Elasticity is a phenomenon of absorbing flows in spaces that have the ability to transform and return to their original form. Aarhus can be considered an elastic city thanks to the flows of people and activities that fill and void the different parts of the city throughout the day.

It is important to note that there are pockets that are more elastic than others, because they have particular environments that are conducive to «high elasticity». There are two types of environments: the so-called «void» environments, spaces surrounded by various specialized pockets, and the so-called «strip» environments, spaces of passage according to a given axis.

These places can have different sizes, different scales and different flows. They are composed of flexible spaces, which have the ability to change and return to their initial form. They must have four common characteristics: Diversity, Collectivity, Reversibility and Promenade, in order to create a varied elasticity.

Diversity

Reversibility

This translates into a programmatic multiplicity within a limited radius. However, the urban sprawl of the city through the creation of specialized pockets does not allow this diversity within them. The challenge would be to add elements that would guide future urban densification.

Reversibility is the capacity of an architectural object to adapt to different forms of activities. This is an important characteristic given the cold climate present for half of the year, forcing some activities and events to be confined to closed and heated spaces.

It allows the population to gather around a flexible space.

Faced with a growing population, and the challenges of urban densification to accommodate its future inhabitants, existing flexible spaces that require better facilities should be improved and added to.

It is translated into a set of networks that connect the elastic places and facilitate the flow of individuals. This network is marked by the crossing of diverse landscapes.

If the creation of new flexible spaces would ensure an adequate management of the future collective and cultural needs of its inhabitants, it is necessary to ensure a pleasant visual walk.

These four characteristics are the vectors of an Aarhusian elasticity.

Project intention Elasticity is therefore an action that is a logical continuation of the development of the Danish city, as it is the city’s planning policy to break down spatial segregation. It will forge the new identity of the «capital» of Jutland by its response to the imminent densification of the city: to affirm its elastic character. To achieve this, it is necessary to act in two stages: In the first step: the elastic spaces present in the «Strip» and «Void» environments must be reinforced with complementary facilities.

In a second step, the environments without flexible spaces will gain some, thanks to the implementation of new architectural and landscape installations. These interventions will have to be adapted to the invested environments. The result will be a variety of projects, ranging from small landscaped amenity spaces to large flexible infrastructures.

Elasticity will thus be the spearhead of the urban development of the city of Aarhus. It will be a city characterized by its elasticity, constantly changing its face during the day and night, as the seasons change.

Absorption is the capacity of a place to capture the flow of people at a given time.

The city of Aarhus has places that are more absorbent than others depending on the time. These are correlated with the type of pockets.

Godsbanen is located in a space surrounded by various specialized pockets, so it is located in a void environment. It is a cultural space, whose interior layout allows for adaptation to different forms of activity, and the reception of a large number of individuals. This work of spaces makes it an elastic place.

This space is located along a busy crossing, creating a new sequence. Its interior layout and environment allow it to respond to the different activities and the flow of people using the crossing. This makes it an elastic place.
