Business Interruption Insurance questions answered First, I hope you all are well and taking every reasonable precaution to avoid getting sick from the virus. Some of us are but some people do not seem to care about themselves or you and me. I’m trying to avoid those people.

Next, I want to, again, urge anyone who has an insurance policy for their business that includes business interruption coverage or that you think might include that type of coverage to speak with a lawyer or cpa or business advisor to see Brian Eberstein if you have a claim for your economic losses. Of course, you are always welcome to call me as I am reviewing insurance policies now regarding business interruption losses. To date, all insurance companies are denying these claims despite the facts that people paid their premiums and have suffered extreme financial losses. THE RUNOFF ELECTION IS JULY 14, 2020

At some point in time, our country, or maybe half the population, has to decide WHEN it will stop treating certain people as 2nd class citizens. Why are we still at this point in time ? Again ?

I believe it’s because we continue to either ignore the importance of the ballot box, elections, or because we believe our one individual vote will not make any difference. That is

IF NOT NOW, WHEN? so wrong and we are seeing the results of self serving criminals getting elected now.

We’ve seen it before in this country. Europe has seen in often.

Even now in Europe.

We have at the top rung in our government a deranged person who wants to call out “ his army “ to stop constitutionally protected rights of persons who are simply tired of being treated as 2nd class citizens and 2nd class people.

As a historian or a student of history, that sounds like what my relatives faced in Europe less than 100 years ago. As a historian or a student of history, that sounds like what happened in Texas and most southern states shortly after a civil war was fought in this country. That sounds like what many of us saw right here in the 1960s and even until today. So WHEN are we going to be done with 2nd class citizens and 2nd class people ? DeSoto ISD Superintendent Dr. D’Andre Weaver Speaks on Social Justice

DESOTO, TX - This weekend took me back to December 2015, when my former student, Quintonio LeGrier, was killed on his front porch by a Chicago Police Officer who stated he reacted out of fear. Q was the perfect student, quiet, and loved math and science. He was one of the students who inspired me to run the Chicago Marathon to raise money to purchase clean drinking water for kids in Africa. I miss him. I still think about him to this day.

As an educator, I’ve seen our public education system fail at effectively ensuring that students not only learn core content at equitably rigorous levels, but also fail at helping students learn about the realities of race, class, privilege, and collective responsibility. I’ve seen educators and leaders shy away from addressing issues of race and equity because of fear, pride, or politics. When we fail to teach our children about the reality of their existence, we fail to prepare them for the reality of the worlds in which they live. As educators, we have a responsibility to help students learn the things that really matter the most.

Like many, I sat paralyzed watching the image of another dead Black American lay lifeless in the street. I’ve been alive long enough to see my share, yet I still feel all the feelings, compounded, as if each execution was happening again for the very first time.

For a moment, I lost hope in humanity and struggled to find the strength to say the name of the latest victim. I struggled with watching and saying the names of the recent ones.

Here’s what we should do.

Educators at all levels must not be silent.

I’m exhausted by the number of Black Americans who’ve been unjustly killed or jailed in this country. And, I’m tired of the systemic inequities that continue to exist in this country and in the educational system to which I’ve committed my life.

I’ve spoken at funerals and tried to comfort the parents of students who have unjustly died at the hands of rogue police officers who do not take their oaths seriously.

I’ve prayed at the bedsides of Black students injured by gun violence. In fact, I am still traumatized by the gun violence that was inflicted on my own family. If the continued loss of Black American human life does not stir up in each of us the need to make personal and societal change in these United States of America, what will?

As this country deals with the COVID-19 pandemic, it must also deal with the racial pandemic that has overtly and covertly affected Black Americans, like me, for hundreds of years.

This weekend, I’ve felt my share of sadness, frustration, and fear. Sadness because of the 8 minutes it took to dehumanize a fellow American, remove the God-given breath from his body and for his life to be strangled away, powerless, as a man’s knee stayed pressed upon his neck. I watched my childhood neighborhood destroyed,

the school building that I led as a principal broken into, and the Chicago landmarks that played backdrop to my upbringing changed forever. Frustration because this isn’t the first, second, or third time Black life has been taken without cause.

I know this probably won’t be the last time, either. Fear because I’m concerned about the long-term effects that the first six months of 2020 will have on Americans, particularly people of color, people who have experienced unemployment and extreme poverty, whose dreams have been deferred, and those who feel as if they just can’t get a break. And even more fear because the West side of Chicago, home to so many black and brown families, became an economic desert and never recovered after the 1968 riots which erupted in response to the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. I’m afraid of history repeating itself across the country.

But even still, I’ve seen the power of collective impact and togetherness in our country when things get tough.

Americans have the ability to band together across differences and social constructs when there is a threat to our collective humanity. And, racism and oppression are such threats. Each of us has a responsibility to make our country, cities, and communities better for all of us.

Change really does start with the heart and mind.

It starts with you and me.

No one gets a pass here. Those who have remained silent in the past no longer have the right to be silent now. We are each responsible for acknowledging and condemning all forms of racism, even the forms that inherently benefit some of us.

