checking accounts.
The bureau said the bank’s bad behavior impacted more than 16 million customers.
Over the last two years, Wells Fargo has put big money into rectifying its relationships. The company closed
$10 billion in financing through its community lending and investment group and $5.7 billion in financing through its group aimed at developing affordable housing and communities.
Jakes called the partnership disruptive in its ability to bring overdue transformation to Black and brown communities across the U.S.
“We recognize the need for CEOs like Charlie Scharf bending the arc and aim of Wells Fargo toward correcting systemic inequalities,” Jakes said. “We are committed to ensuring additional opportunities actually reach as many areas of need that we can influence.”
Taste and Tell!
Wells Fargo & Company and the T.D. Jakes Group, which includes the Dallas megachurch pastor’s multiple enterprises, are joining together over the next decade with the goal of revitalizing neighborhoods and driving economic opportunity.
Wells Fargo said it could give as much as $1 billion in capital and financing to the effort, as well as grants from the Wells Fargo Foundation.
“This strategic partnership goes beyond a one-off capital investment and underscores our continued commitment to diverse and inclusive communities,” said CEO of Wells Fargo Charlie Scharf.
The Wells Fargo Foundation and T.D. Jakes Foundation also plans to push capital into low-and moderate-income communities to increase homeownership and create businesses in several cities including Atlanta, Chicago and Dallas. With the first project near Atlanta, the project is set to prioritize green space
along with mixed-income housing and an array of single-family homes, townhomes and apartments, alongside grocers and healthcare.
Building out this kind of real estate development is not a new endeavor for the pastor-turned-businessman. Seated on a rare lush hill ten minutes from downtown Dallas is Capella Park, a master-planned 400-acre neighborhood funded by one of Jakes’ nonprofits, built just a mile from his megachurch, The Potter’s House.
Elements of the Fort McPherson development will be modeled after Jakes’ Dallas multigenerational community.
The union between the bank and the iconic Black pastor comes after a slew of discrimination and labor violation settlements throughout the last decade that challenged the bank’s reputation with historically marginalized groups.

In 2012, Wells Fargo agreed to pay a $184 million settlement to homeowners after customers alleged the bank discriminated against qualified Black and Latino borrowers in its mortgage lending from 2004 through 2009.
More recently, the bank agreed to pay $7.8 million in back wages and interest to resolve allegations of hiring discrimination in 2020, after the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs alleged Wells Fargo discriminated against more than 34,000 African-American applicants and hundreds of female candidates.

May is Women’s Health Month
DALLAS – Parkland Health is encouraging women to give themselves permission to pause and put their health first. A recent survey commissioned by the Alliance for Women’s Health and Prevention (AWHP) found that nearly half of American women skip preventive care services like check-ups, cancer screenings and vaccinations, often due to time constraints. The report also found that social and environmental factors often contribute to disparities in preventive care.
Cross-culturally, women tend to be the primary providers of care for family members with chronic medical conditions or disabilities, including the elderly. This responsibility, on top of childcare and work responsibilities, can often lead to women putting themselves last when it comes to their own primary and preventive care, resulting in late detection of chronic illnesses.
Parkland providers want to encourage women to take proactive steps to improve their health by holding a community event designed specifically for women.
“Making your health a priority is not selfish, it’s an act of love and the foundation of a good life,” said Marjorie Quint-Bouzid, DPA, RN, NEA, BC, Senior Vice President of Women & Infants’ Specialty Health at Parkland.
Parkland will host its first Permission to Pause Women’s Health Event on Saturday, May 6. The collaboration with Dramatic Results Salon & Day Spa aims to create a comfortable space for women to simply put themselves first. Health resources, live music, food, spa amenities and more will be available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 111 S. Cedar Ridge Dr., Duncanville, 75116.
Parkland services that will be offered at no cost include:
Blood pressure screening
Blood sugar screening
Women’s health education
Behavioral health education
Tips for healthy eating
Breast health education and assistance with scheduling future mammogram appointments
Parkland Financial Assistance
“Too often, Black women put their own health at the bottom of their ‘to-do list.’
If at least one woman leaves this event feeling lighter and more supported with the proper resources and education to start prioritizing her health, we have accomplished our goal,” said Angela Morris, Senior Director of Community Relations at Parkland. “Permission to pause means giving yourself grace and relieving yourself of everyday responsibilities in order to go inward and listen to your own body.”
