Harry Belafonte, activist and entertainer, dies at 96

their “social responsibilities,” and mentoring Usher, Common, Danny Glover and many others. In Spike Lee’s 2018 film “BlacKkKlansman,” he was fittingly cast as an elder statesman schooling young activists about the country’s past.

Longhorn Ballroom Reopens with hopes of Building on its Rich History
NEW YORK (AP) — Harry
Belafonte, the civil rights and entertainment giant who began as a groundbreaking actor and singer and became an activist, humanitarian and conscience of the world, has died. He was 96.
Belafonte died Tuesday of congestive heart failure at his New York home, his wife Pamela by his side, said Paula M. Witt, of public relations firm Sunshine Sachs Morgan & Lylis.
With his glowing, handsome face and silky-husky voice, Belafonte was one of the first Black performers to gain a wide following on film and to sell a million records as a singer; many still know him for his signature hit “Banana Boat Song (Day-O),” and its call of “Day-O! Daaaaay-O.” But he forged a greater legacy once he scaled back his performing career in the 1960s and lived out his hero Paul Robeson’s decree that artists are “gatekeepers of truth.”
He stands as the model and the epitome of the celebrity activist. Few kept up with Belafonte's time and commitment and none his stature as a meeting point among Hollywood, Washington and the civil rights movement.
Belafonte not only participated in protest marches and benefit concerts, but helped organize and raise support for them. He worked closely with his friend and generational peer the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., often intervening on his behalf with both politicians and fellow entertainers and helping him financially. He risked his life and livelihood and set high standards for younger Black celebrities, scolding Jay Z and Beyonce for failing to meet
Belafonte’s friend, civil rights leader Andrew Young, would note that Belafonte was the rare person to grow more radical with age. He was ever engaged and unyielding, willing to take on Southern segregationists, Northern liberals, the billionaire Koch brothers and the country’s first Black president, Barack Obama, whom Belafonte would remember asking to cut him “some slack.”
Belafonte responded, “What makes you think that’s not what I’ve been doing?”
Belafonte had been a major artist since the 1950s. He won a Tony Award in 1954 for his starring role in John Murray Anderson’s “Almanac” and five years later became the first Black performer to win an Emmy for the TV special “Tonight with Harry Belafonte.”
One of Texas’ most iconic music venues has reopened with hopes of converting the Longhorn Ballroom and the area surrounding it, into a full-fledged music complex on the northeast corner of Corinth St. and Riverfront Blvd., bringing new life to the Cedars area, just south of Downtown.

Developer and Kessler Theater owner, Edwin Cabaniss, hosted a grand reopening celebration on March 30, 2023, hours before Asleep At The Wheel took the stage. Cabaniss purchased the 72-year-old music venue back in 2021, saving it from disrepair and the threat of demolition. His team is also in the process of pursuing listing of the entire property on the National Register
In 1954, he co-starred with Dorothy Dandridge in the Otto Premingerdirected musical “Carmen Jones,” a popular breakthrough for an all-Black cast. The 1957 movie “Island in the Sun” was banned in several Southern cities, where theater owners were threatened by the Ku Klux Klan because of the film’s interracial romance between Belafonte and Joan Fontaine. of Historic Places
Today, the Longhorn Ballroom is hosting music once again as a completely revamped music destination thanks to some help from the City of Dallas. In May 2022, the City Council approved rezoning the property with modified development standards to allow for an outdoor music venue, in addition to the iconic 2,000 seat ballroom. On September 28, 2022, the City Council approved an incentive package of $4.1 million to help with the $14 million project.

Contempt: Where You Don’t Want to Be with
Miles D. PetersonLast week I discussed enforcements and how they are used to make the other party fall in line. Filing an enforcement action is all well and good, but usually it’s only part of your available relief. Because what good is simply ordering someone to comply when they have already refused to do so previously? Requesting the Court to find the other party in contempt gives your enforcement the extra weight needed to make them think twice before disobeying again.
As mentioned last week, contempt of a court order occurs when a party violates or directly disobeys an order of the court. In the field of family law these violations are usually failure to pay child support and/or withholding visitation. To get an order for contempt granted you must, like everything else, prove that certain elements were met. These elements are that the other party had knowledge of the order, had the ability to comply with the order, and that despite having the ability to comply they didn’t.