Own it.

No longer can we sit on the sidelines and outsource our individual responsibility to take a stand to others. We must all stand for justice or we will all be responsible for our collective demise.

Schools and districts should prioritize learning and selfreflection on issues of race and equity.

We should bring our whole selves to the classroom and work with intention to increase our ability to see, build relationships and to educate each student. We can’t improve the racial inequities in our country if we are afraid to learn about and speak up against them. Schools and districts should create space and opportunity for the adults and students in the system to safely learn about issues of race and equity and partner with professional organizations that can facilitate learning that leads to tangible actions and outcomes.

Schools and districts should prioritize the social and emotional learning (SEL) and mental health needs of students and adults.

Most of us may feel ill-equipped to support the SEL and mental health needs of students, let alone our own, but this is a critical area that must be a priority. School

Elite News June 5, 2020 7 districts should partner with psychologists, utilize school counselors, and create time and space within the daily learning experience to address the trauma students bring with them to school. As leaders, we must be aware that addressing issues of social and emotional learning requires educators to help students understand and manage their emotions, establish and maintain positive relationships, build empathy, set goals, and make appropriate decisions. A whole-child approach to public education requires us to consider more than just academic factors when serving students.

Schools and districts should prioritize creating opportunities that connect students to their interests, passions, and to new and diverse experiences.

Schools should be the place where students are inspired to dream, where they fall in love with learning and exploration, and where they are introduced to new experiences. In the absence of this type of learning, students quickly feel disconnected from school, struggle with finding a purpose for learning, and can easily be tempted to engage in disruptive behavior. Schools and districts should repurpose seat time and create opportunities within the school schedule for students to explore non-academic passions that also build relational connections between adults and students.

We need an American public education system designed to serve all children equitably.

The current model of public education in the United States was created to produce inequity.

That system has thrived.

Now is the time for educators to both question and reform aspects of our current educational system that are successful at producing perpetual inequities. Why are we so committed to grade levels, seat time, and age-based education when we know students thrive when learning is personalized based on their readiness, needs, and interests?

Why do we hold kids back when their brains are ready for more rigorous and deeper learning?

Why do we push kids forward when their brains and extenuating factors call for a slower pace with more expert support? Why are we so committed to a curricular model void of multiple perspectives, lacking relevant application, and void of a social curriculum that prepares children for the realities of this world’s humanity? Why are we so committed to a flawed grading system that rewards everything under the sun but true, long-

term learning?

Why are we so committed to a grading system that penalizes students for not achieving mastery of content and skills on our schedule? Why are we so averse to giving students full credit at the moment they truly learn, whenever that may be? Why are we still committed to punitive disciplinary models and policies when we all know that punitive consequences fail at changing long-term behavior?

Why are we still committed to creating barriers that prevent all kids from accessing a rigorous curriculum? And why are we still amazed that our neediest students, schools, and districts keep losing the excellent teacher lottery at scale?

Essential Love

Although there are many examples of divergent teachers and leaders implementing many of these reforms in their classrooms, school buildings, and districts, our collective public education system still needs a revolution, primarily because it has failed people of color for generations with no clear end in sight.

A reimagined education system is our antiracist protest. It’s what we can do, right now, to give tangible action to our often hollow rhetoric. It’s what we did at Brooks College Prep in Chicago and it’s what we’re trying to do in DeSoto ISD. Together, let’s reimagine a school system that promotes socially conscious and responsive education. Let’s create a system that values the needs of each student, and tailors their educational journeys to their uniqueness and interest.

When kids are seen, heard, loved, and have their needs met, we develop the entirety of their lives and prepare them to lead courageously, consciously, and compassionately. If we create the right conditions, our students will bloom into whatever we have implanted inside them. As educators, we have the power, the audience, and daily ability to truly shape the change that we so desperately need in this world.

We have an opportunity to prevent the next George Floyd death, the next Amy Cooper 911 call, the next Ahmaud Arbery jog. Let’s use our positions of power to build bridges, not barriers; to build empathy, not apathy; to build awareness, not ignorance.

Let’s start today.

The essential workers at Charlton Methodist Hospital were shown appreciation and honored for their work on the front lines and even behind-the-scenes at the hospital by a DeSoto ISD Pre-K teacher and artist by trade, Regina Dean. Accompanied by her sister, Levatta Dean Levels, Ms. Dean presented a beautiful painting and a floating tea cup. The sisters rolled up with a red wagon filled full with beautifully decorated gift bags and presented them to the President of the Fellowship of Professional Women, Dr. Cynthia Mickens-Ross.

Dr. Ross, who is also Community Relations Director for Methodist Health System, said she was honored to receive the gifts and would personally give them to the essential workers.

“WHO GOT NEXT UP? THE NBA DOES, THEY ARE FIRST!”

I can remember the fun times when we would play basketball in my backyard on my pro size basketball goal with dunkable springs. Where my friends and neighbors would come over to compete in all the tournaments we would have weekly.