I always tell my clients that want to seek enforcement with the request for contempt to make sure they have kept a record of the other party’s violations. Because if you want the other party to be found in contempt you will need to be specific when showing their violations. That includes what order was violated, how the other party violated the order, where the order was violated, and when (both time and date) the order was violated. If you don’t have this specific proof, it is possible that the judge will not hold the other side in contempt.
There are two different types of contempt: civil and criminal. However, the difference between them is not as obvious as you may think. For example, both civil and criminal contempt can include fines as well as jail time. The difference is criminal contempt is meant to punish the disobeying party, whereas civil contempt is more meant to make the harmed party whole again. Because of this, if a party is ordered jail time over civil contempt it may just be until they pay their child support, whereas if they are found in criminal contempt for not paying, they will have to serve their sentence.
To News Media: Would The Third verse of The Star Spangled Banner Be Considered as "Hate Speech"

Dear Media:
Would you consider that the third verse of the Star Spangled Banner promising that:
The slave will not be able to "escape the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave " to be hate speech?
What if it promised that:
The Jew will not be able to escape the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave?
Or promised that: Gays will not be able to escape the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave?
Is it ok to just say this about blacks but no one else?
Why do Americans have to stand at attention everytime they play this slave master's song which was adopted for our National Anthem, a song that includes'hate speech", regarding the black slave. Why do we continue to honor this slave master at every public event with his "Defense of Fort McHenry" song, better known as the Star

Iconic Golfers Statue Unveiling at Cedar Crest Golf Course
This Dallas native, Kevin Kelley, spoke highly about his minority staff and the opportunities he gives them. He conversed about his location in downtown Chicago, but delightfully shared his plans to open his 3rd, Kitchen + Kocktail Restaurant. Known for his unique Texas taste of food and cocktails, this ‘man on the move’ footprints will be marked soon in Washington D.C.
It was exciting to chat with Kevin Kelley in Dallas but I look forward to continuing as he soars high in great places.

DALLAS, Texas — Cedar Crest Golf Course (CCGC), in partnership with the I AM a Golfer Foundation (IAMGF), is hosting a statue unveiling ceremony of golf legends Dr. Charlie Sifford and Walter Hagen at 10:00AM on Monday, May 8, 2023 at Cedar Crest Golf Course, 1800 Southerland Ave Dallas, TX 75203.

Golf icons Dr. Sifford and Hagen both won championships at Cedar Crest. Dr. Sifford, also known as “The Jackie Robinson of Golf”, won the 1954 UGA Negro National Open. The statue of Dr. Sifford at Cedar Crest Golf Course will be the first larger-than-life statue of him ever made.
“My father, Dr. Charles Sifford, would have been thrilled and honored having his life’s story told in this manner here at Cedar Crest,” Charles Sifford Jr., son of the golf legend Dr. Sifford, said. “My father overcame many adversities as he strived to play professional golf. This installation will ensure that generations to come will also know of and be inspired by the grit and perseverance that it took for a man of color to play a sport that he loved. Dr. Charles Sifford was a trailblazer for the sport of golf who wanted the injustices removed to ‘Just Let Him Play’”.