I have always kept some of the best sports equipment when I was growing up because my father would bless me with it. Rewarding me for being accountable and diligent in my cleaning up of the backyard and other chores.

I love having things organize, prepared and accessible to function at the highest level to do a task and I truly believe there are plenty of dedicated men & women who strive for the same results too.

Playing pickup basketball games at outdoor courts brings up one common denominator when all players want to

play. That is: “Who Got Next?”

If you have been one of those players anywhere waiting to play this game, then you know that this is the first and best question.

Now the picture is painted well to explore who is really next up. The COVID-19 and now one of the most infamous parts of our history in the United States is the present killings of our black men in year 2020.

The elephant in the room is that racism is still here in America even with success.

But on a lot of levels, the way you erase it is by the person who started it.

They have to be confronted by one of his own on their same level and held accountable to the upholding of the standard. This is where the NBA is comes in and shows us why they are next up with several reasons. The NBA makes a decision on Thursday, June 4th, 2020 as to resume play with 22 teams or all 30 of them. Once that is made, they will go back to working out the mechanics and procedures of testing every player and staff during this upcoming playoff season.

For because of its bylaws, contract agreements, NBAPA and sports constitution, the NBA became number # 1 as the best ran sports organization

in the world. In retrospect, June 2015, the NBA has also became the best well paid players association because the way the union was formed for them.

How so or perhaps why?

David Stern who was the NBA commissioner for 30 years from 1984 to 2014, trailblazed the sports arena with the NBA’s vison of being the best sport to us

americans .

Meanwhile the NBA presented itself as an exciting game to watch while building the revenue of its broadcasting as well. Mr. Stern created a fun and entertaining atmosphere for the family and sports world.

He was smart and innovative with his marketing and knew eventually that he needed to pass the torch over to a young man who was just as tough and firm in protecting its constitution and players. Mr. David Stern passed away on Wednesday, January 1st, 2020.

So who got next up after Mr. Stern?

His protégé 58 year old Adam Silver, who first started working for the NBA in 1992.

He held several positions such as; Senior Vice President, Chief Operating Officer, NBA Chief Of Staff, President Of NBA Entertainment and Special Assistant To The Commissioner. He is known to have great listening skills in hearing the concerns of the players and coaches which helped to transform the

NBA into the best league globally.

I like Mr. Silver’s tenacious tact of sticking to the NBA diversity laws. A prime example of this was having a wise backbone displayed when he forced former owner Donald Sterling on Tuesday, April 29th, 2014 to sell the Los Angeles Clippers after he made racist remarks.

Mr. Sterling was also fined $2.5 million dollars to be paid shortly after the incident and there was no ifs, ands or buts about it. So in the era of big wealth inequality, the NBA and its Players Association(Union), gave us a true blueprint on how to have money distributed properly and fairly to all of its players and employees.

Please note that Chris Paul, an active player is the president of the NBA Players Association and the vice president is Andre Iguodala. This union also have an executive committee with active and former players leading and carrying out duties on weekly basis.

Their job description is to ensure that the rights of NBA players are protected in all dynamics of the business. In addition, they must help in such a way that each player’s goals and opportunities are capitalize in every aspect on and off the court.

Therefore, based off the decision made this Thursday, the NBA plans to resume basketball play on July 31st,2020 with maybe 22 or 30 teams. They will house in these teams and employees at the beautiful ESPN Resort Of Walt Disney in Orlando, Florida.

So yes, the NBA is going to Disney World in July. Lol! The playoff games will probably be played without any fans in the stands but yes for TV. For Your Information, the NBA has backed the George Floyd Family and the peaceful but stern protests for the history of police brutalities here in America.

I am glad that the NBA got next up and lets continue to watch how they confront racism head on and how they will not back down from the representation of “Doing The Right Thing Because It Is Right.�

And most of all - VOTE. We need your help!

Vote to elect officials who will hold accountable those who violate the public good; no matter what badge they wear or office they hold. All Americans deserve the right to breathe.

The nation and our community are reeling in the aftermath of the killing of yet another unarmed black man. The video that showed a white policeman kneeling on George Floyd’s neck until his death is beyond shocking.

These images continue to reverberate across the nation, sparking protests and unrest.

This clear display of racial hatred has enraged people young and old, black, brown and white. It has led to protests everywhere, including here in Dallas, even amid a global pandemic.

Conscience requires that those in power speak out against racism and prejudice and act to redress them. Our students and families are among those who have taken to the streets of Dallas to protest these ills. We join with them in declaring that the status quo of indiscriminate and violent over policing of minority communities is an affront to human rights that can no longer be accepted.

Dallas has experienced its share of injustice and inequity that has damaged relationships between white, black and brown communities and institutions designed to serve them, including the police and even schools.

The scope of this disconnection is a clarion call to our district leadership and the 22,000 teachers and staff to devote ourselves and all available resources to rebuilding this broken trust. In a few short days, Dallas ISD’s Racial Equity Office will launch a series of community conversations