Father of Professional Golf.”
The statues of Hagen and Dr. Sifford were both designed by local artist Emmanuel Gillespie.
The unveiling will take place immediately after a scholarship awarding presentation, where the I AM a Golfer Foundation will honor two students with a combined $20,000 in financial aid. Since its inception in 2018, IAMGF has engaged over 450 area youth in instructional programming, created and hosted 71 paid internship positions for area students and awarded more than $95,000 in higher education scholarships.
"These statues provide a permanent reminder of the footprints that these two legendary greats left not only at Cedar Crest Golf Course, but also on the game of golf,” Dave Ridley, Co-Founder of the I AM a Golfer Foundation, said. “This gift to the City marks a major milestone in our foundation's efforts to raise awareness of, and appreciation for, this historic golf course.”
Cedar Crest Golf Course was designed by A.W. Tillinghast, one of the most prolific architects in the history of golf, and it continues to be a favorite of Dallas golf enthusiasts. With its rolling terrain, greenside bunkers and tree-lined fairways, the statues of Dr. Sifford and Hagen at Legends Plaza will make an excellent addition to the beautiful course.
“Words cannot express how fortunate we are to have the opportunity to honor the game of golf and these two legends of golf in this way,” Ira Molayo,

General Manager of Cedar Crest Golf Course, said. “We are standing on the shoulders of these men today with the hope of inspiring golfers for the next 100 years as well. It's an honor to have had these legends of golf be crowned as champions on this A.W. Tillinghast gem, Cedar Crest Golf Course."

CDC: Sexually transmitted infections hit record high in U.S. Parkland Health promotes STI prevention, testing, and treatment
cases of syphilis and more than 10,000 cases of gonorrhea in 2020. Although slightly down from the year prior, more than 17,000 cases of chlamydia were still reported in 2020 and 688 people were newly diagnosed with HIV in Dallas County as well.
April is STI Awareness Month, but Parkland offers testing, treatment and STI education year-round throughout our health system, including at our 16 Community Oriented Primary Care (COPC) health centers and through our Access to Care & Coverage Program, which brings Parkland to a neighborhood near you.

DALLAS – A new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) calls it an “epidemic.” Reported cases of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis all increased between 2020 and 2021 – reaching a total of more than 2.5 million reported cases nationwide.
While troubling, the report came as no surprise to infectious disease experts at Parkland Health. According to data published in the 2022 Dallas County Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA), reported cases of syphilis and gonorrhea have increased every year in Dallas County since 2015.
“STIs are increasing, and most people who have STIs do not have symptoms. The only way to know you have an STI is to be tested regularly,” said Helen King, MD, Infectious Disease Specialist at Parkland Health and Assistant Professor, Division of Infectious Diseases and Geographic Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center. “Having untreated STIs can impact your ability to have children, so it is so important to get tested regularly and treated.”
According to the CHNA, Dallas County recorded more than 3,000
“Parkland is committed to reducing STIs in our community by empowering our community members to take control of their sexual wellness,” said Dr. King. “Getting tested, getting treated, and talking to your provider and partners about options to protect your sexual wellness can keep you safe and healthy.”
Having an STI can increase your chances of acquiring HIV, according to Dr. King who adds that anyone who is having sex should learn about their options to prevent STIs and HIV, including testing, condoms and PrEP, the medication that prevents HIV.
In addition to Parkland’s COPCs and community pop-ups, STI/HIV screenings and education will also be available at the following upcoming community events:

Child Abuse Prevention Doesn’t Stop in April

We also want to remind parents that one of the best ways to keep your child safe from online forms of abuse is to engage them in frequent and simple conversations about healthy relationships and boundaries before exploitation starts.
We know the threat of online exploitation can be scary—but talking with your child and letting them know about the resources out there to assist them is a great first step! For more information on how to navigate these conversations, visit our NetSmartz platform.

Meet Haley Taylor Schlitz!

Each April, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) joins other organizations across the country to call attention to National Child Abuse Prevention Month.
As the month comes to an end, NCMEC wants to remind the public that April isn’t the only time to talk to your children about safety. As online exploitation continues to spike year after year, talking to your kids about child safety is one of the most important ways you can equip them with vital prevention information.
Prevention of online exploitation is key. However, NCMEC understands that some children live in fear that explicit photos of them are – or could be – shared online. NCMEC is proud to launch a new powerful tool to help children remove those images. This tool, aptly named, Take It Down, is available now and allows users from around the world to submit a report that can help remove online nude, partially nude, or sexually explicit photos and videos depicting a child under 18 years old.
